- Ended up spending a night camping in a Bothy/Dubs hut in the lake district. At the start, this trip was meant to be a tent camping overnighter in the lake district, but we came across this Bothy and decided to sleep inside for something different.
We were not expecting other people to sleep in the Bothy/Dubs hut as well.

My dad used to take me out walking every weekend without fail - we roamed our native Yorkshire and all over the lakes. Your lad may not know it now, but you’re forging some of the best memories of his life in videos such as these.
Another fine journey you have taken us on...... Im 63 and disabled so these trails are now but a dream to me,
but its so fulfilling to just armchair it thru your eyes !!!!.....thanks for all you do my friend !!!!!

When the people left there many years ago I wonder them looking back at that place tears in their eyes their venture and the ending it !
Yep, that would not do me at all; leave the Bothies to those who don't like their own company! Glad you tried it for me! Now I don't need to lol
A lot of the mountain bothys in Scotland have been closed because too many people thought that they would be safe from the cold and bad weather in them, and spent the night, but came to a worse end than if they had pushed on. The weather here can change in a heartbeat, and what might look like a nice sunny day can turn soul sappingly wet, foggy, and cold before you have a chance to adapt.
If you are going out in the highlands, please don't plan your route around bothys and caves, but make sure you can either get to your destination, or leave enough time to turn back, and plot out emergency stops along the way. Stay safe.
As a finn I find it amusing you are talking like that about summer weather.
Part of the problem in Scotland (and probably elsewhere) is that people / groups are increasing using the bothys for recreational camping (as opposed to them being a refuge or stop over for hill walkers), and they leave them full of rubbish, beer cans and have no consideration for those coming next.
@@GG-im1cb aye. sadly, its the same people that have got wild camping either banned or regulated in the trossachs. everything is somebody elses responsibility to them. somebody else will clean up when they leave.
People are the biggest problem in nature, humans can be hideous uncaring selfish pieces of sh_t with zero consideration for no one and nothing but themselves, they carry all the crap in then leave it lying around because they couldn't be bothered to carry it back out, most humans are the dreggs and scum of this planet.
@@hornantuutti5157 I’m Canadian, no winter is as bad as ours 😂 over here it’s perfectly legal to break into a private cabin if you need to use it to get away from a snow storm during winter. It’s run on the honour system so thankfully abusing this rule is pretty rare (tho not unheard of).

Enjoyed the video as always. I only slept in one of those huts many years ago in the late 60s. i was 12 years old at the time. We used to call them "Shepherd Huts" they had no home comforts whatsoever. I used to go on shooting trips and usually camped out, but my uncle said we could try one of these places. To be honest, it felt nice to have some room for a change and be completely dry. See you soon. 👍👍👍
I've stayed in dubs hut a couple of times, it didn't have the wood burner then, or the sleeping platforms, it's much better now. They're definitely mountains in the lake District lol. If I remember rightly, anything over 600m above sea level is classed as a mountain 👍🏻
The scenery was Stellar! As with you, I would not enjoy sleeping with strangers in a Bothy. The interiors I have seen on UA-cam show a mass sleeping platform or bunks meant for 2-4 tired hikers seeking shelter. That aside, the Bothy system can be a lifesaver in bad weather.
The number 1 rule in bothy camping is get to sleep first so your own snoring does not affect you!
With Bothies, it tends to be a case of the more inaccessible, the better. This one is on a well-used path, so there will be lots of people in and out. If you go to one that's more out of the way, you'll be less likely to get visitors, and if you do get visitors they'll tend to be people who are out there to enjoy nature rather than have a party.

I stayed in here a few weeks back, 12 of us crammed in. Some were a little loud but soon as a few of us went to get our head down everyone followed suit and was great. Tents are nicer though

To answer your question:
A hill is anything under 1,000ft but there is more to it than that.. In England & Wales a Nuttall is a hill over 2,000ft
In Scotland you have:
Donalds which are hills south of the Highlands over 2,000ft.
Grahams which are Scottish peaks between 2,000 and 2,499ft
Corbetts which are mountains that measure between 2,500-3,000ft
Munros are mountains in Scotland measuring over 3,000ft
- There is also Marilyns which feature all mountains in Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and even the Republic of Ireland with a prominence over 490ft
I'm sure there are more names for hills out there but that's the ones that I know of but really a hill is a hill at the end of the day..
I will be in the Peak District soon for my first ever visit and I can't wait as I have a lot of interesting things planned for that hiking and camping adventure, hopefully all goes to plan.
It is NOT that the Hills are so High; it is that the Valleys are so low!🙂 Mining and erosion have had a lot to do with this landscape.

