- The dancers of the Fandango Ballroom perform a sultry routine for their new customers.
What is Sweet Charity (1969) about?
Shirley MacLaine gives one of her greatest performances in this spectacular musical based on Neil Simon’s smash Broadway hit. Director Bob Fosse broke new cinematic ground with this freewheeling, visually stunning story of a lovelorn New York dance hall hostess, Charity Hope Valentine, who dreams of old-fashioned romance but gives her heart to one undeserving man after another.

RIP CHITA. You drumming your fingers on your hip behind your back has lived in my head rent free for several decades.
💖👏💗💃
It still lives rent free in my head. And so does Chita.
Some staring like they are dead inside, others staring like they might want to kill him. Juxtaposed with the lyrics. Wow.
The way this performance is able to indirectly convey the powerlessness and exploitation these women suffer through choreography alone is amazing
It doesn't show a single thing what you said but ok.
LOL. Did you learn that in Women’s Studies class?
@@GeorgeEugeneBarrett WHY on earth would we have special classes for half the world's population when we have you to educate us?
@@rastignac30 male moment
I don't see desperation. I see them as turning up for a job they hate and getting it over with in a mechanical and businesslike manner. But (to me, anyway) they seem in charge, somehow.
But I agree the choreography is amazing! I'm pretty sure the choreographer is Bob Fosse. I love the details with the hands!
the working in retail vibes of it all
😅😂 yess
OMG yes!!!
HA! Yes.
Whoa! How did I not know about this until today? This is amazing - it's like a hit to the face. The bored mannequin zombie feel to the dangers' moves- the blank look in their eyes - the way everyone moves together with pretended sensuality but more like machinery rather than people - and the way they all sing the song so so perfectly - the whole thing is mesmerising!
Right! I’ve been watching this over and over, amazed that i’ve never come across this before. It’s truly brilliant!
Please try to watch this movie, Cabaret, and All That Jazz sometime this year if you liked this. You will thank yourself, especially Cabaret. It's one of the best movies ever
This has just trended on my feed too… I knew the Shirley Bassey song but didn’t know it was a song from a film, I thought it was hers. It sounds a lot different to this, though obviously the same song
“Do we shock you?”
@@rixsist7048 I just looked it up from “Hey Big Lobster” from Futurama lol
Fosse is really brilliant here. Bored and tired yet still crisp choreography
You can always pick out his moves.. very iconic.
Ah always
Along with Gwen Verdon❤
A superb rendition of this song. By cutting the choreography to a minimum the women are showing how bored but desperate they are to make a little money. You can actually smell the smoke, sadness and despair.
The only black woman was Paula Kelly. She played a lot of bit roles in black films from the 70s. She is a very recognizable face from black cinema in the late 60s and 70s.
I love seeing dancers of different ages. I don't think I've ever seen pro dancers beyond 30 years old on TV
RIP the incomparable Chita Rivera-a Fosse muse, a legend, a star, a triple-threat, an inspiration and a groundbreaker. Never before, never hence.
Wow. What a beautiful and amazingly said comment!
Had no idea, she died on my birthday this year 😢
@@lindseysloan8735 You get what I’m saying! When I love something or someone, the words come easy.
I love how they're all standing like their feet hurt after a night of dancing with paying customers.
Infelizmente não assisti isso ao vivo, por outro lado ainda pude ver aqui.
and the bowed legs!!!!
That's Fossee. Those are his signature moves/style.
Paula Kelly is mesmerizing. And that perfect body roll??!! That’s my girl!
Yep.
For as famous a scene as this is, it’s still so underrated! Absolute genius - everything about it!
It still blows my mind the way Fosse did choreography and how every dancer moves their bodies in ways you can't imagine outside of animation.
Tecno
Animation huh no
The shapes are insane. And really tell the story.
You can see the misery and boredom. Genius.
The Asian dancer is Adele Yoshioka. She played "Sunny" in Magnum Force (1973)
/End trivia
they served, ate, left no crumbs, brought the roof down, walked away without looking back
Paula Kelly's dancing in this film has the power of a locomotive. She's so great. Pairing her with Chita Rivera is insanely brilliant.
She has the most statuesque build of the bunch. She got my attention. Gorgeous body and a pretty face, can sing and dance.
Amen. When she does that back bend & pops up, WHAT? She was everything… ❤️
I absolutely loved her in Uptown Saturday Night as Leggy Peggy!!
May she rest
RIP
That backroll was everything!
