Crescendo??? Crescendo, in musical terms, means getting louder, which she did several times, along with decrescendo, or getting softer. What I think you are referring to is the two-octave scale at the end. What makes that difficult is that female singers pass through two "passagios"--or "breaks"--during those two octaves. Being able to do that seamlessly meant that her voice was extremely agile...because we didn't perceive any "breaks". In layman's terms...she sang a LOT, transitioning through octaves....but...if you notice, she paused during each potential "break" and allowed her larynx to make that transition during the pause.
Very true but I forget whether it was during this or around this time where she had damaged her voice I don't remember specifically but it was something like that. Although she did extremely well and is very much the professional.
I am so glad that Julie Andrews was able to give us "Victor/Victoria" before her singing voice failed completely. I saw Victor/Victoria for the first time on the MGM lot too in the main theater at an employee screening. I had worked on the lot for about a year. Here is another story to go with this. I worked in the Thalberg building and in the basement were screening rooms. I happen to be down there when Lesley Ann Warren, and some other people came out of the screening room. They just watched Victor/ Victoria. Leslie was less than happy with her performance, and expressing that to the people she was with. Many years later, when I saw her again, I reminded her of what she said, and wondered if she really believed at the time, she wasn’t very good.
@gvie7783 I've been in those basement screening rooms a lot too! That's an amazing story about Lesley Anne Warren. Many think it's her best performance ever. She may have had a shot at winning that Oscar if it weren't for Jessica Lange. But Lange was in a lead role for "Tootsie" and they always win when put in with actresses who were truly in supporting roles. Love Lange/Love Tootsie. With "E.T." it was great year for movies.
When my friends and I saw this in a theater the audience spontaneously stood up and cheered! It was the first time I had ever seen such a thing, and never again! One of her best performances, if not the?
I like that tiny change in body language and demeanor after removing her headpiece. All "female charm" disappeared and she stood there with her chin out and a very blasé pose, instantly looking more masculine. A masterpiece of acting, both within the movie plot and the movie as a whole 📽✨👌

My favourite scene from the whole movie-that 4 octave voice!
I like that tiny change in body language and demeanor after removing her headpiece. All "female charm" disappeared and she stood there with her chin out and a very blasé pose, instantly looking more masculine. A masterpiece of acting, both within the movie plot and the movie as a whole 📽✨👌
This is one of my favorite scenes in any movie. Julie Andrews is AMAZING!
A woman pretending to be a man, pretending to be a woman? YES
@@ballad2212 king behavior
@@ballad2212 what did they say 😭 I can’t see it
We love a genderfluid principality :D
A gorgeous woman at that.
It's actually based on a German film of, I think, the 1930s.
Love this show!!!! Robert Preston is hilarious 😂
Lesley Ann Warren is PRICELESS!!!
She was MAGNIFICENT !
My favorite Julie Andrews movie! Thank you Julie for your amazing talent.
AMAZING!! Also at the end when Norma gets so excited by the reveal…. I always die laughing
This film was a great collaboration of many international actors and actresses!!!
JA is the tops, the best. And a beautiful lovely lady as well. Thank you Julie for everything you've done in the entertainment world always a joy to watch.
Julie Andrews is a world treasure.
" remember make it broader with tons of shoulder, remember your a drag queen "
It's set in the 20's, she's not a drag queen she's a female impersonator - who also happens to be female.
@@goawayleavemealone2880 A drag queen *is* a female impersonator, and the term "drag" used to describe a man wearing women's clothing dates back to the 1870's. The first known use of the term (in the form "queen of drag") dates from drag balls hosted in the 1880's in Washington, D.C.
It's not like RuPaul invented drag queens a decade or two ago.
@@kevinmorgan9417 - I'm fully aware that drag is centuries old, however Drag Queens are attempting to be a caricature of women while female impersonator is attempting to appear to be a woman.
@@goawayleavemealone2880 - You are completely wrong. Drag performers do NOT attempt to pretend to be women - they attempt to be great performers period. It is its own thing. Have you ever been to a drag show? (Watching "The Birdcage" doesn't count.)
@@MossyMozart - I'm gay and hung out with some of the local drag Queens, in my younger years. Hi Glitzy and Porsche if you're reading this.
And if we're going to be pretentious, I preferred "Le Cage Aux Folles".
Stop trying to make drag something it's not, it can be an elevated art form. But it rarely actually is.
Absolutely wonderful and Julie Andrew's looks beautiful
Julie Andrews has such a beautiful voice--I've been a fan of hers since "The Sound of Music", and this is such a wonderful tune!😊⛪
I know I'm years late to the discussion, but I am glad you included the part after the song. I think this one scene alone shows why Lesley Ann Warren was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Just finished watching the movie about an hour ago. Wow.. I love it, it's amazing, beautiful, true, Julie's voice is a delight and the last scene brought tears to my eyes..
