Dan is the best. We are neighbors and I have definitely spent more than my fair share of time chatting him up. The kind of neighbor everyone wishes they had 😁
GIRL!! WHAT?? HOW?? OMGOODNESS!! How absolutely gorgeous 🤩🤩🤩 DAN, YOU’RE THE MAN!! 10 yrs old - AMAZING!! I will rewatch this a number of times 😁 THANK YOU CLAUDIA for sharing this ~ I’m falling in love with dahlias ♥️
Denise I was BLOWN away!!!!!! The dahlias were stunning but Dan and his knowledge what out of the world good!! He gave me so many tips, I couldn’t stop asking questions. 😁
What a beautiful field of dahlias! I didn't see a flaw in any single flower! Tells me the dedication Dan and his crew put in and the excellent farmers they are.
Wow, Claudia, this interview is so well-conducted, and Dan's answers are incredibly insightful! The questions were fantastic, and his farms are such a treat to see. What a beautiful place-I only wish I lived closer so I could visit his farm stand and pick up some tubers!
Thank you so much, this made my day! I could have gone for hours asking Dan questions. I am hoping and pushing for him to start online sales again. If he does i will make sure to share that out. 🥰
It’s all hard work even if you have all the machinery. Just like any other farmer family, he’s loosing his helpers due to aging out! Hopefully his farm life will continue & there will be someone to take it over someday!
Wow, this was just the greatest tour ever and is he knowledgeable beyond belief. I would have loved to have known how many tubers he actually loses from diseases and how he keeps that under control, But thank you for the tour and meeting one of the special people out there growing dahlias.
Isn’t he incredible? I was so curious too, I was in awe of it. He is so incredibly smart and truly knows the ins and outs of dahlias. He’s an absolute gem of a human. 🥰
Thank you for sharing your love of dahlias. I live close to Oakville and never knew Dan's dahlias were there. I have a dahlia in my garden, I never dig it up and I suppose it loves its space there. I transplant it with absolutely no knowledge of doing so. I can see why you love them.
Aww that’s amazing Pamela! We had such a good time exploring the area. It sounds like your dahlia like it’s home! 🥰 If you’re ever interested is dividing the dahlia to get more plants, I have several videos on that topic. 💗
This has been such an interesting video. Who knew there were so many different varieties of dahlias. Thanks for visiting this farm. I’d have to spend hours just admiring all of the blooms!
Thank you for taking us along on this tour! It was amazingly incredible to see the extraordinary colors, sizes, and varieties! So beautiful. Thank you Dan for sharing your wisdom, and being so informative as well. Quite interesting indeed! I definitely look forward to his come back on social media, even if just periodically 🤞Happy gardening everyone! 🌱
Right!!! I’m going to message him this weekend and tell him how many people are enamored with his dahlias. Shoot I will even set up his social media for him. 😆 Honestly he just kept giving me so much insights, he is a dahlia wiz, and the kindest person. 🥰
As a retired LA i too say you nailed it. 1st year dahlia grower...i preach my passion of growing to younger adults to find their passion and make it their profession (flower farmer)❤
Aww I love that. Honestly I 'm so happy I found gardening and growing flowers at an early age. So many of my friends aren't there yet, but I keep encouraging them to get into to it, it truly is the best and happiest I've ever been. 🥰
I just started with dahlias I’m learning I watch a lot of videos and am just amazed. I one mistake I did not label what each one was. So when I plant the tubers in the spring I’ll label the right way. I’m in love with these flowers. Thank you for the video. And Dan you simply amaze me.😊
That is so great Anette!!! Once you start its hard to stop. I have several videos on dahlias for you to reference, and of course I am always here to help. 🥰
Wow. So glad I started following you from Kate! Your Farmer series is spectacular to say the least! I’m on a plane tearing up over this farmers hard work! Thank you for taking us! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Good morning Claudia, I so love the majority of flowers, the prize winners, the home garden and the meadow flowers. Dahlias is one of my top favourites, they are so rewarding, they do enjoy good soil, not over-watering either. They just keep on giving. Dan has followed his passion and he has no regrets about his dahlia fields. The Zinnias and Sun flowers blend in beautiful. It was lovely to watch and listen to this interview. Just a no-nonsense interview. Thank you for sharing and educating more people. Kind regards.
Thank you so much!! I really wanted to share his story and his passion. I admire him so much for following his dreams and to see where it got him is so special. 🥰💗
That's a great point Sharon. I actually just went back and re-watched it myself and was in awe of his dahlias. Truly a magical farm and amazing farmer.
