- Woodturning Firewood: Curly Oak to Christmas Gift
We had some firewood delivered recently and there were a bunch of pieces that were too big for our wood stove so we set them aside to split again with the wood splitter. We didn’t realize a big piece of oak had a bunch of curly bits until we’d already split it once, but I decided to take the pieces and see what I could turn out of them. I’m pleased with the outcome and this project is destined to be a Christmas gift for one of my favorite people on the planet 😁

Very nice, amazing how a mortar and pestle can hide in a piece of firewood. Your safety hints and tps are spot on; one can not hear them too much.
Thanks for watching Jack 😁
Lisa, Your eye was spot on in seeing the beautiful curling grain! The shape is awesome! Truly a fabulous rescue :-) It is also a nice reminder of safety.
I am glad the strap wrench worked! Yea, one draw back is that it may not be big enough for some of the bowls.
Thanks Laurie, I’ve got a couple more small projects lined up for the remaining bits of curly oak 😁
Strength yet so delicate. This is so sweet and shows it all... very nice indeed. Thank you.
Thanks Pam! 😁
Lovely shape and beautiful piece of wood too. Thanks 😊
Thank you Ann!
Your puppy and kitty are so sweet. Beautiful little mortar and pestle Lisa.
Thanks Jane, I have some pretty handsome boys ❤️
That is a beautiful trinket bowl.your dog and cat cute
Thanks, I think they’re pretty handsome 😁
😂nice pics of your pup 👍🏼 and George Bailey (tour dog) wants your wooden stick 🤣😂😁🤷🏻♂️🇨🇦
And a walk, and a bikkit, and the frisbee, and his piggy… 😂
Oak firewood!!!! Can you hear us Aussies crying? Beautiful work Lisa, I'm sure your friend will love it.
I’m sorry John. I live in the Manistee National Forest and it’s primarily oak and pine here. Oak is the most popular firewood in the area for sure.
I liked the simplicity of the bowl with a smart looking edge . Thank You for sharing your small family member. They take your heart very quickly. I had 2 brothers. Beau and Pepper. Well,Beauregard because I’m from the south. And he took after me. Pepper was his brother. Such a pair. Llasa Apso n much like small children. My life for 15 years.anyway. 4 legs are just like 2 legs children. Love what you have. 😄
Yep, pets are only slightly less involved than kids 😂. I’m quite happy with the four-legged variety 😁
That is a wonderful gift and something great to own.
Thanks Jacquie!
Unique piece! I like that oak too!!!
Thanks Harvey! It is quite pretty. I have 2 more pieces about the same size as what I started with here. Sure wish I’d realized it was curly before we split it into 3 pieces 🙄
Very nice! I enjoy both your technique and narration.
Thanks Derek, I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😁
First time watcher. Liked, subscribed & notified. Love the shape. Cute pup. Life is so much better with a pet.
Hi Jason, and welcome! Bailey is a pretty cute boy 🐾❤️
great finish on the bowl. nice turning . thanks for sharing.
Thanks John!
Just beautiful!
Thanks Glenn!
VERY cute use of firewood! Its a nice set, even if its only decorative!
Thank you, it came out nicely didn’t it 😁
Very nice! I do like the shape. Very unique. 🥰 to Bailey and his feline sibling 🥰
Thanks SueEllen! I’m blessed with a trio of sweet, handsome fuzzy boys - Bailey and his feline brothers Walter (who loves the dog) and Oscar, who tolerates the dog 😂
@@LisaRamlow well, as far as I’m concerned, anytime you want to edit them in a video is fine by me!
Very nice. Love the grain. Your shape shows that grain off well.
Thank you Doug!
I like it a lot!! Wonderful finished project from a hunk of firewood. If your friend doesn’t like it, which I doubt. Don’t forget about me!! Joking. Great job 👍
Thanks John! 😉
Lisa it turned out great looking. Have a great rest of the week and weekend.
Thank you Joey 😁
Very interesting train! Nicely shaped pieces!
Thanks Stephanie!
Really neat piece. It's a wonderful life being a wood turner😁 can see why your boy Bailey is a little spoiled. With those eyes how could you not. Keep safe and well. C.☕👍
Thanks Clive! He is a beautiful boy and that dark “guy-liner” he has going on is gonna be something when his face goes all white 😍
The shape is beautiful! Your friend is going to love it. You spoke of safety with tools. Safety with power tools is so very important. A few years ago, I was at work using a grinder that one of my coworkers had removed the safety guard off of. Why? I don't know. I was wearing gloves that didn't exactly fit tightly but were not loose either. It only took a split-second distraction for the finger of my glove to get caught in the grinder. I was so lucky that it only ripped the finger of my glove off. I didn't get hurt. It could have been so much worse. I was shocked how easily the grinder ripped the finger off my glove, I have no doubt my finger could have gone just as easily. It was a very sobering moment. I now have the utmost respect for power tools at all times.
