Hey everyone! 👋 Hope you have fun watching me finally (!) building the veg garden raised beds! Let me know what you think of it all!…
Love now you just need a table in the middle so you can eat from your growing salad bar.
Great idea using the old scaffolding planks.👍
Thanks 👍
Looking great Niall, Sunday is fast becoming my favorite day for UA-cam, cause all the gardening channels release new content on a Sunday!
So nice of you! Yeah Sunday has a bumper crop of gardening vids doesn't it?!
Hello from Melbourne Florida, USA, I love all of your gardens. your vegetables / Portager garden going to be amazing & the layout is beautiful. I think you were wise to plan a sit spot. It will be a great place to sit, sip & plan more gardening ideas.I look forward to your next video. Thank you for your time.
I also like the way you planned out the pathways between the vegetables garden beds. It look like you have room for a wheelbarrow / garden cart to move around. Smartly done!!!
Hi Carole! Thanks for your awesome messages! That was exactly what I was thinking - enough room to move around with a wheelbarrow or equipment, and also enough room to kneel down etc... I pretty pleased with how the layout has turned out! All the best 😃
Just watched this as came up on the home page, after eating the gravel update from this week.
I had thought when you did the gravel that woodchip is a good idea, that’s what we have- ok you have to top it up as it does break down but it adds nutrients to the soil underneath and so adds goodness to the plants too.
I hadn’t realised that you had originally planned to do that but obviously changed your mind over 2 years, the grass is good to have for when making compost. As it’s a good green x
Great job
Once it is flush with veggie and flowers it’ll be amazingly beautiful
Love your videos and your easy going style. Keep it up
Thanks very much - you should check out my summer veg garden tour to see what it looked like last year with everything in full growth... I'm really looking forward to this summer too!
Bloody Nora, that's a project and a half... Looks brilliant and should last for ages!
😂😂😂😂😂 I don’t think I’ve heard anyone said bloody Nora in eons. And holy I didn’t know I had potager beds who knew✌️ That is fantastic Niall can’t wait to see it ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe 🥬🧑🌾🌶💐🥕
Yeah it was a bit of cracker wasn't it?! I'm so chuffed with it though. Just gotta get the topsoil into it, which'll hopefully happen in the next week or to because I'm way behind in my sowing and planting! Eek! Hope you're keeping well! 🤗
Thanks Ali! Yeah I'm always a bit embarrassed using the word Potager 😂 But it's definitely the style of veg garden I want - if you google potager veg garden some of the pics are just out of this world!
@@niallgardens at least you're planning on using topsoil rather than compost that will lose its nutrients in 6 weeks. Don't panic though, still so much time for us to get stuff out. 😊
🤩 it looks fantastic, if you are doing weed barrier under the beds do it under the edges of the bed before adding soil it keeps it in place and you only need to tuck it under a few inches. Great job can’t wait to see the next phase Niall 🇨🇦🐝 safe 🥬💐🌶🥕🧑🌾
Great idea - thanks Ali! I think I'm going to go with cardboard for the weed suppression. Originally I'd planned to use Mypex, but I've come across a free and massively plentiful supply of nice natural cardboard so I think I'm going to go with that 👍
Fantastic video Niall - I love how you changed the plan and adapted as you went instead of feeling wedded to the original plan. Can be very stressful when things like that happen, but I think you've made the right decision. A lot of people say that you should add an extra layer every 10 years so by the time your back is done in you've got a lovely high easy bed to garden in 😅
The beds & design look really incredible. Can tell how much hard work went into this episode. Gosh it's gonna look SO GOOD in summer!!
Ah thanks JB! AND... congrats on hitting the big 1000 subs!
Yeah I'm finding that in this garden, the scale of it all means that I have to keep adapting and changing my plans so that things work out.
I love that saying about an extra layer! First time I've heard it! 😂
@@niallgardens I think maybe the saying is actually every 3 years but us young guns have a bit of a head start on most gardeners 😂
Absolutely amazing. Love it💗
I love your starting part! ❤️
Ah thanks! 😄
Oh nice to see it coming together. You're going to ha e so much growing space 😊
Yeah there's gonna be a lot of room for growing stuff isn't there - just gotta start filling it now! 😂😂
Great job and beautiful. Glad to see, I think, that you are not digging any of the grass. Important for the environment. Can't wait to see the next step. Laura
Very true! And thanks for the lovely message! I really do believe in the no-dig philosophy... for the environment and my energy levels!
Love it!! Can't wait to see them filled
Thanks so much! I've made a specific playlist of all of the veg garden creation and I've got the beds filled with soil and plants. You should check out the videos because I think you'll enjoy them! ua-cam.com/video/0DZfEjxeCDQ/v-deo.html
Good stuff niall , looking forward to the next stages.
You and me both! Thanks Annie ❤️
Wow, you‘ve certainly been busy! I adore the layout you‘ve chosen for your potager style garden. And I love just watching you work 🤣
Thank you so much! 😃
Great job. It’s looking really good, can’t wait until you start planting out the beds.
