    Hey guys. I have been workin on cars for 35 years and have changed hundreds of rear calipers and pads with integrated ebrake in the caliper. This video is spot on and a money maker for anyone who runs into this style caliper with (EPB) Electronic parking brake. The one I did yesterday was a 2015 Mazda CX-5, and I could not have done it without this video. So Techs and DIYS PAY ATTENTION! This is THEE video to watch! 100 thumbs up!       Moe Yonkin Awesome! The method for the electric rear parking brake is different on my Golf R. It involves hand-winding the disassembled electric motor back if you don’t have the computer to do it. QUESTION: what’s the brake bleed order on a 2017 CX-5? Again, my Golf R is different than most cars.

    Just followed your video to do this on a 2018 Mazda 6. Caliper design difference was minor but procedure is the same. Thanks. Great video.
    Mazda engineer who designed electric parking brake should be tar and feathered.
    I was told by the dealership to bring it in because i didnt have the tools to replace the pads. They lost my business now.
    10 min each on front.
    Back is around 20 min due to motor.

    Nice simple video. Question though, why didn't you guys just put the EPB into maintenance mode instead of having to manually take off the EPB, turning with torx bit and compressing the piston? My understand was that putting the EPB in maintenance mode would help you avoid doing all that extra work.

    Thank you for this video, I'm going to be doing the brakes on my spouses 2017 Mazda 6 GT and it has this EPB. The car has 42 000km and the rotors/pads* are destroyed, amazing quality (sarcasm) lol.

    Funny cause (Mazda 2017)requires that it be put in maintenance mode and literally says not to spin the caliper in 😂

      Because spinning it will damage the parking brake motor, but he's removed that motor before spinning it.

    Thanks for the video. But putting the EPB in 'maintenance mode' is the safest way (& recommended by most mechanics), also when it is taken out of maintenance mode it automatically recalibrates itself. There is no need to remove the EPB motor. After completing the PADs/Rotor installation, just pump the pedal a couple of times until firm and then take the EPB out of maintenance mode. The orange dash light will go out.

      My dash light (orange) for the EPB stays on in my 2017 Mazda 6. It was like that when I got it. Trying to go into maintenance mode the red EPB light on my dash starts flashing but I can hear it moving in the back. Thoughts?

    there's built in maintenance mode, which doesn't need to disassemble it , just squeeze back like front calipers

    There are another way using car elctronic control;
    1- car off ,,keep push brake button off ,, full gas throttle ,, push start buttom 3 times until yellow brake light on ,, hand brake will be released on maintenance mode ,, when you finsh maintenance do same steps but the hand brake button on

    There is no need to take the Brake Motor Off. Use a 12V DC Battery and Jump-It. Once you do that, you will know which way it will "retract".

    One note, you could have used maintenance mode to save you the step of removing the motor. Enabling maintenance mode allows the piston to be fully compressed without removing the EPB motor. One note if you do use maintenance mode, DO NOT ENABLE WHEN THE CALIPER IS OFF!! It will fully extend the piston and you will have to pull the motor and rotate the shaft clockwise untill it releases the EPB. Engage maintenance mode prior to even pulling the wheel off just to be sure you dont run into any problems.

      I just did this on my cx-5 yesterday. Spent probably four hours trying to get the pistons back in on BOTH SIDES, and now the parking brake doesn’t function properly. Absolute nightmare.

      I did this on my mazda and the caliber fully extended out and bow the caliper head came off of the rubber gromet wouod this mean i need to replace the whole caliper system ??? Please help 🙏

    Thanks for posting this video! I consider myself relatively intelligent - but I now know what the screw hole is for on the brake rotor. For years I was just slamming away at it with a sledge hammer to get it off. HAHAHAHAHA.

    Use only silicone grease around the seal (at 6:00) Vaseline contains petroleum and the seal will swollen

      @Peppermint Hi, we have been using petroleum white jelly for over 20 years now, on oil filter seals, injector seals, transmission o-rings, just to name a few and have never had any issues or swelling. Once it reaches a certain temperature point, the PWJ melts off, it is just used to help for initial lubrication so seals dont pinch or tear when being put back togeather.

    Thanks for making the video. Would it be easier to enter the maintenance mode which retracts the electric parking brake motor? No scan tool required...just follow the steps to enter maintenance mode. I have a 2016 CX5 so I'm going to find out eventually.

      We have tried entereting maintenance mode with and without a scanner tool with no success
      This way works beautifully, as we have done multiple times with 0 issues!

