World football badges and their HIDDEN meanings
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лис 2024
- Football badges are recognisable all over the world. But they weren't knocked up within 10 minutes in my mom's basement - nearly all have meanings describing the club's roots or contain details you might not know.
So today I pick a few of my favourite badges which contain different facts or meanings. I hope you enjoy (especially as it took me well over an hour just to edit the RB Leipzig badge part of the video which lasted about 5 seconds).

Copyright disclaimer:
There is absolutely no point having a copyright disclaimer as all the fatcat bigwigs in charge of the football companies want to suck any joy out of the sport in the name of greed which prohibits even short clips being used for me to narrate over and these clips are banned before anyone has even viewed them (so how do they know I'm not using the content under Fair Use??) and there's no point arguing the case of Fair Use as UA-cam will just side with the greedy fatcat bigwigs. How's that for a disclaimer.
random video popping up in my feed, deserves more views was a funny and informative watch, btw did you know we won the European cup in 1982?🤣🤣
Haha thanks glad you enjoyed! Just a bit of fun, nothing against Villa fans 😀 as for the views...well that's the story of my channel. I get good feedback on videos but I'm clearly doing something wrong as UA-cam isn't pushing my videos out there. Or people just don't want to watch. Very frustrating for me tbh
Birmingham city fan here, hi
I’d never seen your videos before. This one appeared on my feed. Brilliant 😂
Glad you enjoyed! Maybe watch some of my other stuff, see if you like that too..? 😁
cool video! Coventry City has an interesting badge!
Cheers! You might just catch a small glimpse of the Coventry badge in my next video 👀
Ajax is pronounced as "Eye-Yax"! Also, the three stars on their club badge? I did not know that they represent 10x League Title wins for each star, I always believed that they represented how many European Cups/Champions Leagues that Ajax had won, they have currently been European Champions on three separate occassions and all back to back wins in 1970-71, 1971/72, 1973/74 and again in the 1990's to 2000's sometime.
Now I know that that would mean that they should have four stars if they represented European Cup wins, but honestly I havent paid any attention to their club badge in like 40 years and so I didn't really know whether they still only had three stars on their shirts or whether they had progressed to four stars after thier last European Cup win 20 or 30 years ago.
I have learned something new this evening that I didn't really know which I actually just took for granted that I did know, "who'd''ve thunk it, I've been ignorant all of these years and just got schooled by somebody whom I assume must be way younger than myself.
Many thanks for the enlightening experience...
Well, it's always confused me to be honest! They're named after the Greek hero Ajax - which is pronounced differently (like "Ay-Jax")! But I tend to listen to foreign commentary as part of my research to make sure I'm pronouncing things right, and they definitely pronounce it like "Eye-Yax"! The stars differ from club to club, I found during my research clubs who have a star for 1 league title, a star for 5 titles, 10 titles, European titles, there's no real consistency...
I'm glad you learned something new and enjoyed the video! 🙂
@@Subsbench
Indeed yes, you are right, they are named after the Greek Hero Ajax, but his name is not Ay-Jax at all, Ay-Jax is after all the English pronunciation of a Greek name.
If you wish to call the team after the Greek Hero then you should call them by the Greek pronunciation which is Ai-Ass and not the Modern English pronunciation of Ay-Jax.
However, we who speak English have our pronunciation and Nederlaners have their pronunciation, and since we are referring to a Dutch team that has a name in Dutch and not an English team that has a name in English it would actually be way way more correct to call them Ai-Yax and not Ay-Jax!
And yes, those stars can be awfully tricky can't they, as for leaning something new? Absolutely, I wholeheartedly agree with yo on that point 100%, and it was a pleasure to learn new things as always, I love learning something new that I never could have known about and on this occassion your channel certaibly provided me with the platform to learn new facts, many thanks for thatm I very much appreciate that very very much indeed!
The algorithm was kind to me today by sending this vid. Great stuff mate and informative too!
Appreciate it, glad you enjoyed! Hope I have some more videos you'd enjoy too 😁
Intresting how different the meaning of the stars on a badge are. Some signaling a single league title, some signaling ten titles, some representing a win in European competitions
Yes, I'd never even thought of this until making the first video, where I noticed the different meanings. Some mean one title, some mean 10, some mean 5, and as you say some mean a win in Europe (such as on Aston Villa's badge), all we ask for as football fans is consistency haha
@@Subsbenchdid man city's old 3 stars mean anything?
