Customer of this repair here. Ray, I just wanted to publicly thank you for all of your hard work on giving this engine new life. I was seriously considering just scrapping it and cutting my losses but couldn't find a replacement for anywhere near the repair cost. Just know your work is greatly appreciated!

I must admit I was a little concerned when I read the title of this last video. There is nothing like the trepidation that accompanies the first startup after a major repair. This was especially true with all of the gymnastics that you went through to get the job done. Sometimes it is easier to just pull the engine. Congrats on another successful repair..I really enjoyed the series. Good luck on getting your own shop, but remember; 4 o'clock is meaningless when it's your own business.

This was an excellent series! I have a 09 F150 with this engine at 135,000 miles. I have been good about oil changes and mine runs quietly and has no rattle on start up. I always wondered what I would do if it needed this repair, this may be a bit beyond what my aging body and lack of agility can take! I learned a lot watching this and that's why I am here and keep coming back.
I really don't give a rip what Car Wizard says, I believe that if you get to the repair early on you can save the engine. Even putting a new engine in is a gamble, you could drive out of the shop and blow a transmission or some other major component. It's all a calculated risk, so choose wisely.

Gary from Australia here. I own a 2005 5.4 litre BOSS 260kw quad overhead cams with 4 valves per cylinder Ford Falcon XR8. Correct we if I am wrong but my V8 is the same as fitted to some earlier Mustangs in the states. I have the chains and tensioners job myself after doing a lot of study and thank god my motor does not have cam phasers. The timing mark alignment scares a lot of people but it is not really that bad, and in regards to removing the followers I just clamped the camshafts with vice grips to stop them from moving. There are specific clamps you can buy for the job but vice grips will do it too. John Smith racing in America has a you tube channel and he gives a complete rundown on how to do the 32 valve quad cam. The BOSS 260 kw has nowhere near the issues that the 3 valve does. Car wizard hates the 3 valve and states they are one of the worst motors to own if you are not prepared to change the oil on a regular basis.

Great job! I love the fact that you don't skimp on the little things, like the drain plug that others might not replace. You briefly mentioned in passing that you probably should have pulled the engine. I wondered that as well. Would you do that if you got another one? I don't know what other issues you would run into pulling the engine. Hmm... Either way, terrific series and you may see me in the near future for a job (not so rigorous).

Squatch 253 just finished rebuilding a D2 engine and the pony motor. He has spent months on this project, finding all the correct parts, machining the bearing boss on the pony motor and a bunch of other things. Anyway, just released the video of the first start of both the pony motor and then the Diesel. Two completely overhauled engines to start at the same time. Talk about nervous. Chech his channel out.

Love your work as always Ray. This was a good series. Just a thought for consideration when you need to weld something thick like that bolt turn the amps up a bit more to get better penetration buddy, your weld appeared to break because you'd not got into the core metal enough. Keep up the awesomeness.

You need to grind each bolt to a point(ish) so that you have a valley to weld them together or you will never get enough penetration.

I’ve heard about that and there’s some truth to it. It all depends on the scoring or damage that occurs at the camshaft journals. (These engines suffer from oiling problems at the top end) Many of the rebuilders won’t touch this engine bc of high failure rates. I also wanted to replace the long block assembly but there’s always cost to consider.

it's just part of maintainence and GM;s have roller lifters that go bad and you have to remove the heads to replace the lifters. They all have there problems.

@@aleastwood1698 True. It's just the level of dismantling to get to the faulty parts in question that gets me. Maybe it's just my perception, but it's always seemed to me that I've had to take more apart on a Ford to get to something than I've had on most other cars, with the exception of a couple of Dodge small cars. Everything is just jammed together very tightly these days.

Excellent series on this one vehicle. I'm thinking about picking up a Ford raptor with the same engine with the same issues. The owner told me he was quoted anywhere from 3 to 4,000 for repairs and he just isn't interested in spending that much money into his truck. He said that's the reason he's decided to sell it.
Since I do all my own work it's only going to cost me the price of the parts and a couple special tools that I don't have. Which honestly does not bother me to buy a tool that I need. My whole garage is filled with things that I've needed.
I most definitely going to reuse Ford parts. With all the searching I have done that's the one thing that everyone agrees on to use good parts not that cheap Amazon for eBay parts.
Out of all the videos I have watched of this repair yours was best illustrated to show what you were actually doing. I've been watching your videos for a very long time. I like learning different things when it comes to repairs. I'm not a professional mechanic I'm just somebody who's not afraid to get in there and get the job done.
As always I made sure to give you a big old thumbs up and I look over to watching your next videos.

ok, here comes welding advice, i'm sure someone has mentioned it already but if you grind both bolts down like a pencil on the ends where they meet, you can fill that V with weld and get great penetration that will hold it together when you clean up the diameter. Cutting Edge Engineering in Aus does a lot of joining large shafts with a very big V for max penetration.

Just a small tip on the coolant funnel if you aren't aware squeeze the upper hose, and install the plunger, then you can remove the funnel spill free. :)
Also, OEM tools 27306 is a lifesaver of a tool for crank pulleys. Ford, GM, and Chrysler. Inexpensive, and it saves the crank threads from having stress put on them.
