March 28, 2023 - Crows Electromusic, a new synth company from Vancouver, Canada, is thrilled to introduce OVUM, a standalone all-analog tool for exploratory sound synthesis. With individual controls for each function, OVUM gives direct control of five independent triangle-core oscillators. The instrument’s unique un-quantized interface is perfect for exploring pure tones, drones, and microtonal sound textures.
    Features:
    • 100% analog circuitry
    • Five voices
    • Triangle and square wave triangle-core oscillators
    • One-control-per-function interface
    • Unique control system
    • Fully standalone, just add headphones
    • Wood and aluminium enclosure
    • USB powered
    • Made in Canada
During development of OVUM we’ve had the pleasure of handing the instrument to people who’ve never touched a synth in their life - and then watch their eyes light up as they discover how easy it is to make strange and beautiful sounds when they’re unconstrained by conventional time signatures and musical scales. We think people of all ages, musical abilities, and experience levels are going to love this instrument.
OVUM is available now for $129 USD.
Crows Electromusic is a new synth company based in Vancouver, Canada. Started by Cory Alder in 2022. Crows’ goal is to develop new hardware instruments that challenge the established ways we interact with sound and music creation. Our first product, OVUM, is available for purchase now, and orders will ship starting April 15th.

I like what I see and hear. But I feel like the sonic possibilities aren't so extended? Add maybe one LFO, and/or even a couple patch points, and it would be awesome (I think).
Would love to hear more examples - or even see the inside, how much it can be modified.

Love this! I remember seeing similar functionality on the TE TX-1 when it was released, and was quite tempted by it (until I saw the price).
Nice to see something a bit more focussed and affordable that does the same job.
Would be cool if it could act as an audio interface so you can record audio directly over usb, but I doubt it

I'm not sure I can imagine it being manufactured, marketed, sold and distributed for much less, at least by the scale of company behind it. Whether it offers value enough is a personal question, of course. That said, if you know of a similar device for less money, I'd be glad to know of it.
For me, I'm not sure I care about the analogue aspect enough to justify it, but I'd like to hear it back to back with something cooked up in software.

@@willmcconnellsimpson1411 Agreed, $130 doesn't seem bad at all considering analogue and handmade. People pay about that for straight midi drum pads that are manufactured.

It's a simple drone synth, its not for everyone but you can get awesome sounds from analog drone synths. I own the king drone, and I've used it to record ambient soundtracks for a video game. I made a demo of the King Drone here: ua-cam.com/video/WaAAfluRFmo/v-deo.html

    • @HydetheRapper
      @HydetheRapper Рік тому +2

Thinking in my own workflow, you could definitely sample that and use it to build out a melody or a chord progression. You could also just build a chord progression with it and record each chord separately (automate and process as necessary). Could also have some cool soundscape-y stuff-like a long drone slowly fading in as an intro. Could create some really interesting feels.
In contexts like movie and TV production, I could also see something like that creating audio textures for situations-add a low rumble for subtle drama/suspense or a harsh discordant sound to create a sense of unease.
Just some possible use cases. I’m also not rushing out to buy it, but it could have some pretty interesting applications if you were creative enough.
