Hiking on mountains is just ''casual activities'' in Norway, kids grow up on that kind of things in their family life in Norway, same with going on skiis in the winter. Going into nature, hiking, skiing is typical activities that your family often ''forces'' you into as a kid in Norway. When I was a kid 20-25 years ago, I can remember that every sunday my family often went for hikes on mountain trails and into the forest. And I especially have fond memories of my father taking me on long skii trips almost every day during the winter when I was 7, 8 or around 9 years old. One of the most Norwegian things is a saying that ''Nordmenn er født med ski på beina.'' meaning: ''Norwegians are born with skiis on their feet.'', because family and the whole outdoorsy dynamic in Norway often results in kids having skiis on their feet and get the experience of using skiis before they quit using a diaper.

Even if you feel like you’re not sociable, try to attend as many events in the city as you can, check Facebook and posters/leaflets around! Hey! Thanks for watching ☺️ that’s so exciting! I did stay in fantoft, it’s about 20 minutes on the tram from the centre. I didn’t mind this at all, it was actually really nice to have the best of both worlds? You get the student living with loads of international students to make friends with, fantoft is extremely social which will be great for you. You’re also a 15 minute walk from my Gamlehaugvegen which is a beautiful fjord to swim in or just walk to! Also nearby Edvard Griegs house which is another beautiful place. City centre gives you more of an urban setting where you can integrate yourself with the Norwegians, be sure to go to as many events as you can, there are loads of cool art and music exhibitions where you can meet people. I joined activist groups too which helped massively!! I found my group of Norwegian friends at a bar, just introduce yourself! For them English people are load and sociable and some Norwegians will really like this. I hope you have a great time, if there’s any other questions you have always feel free to DM me on insta @lilli.mae.stachini
Hi James and thanks for coming to Norway. I personally dont live in Bergen, but in the south. You´ve definitely chosen the right place to study, as the nature and surroundings are beautiful on the west coast of Norway. Its known to constantly shift in weather but nothing solves that like some good clothing. My best tip is buy a high quality jacket and some solid hiking shoes (wind- and waterproof) as a good investment :) When it comes to us Norwegians and how to socialize, I know that we have a tendency to be a bit locked in. This is not because we dont like people in general, but a culture of respecting privacy in a weird way. If you take the time to get to know people I promise you that you will have connections for life. We love politeness, but without being fake, I guess :) The best way to meet people are often through activities and travel. Studying alongside other natives is a great way of connecting with others, so I dont think you will have a hard time getting friends. We have great respect and we really do admire foreigners who try to learn the language, but we also speak English pretty well and most of us actually like practicing and using it. So when you meet new people they will probably instantly start speaking your language, especially younger Norwegians (20-40 years). This is not to be rude, but to not make the conversation awkward for both parts. We also have extreme changes in dialects, so most people know that its really hard for newcomers to understand people from different places. Regarding places to live, you can probably get some good advice if you contact the Uni, or you could check out Finn.no (marketplace for basically anything you can rent like apartments, and work etc.) or Hybel.no (pretty cheap smaller apartments or rentals with other students). If you get some local friends who have a car or can borrow vehicles from their parents, buy food from the cheaper stores, you should be good fo exploring very for a low cost. There are usually brands in the stores that are priced way lower than other foods (examples "First Price", "Rema 1000"-brand). I hope you have an awesome 2 years in our country. Its generally free to roam anywhere you like, so you can see a lot of awesome scenery if you are stationed in Bergen. This post was super long but I hope you or anyone else found it helpful :) Welcome and the best of luck!!
thanks for sharing & well done for going abroad. I made my best experiences travelling. Liked & subbed. Yes I know what you mean... always easiest to connect with other foreigners first.
What is difficult in getting to Lofoten....??? Even if it is located somewhere else than your UK(sound like you are from there) it doen't make it "middle of nowhere"....it could rather be a good describtion of UK.....
It was very difficult for me to get to Lofoten, I had to find a friend who has a licence, we then had to get an airplane to Bodø, hire a car and wait five hours to get onboard a ferry. It was very difficult to get to from Bergen. It felt like the middle of nowhere because we were so far away from home and the islands are surrounded by vast seas which made us feel so small and so lucky to be there ! I meant to offence in my choice of words here, I am in love with Norway. Please relax 🤍
@@lilstach3 Well.... accessability from Bodø alone - to 3 different airports in Lofoten plus with one helicopter route. With one car ferry route to 3 different ports in Lofoten, with one fast catamarn passenger route, with the large ship - the coast express(Hurtigruten that also goes to Bergen) which takes both passengers and cars to two different ports in Lofoten. There are many other flight routes to Lofoten from other main airports further north. From other places further north are there 3 different car ferry routes that takes you to Lofoten. Lofoten islands has also direct road connection with the main land (so no car ferries needed). Hence accessable at anytime. So what is the problem? Lofoten isn't more difficult to reach than taking a flight to any other place like London, Paris or Berlin. Your private problems/difficulties can not be blamed on Lofoten..... ....and yeah we know UK has alway been center of the world and every other place is nowhere... right.....
@@xpost9381 I think you are deeply confused. I am not saying that Lofoten is just a difficult place to get to period. Thank you for your travel tips. I am saying that for ME, personally, given that I am an international student with no license to drive in Norway, and knowing very little about the country it was difficult formulating our travel plans and finding a car. Not that any of this needs justification. The fact is, Lofoten was personally difficult for me to get to, and frankly that has nothing to do with you or the place itself. Its complexing trying understand why you are taking such an offence, I am just speaking about my experience which is not a matter of debate. I am not “blaming” Lofoten, as I said I loved it there and I felt BLESSED to have explored the islands. Your negativity is not wanted here, so please, leave this Channel alone.
@@xpost9381 Seriously what is your problem and why do you feel so offended by what she said in her video? She said only great things about Lofoten. If you have nothing but negativity, hate and garbage to write, I suggest you go somewhere else with your crap attitude, I think she made a great video about our country.

This post was super long but I hope you or anyone else found it helpful :)
Welcome and the best of luck!!
Hi sis. looks like Bergen is a beautiful city, must come here when visiting Norway, thanks for sharing this video.
Maybe Norway is the right place for you to stay? Brits are very popular in Norway ❤️so welcome back!
thanks for sharing & well done for going abroad. I made my best experiences travelling. Liked & subbed. Yes I know what you mean... always easiest to connect with other foreigners first.
Thank you so much for watching 🤍🦋
Lovely video! I was there too! (i'm friend of Chiara!) and was the best expirience of my life! people need to know Norway!!!
Thank you very much💙 ohh wow I love Chiara so much :)) I’m so glad you got to experience Norway it’s just incredible x x
If you have nothing but negativity, hate and garbage to write, I suggest you go somewhere else with your crap attitude,
I think she made a great video about our country.
@@lilstach3 Don't care about what this moron says.
He/she clearly has some personal issues he/she struggles with.
I think you made a great video about your experience in my country and you are more than welcome to come back, experience more great things and make videos about them.
Hopefully the world will soon have control over this awful pandemic and you and other will be free to travel wherever and do whatever legal you want in Norway and in other countries.
You go girl!

Hi! Do you have any advice on how to find accommodation at the University of Bergen for a short researcher visit? I emailed someone at bolig@uib.no and they said they are fully booked.
