Thank you for doing tests like these so we don't have to! I have the Dacian and have been using it for EDC. It makes a fantastic on the hip belt carry but a lousy pocket carry. Mine did not rattle in the sheath at all. Hopefully Benchmade will release a better sheath in the future or the aftermarket will have some better options but its good enough for me. I love the idea of a small fixed blade for EDC, and now thanks to this video I know the limits of my gear and I don't plan batonning wood or doing a tip test on it haha.
I have been carrying the one without the coating since the day of release and have used the blade regularly since I purchased it. I have not seen this noisy wiggle that the “UA-camrs” are complaining about.
You know, love him or hate him but JoeX has opened a lot of people's eyes with regards to steels. He's shown that most of the so called super steels aren't very super when stressed. It's actually the "budget" steels that perform the best there. The Cold Steel SR-1 light for instance, that 8cr13mov version easily outlasted the high end s35vn one. After testing all of these low end to high end knives he said AUS8 is actually his favorite most durable steel. Now of course the dude abuses his tools but I can't deny it's radically changed my views on "high end" knives.
@@Btc1ml For this knife 3V would be a much better choice. Benchmade used 3V successfully on several iconic fixed blades. CruWear would have been another great choice. But MagnaCut is what sells right now.
@@Btc1ml what is your use case? EDC, hunting, bushcraft? The Dacian will do all these things but not as well as Benchmade Intersect, Steep Country and Pukko correspondingly.
Do they fail and break when used as intended? That's the question. Can't imagine you'd forget and stab the tree over 25 times and try to pry the tree apart on a random day lol. Shit, try the warranty anyways. It says that blades they indicate to be allowed to pry can, be used to pry. Even if it doesn't count, the most they can say is no. It's a 400+ dollar knife. What could it hurt?? Plus if they did cover it, what wonderful costumer service! That's worth people knowing!
Benchmade is perfectly capable of making knives that don’t break even during the most severe abuse: 185 SOCP, fixed Adamas, Puukko, Leiku, Bushcrafter… name 2 things these have in common?
I imagine you assumed that snapping it was possible. Good thing you're an engineer. You can buy another one, np 😂. It is a cool design though. It does look good. They caught my eye when they dropped, but I typically don't carry a fixed blade. My mini speedgoat is my favorite small fixed blade. That I own, of course.
Ho boy, sorry for your loss 😢 Good review as always! I've never considered a boot carry, but it's good to know. Also great review of the whole design and sheath. I really dont understand why they dont do good kydex, at this price point it should be a no brainer. It kind of makes me think of the sheath i had with the steep country, pure trash. I wasn't thinking about buying the dacian, i'm still not haha
Kydex is very expensive option for a large batch production planning: because of the labor intensity, the per-unit cost will continue to increase. The injection molding requires $20-30K for up front setup, but then each sheath costs pennies.
Very suprised to see what transpired at the "Tree of Doom VS Dacian" competition / demonstration. The real tragedy has to do with the price we pay as consumers for this brand of knives. Side Note: Using a multitool's pliers could have asisted in removal of the broken blade. Thanks.
Thanks for another informative and interesting review. Please measure the HRC soon! My Dacian with blue handle, fortunately, came with a sheath that locks my knife in like your blue cerakote version. I cannot shake it to get any rattle whatsoever. I feel bad you lost the end of your $270 blade. That had to hurt. I appreciate all the jimping but agree they could have stopped it a little earlier. I will be cleaning my next whitetail deer with my Dacian and that jimping will help significantly with all the fine work I will be doing. Inside your boot is okay but the best EDC carry position is the standard IWB (inside the waistband) concealed carry position used when carrying a handgun. The sheath is narrow and flat against your skin and will sit comfortably inside your pants with the very sturdy clip over your belt. Your shirt covers the handle.
As you’re an avid hunter, I have a question: did you feel that Steep Country model was not up to the task? The blade and handle are the same length as the Dacian and it has extended jimping and a full flat grind. Same HRC, lighter weight, and its MSRP is $180. I seriously wish you could look at them side by side and comment regarding what you think. I intend to use your thoughts in the next video about the Dacian. I mean, it almost fits in Dacian’s sheath. And, off course, thanks for subscribing!
@@CuttingBoardRx I did not consider the Steep Country as I was looking for Magnacut steel. My selection came down to either the Dacian or MKC's new Speedgoat Ultra. I decided on the Dacian due to finding it for $63 less, and the fact the blade is stonewashed versus shiny silver which makes the Speedgoat Ultra look like one of my kitchen steak knives. I also prefer a thinner grip which the Dacian has over the Steep Country. For self-defense, the Dacian knife and sheath lend themselves to comfortable concealed carry more so than the Steep Country. I see the Steep Country with rounded grip and large orange sheath more of something to be tied to my backpack.
BM doesnt know squat about heat treat but they are decent when it comes to customer service. They just might replace your blade so I would atleast try.
Ouch!!! Question - do you know if the UA-camrs who praise Benchmade without showing their flaws receive the knives free? I like Benchmade but the prices are so out of control.
To the best of my knowledge, Benchmade provides free pre production samples to a very small number of hand picked “end users.” I met a young man who works for REI as a wilderness instructor, he evaluated the updated Bushcrafter and made recommendations. He is not a UA-camr. Another example was the Narrows, which was evaluated by a UA-camr, who was then allowed to release a disassembly video the night of the knife’s release. There are a lot of beginner content creators who buy BMs (usually second hand) to boost up the views. What are your thoughts on this topic?
Pronounced Day-she-ah in English. And in Romanian it's waaaay more complicated than I could explain here. The people are Dacii, which is kinda pronounced Dutch-ee. Kinda. Dacia is Dutch-ee-yah. Again, kinda. Romanian isn't the easiest language to get right.
Dang,….. I dont trust magna cut that’s under a coating. I’ve seen videos of a knife maker who had problems with heat treating and it makes me think sometimes they are hiding cracks under a thick coating
I see 14c28n as a better choice. But benchmade can't charge a ridiculous price for that steel. I also can't imagine one situation where a knife in my boots is the answer. Any situation reaching for the knife either leaves you open to a head shot or off balance
@@richardhenry1969 CPM 3V would be absolutely ideal for this knife! Can’t wait for people to get fed up with MagnaCut! It’s everywhere as is mediocrity…
That's not a design flaw. That's called user not understanding that lateral force, on a thin blade, will snap it. 😂. Anyone knows that will happen. You can't JoeX a small knife and expect it to survive.
@@JohnDoe-zb7dz no it's user expectations vs reality. It's like the guy that uses the wrong tool for the job and gets mad cause it doesn't work. It's so stupid that people expect 1 tool to do everything as good as specific tools for specific tasks. I know that I can absolutely beat the crap out of my WTG ARES. But I also know I can process wood with it. While my PM2 will break. But it will slice cardboard better than my ARES.
Believe me, I love a benchmade, but for the prices they charge, and the actual knife you get, their warranty should be better. Its a lifetime warranty like free brake replacement is a lifetime, a catch not worth the price. I found myself carrying my american gerber over anything else, or my esee. If I'm gonne use it hard, i want it to stand up, and if it doesnt, i want the company to stand up behind it. A knifes a knife for using, not looking pretty on youtube cutting paper.
The sheath seems to be a copy ( or at least similar ) to the dynamis alliance style sheaths. Leading me to believe it’s more of an inside the waistband style sheath than a pocket sheath. Interesting design , interesting materials, poor execution.

