- Finale of Robert Wise's 1968 extravaganza STAR!
Julie Andrews portrays Gertrude Lawrence (July 4, 1898 -- September 6, 1952) an English actress, singer and musical comedy performer known for her stage appearances in the West End theatre district of London and on Broadway.
"Saga of Jenny", music and lyrics by Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin, is from "Lady in the Dark" Gertrude played the role of Liza Elliott, a magazine editor undergoing psychoanalysis to better understand why both her professional and personal lives are filled with indecision.
NEVER MAKE UP YOUR MIND! - Фільми й анімація
*Lyrics:*
There once was a girl named Jenny
Whose virtues were varied and many
Excepting that she was inclined
Always to make up her mind
And Jenny points a moral
With which you cannot quarrel
As you will find
Jenny, Jenny
Who's Jenny?
Never heard of Jenny
Jenny made her mind up when she was 3
She herself was going to trim the Christmas tree
Christmas Eve she lit the candles
Tossed the tapers away
Little Jenny was an orphan on Christmas day
Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
Her equal would be hard to find
She lost one dad and mother
A sister and a brother
But she would make up her mind
Jenny made her mind up
When she was 12
That into foreign languages she would delve
But at 17 to Vassar
It was quite a blow
That in 27 languages she couldn't say no.
Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
Her equal would be hard to find
To Jenny I'm beholden
Her heart was big and golden
But she would make up her mind
Jenny made her mind up at 22
To get herself a husband was the right thing to do
So she got herself all dolled up
In her satins and furs
And she got herself a husband
But he wasn't hers!
Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
Her equal would be hard to find
Deserved a bed of roses
But history discloses
That she would make up her mind
Jenny made her mind up at 51
That she would write her memoirs before she was done
The very day her book was published, history relates
That were wives who shot their husbands
In some 33 States.
Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
Her equal would be hard to find
She could give cards in spadies
To many other ladies
But she would make up her mind
Jenny made her mind up at 75
That she would live to be the oldest woman alive
But gin and rum and destiny
They play funny tricks
And poor Jenny kicked the bucket
At 76...
Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
Her equal would be hard to find
Poor Jenny,
Bright as a penny
Her equal would be hard to find
Jenny, Jenny, Jenny, Jenny
Jenny points a moral with which you cannot quarrel
Makes a lot of common sense
Jenny and her saga
Prove that you're gaga
If you don't keep sitting on the fence
You know that Jenny and her story
Point the way to glory
For all man and womankind
Anyone with vision
Comes to this decision
You mustn't make up
Shouldn't make up
Never, ever, never make up
Your mind
Thanks for that Rob!
Thank you!🙂
Julie sings it SO clearly u dont need any lyrics hahaha
I very much appreciate the lyrics.
A lot of people are saying it’s too much, I thought it was perfect , the song was supposed to be dreamlike and I think the did an awesome job, especially in the beginning
A criminally underrated musical with conceivably the best performance ever from Julie Andrews.
Every now and then I come to this clip just to marvel at Andrews' talent. The voice... the energy... the dancing... that last note. She was amazing.
I can hear the vibrating in Julie's voice that she didn't do voiceovers afterwards, that she sung while she was dancing. Woman never lost it, talent and dedication that is. ❤
Rachel DeRosier they added those vibrations during the recording to make it seem more realistic
@@emilywilson778 I wondered if they may have done that, its quite well done
@@emilywilson778 did they?
The song was prerecorded with the tremors in her voice ‘acted’ in to appear she was being tossed about on stage. This number was definitely not sung live. It took weeks of rehearsal and 90% of all the stunts were done by Julie because of the close-ups involved. There was no CGI in 1967 when this picture was filmed, so all special effects were practical.
@@ethannielson942 it's just as well they thought of those things to make it seem authentic! I didn't know all the details behind it, but I knew obviously that there was no CGI.
I'm just sorry for 24 people who can't appreciate this gem...
Oh Gosh! Julie is a GODDESS... I LOVE HER 👏😍
SilvVanessaC she certainly is
Such a beautiful dancer too. Nobody will ever be so special ❤️
Julie looks gorgeous in this!
I've always thought this was a dynamite number. One of her best and the definitive version of this song. It will never be arranged, conducted or sung better by anyone.
What a woman!!! Bravo!
The best Hollywood she performer EVER still alive ! Merci beaucoup from Paris France.
It just occurred to me that Julie was the same age as Ginger Rogers when she performed the Saga of Jenny. They were both 32 years old:) It's interesting to compare their renditions. They're both very unique and quite different.
