Good video on the 10 speed. Especially the comments about being the the 'right gear' all the time. My current truck is a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500. 5.3L/6 speed. I'll be upgrading to a heavier duty truck within the next couple of years, so thanks for the info. On a side note, I bought a new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. It had the 5.7L/5 speed. It was a good driving vehicle. In 2014, I traded for a Grand Cherokee Summit, 5.7L/ 8 speed. Big difference in diveability. The 8 speed shifted smoothly, almost un-noticed. In addition, it gave the driving impression that the vehicle was 'always in the right gear'. Bought a 2017 with similar specs, then a 2020 similar specs. All have/are good vehicles.
Regarding those Jeeps (Dodge Durango and 1500 Ram PU share the same powertrain)... The 8-speed was designed by German company ZF, and built by them or in a JV with what was Chrysler's transmission manufacturing operations. It is a newer and much better trans than the 5-speed which was the last home-grown Chrysler AT.
@hackfabrication139 The 8 speed that Ram uses in thise trucks is a ZF from Germany. It is used in a vast number of vehicles in its carrying capability builds. In a BMW with a turbo 4 it is an astounding combination. It feels like a probe has been planted in your brain ir some other spot so it knows exactly what you want and need. Probably the best I've driver in 60 years.
the F&F reference was GOLD! My real question is, Does a large displacement diesel NEED 10 speeds? or could OEM simply build stronger 6 speeds considering the power curve of modern VGT diesels.
In today's Era with the EPA the 10 speeds makes the engine run more in its powerband, imo if you get a larger turbocharger and let the truck Rev a little bit higher, you get a lot more efficiency out of the turbo making the 10 speed just another thing to shift longer
@@beowulf885 Every generation of DMax since the LLY has received a smaller turbo. The trend (in this segment anyway) is to lower peak torque and take advantage of the narrower operating range with more gears.
I drive multiple 20, 21 and 22 Chevy pickups that pull massive loads with this ten speed. Seen tranny go out at 103k, 134k and when they did, they gave no warning signs at all. Basically they just had nothing left to hold on to get power to the ground yet. I hate how putting into manual shift mode it just automatically downshifts when I just want to be ready to before I'm actually headed down 8 percent grade loaded. Nothing more fun than trying to get it to upshift while at 3500+ rpm so you don't smoke something cuz it's really not meant that high.
The Freightliner semi I drive has an autoshift 12- gear trans. It is not a true automatic trans. with a torque converter, it's a manual with automated clutch actuation and gear selection. I have to admit I love this thing. I can select what gear I want to start off in. If I'm heavy it'll be 1st . If I'm light it'll probably be third. After a few miles the transmission will "learn" how heavy you really are. It will skipshift on it's own. It'll shift from 1st to 4th and then to 7th if you are light enough or if you are going down a grade. I think it has a gyroscope on it that knows the angle you're on. It does get confused on occasion and shifts before you would like but you can quickly flip the lever down and shift it. The fuel mileage is actually better than you would manage shifting it manually. I have driven them all. 9,10,11,13,18 speeds you name it. The 13 speed manual is the favorite of most semi drivers.
Bought a GMC 6.6 gas w/ the proven 6 speed trans after being a lifelong Ford guy solely because of all the negative feedback on the 10 speed reliability and excessive shifting. Awesome concept just thought I’d give them a few more years to work bugs out. I’m sure my next truck a 10 speed will be the only choice.
Company I work for leased a '22 250 with the 6.7ps... I really enjoyed it over the 350 dually 6.0 I'm usually towing with. The added power was nice, but it was more the way the tranny shifted which I liked most. That thing was smooth, whether it was skip shifting or going thru every gear.
1:20 the issue id see with having 10 gears is when it shifts to the next gear at redline you're probably way past your hp and tq peaks and would actually be slower for something like timed acceleration runs. I do notice the new work truck with a 10 speed skips a couple gears when at light throttle though.
Torque and HP cross at 5250rpm on all levels, with at 5250 rpm the HP goes up, and Torque goes down. With more gears, the RPM when shifting into the next gear, will stay closer to that 5250 (thus producing more HP on a more regular level). Take a 6 speed… when going from 3-4, the RPM may drop to 3700, but on the 10 speed, it may only drop to 4800 RPM, closer to that 5250, thus being faster. Only downfall, is that if the 10 speed has sloppy slow shifts, it may take .3 seconds away every time it shifts. The 10 speed is great IMHO.
Already had to put a new transmission on mine 😢 are yall planning on building these i also put a stealth str when i put the new trans on so lets see if itll hold up
Big diesel engines make lots of torque, but have limited rpm. That said, the majority of "real world" driving is done between 30 to 70 mph. In many ways, the more gears, the better (from a performance point of view). However, the biggest priority for a transmission in a heavy duty truck application is longevity. The real question is, will these 10 speed boxes hold up for hundreds of thousands of miles (and millions of shift cycles)?
And just wait until the truck owner has to pay for a 10 speed trans rebuild !! ! He will have to float a loan to pay for, part of the reason these truks are approaching 100 grand to buy !!!
@@jumanji6969 they are known failure. GM even puts a 3yr Unlimited Mileage warranty on them now if you buy the AC Delco one from dealer and have them install it.
I know if I forget to press my towing button when pulling my backhoe, if I'm on the slightest of incline, it'll tell me real quick that it's not in a low enough gear by lack of torque to the ground. Not a big deal, just press the tow button and it drops down where it's supposed to be. But on the top end, when I get up to my personal tow speed of around 65, it constantly shifts down and up. Unless I press the button. Then it stays in the lower gear, but always sounds like it wants to shift, but never does. I know, drive slower or faster. Yes, that does fix it, but that much weight gets squirrly going faster, and slower just pisses everyone else off. Lol. My only real issue is that damn chevy shimmy, when you shift from reverse to drive, and it acts like it's having a damn orgasm briefly. No mechanic has ever been able to figure that one out, as far as I know. My 07 and my 2015 both do it. Both duromax 6.6, 3500 gmc.
FYI. I have a 2021 3500. When in drive it starts out in 2nd gear, but in tow/haul it then starts out in 1st. 23mph empty / 13 towing. Love it all day long.
New Ram HD's still have 6-speed trannys. So what's the real reason your keeping your 05 Ram 2500? New trucks too damn expensive, don't want stupid high payments, your truck still does what you need it to......
It's not really a GM transmission either. It's based on the 6R140 which was a collaboration between Ford and ZF, slightly modified and tuned by GM with validation testing done by Allison. GM got the rights to use the design by trading Ford the rights to use their transverse 9 speed.
I tow a large heavy (for an RV) 5th wheel with my new Ram, the Asin 6 speed with the HO Cummins works fine in my opinion. I also think it's heavier duty than the GM and Ford 10 speeds. I'm sure the 10 speeds are okay, but I sure don't worry that I don't have one.
Hey Nick, really appreciate your knowledge on the 10 speed. Have you seen any real problems with a stock tuned 10 speed? Any real design problems to worry about in all stock form? Thanks!
Bought a 2024 6.6 gas with the 10 speed. Truck pulls the camper I have surprisingly well coming out of a 19 duramax. Question about the shifting, mine seems to want to hold first excessively long, in my opinion. If I’m just feathering the gas pedal, I usually like my shift points right around 2k rpm’s when not towing, it seems like 1st wants to rev up to 2500-3k rpm before shifting and it feels delayed compared to the rest of the gears. Noticeably not as smooth…. Other times it does shift right around 2k from first to second but it’s almost always if I back off the throttle a little bit. Thought it was the tranny learning my driving habits but I have 1200 miles on it now and had 16 miles on it when I got it so figured we should be dialed in by now. That being said, while towing my 11k lb camper it is smooth shifting regardless. Only when I’m not putting a load on it does the issue happen. Anything come to mind or is this pretty normal behavior for this trans? Thanks for the video!!!!