One of the most cinematic and influential choreographers ever, Mr. Bob Fosse. He didn't let a single frame go to waste, what an artist, and what a performance from the ladies of the Fandango Ballroom.
I love me some Chita BUT you simply can't take your eyes off Paula Kelly. This whole number your attention immediately goes directly to her. She was absolutely mesmerizing. What an amazing talent. She will be missed. RIP!💔😪
Without a doubt she commands the scene!
@@restlessbohemian26 AMEN!❤️
She's just mesmerizing!
The greatest of all Fosse dance numbers with the greatest dancers. This is the heaviest of heavy hitters. The Paula Kelly body roll is worth the price of admission.
i love the contrast between this and 'there's got to be something better than this' where this is mechanical and bored (but incredible) whereas in the other number their movements are free and full and enthusiastic at even the idea of freedom, i just find it so interesting and such good storytelling even through dance moves
This conveys so much without saying anything. Having to perform for a guy but not enjoying it at all.
Chita Riveria (RIP) and Paula Kelly just kill this number. The overall choreography is fire!
Jesus Chita Rivera is so fantastic in this role. She was probably the quintessential Velma Kelly in "Chicago" too. Such an American treasure.
Bob Fosse was an absolute genius. His work and creativity is impeccable and unparalleled. You can still see his influence in both musical theater and even popular music and music videos to this day. Even if people don't know where the influence comes from, those of us familiar with his work will always recognize it.
They need to make more movies like this ..just the vibe waow the colors and the visuals
Never get tired of watching this... The Women! Fosse! When the art of Theatrical dance triumphed!
4/2024 Just now seeing this. I love how they are all leaning against the bar in different ways. This was lovely. RIP Chita Rivera and Paula Kelly and anyone else.
Reign in Power Miss Chita Rivera & Miss Paula Kelly. Amazing work in this life and I know you’re both killing it in the next. 🥰❤️💔
my god, they all killed it- and the two lead dancers were perfect and gave me a different vibe each
You can't beat 60s style and music. This is amazing!
Fell in love with Paula Kelly, Bob Fosse and Shirley McLaine all at once with this movie.
Everything about this is perfection….so much said and set up without actually saying it through the movements and costumes and holy crap Paula Kelly is captivating!
Who is the Black woman? That gold on her skin is CRAZY 😍
She is Paula Kelly (1942-2020); Studied dance at Julliard; stared in film, tv. Magnetic.
Yes, she was gorgeous.
That's Leggy Peggy from Uptown Saturday Night. Run, don't walk! Watch!
Bob fosses choreography is amazing
I’ve known this song for most of my life but have never seen this routine until today!! How is this possible. What an extraordinary piece of choreography. I just have to watch this film.
Same! I have know idea how this flew under my radar.
I only knew of it because of Grounded for Life, I feel ashamed lol. The director behind this, Bob Fosse, also did All That Jazz and he's iconic.
I’m 50 (but think I’m 25). Lol!
I remember when I was about seven or eight years old, and my Nana had one of those huge record player/radio things and she taught me every song to every musical up until about that point. The hills are alive with the sound of nothing but a big spender…
They can NEVER NEVER NEVER recreate this. Once in a lifetime ❤
I will never get tired of Fosse... ever.
Great, great, great... No words. I've loved this scene since I was a kid. 10 over 10.
They not doing it like this anymore 😭. 10s across the board
This musical number was perfection but I couldn't take my eyes off the mesmerizing Paula Kelly!❤😍
Rest in Peace Ms. Rivera. Thank you for all your work 🤍
PAULA KELLY and CHITA RIVERA simply steal the show. That’s Star quality ❤❤❤
Genius, this never gets old!
This is brilliantly played and Fosse was brilliant. The women are like snakes - menacing and dangerous.
This is the moment that Made Fossee a god in the dance world. I could watch this repeatedly and still find new things I missed. All dancers could take notes from this. It's a moment of perfection.
2:18 what did that gesture meant? 😂 The girl at the right
Gosh, they all are brilliant❤
Paula Kelly - awesome and underrated. Rest in peace. Chita Rivera -always fantastic.
The one-eyed blink at 03:16 is quite impressive and pretty cool looking, funny even.
I finally figured out what the “Japanese” one was saying. I could only hear the moshi moshi desu ka baby. It’s “moshi moshi ikaga desu ka, baby”
How is this so... weirdly.... hypnotizing?
