  • I finally got my Majohn A3 and I compare it to the A2 A3 and Pilot Vanishing Point. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

    Do I already have plenty of retractable fountain pens? Yes. Am I still going to get one of these because I want one of each kind? Also yes! Lol. As far as the Majohn retractables, the only ones that have disappointed me have been the A2s. All of my A1s have been excellent (but I do prefer EF/F nibs) I also have a Pilot VP & a Decimo which are, of course, wonderful. I primarily use my retractables for work & have them in different colors with corresponding matching inks that I use for tracking information for different departments, so unfortunately I can't afford to have that many authentic Pilot Vanishing points, but considering their utilitarian purpose it really doesn't matter. Also gotta say, Doug, your intros are the BEST!

    Fun! I have the A1 Fish Scale, with a nib that did perfectly well for an EF; but I took the nib from my '80s Namiki vanishing point -- 14K? -- and love it. The Namiki polyhedron plastic was innovative, but never elicited my enthusiasm. This retractable nib pen now is a regular edc for my work. The Pilot nib lays down such a nicely varying width line -- and I like the click noise. I may say that a friend in my department to whom I gave another A1 has had no complaint about his nib. Cheers!

    I am very thrilled with my pilot vanishing point special alloy version. Which I think it’s just another word for steel. It works great and I got it for $90 on PenSachi. If they make or sell a special alloy version of the LS model that would be phenomenal. This steel nib is very smooth and feels great.

    Doug, this video was sublime! Thoroughly enjoyed it, laughed my @$$ off. I’ve purchased 4 or 5 Majohn A1’s (kept three) and recently got the A3. I’m going to grind it to a 0.9mm stub. If it leaks or continues with the suckage, I’ll replace it with a Pilot nib unit.

    Great review as always 😊 So interesting to see what Chinese companies are capable of these days… too bad, that I‘m not a huge fan of the vanishing point to begin with 😂 Tried it, but doesn‘t work for me. The E95S, however, is one of my most favorite pens, although I‘m generally not into pocket pens.

    I didn't realize the A3 was another clone. I also didn't realize Pilot made such a hideous pen. It's too bad as it would likely be much more comfortable for my large hands, but the looks and my left handedness mean I'm keeping away. Glad you have found it to work for you.

    The intro is a blast. It made me lol roflmao.
    Though I like very much many of the different Majohn/Moonmoon FP series, but the A1/A2 doesn't belong to them.
    Even though that my A1 behaves now well by changing the converter to an original Pilot Con-40 I'm not touching it anymore Instead I'm using a Pilot VP which I bought from a japaenese online seller right after the inkspilling experiences with the A1.
    So I skipped the plastic made A2 and most probably will skip the A3 as well, due to these horrible chinese EF-steeel nibs.
    Your idea to buy and use a decent Pilot nib with the A3 is great, however I don't understand Majohns product and sales policies in terms of only offering scratchy EF steel nibs.
    Maybe they are overstocked with them. Once they start to offer decent western M nibs for the A3 the story might change. Because the FP itself looks very attractive to me and the mechanism seems to be sturdy.

    My interest for the capless design is just zero. It seems too much ballpoint experience. But... If I had a job walking around with a check list on a clipboard, like an officer in the navy, there I would buy one! Thought I might, applied to the reserve, no luck with medical. No capless pen necessary then!

    I have a blue Majohn A1 that I've had for about a year now. Just this week I discovered two small nicks in the clear coat of this pen. Very disappointed as I baby my pens and have no idea how this happened. I agree that the EF nibs are terrible.

    Have you ever heard of Fountain Pen Revolution? I ordered some inexpensive pens from them. One I really like is an enameled metal pen with a snap cap. It's got a flex nib with their initials on it. Seems I got some resin pens from them, too. They offer a lot of flex and ultra flex nibs.

    Doug, your dislike of the Majohn nibs is now VERY well documented. Your comparison lacked one thing: your wife's Decimo is the very slender version of Pilot's regular VP pens, and you didn't stop to compare it to the larger girth A3. How would you compare the A3 to the standard VP?

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  5 місяців тому +1

      The Decimo is even more slender than the A1 and the VP, so it is substantially thinner than the A3.

    • @johnhubbard8058
      @johnhubbard8058 5 місяців тому +1

      . @InkquiringMinds I didn't ask my question very well...the standard Pilot VP has a larger girth than the Decimo. You clearly like the girth of the A3, so how does the feel of the A3 compare to the slightly slimmer VP. I know that the clip of the VP can bother some people, so feel free to comment on the overall feel of the A3 to that of the Pilot VP

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  5 місяців тому +1

      I don't have a Pilot VP to compare. The A1 is close in dimensions, so I prefer the A3. I think I prefer the A3 to the Pilot LS, even though I've never tried one, because I like the open feel of the front of the A3 to the LS with the clip there.
