The crowd think the punch line is the Bill Murray leaving line but if you know Norm you know there is another five and a half minutes of rambling left. Guy is a genius
Billy Murray left SNL in 1980. Why would a terminally ill child in the mid 90s (when Norm was on the show) know anything about SNL in 1980? That's the joke.

@@paulblickenstaff9737 I've done stand up. It is not easy to get a captive audience. It's a lot of trust building and he's done it not just on stage but over his career. I'm just saying it's a different craft. The large majority of comedy is set up punchline in about 30 seconds. Norm can do it over the course of 30 minutes. Try telling one singlular story without branching out and keeping people interested for more than 5 minutes. Usually it is meandering and they probably will lose interest. That's why comedies build/ force in jokes or tangents. Does that make sense or did I meander too much 😆

The thing that rattled so many people in entertainment about Norm was that Norm was the exact same guy both on and off camera and in public and private. He knew exactly who he was and didn't need to pretend to be someone else.
I challenge any comedian to tell a story about clubbing seals and get that many laughs. Norm is one of a kind, could use any subject and make it funny.
His stories are deep. He really is a genuine artist, you have to look past the crowd, past the laughter and the joke. To it's meaning is Norms real intent and this is where he is a genuine Artist in comedy. Then deeper than that. "Then I looked to the clouds, and saw only clouds." - How the story really ends.

He's the only late night host that would these days, especially for Norm. Craig Ferguson was even better for this kind of subversive storytelling, it was his favorite style. I think he was the best late night host ever, but Carson, Letterman, and Conan all rank in the all time greats personally.