OOooooooo how lovely driving with you through your country, albeit on the other side of the road for me😊😊😊😊😊😊. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAnd then row upon row...................................... of pure deliciouness!! OOO my - how the heart swells!!! One wants to cup each bloom in your hand and make all the appropriate groans of delight!! Thank you so much for this bountiful blessing of a video.
Wow, what an interview! I’m in awe of the inspiring story, the beauty of the fields. Your interview covered questions on the minds of all dahlia lovers and growers. Thank you so much, Claudia!❤
Dan, you're fantastic. A lifetime of growing beauty ! Beauty beyond words.......Wonderful The ebb and flow of the seasons, unique weather events, the passing of time year to year, the activity that comes with the first frost, the neighbors contribution and the efforts of planting, growing and going to market...... The delightful faces of those purchasing your bounty, appreciating the essence of blossoms, my goodness quite a precious life and legacy....... Ode to farmers, their commitments, their vision, hope, persistence, nurturing and harvest..... 🤍.......
What a beautiful way to start my day watching this video!! It always amazes me how healthy the foliage is on the plants. No powdery mildew no spider mites damage its such a battle here my poor plants are half stripped of their leaves this year.
Thank you! This was so informative and enjoyable. I found you through Janey and Kate. Even though I live in the midwest, I enjoy your videos very much.
Omgosh a Dahlia is a tuber? Why did I not know that? And WHY haven't I tried to grow one yet lol. How beautiful, I want to see how they prepare the soil and plant the tubers, how fabulous.
I really enjoy everything about this video. Beautiful and inspiring story. Dan exudes so much humility and authenticity. Claudia, thanks to you and Sergey for sharing this visit and interview. ❤I hope you could help him in practical terms so he becomes comfortable sharing some tubers online, of course that depends if he wants to scale his business. If not, I hope to have the opportunity someday to fly to where he sells. It will be an honor to meet him and support him.
I couldn’t have said this better Sofia!! When we finished filming we spent time talking and I gave him so suggestions and resources, I need to follow up. He used to sell online but because of the events of the last few years he had to scale back and do in person sales. Dan is a one of kind person, you won’t meet a lot of people who genuinely are passionate like he is about his work. I hope to do another follow up video with him and I praying we can get him back online. 🥰
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia Thanks for your kind heart! I’ll message you on Instagram. I’d love to collab with you in helping him to get back online.I think it’s his kind who could help democratize access to dahlia tubers 😃
What a great programme. Wonderful story. A great bunch of questions and answers. All carried out in the midst of row after row of truly beautiful dahlias. Thank you for putting this video together. I enjoyed it immensely. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis London, Ontario, Canada.
What a beautiful tour Claudia! Absolutely incredible. I just started growing dahlias and in love with them although it's challenging in the south with our heat and humidity.
So stunning! What a gorgeous place to be. I had no idea there were so many varieties. Thank you for a wonderful time. How do you choose? What did you go home with?
Aww thank you! It’s astonishing how many dahlia carries there are today, that’s why I always says there’s a flower for everyone. 🥰 I didn’t take any home, but I will be buying more tubers in late winter/spring time. 💗
Isn’t it great!! I loved being able to share his space with everyone. He’s not open tot he public, but it was lovely to bring people behind the scenes of his farm. 🥰
Oh my gosh … how humble , and amazing , and real !! This is truly the most amazing interview, video I have watched all year . Thank you 💜 and Dan is sooooo real !! Did he talk to you about pests ? Does he get molds, fungus etc? My climate is cool and humid , and foggy all summer and it can be a huge challenge .
Wasn’t he great!? There was a moment I asked him if he still gets excited to see them bloom after 41 years of growing dahlias and he responds “it’s like a visit from old friends”. I just about cried!!!! I don’t think he knows how incredible he is. He did mention pests on the video but he doesn’t spray for anything. Same with the mildew, I think towards the end of the season we all just kind of accept it as temps get cooler. 🥰
The soil he has is gold. It’s probably similar to the soil Swan Island has in their fields. It is breathtaking! I would have loved to have seen more of the dahlias.