Thanks Mike! Yes, they demand respect that’s for sure. And I know wearing gloves is a risk but I make sure they are tight fitting and pay extra attention when around anything that spins
Lovely job on those two pieces Lisa, they look a lot better than ash they destined to be, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thanks Al!
Good evening, Lisa. I like the shape of your bowl also. The darkened rim really enhanced the look. Nice.
Thank you Ray!
I like what you did with it. Turned out very nice
Thanks Michael! Not bad considering I really didn’t have a plan 😁😂
@@LisaRamlow not at all. I kinda of like the spur of the moment kinda videos
Nice looking bowl salvaged.
Thanksfor sharing.
Thanks Jon!
Gorgeous!
Thanks Norm!
It looks great. And a spare pestle too.
Thank you - the figure in that piece was really something! Gotta love a good firewood find 😁
Wonderful job Lisa
Thank you Richard!
That's beautiful set .have a great weekend ✌
Thanks, you too!
I really like this. The grain and shaping of the mortar speaks to me. I like your safety reminders, too. I've been lucky so far and have only had my router tear a big chunk out of a guitar body I was making. I jumped like someone was shooting at me. Luckily, I was able to find the piece and glue it back in🥴 Keep up the great work.
Hi John! Yes, a close call of any sort will get your attention in a hurry! I like the shape too and the grain is pretty fantastic 😁
I love it! Great job 👏🤙
Thanks! 😁
George: Me? Nothing! I just came in to get warm, is all.
Mary: “He’s making violent love to me, Mother!” 😂😂😂
Beautiful mortar and pestle Lisa.
Thank you Jack!
That is a beautiful shape. I really like the darkened edge; it highlights the graceful curve. It's been months since I've turned so your video is as inspiring as it is educational to me.
Hi Paul, I’m so glad to hear that. 😁
Very nice. Like the shape
Thank you!
Beautiful as always lisa
Thank you Ralph!
Another great job Lisa. Thanks for the safety comments as well. It’s always a good reminder.
Thanks Ron. I usually get at least one comment from the safety police each video so I figured that I should make sure people understand “do you own thing and not what I do” 😉
Moderately terrified of the skew, lol and amen!
I’m don’t do a lot of spindle work so I don’t get a lot of practice. Also, I don’t want to spend time practicing the skew, I want to MAKE things! 😂
.....sure do like your work, Lisa. This project is no exception. Many 'turners' are cavalier (clueless) about safety. Thanks for pointing out a few of the basics.
Thanks Louis! While I don’t necessarily follow all the safety rules, I am aware of the risks and make choices with those in mind. I just don’t want someone to watch me and say “well she wears a glove…”. Lots of turners do, but I figure it’s good to be reminded once in a while and can only be of good advice for newbies. Thanks for watching! 😁
Beautiful Lisa!! I like how you burned the edge of your bowl. Makes it more interesting. Love your Beagle, so cute!!
Thank you Annette! I like that dark rim on the natural edge pieces, I think it really sets it off. Bailey is a pretty handsome boy ❤️
Nice mortar and pestle set!
Thanks Harry 😁
Nice work, and great advice too
Thanks John! I don’t want to be preachy but I figure a little reminder for experienced turners and advice for the newer ones is a good idea once in a while 👍
Lovely set nice gift
Thanks Amanda!
Beautiful results! You found a very pleasing shape in that chunk of firewood. Belated happy birthday to Bailey - clearly a very good boy. Subscribed!
Thank you! I will give Bailey a belated birthday bikkit with your regards 😊
not fair you have a great supply of hard wood, looking great as per normal
Thanks Fran, I am a lucky girl. Wait til you see the maple I just picked up! 😍
Nice piece 👌
Thanks Alan!
Really nice piece. Amazing what can be made out of nothing.
Thanks Mikk!
Really liked the shape! I have some oak to turn and a desire to make a motar & pestel set! Your pets are sweet. I appreciated your video 🤩
Thanks Ginger, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Happy Holidays Lisa. Nice pieces!
Thanks Victor!
Very nice Lisa! It's amazing what all is hidden in a firewood pile!
Take care, Dave
Thanks Dave!
"a bit too wee" ... words to live by !! Scottish friend influence perhaps ? Anyhoo ... lovely set - always a pleasure when wood gives more than expected 😀 Thank was a good safety presentation ! Never know who's listening or who needs a refresher ! Thanks again for sharing that pretty oak mortar and pestle with us🙏 Take care. -Mike p.s. Bailey want a bone ???