I'd forgotten how much I liked this movie.
One of the BEST movies EVER!!!
I loved the movie, and saw it on Broadway. The whole movie case were phenomenal. Leslie Ann Warren was great, and Robert Preston perfect, and of course Julie and James, reunited again in film.
I am pretty sure this performance still has the power to stir every gay boy's soul to its very core when they see it for the first or the 100th time 😄
I'm gay and love this song, but nothing about the song or even the movie stirs my soul. Please stop assisting in perpetuating the idea that all young gay men/boys are a bunch of misunderstood theatre kids and gender confused misfits.
@@goawayleavemealone2880 Then why did you bother looking it up and pressing the play button if you didn't give a rip in the first place? Just to troll?
@@cherylbohlender7341 - Because I very much enjoy the song, but please let's not act like this song speaks to something in the soul of every gay man on a profound level. Aren't we as a species supposed to find that sort of stereotyping objectionable.
Julie Andrews is truly amazing.
Julie Andrews is one of the most Iconic Hollywood Goddesses ever, the only person able to make l someone love, who legit "hates" musical movies. JULIE GORGEOUS! 💚✨💎🎶🎶
What I love about older films is that the musical numbers looked easy, but of course they were not! Recent films, try to make it complex and difficult, but they're easy, and there's just no comparison!
Julie. but also the dancers, Leslie Ann Warren, James Garner made this moment a great one
I love this movie. I love every movie of Julie’s.
My favorite one si “the sound of music”
The most icredicible voice. PERFECTION.. She is so beautiful, charming and fun!!! This movie always makes me happy!!!
Makes me cry thinking Ms. Andrews underwent a vocal tragedy shortly after... altering her voice ever after 😪 Never fear Ms. Andrews. You will always be our Maria/Victoria/Poppins ♥♥♥
We call this, “talent!” 🎉
I remember seeing this movie when it first came out. Everyone in it was simply phenomenal and Julie Andrews voice and range was amazing!
I first saw this movie on cable in the 90s when I was a young girl. I instantly fell in love with the story, actors/characters and of course the songs. Ms. Andrews is absolutely STUNNING!!!
Same here. I absolutely love this film, along with Cabaret. Julie Andrews and Jazz are match made in heaven.
Buen cuadro musical de una gran película.Victor Victoria.
Equally thrilling for me are the dancers all so beautiful ❤️ and OMG what a routine, stunning.
I remember seeing this film at the cinema when it first came out
and the audience actually appaluded at the end of this song
Ok. Gotta watch that movie again. Isn't she just amazing? I saw her on tv recently and she's still lovely and gracious.
Such a talent the world may never see again.
One of my favorite singers
Thanks for preserving this classic love it 💚⚡✅⚡💚
Every aspect of this clip is awesome!! It makes me smile. Talent is EVERYWHERE !
One of the greatest movies of all time with one of the greatest actresses of all time !!! We love you Julie !!!!
Always a pleasure to watch and hear Julie Andrews. A wonderful actress and a marvelous singer. Thank you, Dame Julie.
I wish I was in the audience at that nightclub. If Julie Andrews and that company of dancers were that exciting on film, I can only imagine the added excitement in person.
Bravo Julie Andrews! Nobody does it better!! 🙏🙏👍😃
Simply adore this musical number! 🎶💃🏾
Nothing could be better than this cast and Julie Andrews was sublime, but it was based on a German film with the same plot made in 1933 at the height of their decadent era - think of Cabaret.
Saw this at the movies in 82’ and absolutely loved it! Fantastic
[VICTORIA]
'Bout twenty years ago way down in New Orleans
A group of fellers found a new kind of music
And they decided to call it...jazz
No other sound has what this music has
Before they knew it, it was whizzin' 'round the world
The world was ready for a blue kind of music
And now they play it from Steamboat Springs to La Paz
Oh, baby, won't you play me
"Le Jazz Hot" maybe
And don't ever let it end
I tell you, friends, it's really something to hear
I can't sit still when there's that rhythm near me
Also, baby, "Le Jazz Hot" may be
What's holdin' my soul together
Don't know whether it's morning or night
Only know it's sounding right
So come on in and play me
"Le Jazz Hot", baby
'Cos I love my Jazz...
Hot!

"Le Jazz Hot!"
Always appreciated when someone goes through the trouble. Although may I? In the second to last line It's not "Love... Jazz Hot!" it's the title... "Le... Jazz. Hot! Le Jazz Hot!"
"Jaz" was a word coined in the
brothels in New Orleans by
musicians who were hire to play in them.
In those days, it was a
Euphemism for Sex: "She's busy with jazz right now."
And possibly where "Jiss" is derived from.
