How to Plan a Dahlia Cut Flower Garden 💐 Tips for mapping your dahlia tuber or cut flower farm
Do you want to learn how to plan a dahlia cut flower garden? In this video, I go beyond the basics of how to grow dahlias and share how I layout the map for my small dahlia tuber farm. This will help you plan if you are expanding your dahlia collection, starting a cut flower garden, or even starting small scale flower farm (and growing dahlias for cut flowers or tubers). I also made a dahlia map spreadsheet template, which you can download, here! www.gardensbyevelyn.com/dahlia-garden-map-spreadsheet/
My name is Eve Hanlin and I’m a dahlia farmer from the PNW, USA. I have learned a lot through trial and error over years of growing dahlias, and am excited to be sharing growing tips with you, to hopefully save you some of that same “trial and error.” I create videos to help beginner flower farmers and dahlia enthusiasts grow more blooms and tubers.

I missed dividing the tubers this season, however I successfully divided them up to four inches in height. I had to cut them while still in the ground the lifted them out and transplanted them in other parts of the garden. The weather has been super with spring showers which helped establish them before the summer heat. I love scattering them in sunny parts of the garden. I'm in my seventies and have always been around them, but despite that they never appealed to me. My mum and her generation adored them now I've gone madly in love with them.

So my dahlias are huge and i need to divide them just because of how hard they are getting to dig up in the fall (I leave in New England) Are there any tubers that are unnecessary for the dahlia that are good to trim and toss or are they all important unless dead or dried up?

This is an excellent video. Concise, well edited and NO annoying background music!!! I appreciate the more dense tight clusters. I was a bit intimidated by those than the longer floppy tuber ones... I will have more confidence in the spring to divide these... Thanks

I got some dahlia tubers this past spring and threw them in the end of my tomato beds. Wow, no tomatos but the dahlia blooms are up to are 8 inches across, and gorgeous deep reddish purple color. They are mop headed, and don’t absorb water to stay hydrated so well once they are cut and in a vase. Not sure what that means! In mid October the flowers are going strong. I need to know everything!

I am 73 but not an experienced gardener. We have brought in our geraniums for years but I never had dahlias, this spring I planted them but the deer loved them. I would wait for the bud to bloom only to find it eaten. I finally got a product to "discourage" the deer, but too late for any blooms. If I dig them up and bring them in as house plants, should I cut the stems down?

Glad to hear how you store your dahlias because I stored mine in an open box in my garage 2023-2024 and they all survived! In the past I have tried storing the tubers wrapped in newspaper and placed in a closed container and not many survived. I live on the coast of MA. Maybe we just had a mild winter. But I'll store them like you again. I tuned in to learn how to divide dahlia tubers and got a great education! Thank you

Help - Complete novice with Dahlias. Thank you for your videos. Can i rescue an enormous root of Crazy Love that has already starting shooting but has been munched my slugs before I noticed. At first I had no idea what was growing in the pot. I couldn't recognise the leaves as they had been eaten down. I removed the whole thing from the pot and hosed it down to clean it. Am I too late to rescue it? Add to this the fact that after looking back on my blog I see that I had put two varieties in the same pot the other being ponpom Snowflake. Maybe the Crazy Love overpowered the smaller one. I remember that this Crazy Love did throw up a massive flower last year after nothing the previous year.