I stopped in dubs hut briefly last year in torrential weather , dryed some gear , left some gear to collect next morning .quite a few already settled in. I hiked on further to innominate tarn on haystacks , camped the night . Brilliant area .

I once stayed in a bunk house In Scotland another camper snored like the sound of a jumbo jet, allow there was 5 of those jocks and just me I said I bet your misses is glad when you go camping, and he said yes! It hasn't put me off my trips North of the Border be maybe take ear defenders next time!😂😊😅
Unless they packs say otherwise you should discard that water after boiling a ration pack in it

Stopped in a bothy where this one bloke broke wind about every ten minutes as he slept.
The stench was out of this world and we had to blow out all candles for safety reasons
Definition of a mountain in the uk is having a peak higher than 305 meters/1,000 feet ❤

As Julian says it's traditionally 2000 ft in UK which equates to just over 600 m in metric.

Bothy good place for a stop if you are freezing and wet, but as soon as you are dry, if you can stick your tent up away from the place then do it, then return in the morning for a heat up, before popping off. Most are probably the same in a bothy, just wanting heat and to relax, but 7 yeah too much, especially if you are alone and don't know them, best if it's just you and a partner, or another couple is usually ok, but 100% go for the tent if you can. 👍🏼
I've stayed in many bothies, the ones in the lake District can get pretty busy as do some in Scotland, the ones in the kielder forest are a bit more private, they are a lot harder to find scattered about in a forest, plus you get to have a fire as there is a lot of dead wood lying around.
So pleased you have moved on to new pastures as much as I love your channel I was sick of you sleeping in the campsite and the permission woods There is a lot of wild campers out there and they get all over the place You definitely need to keep up

@Sammy Russell Didn't want to be mean just I watch Wardle mcn Adam in the wild bushman in blue they haven't got anywhere near as many subscribers as Dan has they put so much into their channels Somewhere near every episode keeps it fresh
You know he may camp in the same places that seem boring. You mentioned other " wild campers " who put so much into their videos, go off to great places, and have far fewer subscribers. Then, you must ask yourself why so many watch these videos. It's obviously not the areas he's camping, I can only speak for myself now, it's the presenter, he's down to earth, honest and funny, he sugar coats nothing, he's someone so many can relate to, the others you speak of, may want to watch him and see what they are missing in their videos, just my honest opinion on your post,
You have to remember, Dan has a wife and kids and he doesn't have the funds to go too far every week. Keep doing what you're doing Dan. Another great video.

No matter where you are in the world, these traveler's huts attract people...too many a lot of times. Even in grim weather, I preferred my own shelter and would use them to dry gear if needed.
I mean a few young lads and lasses going up and smoking some weed is better than some crazy crackhead smashing the place 😅

Bothy's are a place you dread walking to and then find others inside !! Or just as you have put all the effort in to carry wood etc and to make it warm .Others turn up with nothing .
Great video and really good picture quality. Bothy not for me; a tent gives privacy and personal space things we value when out in the wild. Yes, of course there can be some advantage but overall who needs to be surrounded by complaining strangers. Thanks again!
Just stayed in dubs hut last night with a mate, was 10 other lads aside from us too a few of them camped out then the rest of us squeezed in the bothy.. had a great night loads of good crack all round

You were about a 15mins walk from Dubs Hut to Warnscale Bothy which is very old but picturesque with stunning views down to Buttermere (you can see the path at 24.40 secs while eating your breakfast..follow the fork to the right and down hill. Its hard to see as its very hidden amongst the slate, especially the way we went, up the path from Gatesgarth)