I've been without my 2021 Sierra Duramax/Allison for 3 1/2 months now due to a mysterious transmission issue between gears 2 and 3. They've done everything from a new valve body to replacing multiple wiring harnesses, to rebuilding the transmission. Two days ago they had a GM Engineer there to help diagnose it. If anyone has had a similar issue, please advise.
@davefrattaroli5804 Thanks for sharing! We have not personally seen anything like this. If anyone has any information we would love to hear it as well.
@@Duramaxtuner two weeks later and still without my truck. Most recently they changed the speed sensors and the transmission control module. Both repairs didn't resolve the issue. GM offered me a $3,500.00 voucher towards a new truck. $3,500 for a $90,000 truck, how generous.
@@Duramaxtuner Got my truck back! GM finally consulted with Allison. Turns out it was a faulty transmission pump. I've had it for about a week and a half with no issues.
Nice video man. I understand the reason for a 10 speed transmission but I’d bet it’s close to $10k to rebuild or replace one of these transmissions. I’ll stick with the MOPAR 727 and GM 4L80E. Just my opinion
Could you please tear down a 10 speed and compare the internal parts to the old 6 speed. Like the pump the shafts the steels . I’m tired of people say it ain’t an Allison it just has their name on it. I want to see side by side comparisons of the internals .
Even if they tear it down and the internals are on par with the Allison, it still won't be an Allison trans. That will never change. I'm fairly certain that won't be the case, though. These 10 speeds don't seem to live very long lives. For people who trade their truck in every 3 years it won't be an issue, though.
@danielsweeney-me7wm That's not something that we've really tested. Wouldn't the advantage solely be eliminating DFM? Or are you asking if there's a benefit to eliminating DFM in general?
@@Duramaxtuner Thanks for the reply. That is the advantage for sure. is there anyway to do harm by staying in L9 that you know of? Thanks again for your time
Drive an 2021 F450 all day every for work... tow trucks. I hate the ten speed in our Fords. My biggest beef is the delayed reaction off start... If I need to, say, make a right turn on a red into fast moving traffic... jump into a hole and go... it won't allow it. There's almost a two second delay from the time I hit the gas to the time it's moving, ridiculous in my opinion... traffic moves a long way in two seconds. The other beef is that we have had several fail already, at 10k a piece.
That sounds just like the 2007 Silverado 2500HD with a 6.0 Vortec that I had as a brand new company truck. That 2 or 3 second hesitation when pulling out into traffic was deeply concerning to me.
Will be in the shop as much as on the road. My 2001 2500 HD Silverado 4x4 has NEVER been in the shop for any repairs. Only tires and batteries. I’m currently doing the brakes and belts and hoses which are original but I plan on hauling my truck camper to Utah in the fall (from Louisiana). The best vehicle I have ever owned. Only used for hauling a 13000 lb boat and camper, so 120K HARD miles!
Thanks Nick for your description and video. My take on this is that if I leave my truck alone, bone stock, and use it to tow our RV (12.000 pound fifth wheel) then nothing is needed (no aftermarket parts). I don't care about how fast the truck is, it has plenty of power for what I do with it. Is this correct? Thank you!
Ours has been put through the gauntlet over almost four years and doing fine. Tons of customers report the same. Online all you'll hear is negative chatter.
2020 gmc 3500 drw welding rig. I carry about 2500lbs all the time. I'd love to put a mild tune on this truck, but I'm afraid that the 10 speed trans would give up. What's your thoughts?
We make sure our tuning is safe for stock transmissions and now with the ability to tune the TCM it offers even better driveability coupled with stock reliability.
I have a 2020 GMC Canyon with a transmission that hasn’t run wright since I got it. The truck shutters and feels like I’m pulling a trailer, currently it’s been in the dealers shop for a week. I consider there new transmission as garbage and luckily it’s under warranty . It will sit in there shop until it’s fixed and when I get it back I’m heading right to the Toyota dealer and never looking back.
Another positive attribute that was not mentioned is that the converter can stay locked up through most gears because rev drop in minimal with 10 ratios.
As a truck driver it's about time more gears works your enguine less especially on the hills, what I would like to see is a pickup with a 10 speed manual transmission in high-school I had a gmc dump truck with a 5 and 2 it would be nice in a pickup
If your going to have a 10 speed transmission, I’d just make it a manual. Shift it however you want depending on the road and the load. Better yet make it a 13 speed. Never did like the 10s.
@billmoran3812 I liked a 13 better but driving for Walmart my last truck was a cascadia 465 cummins with a 10 speed and the 9.1 mpg I averaged for the year to me was pretty impresive considering the last truck before it averaged only 6.9 mpgs
I’m used to the four speed transmissions, dislike the six speeds I currently have. With more frequency of shifting, will transmissions live a shorter life?
I wouldn’t buy this truck to run it down a track… I’d do exactly what it was designed for… tow with it. I appreciate this transmission and the design behind it. It’s a beautiful thing. If I wanted to race, hands down I’d go RAM TRX all day.
I just got a 22 Sierra with the 10 speed and I deliver a lot of campers with it. Coming from a half ton with a 4L60 this truck is a dream and a half. That being said, I definitely want to tune it.
Yes, because what's towed and hauled is done in the bed or off the tow hitch and never in the front of the truck. My gooseneck trailer and utility trailer attach behind my truck. I use a Ram and a Duramax with no issues.
I know this train has already left the station but a manual transmission was always in the gear the operator chose, and if that meant skip shifts so be it. I'd only add that, yes, I didin fact drive manual transmissions when they were available even though I had to wait months and jump through all sorts of hoops to get them.
Absolutely! Only 2 reasons I don't buy trucks newer than 2007, emissions and manual transmission options. I get that most people these days want automatics, but there are enough people that would buy a manual transmission if available.
Just asking to know... the new 10 speed transmission in HD trucks, the shift selection mechanism is it electronic or mechanical shift. Just asking because a friend of mine keep telling me the GM still use mechanical shift mechanism in all HD trucks and I keep telling him that last mechanical selection transmission made for the HD was like back in 2003. Any idea?
GM Stopped offering manual transmissions in Duramax trucks in 2006. All Automatic transmissions produced since have electronic gear selection. Thanks for the question!
Yes. Just try and get one. Mine left the chat at 24K miles on a 23 3500 HD. Maybe 90 days to get one. I had to go after market as I need the truck now. $4700 out of pocket to get back on the road

