I had a 3v Ford recently I did timing chains on with an after market kit. The driver side when installed the chain was way to tight I think that’s why that guide broke. I ended up putting Ford parts on and it went together perfect
Hey man, love your channel. I just did a 3 valve timing job a couple months ago and the passenger side guide had exploded. The chain had worn a 1.5 inch slot all the way thru the cover, you could literally see the chain. Oh and it was driven here. To make it even worse it came in with the complaint of an oil leak which a different shop said was the front crank seal !!! It was the chain slopping oil right out the front cover onto the balancer. Wish i could post a video .
Interesting to hear your take on the cam journals. I've done several with journals that bad or worse and never had an issue, though I was skeptical at first. Also, I check the cam crank correlation with a scope and if it's good, I reuse the OEM chains. Replace the phasers, guides, and tensioners, maybe an oil pump, and away you go!
Wes is everywhere. Really like your channel, btw. I agree with your chain test using a scope. That’s how I checked my 5.4l 3v when I did the timing job.
Seeing that you have it all off I see no reason not to just put in a new chain and oil pump. This way you don't have to do it all over again for a long time.
On my 2v 5.4 van the passenger side guide had broken apart and the chain was eating up the cover. I used a melling kit to fix it. I hope the 2v is more tolerant of the melling kit than the 3v...

I did my timing job back in October 2019 at just under 105,000 miles, using the Melling kit (which has metal chain tensioners). The timing chain in the kit looked more like the Ford OEM chain than the Dorman chain in your video (except for the odd choice of lighter colored timing links, than the usual dark color). The phasers in the kit looked like they took Ford phasers and remanned them to the updated version. I did replace the roller followers with Ford OEM (cheaper than Melling, by half), and used Engine Tech lash adjusters (the only part I went cheap with). I bought the Melling M340HV oil pump. My truck currently has under 118,000 miles. Also, I watched your videos on how to do the timing (and one from BSK garage to fill in gaps in your video), as well as downloading the Ford service manual to help with torque values and bolt sequences, among other things. The timing kit, oil pump and lash adjusters were bought from Rock Auto, the roller followers and some miscellaneous parts were bought from a Ford Dealership in Bloomington, MN in the Ford parts network.
Terrible engines compounded by the usage of even more terrible parts. Why even manufacture the parts in the first place if they’re only going to fail prematurely? Everyone knows Dorman makes nothing but trash, so why do we keep using them?
Frightening sight seeing timing chains being replaced that often. I know things don't last forever but one should get 200k miles on one with good maintenance. If they don't last that long why even bother, just put timing belts back on and make it a routine service item.
How long do expect motor to last after oil pickup was pretty much plugged up and motor had to suffer oil starvation think it is a ticking time bomb ready to go off..

The best statement I've heard regarding quality is "You can buy good quality oats for your horse, or you can get oats that have been through another horse". That goes for parts and labor!
Thank God for guys like you sir! Because there are too many crooked mechanics out there. The sad part is that if they would just be honest they would get more return customers than they could keep up with. And oem is well worth the the cost and in most cases the best option.
So in your opinion, did the aftermarket chain cause the driver's side guide to break completely off except for that bottom piece still attached? After seeing the carnage in the pan not cleaned up from the previous repair, anything goes. Job one, use genuine Ford parts.
How is it that when you get a 5.4 3v timing job the chain guides are usually present? Every one I have ever done has had at least one guide completely disintegrated, usually the passenger side and sometimes both and the chain always grinds into the front cover and sometimes the oil pump. I have never seen one where both guides were present upon disassembly. They are always found as shrapnel in the oil pan plugging the oil pump strainer.
That was pretty intense, and to think the tech who did the timing didn’t clean out the pan.....what was he thinking, sometimes i feel like these things are done deliberately.....
All that plastic doesn’t get in the bearings? I had a plastic timing gear on a 302 shell out in my 77 Bronco. Pulled the pan, cleaned everything out and replaced with a cloyes chain but eventually the engine developed a bearing failure. I attributed it to plastic inside the oil passages I couldn’t clean out but who really knows for sure if that was the cause or not.
I recently bought a 2011 E 350 van with a 5.4. should I convert it to full synthetic oil when before, it used regular oil. (It has 83k on it, & it runs fine
Not sure why a shop would randomly look under a cam cap, rather than checking for the actual problems…Like noise, oil pressure, codes, cam to crank correlation. Interesting. Ford parts being more reliable, I guess, most likely aftermarket is avoiding patent issues. They already replaced those timing parts once also? We all know the history of these engines. I’d be more inclined to think the used car lot paid a kid $12 an hour to “fix it for sale,” so it wasn’t done correctly. Guide in the oil pan, or missing all together?
Thanks for being a great resource. I hope your channel gives you great pleasure, and enough money and satisfaction to continue going forward for a long time. Oh yes! I purchased after market parts to replace the timing chain and tensioners on my 05 5.4L 3V, it made about 8000 miles before the plastic guides fell apart and ended up in the oil pan. Thanks O'Reillys!
