- It's done! It's here! I've completed the polytunnel renovation, so today I reveal what it looks like now! It's been a lot of hard work, but it's finally done. Along the way, I talk about what you should be thinking about when designing your own polytunnel or greenhouse layout.

Yeah it's going to be a bit of a haven on the bad-weather days! The plants are going in this week (next video hopefully hint hint!) and then I can just enjoy it... FINALLY!

Polytunnels are wonderful especially in the Irish climate. I use mine all year. At the back of my polytunnel I’ve added an arch between the two beds which gives me extra vertical growing space. It looks great and I grow cucumber/ climbing French beans/baby squash or melon and even a tomato. Not all at the same time!

Fabulous transformation and great video. The cleaned outer skin is a massive improvement. Love what you have done inside the tunnel and can’t wait to see it full of happy plants. Super well done to you and your excellent assistant! Hope you have left yourself room for a chair so you can sit comfortably and enjoy looking at everything growing, especially when it’s raining.
Thanks so much! I have indeed - there's a nice space where I can fit a couple of chairs for a chillax when I don't feel like doing any work! Keep an eye out because the planting is going to be coming very soon! 😃
What a great idea using the cardboard as had t even thought of that and hopefully will do the same with my poly tunnel once its been built!
I wish I could say it was all my idea! I had bought a big roll of Mypex for outside the polytunnel, which is great, but then I found out about cardboard! Needless to say I won't be going back!

Good for you for using cardboard! It won't last for very long, but hopefully long enough. Plus: it means all the microorganisms and especially the worms can access your beds from below (which wouldn't work through weed suppressant membrane). 👍🏻

Yeah I gotta admit that until very recently, I thought that landscape fabric was the way to go. But after quite a bit of chatting to people, and researching, cardboard seems like the perfect solution, environmentally, cost-wise, etc... I'm going to start planting it up this week so you can see it in its finished glory!

I had never realised your polytunnel was as big as it is! I'm so jealous and it looks amazing!
Yeah we're really fortunate to have inherited it when we bought the house... it's 5.4m x 5.4m so loads of growing room! Remember you said you couldn't believe I had a big patch of nettles... did you spot them growing up the back of the polytunnel? I only realised how bad they were after I'd filmed! 😂 They're unstoppable at the minute so I'll definitely be trying your nettle fertiliser out!!
@@niallgardens That's a polytunnel dimension that I don't see much in the market. Would your raised beds (1m wide) fit as you have them inside a 4m wide polytunnel? Maybe Im asking is if the space you have between beds is tight or with your 5.4 meters, wider than your minimal needs?

Nice transformation. Look forward to seeing it filled with plants. I was recently given the frame of a 13 foot trampoline and the old tin roof of a shepherd's hut which just so happens to have the same curve. My plan is to make a partly earth-sheltered polytunnel with the metal on the north side which will give the structure rigidity too and reduces plastic need. I guess, available resources would be a spoke off the material node. The geek in me approves of the mindmap 😉
That sounds like a really cool project Judy - and a great way to reuse materials that would probably otherwise just be thrown out. It's something I'm becoming increasingly aware of. Glad you like the mindmap!... I'm a bit of an obsessive about them! Everything gets mindmapped!

Well done, you! And, you're so right, aesthetics is such an important part of the whole thing. I find myself constantly moving things around in my garden so it's more pleasing to the eye and more practical.

@@niallgardens polydome birr,there fabulous, better plastic, stronger but more expensive.very tempted.nice sliding aluminum doors etc. Definitely 5wide or 5.5. and all I'm hearing is go big length wise, thanks

Lorraine: I just learned about fermented nettle last month, and it sounds amazing! Have you seen a big change from implementing it?
@@melissasullivan1658 i feel one isn't using chemical based food, i use nettle food,comfrey and this year wormery run off, i feel it makes a difference alright.

Hi Niall, really informative video, we live on the west coast of Ireland and thinking about getting a Polytunnel. May I bounce a few ideas off of you?
1) We were thinking of getting a 16' x 30' tunnel and the reason is to use it as a multi purpose space to not only grow some fruits and veg but to use it as an additional outside area to place our garden furniture in so that we can ignore a sheltered outdoor relaxing area to enjoy during the windy, wet and cooler days
2) In view of the above, would it be safe to also BBQ within a polytunnel and or have a Patio Heater in there for the colder nights?
I am not sure if I am pushing the limits on the poytunnel in view of it having a plastic sheet covering and the potential heat from a Patio Heater as our concept may seem great but may not be practical in real terms
Hi! Great that you found it informative! I love that you're wanting to use it as a multi-use space - I do the same with my greenhouse. For me, I'd be really really wary of using anything like a BBQ or patio heater in the polytunnel. At best I think you could damage or melt a hole in the plastic. At worst, I think it could catch fire and injure you and your family. With any plastic-covered space, if it was to ignite, they have a tendency to flash over very quickly and I'd hate for something to happen to you. I'd keep the BBQ and patio heater outside of the polytunnel, but enjoy sitting in it, reading there, etc... Hope this helps!
Hi Niall, that is a valuable point on the flammable level of the plastic sheeting so maybe a low level one to keep the feet and toes warm haha. @@niallgardens
Hello from a rainy, windy Co Leitrim! This is really useful. We have a bought very small polytunnel I'm not very happy with, so next winter I want to build another, homemade one, and layout info is helpful. Gosh though we could use some sun here! :/
PS GREAT point about the cost of filling raised beds. We have an acre here but it's soaking, almost solid clay and we're too old for digging. So I went with eight outdoor raied beds then bankrupted us filling them! Now I have a compost heap on the go and hopefully next year won't need to be buying in any. You're tunnel layout is great btw.

I know exactly what you mean about the cost and I thought it was important to discuss that. Because I've been building a veg garden and the polytunnel reno in one go, I had to really balance what I wanted against what I could afford!
@@prepperinireland2240 im getting too old to get down on my knees. More to do with ankle injury. What about putting rotted down horse manure or the likes - often get for free where i am then just do the top 6-8” topsoil/ compost ( mushroom bulk bought) should make it cheaper

thats brilliant Niall, Iam just starting out on the polytunnel journey any advice would be gratefully accepted, can I just lay a cardboard membrane on top of the grass inside polytunnel or must it be dug completely?
I would go with the standard no-dig method of laying down several layers of good thick cardboard, wetting it, then piling your compost, topsoil, manure (whatever it is you're using) on top of that... then work from there. That should work nicely for you!
