    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
As Imhotep (Boris Karloff) nearly sacrifices Anck-es-en-Amon (Zita Johann), she prays to the god Isis to save her.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Brought back to life after nearly 3,700 years, Egyptian high priest Imhotep wreaks havoc upon the members of the British field exposition that disturbed his tomb (shades of the King Tut curse). While disguised as a contemporary Egyptologist, he falls in love with Zita Johann, whom he recognizes as the latest incarnation of a priestess who died nearly 40 centures earlier. Spiriting Zita away to the tomb, he relates the story of how he had dared to enter her ancestor's sacred burial crypt, hoping to restore her to life. Caught in the act, he was embalmed alive and his tongue was cut out for his act of sacrilege. Now that he has returned, he intends to slay Zita, so that they will be reunited for all time in the Hereafter. Despite its melodramatic trappings, The Mummy is essentially a love story, poetically related by ace cinematographer and first-time director Karl Freund. Jack Pierce's justly celebrated makeup skills offers us two Karloffs: the wizened Egyptologist and the flaking, rotting mummy, who though only seen for a few seconds remains in the memory long after the film's final image has faded.

Wow. The way Imhotep disintegrates into sand until his bones snap, no CGI which is cool! 2:01-2:13

If you think about it, Imhotep was acting more posessively than romantically.
See, even back then, movies could point out how not to have a relationship.

A good thing she prayed to Isis for help and forgiveness! Never a wise idea to trust a walking mummy disguised as a mortal when he says "only a moment of agony for an eternity of love."

Isis, goddess of life and love, destroys the tragic mummy. Poor Imhotep. Understandable that he wanted a lost, passionate love, but the past is dead, and one must ultimately let go, move on, and live in the present

This is just my opinion, mind you. But I really don't understand why the Tom Cruise mummy flick gets so much hate. It isn't a remake. It is its own movie with its own (and new) story line, characters, etc.
That being said, here's a little fun fact: The 2017 "The Mummy" was originally going to be another sequel in the Brendan Fraser franchise, with the O'Connell's in Latin America battling an Aztec mummy (whom was going to be portrayed by Antonio Banderas).

Well, the ‘99 Mummy has a cameo from Anubis when they kill Imhotep: he’s driving the chariot that takes Imhotep’s soul to the underworld.
And the Tom Cruise one, too: Ahmanet is literally trying to give Set (Sutekh) a physical form. Not that you care for that “movie” lol

Screw the 1999 Imhotep. Karloff is far more haunting and scary with his performance. The 1999 version was mostly just a cartoon.

Both films were made with different tones in mind, so I wouldn't discredit the 1999 film too quickly.
The 1932 film was supposed to be suspenseful and the cinematography shows this: extreme contrasts, moody lighting, the music, the writing all emphasizes the tension in the film, not knowing whether Helen is gonna get wooed and sacrificed or not.
The 1999 film has more of a grand adventure feel to it, but does not shy away from it's more horror-oriented roots. The brighter colors, the soundtrack, the set-piece battles and the writing gives it a more lighthearted mood while retaining some of it's predecessor's more bone-chilling moments in it's story.
Honestly whichever one you like depends on your preference, as both do radically different things, but different don't always mean better or worse.

I agree that Boris Karloff's mummy is a lot more serious and menacing than Arnold Vosloo's, but I have to say that this movie didn't scare me at all since its pace is a bit slow and its visuals and effects are almost a century old at this point, while the 1999 version, despite being more cartoony and adventurous like you said, also terrified the hell out of me when I saw it because of how horrifically on-point its effects and story were and how alarmingly fast-paced it was. This movie went for tragedy/suspense more (which worked better for early Hollywood horror films), while the 1999 one went for pure horror and stomach-churning effects (like Sleepy Hollow) and in my opinion did a damn good job of it.

Obviously it couldn't, in this version he's sort of regenerated into an old looking man..
The same principle though goes for a possesed doll or something. Movement requires muscle, speech requires a brain and soft tissues like the tounge.
In this though its a supernatural horror movie so normal laws don't apply.
