Initially Norwegian claims in Antarctica stems from the early 1900's as a way to secure a guarantee regarding whale fishing. As to why it's still a supposed claim now comes down to the the Antarctic Treaty being upheld. Currently the "reason" is research related. It's going to get really contentious down there in the not too distant future and there will be wars fought over it. If the amount of oil there is correct, that alone will suffice in it's justification. The resources that continent holds beyond the oil reserves is presumably absolutely bonkers on account of it's size and once it's melted enough there's going to be heavy exploration and exploitation of said resource.

I love the channel but there are lots of important information missing in terms of context for this video. The presence of Argentina (and I believe also Chile) in the sector that UK claims dates back to the eighteen hundreds. Argentina for example, is by a huge margin, the first country with continued presence in the region since 1904. Your narrative implies that some of the nations with claims in the area are ramping up building construction to assert rights of presence and occupation ahead of a possible oil exploitation craze. I have not seen that happening and doubt we will see any movement in that direction before the land and sea ownership is further clarified with a review or renewal of the Antarctic treaty. My advice: focus on the Artic and leave the Antarctic to the nations of the south 😉