Amazing !! She did all the stunts herself and while singing !!
well, lots and lots of edits ... and at least one stunt double in a wig that I spotted (and I wasn't even looking for HIM)
@@BernardProfitendieu There are videos and photos of Julie rehearsing and doing many of these stunts herself. And considering that 32 years is a little late to start in stunts. It's quite meritorious.
@@BernardProfitendieu I agree this must have lots of takes and some stunt (that extreme long shot dashing to the stage perhaps?)...including skillful Julie who has definitely looks of a real Ms.Lawrence .
This movie deserves the recognition and success that eluded it at the time. And the great Julie Andrews offers a magnificient performance of Gertrude Lawrence, one of the finest performances in a long and brilliant carreer like hers.
Julie's performances on her movies & Broadway shows she made classic are all mind blowing! Her movie STAR portraying Gertrude Lawrence is above & beyond divine & luminous, she is a STAR like no other in the history of Hollywood & Broadway!
how could this movie be a flop was one of the best performances from Julie! Many to follow Just purely incredible!
+Victoria Smith -- Sadly it was the time of the Viet Nam war and musicals of this high caliber were "out dated" (not to me of course). This was actually about the very last big musical. Things were so serious then that the public could find little humor nor enjoyment in great films like this. It has ALWAYS been one of my favorites.
TUNE THATPIANO Wow, thanks for the back story. That certainly explains things and is very interesting indeed.
pippin 1964 i love the Sound of Music, Mary Poppins movies Julie made timeless & iconic! Disappointed that ppl could not appreciate her versatility with this amazing phenomenal movie! Victor Victoria in the 80's s both movie & Broadway were smash hits tho!
Any info on how I can get hold of the full movie STAR? Would really appreciate it. Looked it up on Amazon & Netflix! No luck! Thnx:)
pippin 1964 thank you! I guess I'll have to get it on DVD! I have almost all of her movies from Amazon & Netflix:)
Signed an online petition to " Publish the Julie Andrews Hour in DVD"! Would really be awesome if they do!
Amazing how Julie is loved , she appeals to all generations, what a treasure! She is my queen!
Just seen it 09-11-17, they had it on Decades Channel! Love Julie even more ! She was super sensational on STAR!
My God, this performance makes me wish there'd been an entire Broadway revival of Lady in the Dark with Julie Andrews in the lead! But seriously, I know the full Broadway show this is from extremely well, and it's way overdue for a major revival (perhaps with a few minor updates to the book). Sutton Foster could be a good choice for the title role these days.
This musical biography of England's very talented Gertrude Lawrence is just one of many energetic performances by Julie Andrews. And Ruth Jenkins You are right she does most if not all her stunts. It's a real classic.
MD T
I enjoyed this film too. Released at a time when big budget musicals were on the wane in popularity and lots of Julie's fans did not want to see her in such a role. She herself admitted later she was miscast as Gertrude Lawrence. This was discussed at length in the book Roadshow which I recommend to anyone interested in learning about the rise and demise of musicals in the 1960s. Donald Brooks costumes and Michael Kidd's choreography are wonderful In this number. Julie is also wonderful in the Burlington Bertie number which you can also see on UA-cam. In my opinion, her two best numbers in the film. You might also enjoy seeing Ginger Rogers interpretation of the Ballad of Jenny number in an excerpt from her film on the life of Gertrude Lawrence entitled Lady in the Dark. You will find this on You tube as well. Thank you xNYr for posting this wonderful number from Julie's film STAR! I hope it will be shown again in a retrospective on the Big Screen again to be truly appreciated.
Actually, Lady In The Dark is not about Gertrude Lawrence at all. Ms. Lawrence starred in the show on Broadway. Had Julie Andrews not suffered vocal damage, following the Broadway Victor/Victoria, she was scheduled to do a revival of Lady In the Dark. And whether or not she feels she was miscast in STAR!, no one else could have done justice to Miss G. and that era. Noel Coward (Gertrude Lawrence's dear friend) reportedly saw STAR! and liked it quite a lot. Had the late 1960's been a less tumultuous time, this film (and several other musicals that were not so well received) would have been tremendously successful. Happily they are on film and can be appreciated for their artistic excellence today. I was fortunate to see STAR! on the big screen in a movie theater and it is spectacular. For those who might not know, STAR! was directed by Robert Wise who directed The Sound of Music.
pippin 1964 Julie I believe was a perfect fit for the role. Her performances onstage singing & dancing are all spectacular , this may be true that GL could not do them as superbly as Julie, but I still appreciated & loved it! I can't say Julie is or was a miscast! She did GL justice with her brilliant artistry! We have to separate Julie as the amazing sweet person she is to the roles she plays!
Roadshow was fucking fantastic.