Hi Darren, we popped in that bothy/hut on father's Day my only ever walk with my Daughter and her partner as it was pouring down! A special day! Sharing space with others has its drawbacks such as snoring or farting during night, apparently I do both as does my partner but he is a 🐕, my favourite mountain is near by Dubs Great Gable a real gem, I hope to see you on more Lakeland adventure's, and yes video very good with new gear. Come to Scotland we have plenty mountains and when you're here try the west Highland way its a long walk its hard work but the views will make it all worth your effort the peace and quiet is amazing and if you walk about 14 miles a day you will get to a pub

They fact that this one is so accessible that a group of day trippers wearing white trainers were leaving when you arrived says it all...!
That's was a family with young kids. Plus, a lot of people travel to sleep in them. I get your point, but I think the reason for bothy have changed..
Bothies aren't just for that! They're also intended as another alternative for a night. The only recommendation is that we should never rely on there being a space, and always have at least a bivi bag for shelter.
Looks like a great place to go! It's definitely on my list of places to go and stay.

A mate and I went there in September.
Visited that slate mine,too. Parked there overnight for a tenner (?), I think.
Some great stuff at that mine, made from slate outside the visitors centre, ain’t there.
We stayed up on Brandreth,we great views of Lake Buttermere and Scotland in the distance. We saw that bothey as we were walking up to Brandreth.
Didn’t fancy it, myself.I your planning on more walks up there, try and get up to Three Tarns. Great view of Scafell Pike.

I have been using YHA camping barns recently. You might want to check those out.
If you pay the extra you can have exclusive use of the barn for you and your party. Worth a look if you want the privacy for filming.
There are hundreds of them. There is a years worth of content just reviewing the barns mate.

Don't let it put you off Bothys Dan. Stayed at a couple where I was either on my own or other people turned up. Last time my first night I was on my own then the second another 20 or so people turned up (Not all together). It was a Big Bothy but just got to grin and bare it mate. Oh and I hate the smell of the Devils Lettuce as well!! 🤢
We slept in a mountain refuge hut at the base of mount toubktal , racks and racks of ‘sleeping’ spaces , we were literally inches from the people next to us , men, women, all nationalities, it made for an interesting, sleepless night before our ascent .
I thought that sheep was a dog 🤣 great idea for a quiet sleep, ear plugs! I've got noisy cockerels and when my friend comes round to stay in his motor he uses them and says they work a treat. Even if you can't sleep for the rain or wind hitting your tent they will be great so it's well worth keeping a pair in your bag.👌❤️💛💚 have you walked anywhere on the Pennine way? It goes through my garden and if you do I will give you a cuppa or can of some sort.
I love camping the out doors cooking a fry up on the camping stove not keen on heavy rain I buy the pop up tents they can leak Derbyshire is amazing for camping

Another great video Dan. To each their own i don't smoke and i certainly don't smoke cannabis, i think its wrong they have been smoking cannabis in there, it should be totally smoke free and defo no cannabis, some people have no respect.
A mountain is minimum 1000ft above sea level.
I think Id prefer my own tent to sharing with people I didnt know, but the stove would be cosy.
Leaving a food parcel would be welcomed gesture by someone...

Picture quality in my opinion buddy is very good. As for camping, I reckon a tent is the best option but great place to stop for a brew and a warm up if needed or a place in very bad weather. A new experience pal and keep up the good work fella
Make sure if you venture further afield ie up Great Gable etc that you have a paper map and compass and know how to use them! The only way we could come down from Great Gable was by following a compass direction. Your phone won't work if it gets too cold!
My Brother used to live in Penrith, The hills are known locally as Fells, loving your channel subscribed a few days ago when I found you.
Not a chance could i even sit alongside rando's let alone sleep with them. I'd rather freeze to death 😂 The most I'd use a bothy for would be a cup of coffee and I'd be away soon as anyone else came.

I've been to the lake district years ago with a week school trip climbing mountains and going to hospital for stitches in my head as the lads at the other side of this pond were skimming stones I bent down to pick up a stone and got hit on the head so the rest of the pictures are with me with a ballaclarve on with a big bandage under it good time eh lol.