Allison in a express van? If it's a D Max I believe it is a 480. My son has one great van has close to 400 k miles. I have 6 speed in my work van with gas engine
AMEN...guess it makes too much sense and not enough money for the shops. I've watch trucks become "yuppy toys" over the last 30 years. Too much fluff and not dependable work tools any more. I get unsolicited offers on my 2001 2500HD 4x4 on a monthly basis. It's far too valuable to me and works very hard (without pampering) for me to ever consider parting with it.
I would buy the 10 speed for towing....not drag racing. Smooth transitions both up and down shifting with the factory engineering setup on the 3500HD Duramax. Great reveiw.
I get what ya saying, but when I drove a f150 lariat 10 speed I felt the truck couldn’t make its mind up what gear to be in. I have the 6 speed which feels ok. We’ll see if they get better.
I have the 10spd in my 2020 6.2 1500 Sierra. My brother has the 8spd in his 2018 6.2 GMC Sierra. Same engine specs, same overall truck specs, almost identical weights, but mine having the 10 speed from a dig will be a full truck ahead of his to 60. From a 60-110 roll I’ll be ahead by 3 truck lengths. The tighter gearing, as fast as it shifts, and as quick as it revs is definitely all a plus over the lesser gears. Also, the Fords with a 10spd a game changers. Before they were ok. Now they are nasty as hell. A boosted F150 8 spd bs a boosted F150 10spd, worlds different.