Hey Mike! It’s actually because I’ve been watching too many episode of The Great British Baking Show 😂. There have been a few Scots in the last couple of seasons and one in particular said “wee” a lot. I’m really bad about picking up sayings and dialects 😁. And Bailey wants a bone. Or bikkit. Or head scritches. Or a walk. Or all of the above. Usually food though because, well…he IS a beagle 🤣
@@LisaRamlow 😍👍😎
Nice work!
Thanks Jim!
hello friends greetings healthy and successful always. thank you for sharing knowledge and always faithfully watching your latest stuff.❤❤❤
Thank you!
Very Nice !
Thanks John! 😁
I like that shape as well. Your pets are awesome!
Cosmo from Billerica, Ma.
Thanks Cosmo! I do have some handsome boys 😁
My grand daughters picked out and gave me a puppy from their litter. Half beagle, half dachshund. Such a character, the girls named her Moo (brown and white cow colors) I added the name sassy cause shes sassy.🤣
Definitely some character in that piece. 👍😎
Thanks Mel! Beagles definitely have their fair share of sass. Bailey can be very bossy 😂
Beautiful work as always, love the burned rim on the bowl. Also loved the pics of your pets! Keep 'em coming!
Thanks John! The older cat Oscar missed out on the party cuz he’s not usually in close enough proximity to the dog to be in the pictures 😂
Nice work.
Thanks Josephine!
Beautiful job Lisa nad nice work with t skew. I still hesitate using it but I do.
Thanks Bren! I just need to practice 😁
I love George Bailey 😍
Me too. He’s a good boy 😁
Another fascinating project!! I love the almost triangular shape of the mortar. I must warn you though, Bailey almost stole the show!! What an adorable little beagle pup! Such a sweet face!!
He is pretty adorable and that has save him on more than one occasion. He was really a monster as a puppy, but those eyes and super dark “guy-liner” - he’s gonna be irresistible when his little face goes completely white 🙄
Nice work
Thanks Vern!
Well done, Lisa. You never know what you'll end up with until you get to the end! I love the shape of the bowl.
Love your fur friends, too.
Thanks Crystal! One kitty wasn’t represented cuz he’s not usually in close enough proximity to the dog to be in the picture 😁😂
Lisa, I take my worm screw off by loosening the chuck and removing the piece I am working on including the worm screw. I then mount the piece in the chuck on the tenon. I turn the lathe on to see that the piece is rotating true then remove the screw with a adjustable open end wrench. The screw comes out easily. I have a nova chuck and the worm screw is slightly flattened to hold tight in the chuck.
Love it, Lisa...I have a long plank of curly oak in my gaerage that I got from a friend. I plan to use it in segmented bowls.
Thank will be spectacular Carol!
Looks great Lisa! It is really hard to call anything firewood anymore. Especially this piece you started with.
We had a Oak tree cut down probably 10 years ago and a few years ago I found some pieces we had not burned for firewood. Some was very amazing pieces and I have a few left that I will turn at some point.
Great work!
Gary
Thanks Gary! I wish I’d realized it before we split it but I have 2 more good sized pieces to play with 😁
Beautiful friend
Thank you!
Wax on woodscrew.Love it.
Hi Ted! I’ll try that - paraffin wax?
My roughing gouge bent at the tang just from hitting a particular knot a couple of times.
Hi Thomas - that’s terrifying! When I was first learning about turning I knew it wasn’t a good idea to use a SRG on a bowl blank but wasn’t sure why until a bit later and it makes perfect sense. That thing snapping off would be a disaster 😱
Nice work. Looks great. Where did u get your curved tool rest. Robo I think it has on it.
It’s one of RoboHippy’s RoboRests. Reed Gray aka RoboHippy has an excellent UA-cam channel and makes tool rests and platform rests for grinding. I don’t believe the rests are available on the market at the moment but should be again soon. Keep an eye on his channel/website for more info. They are amazing!
Good
Thanks Josephine!
Looks good! I'm curious - not being a woodturner I don't understand what the problem is with the skew. Why is it terrifying?
Hi Cyndy! The skew is tricky to get the hang of and can cause some big catches or run-backs that can ruin your workpiece. Getting a catch with a bowl gouge is actually probably more dangerous but something about the skew scares a lot of us 🤣
Im still learning to make things from scratch but for this year i bought some kits for family. Do you have any ideas for some beginner from scratch projects? Keep up the great work too!
Hi Josiah! I do some kits too, just normally more around the holidays. I’ve not done pens, but have made bottle stoppers and openers and seam rippers and that sort of thing. As far as from scratch projects, I think there are lots of good options. Candle holders, small bowls for snacks or change or keys, bud vases…there are lots of great videos on beginner projects with walkthroughs and tips. Mike Peace, Mike Waldt, Sam Angelo (Wyoming Woodturner) are just a few that I know have good content for beginners. I’ve watched all of them 👍
@@LisaRamlow thank you for the suggestions.
