My mother made this every Easter and I love it so much it is my favorite. She would also make the best wheat pies. She was a phenomenal cook and baker. Her and my aunt her sister would stay in the kitchen all night before a Holiday cooking up a storm. The baking started at least a few days or a week before. Love your Nonna she is adorable.

When I was a child (50 years ago) my neighbors used to give us some of their Easter pie as my mother did not make it. I always loved it so much, along with their stuffed squid and spaghetti they would share. Unfortunately I was in hospital for kidney stone this past Sat-Sun, but did get home in time to make the ham dinner yesterday evening. They had to wait, but it was good! . Today I am making this wonderful dish. It is in the oven now - late is better than never. Your Nonna is adorable and the two of you make a nice team. Keep up the good work Rossella!

This brought back so many memories of my Italian Mama. Every Easter we would cut up all the meats and make this. My Mother in law was the greatest cook and taught me all her Italian recipes.❤️Miss my Mama.

She really reminds me of my own grandma, who (very generously) gave me her own recipe before her passing. She made it for really any special occasion, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and visits from her grandkids. My dad gets very sentimental whenever I make it for him. (Incidentally, it's always been "pizzagan" in my family.)
Thank you for sharing this - her recipe is slowly evolving into my own, and I love seeing how other people do it.

This brings back so many memories of growing up surrounded by my Italian family. So many are gone now and my children are grown, but I am making this recipe this Easter!! Yum!! Thank you for this delicious recipe! I agree that your Nonna should have more speaking time. She seems so sweet, but we don't get to hear her very much. You do a very nice job explaining everything.

It makes me sad to think these traditions are dying...I haven't had a pie like this on Easter for many years. My grandmother used to make the best one, and she used to let me help decorate the top of the pie crust. So many good memories.

Always a tradition. Now that my parents are gone, my Nana and all aunts and uncles, it's very sad - my sisters don't seem to want it. 😢 Meanwhile I miss it. I learned how to make it in the 70s from my mom and can whip it up easily. I've even cut some of the fat from it over the years. I add a little cooked sausage to it as well. I'm going to make it for MYSELF and freeze pieces of it. What I love in yr version is that the dough is same kind...a thick, heavy egg dough that stands up to that amazing, heavy filling. The egg/lard (I use butter) dough is a MUST. Thank you for making me think of my family and Easter so fondly. My sister is making Easter dinner today. It will certainly be and Italian meal; but no Pizzagain or pizzarustica. I even offered to make it. ❤

Don't be a putz. She's making sure all those Nonna recipes get out there rather than getting lost to the world. And, if you watched this much, you'd know she has lots of different Nonne on, and each one gets to tell their story. And if they want to talk, they get to talk. She's under time constraints on these videos, for one thing, and has to keep things moving along and, for another, not everyone likes to talk a lot. So, just enjoy the recipes and don't be such a hater.

I was thinking about the fact that you american people call it pizzagaina, while in Italian dialects it’s written “pizza chiena-pizza piena”. And then I realized that there’s a very simple reason for that... I thought of all the people that first came from Italy, and how poor and (some) young and uneducated they were, that they didn’t bring written recipes or the exact names of things, but they just brought their love of home and their original cuisines. So names like pasta fazool and pizza gaina sound like that just because they actually sounded like it to english speakers or the second generation italian americans that later wrote all those recipes to save tradition ❤️

My mother did the same, and she never used mortadella - she used the dried italian sausage, salami and prosciutto, from memory she also used a lot more cheese and more eggs in it too. But I guess they all have their various ways of making it, but I loved hers because it was really cheesy and the italian sausage takes it to another level in my opinion.