I have always wanted to hear this song and see the choreography here. Just brilliant. Can't go wrong with Fosse
I saw Sweet Charity tour with Molly Ringwald!!!!! She was so cute, it was so so good!!! I just had to see her as an 80’s baby 🤩🥰🤩
Never watched this movie but will be watching it after this epic performance 👏🏾
Paula Kelly just stands out shes so cool
This is my favorite part of the movie, I use to sing this to my boys when they were little for laughs 😂❤.
Paula ate this up!!!!!!
Especially the body roll to the pose 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 04:00
She really did. 1:52 I’m like go ahead and dance girl!!!
@@millers3888 I can watch that part a million times (& I have! 😋) So fierce… ❤
The body roll snatches me EVERY TIME.
@@lolallday08 EVERY TIME!!!!!🙌🏾🙌🏾
I love Bob Fosse. I've always loved musicals, performed in many myself, but this scene has always been one of my favorites.
Astoundingly good performanes, choreography and direction. Fosse's growth as a director from one film to the nest is a revelation.
These women are fierce! Their movements are precise and their bodies amazing - like skilled dancers used to look. Wow - just wow!
what do you mean by "used to look"?
One of the most genre defining, and iconic scenes in the history of musical cinema! 🙌🏼
I've heard this song so many times before. Why am I just now discovering this video?! Omg this is gold.
This is maybe the third best scene in the movie. Seriously if you like this you will love the movie.
This is a stunning piece of theater gold, I absolutely adore musicals
Fosse claimed he got the idea for this seeing the salesgirls at the makeup counter at Bloomingdales. They tried to be charming while their feet were killing them
Es una obra de arte!
These ladies have some charm in their hubba bubba, hey big spender, do you want to have fun, or laughs-how's about a good time. Hey, big spender spend a little time with me.
Ahhh Bob Fosse, you can spot him a mile off~ 💖
Nothing comes close to this today. Spectacular.
FUN! LAUGHS! GOOD TIMES! 😍
Always find myself staring at Ms Kelly in this. What a star
anyone who dances in a Bob Fosse show must be *really good* at freeze dance
The best moment from the movie tbh
Fosse is a genius. Period.
I won a part in this musical when I was living in west palm beach. They were going to put it on at a theater in Fort Lauderdale. God is good 🙏
congrats!
He said, I just need to see one more lady before I make my decision😂😂😂😂
Still brilliant after all this time ❤
The first shot with all of the legs splayed randomly yet creating a perfect setting, and PAULA !!!!!
The killed this number. Bravo ladies. ❤❤❤❤
Classic Fosse 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hahahahha I remember my highschool days when my teacher entered me to our school pageant for grades purpose and I end up doing my talent as this song. It was shocking for I was the only bold enough to do a semi exotic talent while the other contestant was so wholesome with doing poems, sing, story telling on stage 😂 I blamed my cousin who put me into it good thing I got the 1st place though 😂 What a weird experience 🤭
Never fails to grab me. I'll watch this lots of times over. Chita Rivera, Paula Kelly and that lovely lady that can sing, dance AND smoke all at the same time. Folks, if you haven't seen this yet, you've got a bit treat comin'!
.46 the blonde and how she does her blush ..amazing
I love the baby doll blink at 3:16
The costumes are so beautiful!!
Oh wow. We did this in high school drama class 😂.
Amazing 55 years ago and still so good
Chita Rivera! Bob Fosse!! And whoever composed the incredible music - gotta look this up.
One of the best performances ever from Sweet Charity and Company Paula Kelly and Chita Rivera. One word awesome and always will be brilliant ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’ve never seen this, of course I know the song. Amazing, they just don’t make films like this anymore and it’s such a shame
When I was 7 yrs old my sisters and I used to listen to this soundtrack nonstop and sing this song at the top of our lungs. 😅
We did a dance class with Arlene Phillips in the 70’s,when we were all about 8 or 9 years old,and she choreographed this number for us all😅,the parents watching at the end😮
This musical has so many great songs
This totally blew me away! It just fell into my feed and oh my what a treat. Fantastic!!!!
Still one of my favorite numbers
Total Bob Fosse ❤
Este número es sencillamente genial, en fondo y forma. Lo siento, pero ya no se hacen musicales así.
LOVE the contrast of the BIG SPENDER lyric to the glass of BEER in the foreground shot, very much. 1:22
Sweet Charity 😊
Have been trying for ages to recall the name of the movie with Shirley MacLaine in which this Hey Big Spender dance sequence featured. Thank you! Now to find Sweet Charity to rewatch.
fosse signature all over