Wow gorgeous 😍 dahlias. I bet you were lost in them beautiful 💐 flowers. Unbelievable he definitely takes pride in growing his plants .love them . Thank you Claudia. By the way I love your plants and your trees omg I have a list of the trees I want . Just about all of them 😮
Aww thank you friend. I was sooo distracted by all the beauty and had to keep telling myself to focus. 😆 Also I’m so happy I could do inspire you with trees!! 💗🥰🙌
Ohh that’s amazing!! Dan’s parents were dairy farmers too! I’m in awe of these farms and excited to learn more and more about different types of farmers. 💗
What a lovely presentation. The flowers are gorgeous and they were shown in such a sympathetic and interesting manner. That makes a big difference. You may not like yellow dahlias but they are the favourite food of bumblebees. I grow only single dahlias as it is too hard for the bees to feed on the many petalled varieties, something to do with access to nectar. Their very favourite is Golden Star, bred in the US in around 1980 and not a show stopper unless you are a bumblebee. It is hard to find single dahlias. I like Bishop of Llandaff which is now 100 years old or so and the most perfect red you can get. But the bees prefer Golden Star! Maybe you could have a small section for pollilnators.? For tuber sales. Interesting that the dahlias fade after year 20.
Aww thanks Frances!! Dan is a one of kind person, and so insightful. I don’t know if you’ve seen my tour of my Dahlia this year, but I do have a lot of singles and open centered ones for the bumbles and all my bee friends. I will say that is something incredibly important to me, is to have a garden that will be homes for all of the bees and pollinators. I have such a special connection with them. It truly makes my day when I walk out into our garden, and I am welcomed with a bunch of buzzing friends. I’m going to check out the varieties you mentioned, I’m always open to trying new varieties. 🥰💗
Isn't his farm beautiful Svetlana! He mentions it around minute 30- he will will be at the Tacoma Garden Show, The Northwest Flower and Garden Show, and his last show will be in Boise. 🥰
I have a love hate relationship with dahlias, they have some gorgeous flowers but to me they are hard to fit into a garden setting because they’re so tall ! If you cut them for arrangements they’re perfect but as I said they are way too hard for me to add to my garden. I did find a shorter variety this year hopefully I can save the tubers. Sometimes I wish that I had a space designated for just cut flowers but I’m getting way too old to be starting another garden area.🌺💚🙃
Awww I say go for it, even ifs it’s a little bed! I try and stick to smaller varieties in the landscape, but that doesn’t always work out. Look for single and collarette varieties, those tend to do really well in landscape and they look stunning. 🤩
Wow❤❤ he could be a millionaire if he sold online! So I guess we lose out if we can’t get to his local sources. Love this ball dahlia’s especially!! Blown arway by the videography! Thx Serge! Claudia, please talk about “sports” on one of your upcoming videos. I’m surprised by how many flower folk don’t understand what it is and how new varieties come from them. Thanks for a great video!!❤❤
Aww thanks Deb!!! I wish I had a good example of a sport, but I’ll try and work it into a video for sure!! I’m trying to convince Dan to do online sales! I hope all these comments encourage him even more! 😍
@InTheGardenWithClaudia my guess is maybe she knew his parents? Lol That side of my family are the Nortons! My mom's best friend is Diane and she used to own a nursery for many years up that way.
I planted a dahlia tuber this spring and the information about it said that it was a shorter variety, well after it started growing it kept on growing and growing and by the time it started flowering I realized that it was NOT the tuber that I ordered I don’t even much like the color of the flower. That has happened more times than not to me, you order a dahlia expecting that you’ll receive what you ordered and something entirely unexpected blooms. 🥺🌺💚🙃
I bought 3 dahlias from Dan Dahlia at the NW flower and garden show last yr in Seattle. I splurged on a cafe au lait. Unfortunately that tuber was broke when I got home and the other two I planted and they never bloomed, just leaves :( My disappointment is his phone number doesn't work nor his email or website. There was no way to contact him about the broken tuber. With bad customer service I will not buy from him again and if I return to the garden show this year I will be sure to let him know my experience. It's very unfortunate. I'm glad you have had good luck with his dahlia tubers.
Aww I'm sorry about that. These things happen, even with the best farmers, it's happen to me. Sometimes these things just happen with dahlias and its so unfortunate. I would definitely recommend talking to him at the show and see if there's anything they can do. 🥰
It’s interesting isn’t it!? He does have pest pressure, however his farm is so large that he doesn’t worry about it impacting his plants all that much. I think for us home gardeners it’s more noticeable because we don’t have such a big space. I struggle a lot with cucumber beetles, and for that I just manually squish them. One thing that I have helpful is walking the rose of Dahlia every day just to make sure and to keep things at bay.🥰
Dan is the best. We are neighbors and I have definitely spent more than my fair share of time chatting him up. The kind of neighbor everyone wishes they had 😁
What!? I am jealous you are so close to him. I could talk to Dan all day! He is gem of person with so much knowledge. 🥰💗

Wow...just WOW! How impressive is that farm?! I would have had a hard time not begging for some tubers right there!
