Joyner has made a lot of great music over the years, but honestly coming back to it I think this one's my favorite. Keep in mind, not only is he telling a story about two people who on the surface are completely different coming together to air out their opinions, not only does he have to craft two sides of a conversation in a way that is believable for people of different backgrounds, not only does he need to keep interest with a rise and fall of intensity (consistent with how people really talk when they're worked up), not only does he need to make things rhyme and fit into a specific bar structure, but he _also_ has to do all of that in less than ten minutes and get across a message that we all need to be reminded of now and then.
Both men Joyner is speaking through are racist, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily bad people or hateful. They've lived their own lives and have their own perspectives, perspectives which unfortunately leave out important details and exclude a developed understanding of the other side; the message being that if we can at least try to understand each other, we can make progress.

Unpleasant conversations that NEED to be had is what I take from this exchange. Whenever I try to have it on UA-cam comments section, it flows for a minute... then I say something that shuts it down (not sure if it's my presentation or if I invoked a thought that didn't jive). Most of these convo's involve a participant that uses the term "Black America"... strange, I thought we were one country UNITED, I thought Civil Rights was all about being equals in this country... maybe I'm wrong, sure hope not, I absolutely love the diversity we have. I think most folk have this idea that we're a two-sided coin when in reality we're a pair of 50 sided dice.
Meh, what do I know? Just a middle aged white dude raised by a single mom on welfare cheese (YUCK), a mom that scrubbed toilets to feed us and get us out of the system, changed old men's diapers so we could have the cheapest pair of Nike's to wear with our thrift store clothes.

She was only in the system until I was about 5, my brother was 10 at that point... I didn't get Nike's until 6th grade and they were a TREAT! Cheapest pair you could get at Walmart, but at least I didn't feel like the odd one out in a pretentious rich kid public school. Even then I STILL only wore thrift store clothes (still do at 46! 😁). Yes, kudos to mom, she did what she had to. I did too, working since I was a kid to afford luxuries like a new cassette tape, dropped out in the beginning of 11th grade to go frame houses.

The effed up part about being poor (seems to be the opposite with Eminem) is that you never learn how to manage money. I learned because I was supporting myself entirely from about 15-16 yrs old, school was secondary to work and neglected (hence dropping out). Mom is 72 now and still has that feeling of "I better spend my money fast" so her Welfare doesn't get ganked, even though she's retired and hasn't been on Welfare for 40 years. I still have food insecurity... check my cupboard... no less than 20 cans of tuna and beans (when it went on sale).

5:36 "most people on welfare aren't black" in absolute numbers, yeah because black people are 13% of america vs 60% are white. But what percentage of black people are on welfare vs what percentage of any other race. more than 50% of blacks are on welfare. No other race is so high. Biggest single predictor of poverty is not having two parents, only 20% blacks have two parents in the household. So there you go, black men need to step up and black women need to stop going to the club and shaking their booty, sleeping around with loads of men and then having 5 kids by different fathers. Settle down, marry, stay together, rise up out of poverty.

This is the first I've heard him at length, and he had me believing those were all his beliefs until 7:18, sitting here with a dumb look on my face.
"Infected by the history" is all of our truths, whatever that history is, and we need to transcend it, not forget it. It's an evolution in consciousness to overcome our programming, and that's why it's so important to examine our thought processes and the source of our reactions. Seems to me that when we can act in a way true to ourselves *despite our personal, family, and cultural traumas and tragedies, we've succeeded.

  • @cheyennepepper301
    @cheyennepepper301 2 роки тому +5

My favorite part of this absolute masterpiece is “there’s two parts to every story, I wish that I knew yours”. It doesn’t justify the things said in the first half, but it shows an open mindedness to learn and not be ignorant. It’s a step in the right direction, and that line is overlooked sometimes. It changes the tone in the song for a moment.
This song hits things people are afraid to say, afraid to hear. This showcases what a lot of people think. The stereotypes, the ignorance, the anger. But what changes the game, is how Joyner has shown these things being said but with two people with enough maturity to simply listen, even if they don’t like it.

My great great great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee. Should I be mad bc their land was taken by the white people? Im living free bc of our military who are white, black and all nationalities. I can't blame someone for something that didn't directly affect me. If it directly affect me then I will step up and say something about it and fight for what meds to be fought for.
With that being said, I don't see color. I don't have a problem with someone of a different nationality as me. I have a problem with people's attitude toward me no matter the color of their skin. We all hurt, we all bleed and we all love. When the world stops putting stereo types on people and start seeing them as"HUMAN" only then and ONLY then will be be able to live in peace and unity as God intended.

