You pick your woods based on the colors you want to use in your project. Different shades of brown = Western Cedae, Butternut, Walnut. Red = Cherry, African Mahogany. Yellow = Yellowheart. Purple = Purpleheart. Grey = Blue pine or Beetle Killed Pine. Black = Wenge, Ebony. Green = Poplar. White = Holly, Aspen.
Then you have to think what color the wood will be after it ages a few of years. Padauc and Bloodwood will give you beatiful red colors, but, after two or three years, will turn brown or almost black. All wood changes color as it ages. You can find all shades of brown/tan in Western Cedar, but, after a few years they will all change to the same color.
There is no blue wood. Blue Pine is actually grey. If you need blue you have to stain the wood. Look at the grains of woods and think of how they can be used. If you have a piece that requires rocky ground, look at wood burls. You're going to learn a lot about different types of woods as you progress.