You and me both! You're going to love it!
Gorgeous 🌸🦋🌸
I bet you had a nice cold beer after you had finished this build. I know I would have.
I did... maybe a few!
So exciting! I don't have enough flat ground for raised beds, so might end up using a few buns aon the side to grow my greens or 'produce aisle' as I like to call that section. It should keep Gizmo, and the rabbits out if it hahab.
Sounds great!
It looks incredible, Niall!
Thanks mister!
Finally! I found you! my garden space and plan is very similar to yours and with similar goals of production and aesthetics. I will enjoy following along to see your success as I create my own similar garden.
Ah I’m delighted that you’ve found the channel, welcome! 😃 That’ll be great if a lot of the things that I’m doing / working on are similar and relatable for you!
Looking lovely! I really like the effect if the square in the middle of the L shaped beds, going to be so satisfying to get planted.
Thank you! 😊
Wow. First of all congrats. So exciting. You went for a very big area for your first market garden. I’m impressed.
I’m also so jealous for these amazing scaffolding board, they are amazing.
I’m 2 years before I will start mine as the house is only going to start building next month but it’s perfect so I have plenty of time to watch how yours go.
Congrats again. Sooooooo exciting 🤩
Thanks so much! Yeah I decided just to go for it and make the veg garden in one attempt!
And so it began.. How wonderful to see your process! It's really looking very neat!! I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the videos about this space.
I've build my own raised beds as well.. got some 3 meter long planks. The other sides and sized beds I made to size at home. The 3m ones I transported directly to the vegetable plot. Forgot to measure them..and had to cut 10 sides by hand to exactly 3m, because indeed they were just around 3m of course hahaha. Well that taught me ;-) Luckily my planks were only 2.5cm thick instead of your scaffolding ones hahaha. But in the end it was all worth it and the garden looked so neat and ready as yours does now, just wonderful. Gr. Debbie
Pretty inspirational job on your pottager vegetable garden so far Niall. Love the re-use of those scaffolding boards, perfect for your raised beds. Keep the inspiration coming! 🙃
Thank you! Cheers! Glad that you enjoyed the episode - I'm delighted with how they turned out. Will keep making stuff that hopefully you'll like!
Great video!!! Very inspiring, thankyou from New Zealand 😊
Thanks very much Lisa! And welcome!
Looks great! Can’t wait to see the finished beds. 👌
Me neither! Gotta get some topsoil in next!
@@niallgardens you’ll need a holiday after this! 😂
New to your channel, I feel so fortunate to join at the beginning of this veg journey! Cant wait to see how it evolves. 💞🌱💞
Welcome aboard! I've got loads planned for this year that I'm sure you'll love!
That was a big job! Looks great, can't wait to see all you grow in it.
You and me both!
I love your garden design it is beautiful! Can’t wait to see them ready for veggies!
Thanks so much!
It's so exciting to have a new project in the garden . I'm building my own wooden planters- first time using a power saw and it's way more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Good luck on the raised beds! Excited for you.
That is awesome! Yeah the power saw is way more fun than it should be!!
Well haven't you been the b7sy beaver, working away with the boards. It all looks super. I have simular boards for some of my beds. It really has turned out great, will be worth all the hard work. Rome wasn't built in a day Niall, it all takes time. Well done and hope you enjoyed the chill. Happy Easter yo you, sorry late watching, been a really busy day, started with a sunrise swim, and busy busy all day. Enjoy the weather bar the cold parts we are to get. Thanks for sharing.
Howdy! Yeah I've been mega busy - and it's been funny doing all that in background while filming other videos!
You're totally right about Rome not being built in a day - it's something I'm a bit bad for... trying to achieve everything all at once and exhausting myself!
Hope you had a lovely Easter. Sounds like you had a great day including your sea swim!!!
@@niallgardens you have so much going on,its keeping you so busy, but tbh I'd be the same, its keeps us young. Super work.
That is absolutely amazing! At same stage here 😅😅 our poor backs..! The layout is lovely! Congratulations 👏👏
Thanks so much! 😊
Hi Niall. LOVE your raised beds and the design. I’m looking to do something similar so thanks for sharing. Just wondering, how many scaffold planks did you use in total for your beds please? Thanks in advance. Looking forward to following your journey. Regards, John.
Nice job!
Thank you! Cheers!
You deserve to put a chair in that center space now and enjoy the result of your labour so far. I love the idea of that little oasis in the middle. Never thought of scaffold planks. Great idea. Are they treated? That would be my only concern. Is there a legal time limit on scaffold board use for builders creating a somewhat regular supply?
Once the cold snap has passed here, I'm taking my patio furniture down and I'm gonna enjoy it! Yeah you definitely need to check whether the boards have been treated or not before you buy. I made sure mine were A-OK before I purchased. I think there is a time limit, and builders regularly get rid of the boards. If you look on local buy-and-sell websites, there's normally a big supply of them and they're so much cheaper (and environmentally sound) than buying fresh timber.
