    Being 70 years old and having worked on vehicles since age 16, I find it interesting to see a clean, repairable Ford engine with 200K miles. I remember the day when an engine of this age would have been on it's 2nd or 3rd overhaul.

    • @desertbob6835
      @desertbob6835 Місяць тому

      ...or, if it was a Ford flathead, they'd be on their 5th or 6th overhaul. By the time Ford finally retired the flathead, it was sadly obsolete The Y-block that replaced it was hardly much better.

      Hey, yet another old fart mech/tech...I'm 76. In my day there were difficult engines to work on, but modern engines have so many more technical/electronic things included. But the mindset remains the same. And experience pays, repeat procedures lend to knowing where fasteners go (if they are different in places). Ray is of that caliber. Amazing watching his experience showing.

    It's great to see people taking care of their vehicles. I don't think a lot of people realize that even a major repair like this is worthwhile on a vehicle that is still in good shape, because the cost of a new truck is just way too much these days.

    • @johncooper4637
      @johncooper4637 Місяць тому +5

      Amen to the cost of a new truck. I could not afford to spend over $80k on one, but I will make do with my 96 12 valve Cummins.

      @@Tread1775 I think the reason most people don’t get the smaller pickup trucks is that they don’t offer much improvement in fuel mileage over the bigger trucks. I talked to a guy who sold his Tacoma for a duramax to save money on fuel.

      @@russianrick8403 The Hardbody I had was rated at 17 mpg. The newer 2.0 & 2.5 NA engine gets better than that. In a small truck from back then with the newer 4 cyl NA would get much better mpg. I think the weight of a new small truck similar in size to old version with new engine tech, less all the unnecessary options would do well. The crazy Subaru Baja from the late 2000’s was estimated at 21-27. It can be done, but heaven forbid a manufacturer tries that with an attractive 4X4 these days. Must not be enough exorbitant profit for them. Really irritates me that I can’t get a small body on frame 4X4 with basic interior. There’s a market waiting for it. Most are tired of the prices for full and midsize trucks. ✌️

      The Ford 5.4 2 valve found on the E-250/350 vans, if maintained, is good for 350-500,000 miles once the cam chain tensioners are swapped out for the older but stronger machined steel ones. Ford went for performance on the F pickups series and developed the 3 valve head with variable valve timing based on oil pressure, then screwed the oiling up by replacing the steel cam chain tensioners with cheap plastic ones which as you see here is a major failing point.

    This truck is definitely a keeper. Seems like the repair is happening at the right time. I remember going to look at a truck with a 5.4 Triton engine in it. It was parked on a street corner with a few other cars, (Y'all know these places lol). Anyway, the owner shows up with a gallon of oil and proceeds to dump a GALLON in before hitting the key... I truly admired the owner's positive outlook when he stated it ran great. It ran OK for a five cylinder if you could get past the clunking noises from the bottom end. Bless his heart.

    I’m referring to other videos where you mention the backlash for using additives. I worked at a major motor oil company in the 90’s that somewhat condemned these additives. Those opinions stopped later when they purchased several additive companies but, I bet the influence of those claims still exists. One of their major commercials promoted 3000 miles or 3 months for oil change intervals. Additives work. I have oil fired injectors in my diesel and one was sticking. A quart of additive and 15 minutes later, it was unstuck.

    I recently did this job on my 2012 Expedition. It ran great up until the day it blew a tensioner seal at about 212k miles and I heard the cold start rattle. I drove it for about a week like that before I had a chance to gather all the parts and perform the work. Fortunately, the only damage I was able to see was a cracked guide (same one as in this video). After the work, that thing runs smoother and quieter than I think it ever had. The Melling pump is huge for these engines. The factory pump is only barely enough when the engine is brand new with tight bearings, good tensioner seals, good lifters, etc., but as soon as anything is compromised, oil flow is going to suffer to somewhere.
    The 5.4 3v gets a lot of hate, but I know very few people that have to crack them open before 200k miles if they're well-maintained. Oil changes every 5k or less is key. The people I know that have had to put a lot of work into them are the ones that go by the oil change indicator on the dash...which ends up being somewhere around 7-8000 miles. I've had several 3v go well into the 300k's before issues. The 08 and later had the updated heads, which fixed the spark plug problems, updated phasers, and a few other upgrades around the block. Those later ones seemed to make the best power and offered the best reliability.

    Nitpick because I just gotta. Those are actually lash adjusters and cam followers in this engine, Ray. :)
    And the owner should absolutely approve replacing both for the updated ones. Ya got all this far, why would you not? They oil things better. Even though this got 190K+ on it, no way I'm using them old ones.

    I had that same 90 cordless impact wrench. Sold it on eBay because it was too weak to be of much use. I have that same Ridgid impact as well. That thing is awesome!

    Had the same issue on an 08 Expedition. It’s so much easier to pull the engine and put in a rebuilt one.

    Ray, that's a lot of work, time and money going into fixing that truck, but if you ask anyone, it will last a while longer. Great job on that one.

    Replacing the chain guides and other timing stuff in a 2.2R was the first major job that I ever did.

      I noted this as well. I was cringing as he continued to feed the bolts into the balancer with the impact. That's a major no no.

      @@rossgee2950. One of the downsides of using power tools. You’d of felt it hit if you were putting them in with a socket. He’s lucky he didn’t crack it. I was yelling at the screen to stop but he just wouldn’t listen.😝

      Yup.. I was cringing when he did that hoping he wasn't going to blow a hole in that cover. It's replaceable, but why replace if you don't have to..