      You can try this procedure for maintenance mode.. press and hold accelerator pedal and EPB switch , ignition on wait 3sec, switch off and on ignition 3 times with in 5sec yellow EPB light should stay on indicating it is in maintenance mode.. to turn off maintenance mode same procedure yellow EPB light should turn off

      If using the Mazda maintenance mode first, you can no longer spin the caliper piston in. It has to be pressed in just like a regular caliper piston. ua-cam.com/video/UPvvNYkNuu4/v-deo.html

      you will have to put vehicle into ignition mode or start the car to release park brake. you can engage park brake any time

    Hi, I hope you're responding to this thread still, I've a 2017 Mitsu Outlander with epb behind the rear caliper. My question is can I retract the caliper piston the same way you did, or does it have to be put on maintenance mode like the dealership wants? Thanks

    What size is the bolt you used to release the rotor from the hub?

      Hi Alan, Bolt used to release rotor from the hub shown from 1:12 - 1:30 of the video, was a 12mm bolt, but just double check to see if it fits by screwing the bolt in a couple of threads by hand to see if thread sizes match, as some thread sizes vary.

      The bolt needed to remove the rotors from the hub turns out to be a M8 with 1.25 threads. I used one that was 40mm long, and it worked great. I squirted some liquid wrench in the hole and used a wire brush to clean it up before inserting the bolt. Much better than violently whacking the rotor with a hammer, especially while all four corners are up on stands.

    Not sure if I had to do this, but I just put my 2017 Mazda 6 into service mode and it fully retracted the electronic parking brake. Had no issue compressing the caliber piston either. Once I was all done the car recalibrated the electronic parking brake and it was all said and done; just a few button presses

      Hi @Sammy War , you can pump the brakes after each wheel or at the end, as long as you pump it before you drive the car orelse your pedal will go to the floor while driving if you forget to pump

      Hi @zack knox , best way to find out, is to put a little bit of pressure pushing onto the piston, and twist rear of the caliper clockwise. It should turn soft and freely. As you turn, push the piston back, as shown in video

    So I have a 2015 mazda 6 with a handbrake for the parking brake. Do I need to have the parking break pulled up while I change the brakes?

    You work to hard .....you don't have to take all that apart......a 9v batery and 2 wires will do the job ...just unplug the connector use batery ...job done ....when you finish just apply the parking brake 3 times to adjust and Happy days ....

    Thanks for the video I would have been in all sorts after watching some other videos about turning the engine on and off three times whilst depressing the brake? 😂 This video was spot on although living in Scotland I found the bottom bolts on the caliper housings a real bitch to get off due to the ends protruding and attracting road salt ect. Still got there in the end fitting brembo discs and pads on my Mazda 6 tourer 69 plate.

      Bottom bolt difficult to get off because the caliper pin rusted or corroded in the caliper bracket. Replace caliper bracket as even if you get the pin out and find it rusty there is no brush to get into the caliper bracket to clean the rust out and once the caliper bracket is rusty it will happen again.

      Im about to attempt this soon on my 17 mazda 3 that has the same system. So if I put it into maintenance mode I will not need to remove the motor and back off the 40mm torx? Im a little weary with the epb and I really want to make sure I dont damage anything

      Mr Selma no you don’t have to. Just take the bracket off and push the caliper back in.

    Are any of these reverse threaded for the Mazda 6? Because I'm working on the driver side rear for a 2018. But I can't seem to retract the Piston even though I'm turning it. If I'm turning the caliper piston clockwise, I can't turn the t40 screw clockwise because it stay tight but I can turn it counter clockwise.

      U don't need to turn the piston. When u PUSH piston all the was retracted make sure ur slotted 9 12 3 and 6 o'clock

      We did not enter any maintenance mode for this car as it did not allow us to, with or without scanner tool.
      Follow complete instructions made in this video step by step and you will be ok 👌
      Dont forget to un plug motor and disconnect, before pushing piston back, wind back screw behind calliper as shown

      I work for honda and i know all about those EPB modules on the back of the calipers. I personally wouldn't recommend anyone force pushing the caliper piston in with the module on the caliper. It can potentially break small parts that aid the EPB to work... Thats just mine opinion. I've also heard of people doing the honda vehicles with the EPB and damaged components so that's why i say i wouldn't recommend it. Some vehicles do have maintenance mode but then again sometimes it doesn't function on the vehicles often. I've done many honda's and just pulled off the EPB like he did.

    Putting your rear ebrake into maintenance mode is the correct way to work on the rear brakes and the easiest option.

      This is great for a dead battery or moving a vehicle that won't turn on. If putting in maintenance mode isn't a option.