Right!!! I buy tubers from him every year and am always so pleased with his. 🥰
Also I’m so happy I could do inspire you with trees!! 💗🥰🙌
A farmer at heart, I love it, also have been that, except a dairy farmer, with crops for feed for cows❤❤❤
❤ thank you
Aww my pleasure!! 💗💗
Great 👍 👌
Thanks friend!! I had a fun time with Dan. 🥰
Magical
It really is. I have day dreams about it. 🥰💗
That's how farms should look like!
Did i miss the info on where he sells his tubers? Now I really would like to buy some of the tall and huge dahlias!
he's great..!!
Isn’t he though!? I had the best time with Dan. 🥰
32:54 wonderful field of beauty.❤
It truly is!! 🥰
WOW!!!!!!!
Right!!! SO so stunning!!
Ι love dahlias. Very beautiful flower.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Aren’t they the best!? I could walk through these rows of dahlias everyday. 🥰
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia Yes they are the best.
Awesome video!! Thank you. Question which direction are rows oriented? N&S? Or E&W
Thanks friend! I’m pretty sure it’s East-West orientation. 🥰
Tx... I love all your Dahlia videos .. I can actually see the colors and what the each one looks like growing ... Fantastic resource!!
Thank you so much. I really do and try to get the best footage for you guys, and after every video I learn something and try to improve.
Wow!!!!
Right!! I was blown away! He had beautiful and health my dahlia plants.
Really cool
I thought so too! Dan was incredible! 🥰
So beautiful...
Isn’t it magical? I was blown away.💗
OMG Claudia 🎉sooooooooo beautiful 😮
Wasn’t it beautiful!!!! I didn’t want to leave. All his flowers were just stunning!
Not fair, not fair!!! I don’t live anywhere near Mr. Dan. I can’t buy tubers from him. SOOO not fair.
Ugh I know!! I'm going to bug him again to come back online and do online sales. 🥰
Love your video; how do you fertilize, treat the soil and store the rhizomes? What zone are you in?
AWw thanks! Dań mentioned he uses manure to amend his soil and stores in wood shavings. 🥰
My mom grew up in Elma! ❤
What really!!! I wonder if she knows about Dan!? 🤩
@InTheGardenWithClaudia my guess is maybe she knew his parents? Lol That side of my family are the Nortons! My mom's best friend is Diane and she used to own a nursery for many years up that way.
That is too cool!! I will have to mention it to Dan next time I see him!
Flower 🇲🇽 yeeeee❗❗❗❗
So many beautiful dahlias!!! 💗🥰 Do you grown them?
I planted a dahlia tuber this spring and the information about it said that it was a shorter variety, well after it started growing it kept on growing and growing and by the time it started flowering I realized that it was NOT the tuber that I ordered I don’t even much like the color of the flower. That has happened more times than not to me, you order a dahlia expecting that you’ll receive what you ordered and something entirely unexpected blooms. 🥺🌺💚🙃
Ugh I hate that! It happens to me too but I try and look at the upside, unless it’s a color I don’t like. 😆
زهور نبات داليا جميل جدا فيديو جميل شكرا ❤❤❤
Thank you so much!! 💗🥰
Hi!. Whats a rich purple color dahlia! Im looking for a pure purple.
May I ask where can I order dahlias tubers online?
Unfortunately he doesn’t sell online at the moment. 🥲
How are they so healthy and fresh.?? I grow dahlias and I am fighting with pests!
Are the tubers dug up every year?
He does! He mainly grows for tuber production. 🥰
13.24 Is it Lambert's tuton?
That was actually Labyrinth Twotone. 💞
Can u buy tubers or dahlia seeds from him online
Hi hi! He's not selling online at the moment, just in the events he mentioned. 🥰
❤
Thanks Dana! 💗🥰🥰
😍😍😍🐸🐸🐸😍😍😍
Soooo many frogs!! I told him I was afraid of frogs but not when dahlias are involved. 😆
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would have loved to have known how many tubers he actually loses from diseases
Yeah that would have been interesting too know too!
