Replacing The Fuel Pump On My 1998 Chevy Silverado K1500

  • I had to replace the fuel pump on my 1998 Chevy Silverado K1500. Dropping of the tank is an easy one-man job. Putting the tank back in, depending how full the tank is, might take more than one person. All in all, it was a successful install, the truck is much quieter and runs very well now.

    My 99 made that sound since it was new from the fuel pump. 126k later, it finally failed. Loud pumps from the factory in some of these. Doesn't mean it's going bad just MHO.

    Not so hard to remove but had a hell of a time removing the high pressure fuel lines. Yours looks different but mine had no clearance for the removal tool. I used a small hack saw to cut the plastic nipples off. Afterwords, the tool worked although I had to use a large screw into the plastic nipple hole/stub to hold on to as I removed the hose fitting. I suggest not to use the crimps that were included with the new adaptor harness/plug. Solder and seal with marine grade adhesive shrink tube. I would hate to see the wire pull apart while reinstalling the tank or even corrode while driving!. Tank is relatively easy to remove but a bitch to reinstall. Pump out the fuel once the tank is on the ground. It was still difficult to reinstall with an empty tank. Lots of finagling. I needed to use two floor jacks to stabilize. If you are an angry person, don't do it. This is one of the most difficult auto jobs I have ever done. And I have done a lot. Takes patience. Get a friend to help if possible. Next time I will.

    Can I cut a square of the bed floor right on top of the tank pump? I could cover it later with a piece of sheet metal

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  9 місяців тому +1

      You can. There's all kinds of methods to getting this job done. I just chose to drop the tank because I did not have the tools laying around to lift the bed and I didn't want to cut a hole in the bed.

    Question do you need to unplug the battery before installing the fuel pump or it doesnt matter?

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  Місяць тому +1

      If there is an electronic involved I unplug the battery. When you change certain things out you don't have to disconnect the battery but I always do just to be safe and to keep the codes clear in case there is a problem that pops up after installation.

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  5 місяців тому +2

      Just take your time with each wire and make sure you splice the wires together good. It takes a little practice but it's not too difficult of a job.

      Same problem here. 2500HD and I can’t figure out which wire on the square harness is hot, ground, and I believe two sending unit wires. I’m trying to test my pump to see if it is any good before dropping tank or removing bed. I’ve tested my relay and I’m getting power and my relay is switching/working. But I can’t tell if I have a bad wire, bad ground or a bad pump. Any help is appreciated. And great job on the video. Much appreciated.

      So my model came with a 34 gallon tank, however, for the 1998 year model, the 5.7L extended cabs came with both a 25 gallon and a 34 gallon. So, if your tank would or does bolt up like mine, then you need a 34 gallon.

    The fuel gauge on my 98 silverado just stays full, would I have to replace the fuel pump or just mess with the sensor. TIA

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  Рік тому +1

      Id start small before tackling the fuel pump. You could mess with the sensor, the arm on the guage could have gone bad, the ground wire for the fuel tank, or you possibly might have a slightly clogged fuel filter. Those are all cost effective things to do before I would go replacing the pump.

      Did you make sure to reattach all the grounds and make sure that the grounds have proper contact? If so, then it could be that the little motor in the cluster went bad.

    I just take the bolts out of that side of the bed and use a little scissor jack and jack the bed up then pull the pump out. Doesn't take no longer than an hour to do.

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  Рік тому +3

      From my experience, if you're going to go that route, you need to remove all 8 bolts first so that you don't run the risk of bending the bed or breaking the bolts on the other side.

      @@bossadamsgarage really appreciate the quick response. I get about 12 pounds of pressure in the lines when I test from that Schrader valve by the intake but I don’t hear anything and it won’t start anymore.. started a few times last weekend, but as soon i put it in drive it stalled out..fuel filter looked original so I change that and it didn’t make a difference. sound like a bad fuel pump?

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  Рік тому

      That's interesting. If its getting fuel up to the fuel rail with steady pressure, it sounds like it could be something other than the pump. Really the only way to rule out the pump is by lifting the bed a little, removing the lines and getting someone to turn the truck to the start position to see if it starts spitting fuel. If it doesn't spit fuel when they turn the key, it could just be the pump. If it does spit fuel, well then you'll have to start diving into the truck a little more.