She did it the best way ever. There will never be any other sweet perfect voice to sing like her.
I love Julie Andrews she is a awesome actress I love all of her movies she is wonderful she is still awesome she is so good as a queen in Princess Diaries and a mother in Sound of Music and a Nanny in Mary Poppins and Actress
+Alexadra Alberti I had no idea this was the same person as in those movies!
No other STAR will ever be ! Julie you are the Queen of the WORLD😘 The whole world adores you
I love this movie! Hard to believe ppl then failed to appreciate Julie's brilliant & extraordinary artistry! She was most loved with her roles in the SOM & Mary Poppins movies she made iconic that ppl bypassed & overlooked her amazing versatility & talent!
What a STAR! Versatile & perfect in everything she does! Who does not love Julie? She is adorable!
that is hows it done!!!
Why wasn't this huge?!? America, why?!?
I can't even get this its out of stock with Amazon!
Love love Julie in this! Another brilliant creative artistry of Julie's!
I love julie soooooooooooooooooooooo much
I need to see her
I no it of by heart
Julie Andrews come please I love you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much
I so love this song and Julie Andrews.. She is such a STAR.. :)
She is iconic ❤️
"Jenny and her saga
Prove that you are gaga
If you don't keep sittin' on the fence..."
I must've seen this movie about 5 times and loved it more everytime.....
Best ever performance from Julie Andrews. Robert Wise achieved some of his best work. Sod the critics.
Julie’s look around the stage from 1:21-1:25 says everything about how Gertrude feels to finally have discovered success, the happiness at hearing applause for something she’s a part of. Julie will never be matched as a consummate performer.
I have nothing but respect and admiration for her.
An absolute tour de force by Julie! I love this number and never tire of watching it!
I simply adore this!
she was such a babe
Best ever I have seen it1000 times. :)
Fun fact - the author of the book for 'Lady in the Dark' also directed Julie in 'My Fair Lady' and 'Camelot.'
Moss Hart
Thanks to her own talent too!
This is so Diana Vreeland style it's unreal!
That Andrews did her singing LIVE - no backing! - is absolutely INCREDIBLE considering the level of physicality involved
WOW! How magically this opens! I miss this kind of 'choral choreography' where the entire troupe dances on a big musical production number, and love the professional acrobats used to best effect. Note that her going through the ring of fire represents Jenny going to Hell, where she's greeted by the two devils! Quite a production number. Well done, all--and especially Julie!
Jenny's Saga by the greatest singer ever, évidemment, a great story! Thanks Julie Andrews! Merci beaucoup for this incredible stereophonic, Technicolor and Cinemascope évocation! Merci beaucoup! Top singer! Emmanuel from Paris
"Star!" was photographed in 70mm (Todd-AO) the DVD version uses a 35mm transfer (which loses picture information on the sides mostly and the soundtrack is compressed) while the 1995 LaserDisc uses the 70mm image transfered from the Original 65mm Camera Negative (not only uncompressed soundtrack from the 70mm 6-Track Stereo) and also has the Intermission/Entr'acte and Extended Cast Credits both of these elements are missing in the DVD version.
BRILLIANT
No she didn't...they said that it would be to noticeable so she did all the stunts herself! Makes me love her even more!
For the "Do Re Mi" sequence in The Sound of Music she learned to play the guitar!
There are at least two shots where it's not her: [1] The flip after she jumps into the arms of the acrobats [2] Sliding down through the ring of fire.
@@ericgrunin you can tell it's certainly not a double, as her voice jumps a bit when she's leaping around!
@@simonramsay6080 The two spots I'm referring to have no singing, they're clean cuts where you don't see her face. The ring-of-fire stunt is more dangerous than the others, there was no reason *not* to use a double.
@@ericgrunin I see what you mean, yes :-|
LEGEND
That high note at the end! I've never heard her sing in that key at any other time, anywhere! B-)
Actually, you have. The final note in “Do Re Mi” and the note she hits in the film version of Victor/Victoria when she auditions are the same note. They’re both B-flat.
@@ElleCee62978 I didn't know that. I thought her end note on Do Re Mi sounded a bit different from this; I had thought that might have been top C!
@@simonramsay6080 Nope. She hits a B in “The Physician” from this film. I am a semi-retired opera singer who sang a lot of Julie’s stuff.
@@ElleCee62978 that's really interesting, both that you're a semi-retired opera singer and that you used to sing a lot of Julie's songs. She always used to sing at the right speed for the bit of the song she was at, & I'm aware that Julie was singing Bel Canto when she was in My Fair Lady & Camelot.
