RIP Karen Young gone too soon but your songs will live on :(
She had a pure soulful jazzy voice.Karen you are one of those voices that is the bomb!!!
I was devastated to learn she died of a bleeding ulcer at only 34 years old. She was a fabulous and highly underrated talent. Serious scatting and an awesome style. She was Queen and ruled this tune.
She was more than 34. She was born in 1951 and died in 1991
She was 39
@ChrisT-O correct. I remember when she first came out i was a teen but to me she looked in her 40s
The singer, Karen Young, was an incredibly soulful talent. She had the personality of a funky blues singer wrapped up in a white body moving to a disco beat. There were a lot of folks like her back in those days, before everybody got all bougie and stand-offish.
Alicia Bridges?
Observen la sencillez de esos talentos y comparen con esos payasos de ahora con disfraces y coreografia para cubrir su música de fábrica.
Good times.
It was a minor top 40 hit in the UK at the tail end of that summer of 1978. I was only 13 then but used to hear this on the radio sometimes. Now I know what she looked like. She was 27 then and it's sad that she didn't get to see 40.
Yes, but the big surprise for most of us was that she wasn't Black. They announce her name in the club when this came out (1978), and then this pale-skinned woman walks out and we're wondering "Who is this?" And then the song starts, and we all know the intro, and our jaws drop to realize that SHE is Karen Young. And then it got great...
2024… still loving and listening to Ms Karen Young and Hot Shot!
I'm 49 yrs old. This was the first 45 single my Mom (RIP) bought for me and my older brother in Bedstuy Brooklyn.. it was the hottest jam that summer
Sampled in Indo Silver Club
It was the hottest joint that summer...your right,it was played EVERY WHERE
Awesome time!!!🎉😊
Lol...I spent just about the whole summer on Tompkins ave. that year....too young to travel anywhere else by myself
Music helps soothe pain ( la música ayuda a calmar el dolor )
Why is everyone talking about her appearance ? FFS, she has a great voice and that's what counted !!!!
Exactly. This is a spectacular classic disco song, not the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. It's really incredible how many ignorant, stupid and nasty people that exist in this world.
Those millenial airheads know nothing about fashion & old school disco💃🏃💃🏃💃🏃💃
I just spent an hour listening to 'new hits' - all whiny, talentless, garbage ballads with thin voices stetched to no return. The future is bleak.
@@thelastbaronweeren5549 songs? Modern pop knows not the meaning of the word. They all sound like they are going to burst into tears, throw up, or just have a serious human race failure 🤔
She doesn't even look bad either so yeah, kinda weird.
Disco... one of the most underrated genres in music...
Fabulous, timeless song, great composition, craftsmanship and magnificent voice!
ThelemicMagick I Know...right?!!! And NONE of us EVER had a weight problem cuz we danced our asses off to the best music of the 20th century. And with AIDS, some were dancing like there was no 2morrow!
I love disco.
I agree with you.
93s! I totally agree..
Yea aside from Flashdance (and Donna Summer til she died) dance music got progressively worst and worst til now it is pathetic
This was and still is a GREAT dance song. So well sung and delivered by Diva Karen Young. That scatting in those moments is fierce. Love it!
Ravene Lady: Scat is scarce.
so sad she died so young....would have loved to have her on my fm radio show
Yes she was a SERIOUS scatter and had an amazing voice. She sung the hell outta this song. Highly underrated talent.
Honey I remember my mom dancing to this getting ready for Studio 54. Blue eye shadow glistening, platform to the ceiling 🤣 Rip mommy😎
I remember dating a Girl who said she didn't like this song and from that moment I knew we didn't have a future.
You made the correct choice in ditching that girl 😂
I’m in awe of people who can sing and move like this... sooo natural. I love her voice... I love the disco era!
One of disco's high points. Rest in peace Karen and I know you can hear me.
Karen was a friend of mine in Philly. She was an angel!
I had no idea that Philly had so many amazing Blue Eyed Soul Singers from her, Len Barry, and Vickie Sue Robinson not to mention Hall & Oates.