      No, as long as caliper w pad are back on rotor, the wheel doesn't matter. I sometimes take back out of maintenance mode w tire off to watch piston

    You are saying that you cannot get the car to enter maintenance mode? Do you know why that is? And if I’m thinking right? Basically entering maintenance mode will just reset the caliper to the full off position. Which is basically what you did just manually. I did brakes on my cx5 and wasn’t aware of this procedure, and now one of the calipers is hanging up. Do you think if I put it into mainenance mode, and then take it back out that should reset the epb position to the correct position?

      Once you take the epb motor off from the back.of the caliper, screw it back all the way untill there is no thread left. Then retract piston all the way like a normal brake change. Once all done amd epb motor is ready to instal, unscrew rear of the caliper half a turn to allow free play, then you can bolt up the motor and finish your installation.
      Check video thoroughly to understand the correct procedure.

      hi i dont reccomend doing this on VW as their braking system is more sensitive and may faults may occur.

    Thanks for the video, I am having issues pushing the piston back in. I took the caliber off, then attempted to use maintenance mode which ended up with a decompressed piston from the e brake, fully decompressed which I believe is causing the issue, now I cannot get the caliber back on and I cannot turn the e brake off(blinking on the button). Any advice?

      push caliper piston back manually like shown in video, put everything back togeather. once everything is all on, pump the brake pedal, install scanner onto OBD and clear brake fault code.

      You are supposed to put the EHB into maintainence mode before starting the job.

      Did this exact thing yesterday, spent about 4 hours trying to spin both of my rear brakes back onto the screw inside the caliper, and now parking brake doesn’t engage on the left side. Absolute nightmare.

      Hi @willy lamb
      Brake bleeding on any car is in this order.
      - 1st wheel in the front closest to brake master cylinder
      -move to next front wheel
      -next will be rear wheel (behind one closest to brake master cylinder)
      -last wheel will be one furthest from brake master cylinder

      Moe Yonkin Thanks, yeah that was a few months ago. The CX-5 was this weekend. Got it done good though! Pedal travel is still really long however. I know the pads, rotors, and fluid is good and without air though.

      AutoMotiv8ed not any car. The correct way to bleed any car is going by the way the manufacturers recommend every car is different depending how the hydraulic system is set up most cars are furthest away from master cylinder first but I would check with manufacturers

    Out of curiosity, why is it necessary to engage the parking brake prior to doing the brake job?

      Hi @procharger94 , disengage parking brake beforehand because caliper will not come off otherwise and will cause problems if forced off. Engage parking brake when job is complete, to make sure it is working and no fault has occurred during procedure.

      @son tran pushing the piston back, no turning required.. this tool has the multi function on twist back and push back, it is the only tool i had available at the time

    I work for honda and i know all about those EPB modules on the back of the calipers. I personally wouldn't recommend anyone force pushing the caliper piston in with the module on the caliper. It can potentially break small parts that aid the EPB to work... Thats just mine opinion. I've also heard of people doing the honda vehicles with the EPB and damaged components so that's why i say i wouldn't recommend it. Some vehicles do have maintenance mode but then again sometimes it doesn't function on the vehicles often. I've done many honda's and just pulled off the EPB like he did.

      Hi @jjazmin , both sides are the same, both with the electric motors. Follow the same step for the other side, but make sure to do 1 side at a time

      Does this have to be repeated for both sides? As far as putting it into service mode? Or can I just put it in that service mode, then do the rotors and pads on the rear. Drop it, then do the rotors and pads in the front. Then after all that’s done can I take it back out of service mode ?

      @@jjazmin on this specific car we did not enter a service mode to perform this job although some Audi's, Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz require you to enter a service mode before you replace brakes.
      If so, release electric park brake, enter service mode before you start working on the car, do the front and rear brakes and finish off the job, once everything is done and brake pedal is pumped and gone hard, you can exit service mode then test the electric park brake to make sure its all in working order.

    Perfect how not to do it video. You put the car into maintenance mode and you can just push the piston back in. And it's not a good idea to goob up the sliders of the pads with grease because all the sand and dust and dirt will stick to it and lock up the pads. The grease goes under the stainless (sliders) hardware to prevent rust build up under there causing the pads to stick.

    you should be using a scanner tool to reset the electronic parking brake (piston)!! When your replacing a $1000 caliper motor in two months you'll see why the scanner is the recommended way.

      We have done many cars this way for many years, also reccomended by other mechanics and have never had any issues
      Different for VW, AUDI, BMW, which we only do with scanner as they are very sensitive when it comes with brakes..