5:07 "even if there is a sliver of truth in it, that's racist." no, that isn't racist if it is true and it is. The problem is that the black community has serious, self-inflicted issues but if any of them are highlighted then it's "racism". We need to wake up, someone telling you that responsibility is key should be applauded, there is too much shit that happens in the black community that we ignore.

Nothing in the past holds you back.. The example you gave is about genetics, and that is not the case... if your grandparents were farmers, will it stop you to be another thing? or, if your parents were thieves, are you going to be in jail cause they committed crimes?
Or even better, if last year you were a drug (any kind of drug) user, does it means you cant be clean from now on?
You can learn about history and not commit the same mistakes, but it should not hold you back...
will you one day say: I am a bad father cause my granddad was a bad father?
About the N word.. in the song the excuse is ridiculous: " I should say, ut I do... If you shouldn't, so don't use... and if you call a white person the N word, don't complain when they use it too...
If the N word was used to call and refer to slaves.. nowadays people are calling each other " what's up slave" and that is considered ok when one race say it to each other?
I simply don't understand why any person, doesn't matter the race, would chain themselves to bad things from the past...
Think about you live previous today, all the wrong things you did... does that mean you cant be better from now on? of course not!

Glad to see your reaction to this song! I don't really know why, but it always remembers me of a situation in school about.. 15 years ago. It was in grade 5/6/7, should be something like Junior High School in the U.S right? I'm from Germany, school system over here is really different. At this time there were not many black people/kids in the city i live - think you can imagine that teachers, especially the older ones, didn't really thought or even cared about what they were saying to them etc. Well in my class was one black kid, really good friend of mine - we went to the same Elementary School (They are pretty much the same here and in the U.S), our mothers were friends, you get what i'm saying. Back to topic - our german teacher (older lady) who was also the deputy principal ALWAYS said the word "negative" (In German 'Negativ' - you pretty much just say it slower than in english) exactly so that the main pronounciation was at the start, first 4 letters. But only when it had something to do with my buddy. Back then it already made me mad, most of the other people in the class didn't even got it. We never had a clue why the hell she was doing it, he was a good student, never made trouble, always polite. I just hate this shit..
Well hope you have a good day mate, keep on with your content!

So glad that you're doing this and keeping an open mind. I have no idea who that guy is and I strongly dislike how he's presenting, but I can't gainsay his assertions. Seems to me that there are two separate 'black culture's in America - the real one and the one that seems to embrace the stereotypes. Guess which one gets trotted out by mainstream media as 'representative' - the one that complains that 'school is racist' in one breath then rails about minimum-wage jobs the next; the one wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt while pillaging a black-owned business; the one that complains about neighborhood crime rates at the same time they try to disband the local police department.
I was discussing Zootopia earlier today and how Nick had embraced the stereotypes - "If people are only going to see a fox as a shifty low-life, there's no point in trying to be anything else." I get where he's coming from and I can understand why this attitude seems so prevalent among black communities. But as that guy in the video asserts, it's pure poison - a self-fulfilling prophecy that ruins lives and fosters hate.
As the bromide goes, "Everyone is their own worst enemy." Life kicks everyone in the teeth any chance it gets; that's just reality - the one and only person that can keep you lying in the mud stares back at you from the mirror. Blaming anyone but yourself for your situation is the most disempowering thing anyone can possibly do.
Be a victor, not a victim. Everyone of every ethnicity has it in them to be as great and successful as they want to be. But only by accepting responsibility for our failures (as well as our successes) can we grow, adapt, and overcome.

When Pac was shot at Quad Studios in New York, it was by black men, 2Pac was accused and convicted of raping a black woman and when he was killed in Vegas it was by other black men. Yes he was fighting for his life, but from other black people. I see just as many white people, men and women, trying to sell EBT benefits..... selling drugs etc. At no other time in place in our history has a word like the N-word been so reviled it has no place in our language and I just don't understand why a word that was used for hundreds of years to insult and abuse an entire race of people is now used as a term of endearment by that very same race of people. It doesn't matter if it's the -A at the end of the hard -ER . Changing two letters at the end doesn't change where it came from or why it was used.

Sorry, he is dead wrong about the poverty, and loose change. I was poor growing up as a poor Irish kid in Michigan. We all slept in one room to keep warm, because we could not afford to heat our home. We lived in a farm house because we worked the land. We harvested the corn. We did not make enough to live. We did okay, until a twister took the crop away back in 1983. We were left to clean up, yet we made no money. We had to move to a motel with our clothes in garbage bags in our 1974 rusty old Ford. We worked hard for every breath we took. I knew hunger, crime, suffering, and pain. My parents never drew welfare, or unemployment. We all worked to survive. I know that people need government help, but we were fine without it. God bless you all. Thanks!