Still one of my favorite disco songs, good music stays great forever. RIP Karen Young, gone much too soon...
R.I.P.
Wonderful.
I was actually dancing next to her at Infinity in NYC in 1978. We were dancing to Hot Shot actually. She seemed to be having a great time and looked like she was a lot of fun to be around.
Infinity was a great club. So sad when it burned down.
When this came out - and for decades - I thought this was sung by a Black woman! Just shows you that music is the language of everyone! On par with the greats: Donna Summer, Thelma Houston, Diana...etc...
me to...i thouhgt the singer was black
No clue she was WHITE! Lolol
Blue eyed soul
I saw Karen Young at the 2001 nightclub in Pittsburgh when.I was 21 back in 1979. I was surprised she was a heavy set white woman
This will NEVER EVER get old!!! I've loved this song since the day I first heard it; I'm 54 and still listening; played it this morning on my drive into work!
This is a freaking timeless song i really love it.
WHAT A TUNE !!!. I'm surprised nobody's even mentioned the Hot Shots tune for the great shots in ITV snooker. Been going for years. They're probably not snooker minded.
The vocal delivery is insane. So glad my family was into funk, soul and disco. Always loved this song.
My all-time favorite disco song.......Latin beat, powerful vocals, great percussion, killer break. RIP Karen
Memories of '78
What ya'll youngins know 'bout this immortal jam?
That's when cool was still authentic!
Alas, what a fleeting moment in the annals of American history this was-when the music was smokin' hot, the dance floor was filled to capacity---and, the morale was as liberating as the era that so quintessentially defined it. Rest in eternal peace, my dearest Karen Young---the ride was one of delirious rapture-to present day, hypnotic effect!
+Richard Iritano Your eloquent description of that era was most accurate. I'm so glad that I lived during it.
Thank you, Charles C. But, how sad that so many of the 'oh so brief' disco era that was carried by a somewhat stable rank and file (who kept the momentum strong and relevant), didn't know what they had until it was gone, baby, gone (through no fault of their own, mind you).
Now, in our post capitalist era of American Neo-Feudalism, Neo-Fascism and Neo-Bolshevism (that has been FOISTED upon the other side of the Atlantic by a 'Hijack-And-Hostage' government coup (so ordered by their corporate bought henchmen), is now completely controlled by voracious oligarchs of epic, humanitarian (and ecological) fail, where the party ended long ago---and, where taking a backward glance to an idyllic time of the disco era (and the night time madness and unique clubs that so defined it), now seems QUAINT and innocent.
Hence, I am very much allergic to all things 21st century---where the mantra, credo and edict of America's betraying-and-failed democratic government (to flag and country) is: 'Delay, Deny---And, Hope That You Die' (where people have actually died), and where the corrupt politicians (not public servants), remind each other: Don't Blow My Scam---And, I Won't Blow Yours!
In the end, I am finally ready for another dimension...
Richard Iritano u
Richard Iritano The manner in which you described the disco era made me cry. Those were wonderful years... when music was REAL music... when disco queens, like Karen Young, Donna Summer, and all the greats, delivered unforgettable songs that made everyone want to make it to the already overcrowded dance floor. Thank you for reminding me of that memorable era.
@@sands_in_taufer I second your emotions.
OMG. I forgot this one. One of the greatest disco songs I danced to back in the day. I also thought she was black, dang she’s SO GOOD.
I loved this song from the day it came out and I thought she was a black singer because she had so much soul. This is one that will remind me of the better days.. luv this. Thank you.
If you compare going out in the 1960s to the disco era what a difference!
It was a revolution
There is a next generation of disco it’s out now
good ol' classic disco that mostly only the True Believers seem to remember
Yeah.
It’s all about the sound back then looks shouldn’t be a big deal
I'm a believer!
Beyond brilliant! Look how much fun everyone is having! Such a stark difference to appearance obsessed nightclubs of the 2010/20s.
love this song,to hell with those who didn't like how she looked, this song was the bomb in jamaica, every juke box from kingston to montego bay had it.
@Willie Gordon Yes, that's exactly what happened. West End Records put the record out with Karen's picture on the sleeve and nobody bought it. So they took her picture off and it sold like hotcakes.
@@thereareotherworlds She looks older than 27 and she's, .. well, white. There was sort of a stigma about older people doing disco records in those days because Percy Faith and Al Martino types were making the younger crowd uncomfortable. But damn, this lady could sing; too bad her career was so short.
And Akron, Ohio!!!
We were rock’n
I remember this from when I was a kid in the seventies. still love it. thanks for posting
Sampled in indo silver club
This song resonated in my brain early this morning and it's been 40 years since the last time I heard it in Miami. That's a sign of a good song! Forget about the condition of my brain. There's a lot of artists that have had beautiful one hit wonders. This is one of those beauties....
It's a shame she was a one hit wonder she certainly had talent unlike some other one hit wonders that had the one hit simply because the record was well produced
❤❤❤ Best disco song ever, never gets old. RIP Karen.
I can remember being 7 yrs old living in Newark nj when I first heard and fell in love with this song..OMG.. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS...💖💖💖💖 U JUST LIT MY FIRE 🤣🤣😂🤣😂👏👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰
Karen and Vickie Sue Robinson had great voices.
R. I. P. both of them.
Love the crowd- looks like a real party and I wish I were there!!
I wish it was 1978 again. This song was HOT back then!

Heard this on a Block party in the summer of 1978 in Brooklyn....on East 96 st between Clarkson and Winthrop......
It was and still a masterpiece of work!