I used a cloyes timing kit and it didn't last 2 years. tensioner gasket failed and almost ruined my engine. I did the first timing job and paid around $2,100 for the second one with MC parts and cleaning the pan which had all my broken parts of it. Of course cloyes and rock auto gave me the run around

last another 100,000 so I did the timing job and watched your 4 part series and it helped me tremendously. I also purchased the parts u suggested timing chain kit, oil pump, rocker rollers, lash adjusters, VCT solenoid, and change my oil to 5w30.Thanks for your knowledge.
About how many hours did it take to complete? I need to do this job on an 07 expedition soon
@@gjenkins1660 it took me 3 days to complete because I was watching the videos at the same time so I wouldn't mess up anything. But since I know what to expect now I probably can finish it now in 10 hrs give or take a hour. That powersteering pump is hell to take off and put back on that was my only big hurdle. I also dropped my oil pan and replaced that gasket and I replaced the gasket to the oil filter housing.
Full 5w30 synthetic is the way to go.

You are Ford Tuff! Thank's for all your sharing!
That’s how I checked my 5.4l 3v when I did the timing job.
back to work wes you're slacking again lol
Seeing that you have it all off I see no reason not to just put in a new chain and oil pump. This way you don't have to do it all over again for a long time.
I’m sending this video to my boss who thinks aftermarket is ok to use
That’s not scoring, those are factory oil grooves. 😂
I love this chanel. I fixed my current 5.4 3 valve with your videos, and I'm not afraid to buy another vehicle with this engine thanks to you.
On my 2v 5.4 van the passenger side guide had broken apart and the chain was eating up the cover. I used a melling kit to fix it. I hope the 2v is more tolerant of the melling kit than the 3v...
Wow - Great video - You really are a Tech that gives Auto Techs a good name. It's sad to see that the knowledge of some techs isn't deep enough or they just want the money - in and out as fast as they can get the job done.
I was considering buying after market chain. After watching this video it’s not worth it I’m goi g with fire parts 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love watching and learning from your videos. Excellent instructions and attention to detail.
I didn't realize the melling set was so bad, I assumed they were mid of the road but the chain twisted more than my old one... Box says made in the USA but it's all China marked. I think they'll be getting a call. 😂
You are an incredilbe resource, not just to DIYers. Your videos have made me a better tech. Is the water pump the only issue to expect on the 3.7L?
Your channel is really informative. Thanks for taking the time to post all these videos!
I love the information you put out to us viewers. I use your knowledge all the time. I'm just a home mechanic in my personal shop helping people out. But I have been turning wrenches since I was 14 so it comes naturally. Thanks for your time & helping us out.
I'm using your 4 part 4.0l timing videos to do complete timing replacement on an 06 explorer. You explained so well I bought another 03 explorer with same issue to fix and flip. Thank you and keep up the great work. I got an 5.4l to do this on also soon. Also I watched your videos for an 5.4l swap i did last winter.
Thank you for taking the time to make all of these videos. They are very informative and have saved me a ton of cash with my expedition.
I done like 80 of these engines and mr makuloco speaks the truth and in my humble opinion a very knowledgeable technician and I trust his advice concerning any ford vehicle. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 🙏
Very nice that engine should run for another 100k easy.
Your the man 👨 as always 👍👍👍👍🤝very good job sir , thank u for sharing all this content with us and have a good day and may God bless u with more tones of knowledge, then u can share more with us 😉😀
Getting ready to do this on my son's Expedition. Great information. Thanks!
Most shops just replace the engine whenever this happens. Respect to you for avoiding that. Still, those cam caps looked like trash. I’d never but these.
Good video. As always good work and good info. What do u charge for that whole deal there? I got 07 F-150 with the 5.4 also. Need to get ur special touch
It's amazing to me the engine was still running despite the phaser issue, the missing guide, and all the debris in the pan. I know these engines have their faults but I've owned several and only had timing issues start after 150k miles.
Damn I’m getting close on my 06 then. 135k miles on it
@@xtremegamer2218 last one I had issues with had 178k and didn't blow the motor. It had the diesel sound which is just like it sounds (slightly ticking or knocking) I got rid of it but later found out that's not that serious. I'd drive it till it quits then fix it
@@michaelhill6627 Mine did have a ticking sound but it was because of spark plugs. It is still completely quiet.
The cloyes chain kit used to be good but the went cheap Chinese now I dont use them. Never used a aftermarket phasor. Pricing is much better from ford now so there's no reason to go aftermarket.
Something to be said about OEM parts especially in today’s engines non OEM parts are made so shoddy these days that it’s. better to use OEM anyway.
Please help I need 2002 ford f150 xlt super crew 4.6 vin 6 windsor engine timing kit water pump oil pump timing cover gaskets valve cover gaskets plus intake gaskets please I need the right parts before I start this job
"This engine has been my whole career."
Hope it lasted you well !!
@@willhart7861 Still going strong, and at almost 138,000 miles.
@@charlesball6519 that's great news. I'm planning on using a Melling kit very soon for mine as well. I hope I have the same results as you!