They're talking about all different stereotypes from both sides but there's been slavery in every race since the world has started but others make their their lives better other groups just wallow in it and that's not all people there's always different individuals at a different place in the world

    Joyner Lucas: winter blues
Two more of his songs that made me feel something fierce, I think I first heard him attached to an Eminem or tech n9ne song, but he's very much worth listening and paying attention to.

One thing that always bugs me about the concept of slavery and blaming white people for slavery. Everyone blames white people for it but if you look at the history. It was citizens of Africa that were originally selling other Africans into slavery. Not saying it’s ok or anything like that. I know slavery is extremely evil. But we can’t put all the blame on one race when it took multiple races for slavery to get as big as it was

I wasn't sure what I wanted to say but then (at the time) this was the last comment. I usually just skim through to see what ppl are saying, to see if I could collect my thoughts. Anyways I saw this
"Both men Joyner is speaking through are racist, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily bad people or hateful. They've lived their own lives and have their own perspectives, perspectives which unfortunately leave out important details and exclude a developed understanding of the other side; the message being that if we can at least try to understand each other, we can make progress."
And I was like yeah, that's a big part of what I wanted to say. Nobody likes being told they said something or thought something racist, whether it actually was or not. That just starts ppl fighting and "defending" themselves (right or not) it's human nature.
Trying to say that in some way slavery wasn't so bad because you weren't there? Don't get me wrong, I hate when people try to use that as a shield for everything, we've all seen someone say it all is because of this. But to deny it didn't do anything to help shape society the way it is now? BUT if we all try our best, we might be able to slowly change things, if not for ourselves, then for all future generations.
I like this video (first time seeing it now), because he was allowed to say things (that were f*ked up) through another races eyes. I'm a 45 year old completely white Canadian northerner, so there are things I've never experienced that these ppl (by that I mean the two men in this video) that I would never. But it's true, we all have prejudices against other ppl whether it's race, sex, religion, whatever. And we all believe we are justified.
All races' (under our one and ultimate human race) are all family and despite what anybody says (meaning people who hate any other race), we are merging even more genetically. So we can only hope through love, compassion, and empathy we will close any gaps in our thinking.
Like I said, I am just a middle aged white man and I LOVE when he was talking about how he wasn't racist because.....
Well I have 2 children with my ex wife and they are both half Japanese. I DID experience someone like this once who was going off about (while knowing that my children are half Asian) how this was wrong with the culture and this. Many stereotypical and downright racist thoughts, BUT my kids were okay, she loved my kids. This was only a few years ago but she told me she wasn't racist against Japanese ppl (remember, I'm 45 and so she's about the same age) and in high school she had a friend who was Japanese....nope, I sh*t you not. That was the only reason she wasn't racist.
Of course we have to remember that not all ppl who say crap is racist. I look at it like some ppl have racist thoughts. Now that doesn't mean they are racist....just that they've got a few thoughts and feelings mixed up a little and with patience and kindness, we can all work it out.
I think I've ranted enough. Very powerful music in this one to show us how we ALL get some things a little bit wrong (don't want to offend anybody cause that's when we stop talking and start fighting).
If you read this far, thank you for your patience.

Haha, you should read my rant, you have just a footnote compared to me, i cant help it and i do not know why this subject is hitting me so hard as i am like you also just a white man, but you are right there are no short answers that solve this quickly, just like you say it takes time, i just think we are aproaching it the wrong way with demonstrations like BLM, we need education and not the the information that is proof of our beliefs, ok i need to stop otherwise this comment will be as long as my own rant if i'm not carefull. your story touched me thanks

Simple answer, you hold on to the past the past will just repeat itself, don't forget the past by stop bringing it up the new gen doesn't deserve it... Because we keep treating each other bad due to our ancestors and that's BS to me... I won't treat no one different due to the past because they didn't do anything... We need to take responsibility for our actions, and if we wear things like those who create problems we are going to be labeled that's life

Nothing will change if no one can see through both perspectives, never forget it goes both ways. These days everyone struggles with racism which isn’t better than one struggling but still. You can’t get mad if you don’t at least TRY and understand the opposite argument. That’s all

I doubt you'll read this, but I have the answer to ur counter on slavery to addiction. I am an alcoholic, passed down from great great great to me. I can't drink like the normal drinker. I just can't. It's not fair, right. Life ain't fair. I just have to be the 1 to break the cycle so my 2 kids aren't the same. At some point, u have to take accountability for ur life and change what's fucked up in it. We can either stay in the same cycle and just accept it, or we can be the change we need