I think I was there
Beautiful Youth, that was Youth, spectacular music, wherever you like from the 70's and 80's you like it.👏👏👏
Karen Young was GREAT!
The name and the voice fooled me all these years!! I love surprises....You dont have to look any special way to deliver the goods!!! And this is a HOT SHOT!!
I was in the seventh grade when this came out . Nice
Cool song! Cool rhytm! Cool video !!!!!! Epic production - and part of my childhood on mtv!!!!!!!
Before Rap was pressed on Vinyl we were spinning this at the Park Jams... Still kills the Dance floor.......
Yes sir nyc park james red hook pj's.coffey park
With this disco-killer on a party, the dancefloor must be filled in 10 sec.
Even in these days.
I can't get enough of this song! Here it is 2021 my disco gene still resides inside. R.I.P. Karen Young & thanks for the memories. Peace
Wasn't into disco music then, but this was one of three or four discosongs that I liked...and still do. A CLASSIC!
This song is a fine gem, Best of Best
... definitely one of the best Disco tracks ever. In my opinion, this was the blueprint of all Disco recordings of that era. The Classic of that excellent genré. I still have the original 12" import copy, borrowed 'permanently' from my father, ha ha ha ha ha ha ... "thanks Dad" R. I. P. 😊👍🏾👌🏾.
Regardless of how she looks, she had a great voice.
What's wrong with her looks.......................!!
Sorry, I was judging her by today's standards. She's a talented vocalist and that's all that matters.
Thanks for your milder comment !
+yvonne243 Nothing wrong with her looks necessarily, its just that when you hear this on the radio you expect some young big bossomed southern blonde, but what you get is my average looking next door neighbor who just got lucky with one song...thats all. :)
And what hit did you have?
Who else is here jammin with me during quarantine ?
Me! I remember seeing her on a Local Dance Show in New York. Philadelphia had some amazing Blue Eyed Soul Singers. Her, Len Barry, Hall & Oates and Vickie Sue Robinson.

One of my Happy Songs.
She means it, dammit! This has to be the horniest disco record ever recorded.
Amazing song to dance to under the bright lights of the disco floor....amazing memories from Minneapolis where I lived for a short time in 1978. This song takes me right back to my fav club the Saloon...
I'm always in the mood for 70s disco music. This is "Hot Shot" by the fabulous Karen Young.

Thanks for posting! Great clear and close up of Karen Young performing--rare to come by.
Eu com apenas 16 anos em 1978 ia para as discotecas em Manaus e curtia The Tramps,Kool and the Gang,The Bee Gees,The Tavares,Donna Summer,Glória Gaynor entre outros,não havia tanta violência.
The greatest summer song that Wildood, NJ heard since Bobby Rydell! Long live the Sundance!
In 1978 I saw Karen "HotShot" Young perform this at The Harbor Island Spa on the Jersey Shore... no stage, she sang right in the middle of the dance floor. She was wearing a blousy floral dress that looked more like a curtain or lamp shade and she was sort of dancing while singing. To be honest she looked very matronly especially to a young guy like me at the time, I may have been idk... 18 or 19. This is not to take away from the song or her singing which for the time was awesome. The song was a club banger! Even today if this song is played at an old school "Disco" night... it crowds the floor.
Dj Tony !How nice you saw Karen Young, a long time ago. I'm happy for you. 👍🇧🇷
I love that you remember she was billed as Karen 'Hot Shot' Young on all the posters. My late friend used to hoop over that! This was his favorite song, at the time I was into more white bread stuff, like Bee Gees, Bob Seger, Linda Ronstadt, & this didn't really appeal to me, but now I appreciate it much more. Thanks for your post.
Loving the hustle dancers in the crowd
Thanks SO much for posting! So many ghost came haunting me when I heard this again for the first time in decades! I remember ppl dropping there drinks to run & flood the dance floors for this back in 80's! I believe it still would~ Rest in peace & thanks 4 ALL the great memories, Karen Young... If U enjoy Karen's voice check out: Earlene Bentley (I'm Living My Own Life/ Caught in the Act or The Boys Come to Town) from the same era circa 1982-84! Another great belt voice!

That break 0:40 is "Vogue" worthy ! I thought her a Black Woman. Woman at 1:49 so sexy. I rewatch mostly just to see her. Who is/was she? She died at age 39 of a possible bleeding peptic ulcer on January 26, 1991. No surprise. Great voice! Big girl BIG HIT back in da day. Forgot about this jammie jam! 1st time and everytime i he(re)ard it I think HOT DAMN!!!😮. Terrible time in my life, though. Back when you didnt have to be thin and outlandishly pretty to be in the business. Just talented. Plain people. Drum break lived on in break dance