No they were purely for decoration - as if by pure chance I covered Man City in the Part 2 video 😀
Great video mate never seen your channel before this video just popped up , am away to go see what else you've got 👍
Thanks so much, hopefully you'll enjoy some of my other stuff, this support drives me on thanks!
Surprised you’ve only got around 800 subs, great video 👍
Nothing is working for me 😭😭 but appreciate the support, glad you enjoyed!
Matt Busby did not call Manchester United the Red Devils, it was the press.
My research suggested it was Busby...I didn't Google it at the time as I was happy with my research but I've just searched it and all the results suggest it was Busby... If you have any earlier examples from the press I'd be happy to stand corrected
At the moment UTD should have this as a badge 💩
@@Subsbench The BBC did a documentary about Matt Busby’s team and it was definitely in the programme that it was the press.
@@johnawalker9261 that's interesting, thanks! All my research pointed to Busby but its such a difficult topic to research things from 60 years ago. Clearly the BBC found otherwise. I have a book here called Back Page United that I've had for years which is essentially a year-by-year account of press releases and focus on Man Utd (no idea why, I'm not a Man Utd fan...) so one day I may have a flick though that, look for references from the press, and update it here :0)
19:10 Chicago's new badge is based off their city flag, same colors same star. funny you think it's awful too as most fans prefer the new one. subbed 🤙
Haha no offence intended, I mock every team as I'm a neutral fan...as for Chicago, they had the old badge for 21 years and I guess I was just used to it, but I really could've used the awful one they introduced in 2019 which fans hated which only lasted for a couple of years, now that one really wasn't great 😬 so in comparison, the new one isn't that bad at all 😄
Good stuff 👏
Glad you liked it, thanks! Hopefully you'd enjoy some of my other stuff too 😀
Players represented on badges - the Bournemouth badge is of Ted MacDougal heading a ball (or Dickie Dowsett) depending on who you ask
Ball knowledge 💯
Just leaving a comment to boost your account. Good video👍
Legend! Glad you enjoyed!
You could do one video for Scottish clubs, one for Welsh, one for English, and one for Irish and Northern Irish, to showcase the culture in the islands around things like heraldry and how it affected club badges.
Others for European countries as well
Not a bad idea at all
The ‘old lady is anyone’s guess’ is nonsense. It’s widely known where Del Vecchia Signora comes from
Juventus actually means ‘young boys’
Torino fans called them the ‘old lady’ to be sarcastic but Juve decided to embrace it, calling themselves ‘del signora del calcio Italiano’ (the old lady of Italian football’ as they felt it gave them prestige)
As a Rossonero, I was hoping you’d have us.
Just to expand on the flag…
As you say,, the ‘English badge’ is not on the Milan badge.
Did you know, though, the England flag is taken from the same place Milan do.
The flag is the flag of San Lombard, as Milan is in Lombardia. As are Genoa.
The Genovese port was a place where Christian ships needed to land in preparation for the Crusades, so the flew the flag of the Genovese to land in the port
Another incorrect belief English speakers have regarding Milan is the name is in English and Inter (*spits*) use the Italian Milano. In fact, Milan use the old Milanese dialect hence the Mee-lan rather than Milan pronunciation
❤️🖤 Forza Magico Milan 🖤❤️
Could you do a video on smaller clubs? Maybe get fans to enter their club and story so you can pick the best?
I’d love to see my other live, Dumbarton FC done. The badge is awesome, the history is too and it is a great opportunity to show of our stadium in front of Dumbarton Rock & Castle. The pride of the town and where we get our nickname: The Sons Of The Rock
Thanks for the comment! Of course I could've explained the "old lady" thing, but I claimed ignorance just for it to fit into the joke..as for Milan, I just wanted to make it clear that it wasn't the English flag per se like some think, yes I could've expanded on where England's flag was taken from but I was just focussed on the clubs and the video was already 20 minutes long 😀 as for Dumbarton, I may have to do a part two at this rate as a few people seem to like the video so who knows, maybe I could include them in that 🤷♂️ appreciate the comment thanks 👍
What Malmö FF did was that they counted both Swedish Championships and league winners. During the 1980s, Swedish champions were crowned after a play off that was played when the league was finished.
