Merle didn't hire musicians. He worked with musicians. The band he worked with the most was The Strangers. To say they were great is an understatement.

Shorter songs times were for jukebox play…and that’s not a violin, it’s a fiddle 😂.

Most country fans, at least real country fan rate Merlle #1 artist all time. I agree. Footlights, Kern River, vet the claim , as much the 1st was excellent, dozens as impressive and #1are aboundent. Man's amazing

Musicianship is becoming a lost art. Machines are simulating instruments and it seems like people just don’t want to hear it. It breaks my heart.

I was shocked to see a short video from the Rock this past week of him catching a Bass and he was singing Merle Haggard's "That's the Way Love Goes".
I live not too far from where his family used to live in Muskogee, Oklahoma. I had a high school English teacher who's name was Mrs. Haggard. I provoked my friend into asking her if her dad's name was Merle. She surprisingly responded by saying that her husband was supposed to be related to him.
Merle's parents moved out to California during the time of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, right before he was born. He thought he was born in Oklahoma, but he wasn't. He used to do a lot of petty crime, and the judge got tired of it and sentence him to San Quentin maximum security prison in California for a few years. But he got out in 1 year on good behavior.
While he was in San Quentin, Johnny Cash infamously came and performed there for the prisoners. Merle pursued music after he got out, and became a legend in the genre of country. He also did great impersonations. There's a video of him doing some, and one was Johnny Cash. And Johnny Cash came out and sang with him. It's cool to think about how his journey came full circle, from him seeing Johnny perform as a prisoner to him singing with Johnny on TV while doing an impression of him.

Merle is being classified as an "Americana/Roots musician and that is incomplete. Merle wrote most of what he sang as well as covering some other writers that touched him. He had a great sense of humor, too. And he never quit learning and researching music from many genres. It can take a while to read the history and listen to the music he studied, but he was a Master of music, (he had several honorary doctorate degrees, ditto J. Cash). Merle's music was honest and listeners appreciate honesty. Merle was a child of music and grew into a teacher of music. Listen to Kern River, it has all the elements of traditional "folk" music; if you didn't know he wrote it, you would swear it was an old Anglo-Saxon folk song.

3:41 - I agree.. Even with a lot of music that they call "country" nowadays, I often feel like I can't discern hardly any instruments in the song. It just sounds like a mesh of noise with a person singing.
And I say this as someone who's always had an ear that gravitates heavily to the instrumentation. I also play a little guitar at a very basic level.

You like story telling, so you might like Merle Haggard singing with Willie Nelson and Toby Keith doing Poncho and Lefty. It’s better live. The video… minus Keith… is cheesy.😊 That said, my favorite version of this song is by Emmylou Harris. Still, Merle… and it’s pronounced mrrl … Wiilie together were brilliant singing anything. Merle’s biggest hit was Okie From Muskogee.

@HIM_066xMusicReactions Lynard Skynyrd covered Haggard's song honky tonk night time. in it Ronnie VanZant says this during Steve Gaines guitar solo. I'm assuming he was talking about one of Merle's guitarist