Terrible engines compounded by the usage of even more terrible parts. Why even manufacture the parts in the first place if they’re only going to fail prematurely? Everyone knows Dorman makes nothing but trash, so why do we keep using them?
Love your videos and thoroughness. 😎
FordTechMakuloco, please recommend similar setup for 2012 F150 3.5L Ecoboost, both OEM and aftermarket
Frightening sight seeing timing chains being replaced that often. I know things don't last forever but one should get 200k miles on one with good maintenance. If they don't last that long why even bother, just put timing belts back on and make it a routine service item.
Could you make a video of a timing job in a coyote 5.0?
Just can't find any good honest mechanic like you anymore they all cut corners and over charge you for💩work.
How long do expect motor to last after oil pickup was pretty much plugged up and motor had to suffer oil starvation think it is a ticking time bomb ready to go off..
So I should steer clear of any Ford 5.4 3v, got it.
Really need some help.
Down here in Miami Florida, not able to travel for your timing job on 07 expedition EL.
My tensioner are starting to make noise for first 3 seconds of start.
Would appreciate advice on a shop you recommend that might give me a fair price with a makuloco style professional Job. No aftermarket, complete clean properly torqued timing time.
Mr. FordTechmakuLoco
Can you please forward a list or point me in direction of where to get information of things you suggest must be cleaned, inspected, replaced on a timing job. For 5.4 3 valve 2007 expedition EL.
This will assist me in negotiating with mechanic in South Florida area.
For expectations on properly done timing job and pricing
Man I need you to look at my 5.4 f350.
I’m not a Ford fan but if I owned one, I’d take it to this man for any major repairs and maintenance.
The best statement I've heard regarding quality is "You can buy good quality oats for your horse, or you can get oats that have been through another horse". That goes for parts and labor!
Another awesome video thanks for sharing buddy thanks so much have a great day
Thank God for guys like you sir!
After seeing the carnage
in the pan not cleaned up from the previous repair, anything goes.
I've noticed most of these 3v videos are 5.4's. Never really seen any of the 3v 4.6 in the s197 platform. Why the difference between the two?
There weren't as many of them sold, and they typically didn't go into abused work trucks.
I dont own any ford vehicles now but man even so I Love your channel
That was pretty intense, and to think the tech who did the timing didn’t clean out the pan.....what was he thinking, sometimes i feel like these things are done deliberately.....
I get that there are cam phaser lockout kits, but why isn't there just a kit that deletes them altogether? Like a 2V style sprocket with no phasers?
All that plastic doesn’t get in the bearings? I had a plastic timing gear on a 302 shell out in my 77 Bronco. Pulled the pan, cleaned everything out and replaced with a cloyes chain but eventually the engine developed a bearing failure. I attributed it to plastic inside the oil passages I couldn’t clean out but who really knows for sure if that was the cause or not.
Nope it falls directly into the pan and settles in the sump.
I tied up my dog with a Cloyes chain. He broke loose in 20k miles
I did myself a favor and sold my 5.4 but I can’t stop watching 5.4 destruction
Another 5.4 3 valve death,, made quicker by after market POS parts.
What about Ford Racing timing components and tensioners for 3v engines?
What would a project like this cost? Approximately
I recently bought a 2011 E 350 van with a 5.4. should I convert it to full synthetic oil when before, it used regular oil. (It has 83k on it, & it runs fine
Just looking at that chain as a total amateur if someone was putting that on my car in a shop I would stop them. It doesn't even LOOK right.
You know it's bad, but good too when a singular engine is what feeds this mans and his family 🤣
The Ford kit is a lot, but those cheap-o parts kits will cost you more in headaches.
Thanks!
Biggest tip? Vice grip on the lift strut. Thanks 😁
Great stuff as usual.
Thanks for being a great resource. I hope your channel gives you great pleasure, and enough money and satisfaction to continue going forward for a long time. My experience as a consumer in the in the last 25 years is that there are way too few honest and knowledgeable auto repair dealers and shops. But you are a shining light that gives me hope.
Great video! Is there someplace that I can post a question about a Ford vehicle?
I have a 2011 F250 6.7L with some ongoing AC issues.
followed your early 4 part timing job vids...except for slight oil leak (thought i got all the torques right) engine runs great...THANKS!
I follow you all the time and installed new engine in my 2004 f150 180,000 mi on the mark got the motor the same place as you did yours. I'm hoping the new one will last over 180,000 MI. Last one was kind of my fault not taking care of it not enough oil changes using regular oil just neglect but I love the truck and I can't afford a new one but I love your shows thanks
Please please help After replacing both cam position sensors, genuine ford phaser on driver side, both genuine VCT solenoids, crank sensor, disconnected the alternator, all ignition coils replaced and spark plugs, my ford F-150 2005 5.4 3V is still getting codes P0345 and P0349. What could it be? When I opened bank 2 to replace the phaser, everything looked ok with tension on the chain, also I made sure like you said the fingers on the phaser were straight and not bent back. What could it be?
Why did you install a high volume oil pump? One would think that a stock pump on a stock engine would be fine.
Lol, please read up on this engine.