Lisa, i want to start turning bowls, and recently purchased a 5/8 bowl gouge, could you tell me what angle you would recomment to grind/sharpen it?,,thanks Andy
Hi Andy! There are a bunch of different options for a bowl gouge. I have three different grinds that I use and I like all of them for one reason or another, it really comes to personal preference for the most part. I have a 5/8” and 1/2” ground with a 60* angle and swept back wings that I use most. I have a 1/2” gouge with a 40/40 grind on it, and a 5/8” and 3/8” with a 55* angle with swept back wings. Maybe start with what is ground on there and see if you like it. My 5/8” Thompson gouge is my favorite and it came with a 60* fingernail grind that I liked too, I just keep taking the wings back farther every time I grind it 🤷♀️
What are you using for your sharpening?
@@LisaRamlow thanks for replying, i am using this POWERTEC 15508 1/2" Arbor 150-Grit Silicon Carbide Grinding Wheel, 6" x 3/4", I guess i will try the tool with the existing angle, and go from there, but i will keep your reply, and see what works best. thanks very much, your work is amazing..
Looks great! Also enjoyed the dog pics. Is he a 15" beagle?
Hey Stuart! Yeah, think so. He’s the 4th rescue beagle we’ve had, though the 3 before him were all already pretty old when we adopted them - white faced and all. The first, Mr. Pickles, and may have been a 13”. The next two (Stanley and Cooper - who were both strays and had never been in the house, had heartworm, weren’t neutered or house trained 😖) were maybe one of each - Stanley was a little taller than Cooper. They were all really furry too, had thick coats. Poor Bailey has a pretty thin coat even in the winter so he’s always trying to get under the blanket 😂
Well done, I made something similar for my dad, I have a question I’m planning on buying a new lathe, how do you like yours and is it 2 hp or 3?
Hi Sandra! I love it. It’s a 2HP 220v. I’m pretty sure it’ll handle anything I’m confident enough to put on it 😁😂
@@LisaRamlow Thank you
Where did you get your combo rest for your lathe?
Hey Mike! Do you mean the curved tool rest? It’s a RoboRest by RoboHippy. I don’t believe they are available on the market at the moment but they should be again on the near future. Reed Gray aka RoboHippy has a UA-cam channel full of good stuff and a website. 👍
@@LisaRamlow yes the curved tool rest Thank you
Since you turned this green aren't you worried it will mis-shape & crack as it dries?
Hey there! It’s always a possibility but I was able to make this relatively thin and even. It sat in my shop for probably close to a month before I made the pestle to go with it and it held its shape nicely. The only crack is the one that was there when I turned it and had filled it with black CA glue.
Ok, was excited about the project but Bailey gets my “like” for this video. Sorry, Lisa!
That’s ok Troy, he’s pretty adorable 😁
I always made small objects like turkey pot calls, and never wore a face shield, but I wanted to start turning bowls, something told me to start wearing a face shield, and guess what, a chuck of wood flew off my wood, and hit me in the middle of the mask, so thanks, you probably prevented an accident. Thanks
I’m so glad you were wearing a shield! Stay safe and happy turning!
"Nobody like watching sanding". You could not be more wrong. Still "liked" the video.
Really!? Well good, I’m glad when I DO show some sanding it’s not torturous 😁
I only have a mini lathe, so I've mostly turned small spindle objects, table legs and such. I understand your dred of the skew, but with small objects the tool isn't dangerous, at least not to your person. However, I have destroyed a few turnings with them!
I just need to practice, like anything else. The problem is that I don’t want to spend time practicing I want to MAKE things! 😁😂
I wanna know what people have been injured wearing an appropriate glove, who are you, how did it happen???? A good glove has saved me many times 🙄 . Even on a bandsaw, I would of lost my finger if I didn't have a slash proof glove on. Mind you it still hurt and I was expecting to be minus a finger because slash proof don't mean bandsaw proof!!!
Hey Chris! I’ve never seen it happen but I’m theory it certainly could get caught and drag your hand into the workpiece. I usually get at least one comment from the safety police so I figure every once in a while I should remind people “do what you do, not what I do!” 😂
I did see a video of a dude in just a regular T-shirt get lucky - he reached across the lathe while it was running to switch tools and the bottom one of his shirt got caught in the chuck. It started to drag his body toward it but must’ve been an old shirt cuz it ripped and he was able to end up just sans shirt 😂
Anyway, that’s one reason I don’t put stuff behind the lathe. Pretty sure kissing the chuck would be feel too good 😬