When I'm upset, I go to my "Julie Andrews" playlist and listen to songs from the Sound of music, Mary Poppins, Star and the Julie Andrews hour and some she sang with Harry Belafonte less than 15 minutes later I'm my usual happy self again
I love this movie! Hard to believe it didn’t do so well in the box office?!? Why America???
well, one of most dazzling numbers in a Julie Andrews musical unappreciated at the time. but look at it now. we won't see this kind of number again any time soon. great song. great singer. great production, to savor.
Thanks for your comment, Richard. Couldn't agree more. 👍
@@TheXnyr thank you. watching this number again, to my usual delight. Lennie Hayton, Lena Horne's husband, as the arranger, added to its excellence. told Lena that, in our interview later, and she agreed, altough they had been divorced at that time. no matter. this number stands, as we who are discerning enough to appreciate it, still agree. thank you again, mr xNYr. thank you, always.
The Great Julie Andrews in one of her Greatest film role, to me this was not a flop but a triumph, it was written for her by the same people who wrote, produced and directed her in The sound of Music...If you get a chance to see it...DO!
This movie just never caught on.
Julie Andrews is the Best ever, no way, Nothing to be added. Merci beaucoup! Emmanuel from Paris
We all think of her in 2019, Mary Poppins she was, a great dancer and a perfect singer no doubt, merci beaucoup for your perfect art! Emmanuel from Paris
Jenny, an historical woman in Hollywood history no way! BRAVO for this incredible rendering original print! MERCI BEAUCOUP in stereophonic soundtrack, Technicolor and Cinemascope wide screen incredible rendition! MERCI BEAUCOUP from FRANCE Paris. Emmanuel
Superb!
STAR one of my fav musicals ever loved Julie and Daniel
Been looking for the full movie! From the clips I have seen this movie is spectacular! Would love it to watch in its entirety
I Love The Movie and I Love U writing this.
I must've seen this movie about 4 times......way back in the late 60,s.....
Love this movie!
pure perfection!
Those twin red devils are so wickedly fabulous
The best she's ever looked.
Julie looks Gorgeous.
Her wig and makeup.
Jack Warner should have given her My Fair Lady.
The musical is an vehicle for Julie's extraordinary artistry and I adore Star! much more than TSOM and MP. She is perfect in every way in Star!
Her high b-flat was SOOOOO good!
A singer she is and was used to be! Nice cinemascope print that time. Thanks! Emmanuel de Paris
I love it so much!
Love the high note at the end!
Disney truly suffocated this woman and her career. She was amazingly multitalented.
It wasn't Disney's fault, he gave her her first big break in movies. It was the astonishing success of the sugary Sound of Music that led to the public seeing her as a "secular saint". After Poppins in 1964 she didn't make a film again for Disney until 2001. It is said she might have done Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) but wouldn't commit and Angela Lansbury won the part.
YOU GO GIRL!
LOVE this
Dame Julie Andrews as the ringmaster for Cirque du Enfer!
Spectacular
very cool and good tune, keep this good work up
Now THAT'S a number!
Julie was quite attractive and athletic as well as a brilliant voice
Super!!!
Super divine that’s Julie!
Pretty f*ckin awesome if I do say so🌟
Woah watching this is like watching a weird dream.
I remember being stunned at the negative reviews this movie got how in the world could anything with her in it be bad
Julie what a gift U truly are
Star is the over looked Andrew's vehicle, and in my opinion, better than Sound of Music & Poppins.
I’m so sad this isn’t on Spotify
Love Love ,Jenny make her mind up ...
there is a recent version on the web, take a look, it's very nice:
Orchestra da Tre Soldi - "Saga of Jenny" (Kurt Weill, arr. Orchestra da Tre Soldi)
I agree. How could this have flopped.
Hello-
hopefully they will release a blu-ray of the complete roadshow cut.
Wouldn't that be lovely... I'm still waiting for "On A Clear Day" sigh When I see all the trashy titles get released on blu-ray these glorious films languish.
i know the moves and lyrics to all the songs in every Julie movie xD

You're welcome Chris.. glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for posting. BTW Star! is out on DVD, tho it might be out-of-print, not sure.
@@jeffghitelman6809 I'll look into that, Jeff. Thanks.
"Star" was a great film solely for musical numbers brilliantly performed by Andrews. The rest of the movie was only so-so. It was essentially a whitewash of Lawrence's life which in reality was varied, interesting and tragic.
She's dynamite !
Julie Andrews must be very trusting to let people flip her and catch her. Me on the other hand not so trusting. This song is very catchy I sung it for almost 3 days before. Julie Andrews is simply marvelous and practically perfect in every way or character.
In *Mary Poppins* she was flown on a wire!
Didn’t know that she was such a good dancer
