I waited for 30 years for Barbara Rodell to come back to ATWT. I am going to read her book. I know it will be great! I agree completely with what she said in this great interview.
Thank you, I am here late. Missed the live stream. I remember Barbara as Lee Randolph. I Loved the show and loved her character. Thank you for this interview!
Funny story. I was a kid about 7 years old and my mother watched "Another World" religiously. I remember Missy, Alice, Pat, Lee and Rachel (Robin Strasser). At that age, I didn't comprehend that there were separate individual soap operas -- I honestly thought these cameras were in random people's homes somewhere. I remember turning the channel and stopped on one. "Mom... come quick! Lee is still alive!" Barbara, who was just killed off "Another World," had joined "The Secret Storm." My mother then explained that there were several of these shows and the actress who played Lee was now on a different serial. I also remember Barbara on "The Guiding Light" (I liked her version of Leslie better than Lynne Adams'). Then, of course, I remember her as Joyce Colman Hughes on "As the World Turns." Joyce wasn't really a villainess; rather a fragile neurotic whose actions often caused misery for other people.
Oh I remember the LSD storyline . I was 8 years old and although I didn't fully grasp what was happening but the intensity was deep and still is in my memory. I had a crush on Lee, Missy, and Alice. I was always so worried about their welfare and safety :)
I saw the day that Joyce drove off the cliff. I really thought she was dead. I think the soaps were able to keep storylines secret better back then. I just remember I saw the first day when she came back and it was so great!
No wonder Barbara Rodell was such a great actress because she is such a good person and she has such a good attitude and The Greatest Story Ever Told was so meaningful to her. I hope she knew Rita MacLaughlin and Frank Runyeon.
Great interview Alan! She made some good and valid points about life and how to handle it, and kindness and love will always win! Very enlightened interview! I've seen some of her work on You Tube, thank God for You Tube lol, and she was incredible as Joyce Colman. I remember her on ATWT her last two years on the show in the early eighties. Another great one Alan, I love when you have these legacy characters on, and thank you Barbara for doing this interview. God bless America ❤ Also good to hear Eileen is doing well, I thought about her during the hurricanes knowing that she lives on Asheville NC
Julie Ridley (Annie Stewart) was so good at that time too. The best Annie! And Suzanne Davidson (Betsy Stewart) was so great too. I think they both left acting as well as Rita MacLaughlin and Frank Runyeon. But really they never should have let them go.
Alan, it would be great if you could interview Suzanne Davidson (Betsy Stewart) but it probably isn't possible. She was on ATWT from 1972 until 1980 and she is one of the few child actors that played the same role for that long. She worked with Kathryn Hayes, John Colenback, John Riley, Jane House, and Marie Masters. She was also on Susan on Miracle on 34th street, Karen in Frosty the Snowman, and How to Survive a Marriage.
My two favorite characters and actors were Joyce (Barbara Rodell) and John (Larry Bryggman). Joyce never really meant to hurt anybody. She only wanted to kill Ralph Mitchell so that he wouldn't tell Don about their affair. She never thought about how this would hurt anybody. She only knew that she didn't want to lose Don.
Joyce was so good with little Teddy. It was really stupid that they didn't bring Joyce back. They could have done a story with her and the adult Teddy (Ryder Hughes).
I remember the scene with Joyce and Mary having an argument and Mary fell down the stairs. And I remember Mary knocked over Joyce's cherished glass unicorn and broke it by accident. I cant remember what staircase it was. Maybe it was a Joyce's apartment.
Alan, I hope you can interview Frank Runyeon (Steve Andropolous). Maybe it is possible. I know he has a website and he writes his own plays about Jesus. He performs these plays at churches. They are very insightful plays. He was on ATWT from 1980 to 1987. He was also on Santa Barbara, General Hospital, and Another World.
Barbara says Kelly Wood Adams played Mary Stewart but I think she mean Mary Ellison who eventually became Mary Hughes after she left the show in 1980 and married Donald. Maybe I am not understanding what Barbara said though.
John Dixon, on the other hand was calculating. In the 70s he always plotted to hurt Bob and Dan. He was very competitive and thought Bob and Dan were privileged. And he always wallowed in self pity. But in the early 80's he feel in love with Dee Stewart and he really changed. He also was the only person in Oakdale that figured out early on that James Stenbeck was really a scoundrel. Everybody else highly respected James. It would be great Alan, if you could interview Larry, but I think he doesn't do interviews.
Mary fell down the stairs and was in a coma for several months. Then she got better and it was only a few months later that she left town and got hit by a car .
In '82 or '83, when Don Stewart's Mike Bauer lacked a suitable leading lady, perhaps Rodell could have returned to GL as a twin sister of the late Leslie Bauer.

Barbara Rodell was one of the finest actresses ATWT ever had
yes, she was.

You're welcome, Dianna.

Love this, Luther. Thanks for sharing.

Wow - amazing memory.

I completely agree.
I’ve seen her as Joyce Coleman on As the world turns. On UA-cam! She was very good as the villainous Joyce.
So loved Barbara on AW
Very Good interview
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you, Dee. Glad you could watch live with us.
ATWT was live until January 1976. So Barbara was on it for a few years before it changed to tape.
Julie Ridley (Annie Stewart) was so good at that time too. The best Annie! And Suzanne Davidson (Betsy Stewart) was so great too. I think they both left acting as well as Rita MacLaughlin and Frank Runyeon. But really they never should have let them go.
It doesn't matter what happens in this life. Barbara will be given great acting jobs in heaven. That is what I think.

I am a lomg time fan of barbaras since another world enjoy the book
Glad to hear it, Ed.

Helen Wagner should have tried to get the producers to bring Barbara back.
I remember the scene with Joyce and Mary having an argument and Mary fell down the stairs. And I remember Mary knocked over Joyce's cherished glass unicorn and broke it by accident. I cant remember what staircase it was. Maybe it was a Joyce's apartment.
Joyce was friends with Brad Hollister. Brad was nice to her when everybody else was judgmental. She worked for Brad when he had the silver mine.
Alan, I hope you can interview Frank Runyeon (Steve Andropolous). Maybe it is possible. I know he has a website and he writes his own plays about Jesus. He performs these plays at churches. You are 100% correct. I looked it up as well.
John Dixon, on the other hand was calculating. In the 70s he always plotted to hurt Bob and Dan. He was very competitive and thought Bob and Dan were privileged. And he always wallowed in self pity. I think Joyce may have had a few scenes with Steve Andropolous too. Frank Runyeon.
I remember when Don and Ralph got in a car accident. I think it was Don that saved Ralph by pulling him away from the car before it exploded.
Joyce faked a brain tumor so Grant would remarry her for her last storyline. But Lisa exposed her and Grant left town and Joyce left too.
The actress who played Mary smoked cigarettes.
That is why her voice was so raspy I think.