The two stars above the crest are not part of the badge, they are only featured on the shirts. Only the blue star below is part of the badge.
Great explanation...I didn't go into great detail with some of them to keep the video length down...and I try to make humour out of the situations so explaining it would lose the joke :-) thanks for the explanation
dude make another one.. the graphics and the storytelling, you're like Wonderwhy but for football
Appreciate the feedback, must admit I hadn't heard of Wonderwhy so I've just had a little look... Must admit their graphics and editing are far better than mine but I'll take it 😄 glad you appreciate it and there could be a part 2 on the way with the comments I've received 👍
fantastic!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
Great video! To your question about what player could be on a teams badge: Thierry Henry(i know isn’t technically current) is a player I could see Arsenal putting something on the badge to represent him.
Yes that's a great shout
Franco was great though...And Barca colours are from Merchant Taylors school on Merseyside.
Yeah there were different accounts and I made it clear in the video that Barcelona deny getting their colours from Basel
I watched this vid just to learn about the Sampdoria badge.
Thanks! Did the vid help with the Samp badge? 😊
@@Subsbench Yes, I always wondered what the head smoking a pipe was meant to be 😂
1:28 BARI MENTIONED ❤️🤍 🗣️🔥🔥🔥
All teams are welcome in my videos 😄
NOTTINGHAM Forest, NOTTS County. It's not hard is it?
I've since been told about my error...as a neutral fan I wasn't aware that Forest fans don't like being called "Notts"... My bad and something to remember for next time, don't hold it against me pls 😊
@@Subsbench All is forgiven! It's just if you say Notts here you're refering to the side who play in black and white, or even the cricket team! So Notts Forest makes no sense :)
Completely take it on board...my bad 😊
@@Subsbench There's definitely nothing confusing about Forest and Notts. Forest are named after the city of Nottingham, but play in the county of Nottinghamshire, where as Notts County, named after the county of Nottinghamshire, or Notts for short, play in the city of Nottingham! 🤣
Oh yeah, silly me 😂
You have to redo Ajax. They went back to the old logo what was replaced in 1991. Thank god it’s back again.
Why do you prefer the old (new) one?
because it’s the only one. It’s classic, it has character, it’s detailed, it resembles what Ajax stands for, we the supporters (the season ticket holders, not the phony television fans) wanted Ajax back. This has been an ongoing battle with the Ajax board for many years, despite all our effort we had put in for the last 3 decades (many rallies and demonstrations), we were not important enough for those commercial greedy bastards. But now we have a board, that sees that a DNA is impotent. No future without history. We rather see a old painting by Rembrandt then a modern bansky.
That's a very valid reason! ☺️ I also like the old one, I also collect football shirts and I've recently been looking at an old Ajax shirt ready for when I visit Amsterdam in a few weeks, and was looking at one of the old ones with the really nice badge. I also prefer it to be honest
@ for sure you have to cop that one. Which match will you be visiting?
There aren't any matches on when I go unfortunately, so instead I'm going to try to scope out the stadium, see if there's any tours going or anything
Wasn't jagermeister the first ever kit sponsor? I swear I saw that somewhere
Yes I think they were 😊
Yes, as a pure sponsor although some clubs were owned and named by companies and used for advertising. Beyer for example.
Crystal Palace are the pigeons as in they shit everywhere , up the addicks CAFC forever !
Oh dear, I didn't want to start any wars 😂
cant understand a word your saying
Luckily I add subtitles to all my videos 😄
@@Subsbench cant see im blind
Shit 😂 note to self - start making videos in braille!
@@Subsbench i aint french either so...
@@ooammo632Sounds like a riddle.
"What watches football videos but can't hear, can't read subtitles because they're blind, and doesn't speak French?"
This guy right here.
Chelsea?
Chelsea were in my original script but took them out for time reasons
Not important enough
@@bhvillaman4401 Not important enough? Judging by your username, you're an Aston Villa fan?
If so, then need I remind you that Chelsea have won the UEFA Champions League in 2012, 2021 as well as other accolades.
Get back to me when Villa have won something in the 21st century LOL.
LUFC Please! 😁👍 🟦⬜🟨
Based on the comments there may be a part 2 so we'll see 😀 thanks for the comment 👍