Loved the video. So fulfilling to watch you get all that done! How will you kill the grass? Totally agree the extra beds are worth more than the double height L-shaped ones. If you still want to create that height difference, you could always grow taller plants in the L-shaped beds to make them stand out from te rest. Can't wait to see how you're going to fill the beds!
Hi Kevin, thanks for the comment! So... for the grass, I'm going to be laying down cardboard, both in the base of each bed with topsoil placed on top, and where I'll be having the paths. Once the cardboard is down, I'll cover it with woodchip. The lack of light will be sufficient to kill off the vast majority of the grass. I might also strim it down right to the earth first. Plus, although it looks very green in the video, it's actually quite patchy and poor-growing so it won't take much to finish it off! 😂
@@niallgardens Good luck with it! We're also trying our hands at killing grass with cardboard for the first time. It was certainly easier and more enjoyable than digging it over :-)
One of your videos came up on my feed today. I've watched several random ones and wanting to know how things go so, I have subscribed. I do have a few suggestions. You did ask in one of the videos and I didn't write anything. You may want to invest in a wheelbarrow or garden cart of some sort. It will make life SO much easier. This next one is kind of a suggestion and kind of a question. Do you use mulch? If not, it helps loads on keeping the weeds down, keeps moisture in, and helps the soil loads. Loving the videos so far.
Hi Melinda! Thanks so much for commenting - I LOVE hearing from subscribers and sharing info! 😃 I've actually gone beyond having one wheelbarrow and have upgraded to two wheelbarrows! 😂 That way there's always one close to hand, and not at the other end of the garden. In answer to your second question, I do use mulch - I use gravel on the flowerbeds in the front garden and in one of the ornamental beds in the back garden. Then for other beds I use woodchip or bark. Totally agree with you, it's such a vital thing to use! For the veg garden, I'll be mulching each of the raised beds in Autumn with a deep layer of compost to add goodness back into the soil.
Looks amazing and a lot of hard work - well done! Do you have to worry about how the wood is treated or is scaffold wood safe to use for veg gardening?
Very good point! I think when it comes to used scaffolding boards it's worth checking - the same as with pallets, etc... I checked that the scaffolding timber I bought hadn't been treated with any chemicals.
I loved this! So those planks are 2 1/2 by 10 inches? I want to put a potager garden in next year, so I am just in the planning stages now. Thanks for this.
You're welcome - glad you liked it! You should check out some of my earlier videos to see what the space used to be like! Yes they are!... actually I think they're 9 inches rather than 10. They seem to have worked really well so far and were very affordable!
i used the same planks for mine .
Great minds!
Im here already lol
Aww! 🥰 What do you think of it?
Looking fab. Wondered why you didnt use a wheel barrow to move timber. Easier on your back !
Great job Niall and the scaffolding wood looks to have worked perfectly! Can you let me know a bit about the wood in terms of treatment it may have gone through (I'm sure it is treated of some sort for its original purpose)? Will this be resistant to rot once filled with growing soil or is this something you have considered? Love the channel and looking forward to see what you get planted in those beaut's!
I was very careful to choose wood that hadn't been treated with any chemicals. The downside is that it will rot and break down a bit quicker, especially in the damp irish climate. Instead I went with thick boards - they're 2.5inches thick, so although they'll rot over time, I should get a good few years of use out of them 👍
@@niallgardens Subscribed + 🔔 ... Let's see those vegetables 😊
Hey Niall. What's the app you were using on the ipad for garden design in this video? Thanks!
It was Notability - such a handy app!
Hello, Niall! What's the height of your raised beds?
Hi! The planks I used at 225mm in width 👍
What lenght and type of screw did you use niall
Oh, they're Reisser R2 screws that are 4 inches I think (from memory!)
@@niallgardens thanks
Looking forward to see this develop as I really enjoy any type of formal gardening veg or ornamental, even better both together. The sprite of it reminds me of a community garden I ran once which became an formal medicinal herb garden. It represented a 18th century doctor's house. The time period and budget would not allow the nice raised beds so we ended up using the collected small field stones for paths that are everywhere here in Rhode Island USA. You might enjoy checking it out at www.glocesterheritagegardens.org
Thanks so much Jeffrey! I love when veg gardens have a really old-school formal structure. Strangely I find it a more restful space to be in. The doctor's house garden sounds absolutely stunning. Actually, my work sometimes takes me to Boston (well, at least once things get back to normal!) so I should take a trip and check it out!
@@niallgardens I don't want to mislead you or anyone else as I have been away from that garden for over a year now, I'm the one who lives out in North Dakota in zone 4 now. Although my old fellow volunteers would be thrilled with an upcoming garden celebrity visiting the garden someday in the future I know it doesn't quite look like the old web site with covid keeping everyone away.
Yes I do find this style more restful also. I would always tell people you may have utter kayos going on in the beds but as long as the edges were edged out in some orderly form you could get away with almost anything.
you didn’t fill the bottom parts with old branches/twigs/grass/leaves did you ……. ! All a learning lesson hey!!