Ive got the 2014 1500 5.3 4x4.
Does your transmission ever shift really really hard at low speeds? Like its goin to drop out
Regarding those Jeeps (Dodge Durango and 1500 Ram PU share the same powertrain)...
@@nickpriegnitz5895so essentially more mid range power because its always in mid range and sacrificing the high end?
I drive multiple 20, 21 and 22 Chevy pickups that pull massive loads with this ten speed. Seen tranny go out at 103k, 134k and when they did, they gave no warning signs at all. Basically they just had nothing left to hold on to get power to the ground yet. I hate how putting into manual shift mode it just automatically downshifts when I just want to be ready to before I'm actually headed down 8 percent grade loaded. Nothing more fun than trying to get it to upshift while at 3500+ rpm so you don't smoke something cuz it's really not meant that high.
it's good for 5,000 fuel off. its actually designed to do just that.
@rygi23 That's a good way to go about it. We can't wait to see how the manufactures choose to improve them from here.
Had a 22 f250 with the 10spd and 430 gears, Hated it. Back to a 17 with the 6spd and love it. Such an awesome transmission.
Didnt ford and GM have alot of probelms with the10 speeds ???
Ford has been building pretty indestructible 6 speeds since the mid 2000s. I've replaced 4 engines in different F250s and not one trans in 19 years
I have a 2021 Ranger I love it day to day and towing!
They don't build these trucks for timed acceleration runs tho...
@@sepg5084 Good Point. Lol.

Nice!
I appreciate the 10 speed transmission education. I hate the 10spd driver experience. This is why I am keeping my 05 Ram 2500.
New Ram HD's still have 6-speed trannys. So what's the real reason your keeping your 05 Ram 2500? New trucks too damn expensive, don't want stupid high payments, your truck still does what you need it to......
Agreed especially without skip shifting
GM's 10 speed isn't an Allison, it's an in house GM transmission rebadged as an Allison.
with an Allison "blessing"--Allison is a publicly stock traded company.
It's not really a GM transmission either. It's based on the 6R140 which was a collaboration between Ford and ZF, slightly modified and tuned by GM with validation testing done by Allison. GM got the rights to use the design by trading Ford the rights to use their transverse 9 speed.

Could you program skip shifts in the TCM tuning? Could be an interesting offering based on engine load or something.

@@Duramaxtuner In stock form, during shift, does the converter stay locked in either tow haul or normal mode?

My take on this is that if I leave my truck alone, bone stock, and use it to tow our RV (12.000 pound fifth wheel) then nothing is needed (no aftermarket parts). I don't care about how fast the truck is, it has plenty of power for what I do with it. Is this correct? Thank you!

I get what ya saying, but when I drove a f150 lariat 10 speed I felt the truck couldn’t make its mind up what gear to be in. I have the 6 speed which feels ok. We’ll see if they get better.