Looks like you tried to break it and you did 😂😂😂 good job lol
Looked like he was being gentle to me
Benchmade is perfectly capable of making knives that don’t break even during the most severe abuse: 185 SOCP, fixed Adamas, Puukko, Leiku, Bushcrafter… name 2 things these have in common?
@@CuttingBoardRx they are knives and you severely abused them? 😂😂😂
Whether im rooting for the knife or not it always so hard to watch when they snap

You should do a review of the American Tomahawk company scout model fixed blade
@@robshirley3056 Email me to address in the channel description, I’ll give you my mailing address so you could send me a sample😜
The best pocket fixed blade is the Amtac Northman. The best!

Send it in Anyway. Explain what you did and they might actually replace out of customer retention.
Very suprised to see what transpired at the "Tree of Doom VS Dacian" competition / demonstration. The real tragedy has to do with the price we pay as consumers for this brand of knives. Side Note: Using a multitool's pliers could have asisted in removal of the broken blade. Thanks.
I didn’t bring a multitool with me that day
Thanks for another informative and interesting review.
I love how real your reaction to the break was.
@@waltersampsell7358 I think, and I’m not a theatrical expert, perhaps, considering the circumstances, it’s because it was FRIGGIN REAL?!!
🤣😂🥹
That's what made it so entertaining! The authenticity!
Forged knives beat powder metal knives all day everyday.
To the best of my knowledge,
Benchmade provides free pre production samples to a very small number of hand picked “end users.” I met a young man who works for REI as a wilderness instructor, he evaluated the updated Bushcrafter and made recommendations.
Snapped off right on the ridge , just like a chocolate bar . Delicious...thx

Ugh, gonna be reshaping that knife. I kinda like some fixed blades with a shorter blade longer handle ratio
Gimme a break... Break me off a piece of that magna cut!
Having been born in Romania, and having confirmed Dacian blood, the name BM chose came as a total surprise.
Nah, that’s not how this is done. They aren’t heat treating it poorly, they just keeping it on a tougher side
Will benchmade warranty it? Says they guarantee for life

I see 14c28n as a better choice. But benchmade can't charge a ridiculous price for that steel.

And the blades that bend? Design flaw?
@@JohnDoe-zb7dzheat treat flaw. 😂
@@IronButterknife Id rather a blade bend than break in the field. Benefit more than a flaw. General consensus among Bush carafters.

I believe $270 is just ridiculous. Especially for a fixed blade.

The sheath is a joke... and use the knife for its intended purpose.
Here is the script for a video showing using the Dacian for its intended purpose:

Dickie and Willie are playing Call of Duty.
As the new game is loading, Dickie pulls the Dacian out of the sheath attached to his sweat shorts waistband. He says: “bro, check out this sick Benchmade pop gave me for my birthday!”
Willie answers: “that’s rad, bro!”
