    Whoa! How did I not know about this until today? This is amazing - it's like a hit to the face. The bored mannequin zombie feel to the dangers' moves- the blank look in their eyes - the way everyone moves together with pretended sensuality but more like machinery rather than people - and the way they all sing the song so so perfectly - the whole thing is mesmerising!

      It cuts like a knife, that line. It partakes of the notion (and I'm pretty sure we're still living with it) that what goes on in a woman's mind is the last thing this pal wants to know. And these women know it, too. It's an ironic line that is so sharp you don't notice at first that they've drawn blood.

      I don't see desperation. I see them as turning up for a job they hate and getting it over with in a mechanical and businesslike manner. But (to me, anyway) they seem in charge, somehow.
      But I agree the choreography is amazing! I'm pretty sure the choreographer is Bob Fosse. I love the details with the hands!

    • @omg9261
      @omg9261 8 місяців тому +19

      Gosh, it's such a weird optics. I'm a woman, but I have no idea how exactly this is exploitation?
      One a day a woman woke up and decided "I don't wanna work at a normal job because it seems too difficult for me and I'm better than that. I wanna have a lot of quick money without having any qualification or education or talent. So the best way to do it is to sell my own body since I don't have any talents or skills to sell. I don't care about my own feelings anyways. Fast and easy money are much more important than my feelings about this job". And of course they believe that they will settle down with a rich husband/client.
      I mean ok, none of them conceptualize and formulate it as I did, since they don't reflect and conceptualize much before entering the profession. But if they would and if they did it honestly - their logic would be exactly as I described. They exploit their own bodies voluntarily and intentionally. *They* exploit their own bodies. It's them who do it in the first place.
      Although sure, this profession is not as easy as they expect it to be and also rich clients are not in a hurry to marry them. So what? Why don't you understand, that adult people should be accountable for their choices? Why do you try to make victims out of them instead of admitting their agency? (sorry for my english, I'm not a native). It's actually a very degrading and paternalistic attitude towards them. They are adult, grown up people, capable and accountable.
      What a person has and experiences is the direct result of their own choices. And when people are truly unhappy - they struggle to change the curcumstances. When people don't struggle to create a different life - it obviously and surely means they are relatively satisfyed. Don't belive victimhood BS narratives when people whine about their lives, but put zero effort into changing something. That's just BS, trying to manipulate the listener into feeling sympathy. That's what "victims" do: they create victimhood narratives in order to get something from the naive listener. When people really want something the put effort into achieving it. And if they don't - it means the convinience and secondary gains, they already have, are bigger than the potential reward.

    Fosse's choreography is what every stage-director should study in order to be creatively armed in his staging. True, we did it since the early 60th, as I remember.

    I love Bob Fosse. I've always loved musicals, performed in many myself, but this scene has always been one of my favorites.

    Astoundingly good performanes, choreography and direction. Fosse's growth as a director from one film to the nest is a revelation.

    Eartha Kitt is legendary. It was fun seeing Asha-na-na. One of them had family in Providence and got stranded here during the ‘78 blizzard. My boyfriend and I ended up in the restaurant where they were and got an impromptu show through the floorboards. Hadn’t thought about that in decades. Thanks for the memory.

    My theatre class used to have occasional Fosse Fridays when we’d just goof around incorporating dance moves into our totally unrelated scenes. We also had Scottish Thursday, self-explanatory, and one day our most prestigious director, who also directed at the Alley, Houston’s main theater, had a spitting lesson. The Dean brought a board member to visit right in the middle. Oops.
    She also didn’t understand why I refused to smoke for a scene when I was 14.😂 I adored her. She used to take me and her other favorite (my best friend) to work with her at the Alley like little protégés and we got to experience so much and even go to afterparties as just high school students. Truly an honor.
    Being a Theatre Kid was awesome.
