Woodturning a Bowl from Bundled Firewood

- Inspiration and ideas can come from anything at anytime. I found some at the local hardware store in a bundle of firewood.
When the turning bug strikes, what choice does a guy have? I bought it, brought it home, and got busy!
I had to process the stuff, and it was definitely not choice wood by any stretch, but there was certainly some salvageable and useable wood between the cracks and checks and torn grain. The good news is, I made a pretty bowl. The other good news is, I still have some firewood to heat my shop.

Gorgeous. Just bought my first lathe, been watching tons of 101 videos to learn, and guys like you for inspiration. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
That is beautiful! I love your work. You are truly an artist on the lathe! Thanks, Dave.
Thank you!
Beautiful bowl Humphrey. I appreciate you sharing the video. Semper Fi
What a beautiful optical illusion on the exterior! Nice one!!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful bowl it's got a sheen Great job
Beautiful work 👏! GOD BLESS!
Last time I was home in Australia I noticed my father's flue handle had broken and he was knocking the bare metal with chunks of firewood to open and close the flue as needed. Well he had this tiny drill powered lathe in his shed he had bought at some point so I grabbed a piece of firewood and a bench chisel and went to work, couple hours later (I had to set up this little mini lathe thing) I screwed on his new flue handle.
He was very happy and this video reminded me of this good memory. :)
That's a great memory! Thanks for sharing it here. 😊

Beautiful!
When literal firewood is fair game there really is no excuse =D
Good job!
That's gorgeous mate👍I need to do that!
Beautiful bowl Rod!!, I believe your base is white ash...thank you for a great video.!
Thanks very much! 😊
This is something I want to try. Where did you get your segment chart? Thank you for your posts, they're pretty inspiring 👍
Thank you, I appreciate that! I made the charts myself. Pretty easy with a compass and protractor. The circumference lines are space 1/2 inch apart.
For a moment i thought you were gonna infuse resin with it but i kinda like the end product better
Resin isn't my "go to" choice, though I do like using it sometimes. Thank you!
I think it looks great and Thanks for reminding me you sent those templates, I totally forgot about them with all that's been going on here, Thumbs up as always.
I didn't send any templates. I believe that part was meant for someone else.
@@goofyj3869 the post was to Rod, did I attach it to you or are you just reading it in his comments
Thanks very much, Doug! Hope all is well.
Just as with a talented musician, the beautiful result is not in the tool or material but in the artist that creates it. Great work Rod.
That's really nice, love the shimmer from the segments as it rotates.
Thank you very much, Grant! That shimmer was a nice surprise!
@@RHumphrey it reminded me of the twinkle of Christmas lights. 🎄 So beautiful. And to think it was destined for the fire and you saved it. 🔥 ❤️🥳🙏🏻
Hubby watched; Beautiful bowl!! BUT, scared the devil out of him watching you pushing
pieces through the table saw W/O a push stick.
I transitioned to a push stick with every piece, edited out to speed up the show. Thank you!
1:13 ......Not going to lie, my butt was puckering when I saw that wood bouncing and binding.
Very nice end product and enjoyable video. Thanks for posting.
Wow. Always wondered what 'firewood' would look like if somebody turned it. I guess I know now. Absolutely beautiful. And to think that it could have been ash by now. Amazing.
Thanks very much! 😊
A beautiful piece, as always. Happy New Year and stay safe.
The bowl is just gorgeous. It takes a real artist to see beauty hidden inside firewood. I love it.
Love Ashley ( Subscribers) work.
Me too!
Absolutely beautiful! You've discovered my secret, aside from two details, I buy my firewood by the cord and I don't have a planer...yet. Otherwise, this is the same process I use to make everything that comes off my lathe, it's incredibly rewarding to scroll through the pictures afterward and see the evolution of a slab of firewood to an elegant family heirloom. Thank you!
Well said, it's very rewarding on many levels!
THE BOWL TURNED OUT GREAT .THANKS FOR THE TIPS FROM DOUG
I always see those bundles at stores and wonder what could be in them...now I know!😃 What a beauty!👍🏻👍🏻
Lots of potential in them hidden inside between the cracks and splits and torn grain, lol. Thank you!
WOW! This is beautiful. I love how the whiter wood shines like pearl. Amazing.
Something about his voice is just so soothing
Good idea! It turned out very beautiful! Good luck!
Thank you! 😊
The segmented firewood bowl is incredible! Great work and vision, Rod. Thank you for showing the bowls I made and the encouraging comments!
I'd love to see an old piece of broken wood furniture become a beautiful bowl or vase, gaining new life as a new thing.
I like that idea. I'll keep an eye open for something with potential.
Salvation army or any second hand store. Plenty of cheap worn out furniture pieces.
Outstanding!! I really love the bowl. Great job Brother.
Inspiring! I’m off to the hardware store now . many many thanks 🙏
Thanks very much!
Oh my gosh. That bowl is absolutely beautiful!
I love how you made something truly beautiful, out of something mediocre.
0:55 my friend, this is not how to play Jenga! :) keep it up, I enjoy your videos.
Beautiful work Rod, even the roughest of exteriors has the potential for beauty. Absolutely love this video, and that's one of my favorite pieces. The world could learn something from that piece, all different types, styles, and colors, make the most beautiful bowls.
Jimmy
Rod, I've got about 4 large drawers full of scrap pieces of wood, I'm starting to use them for segmented vases, bowls and goblets. That bowl is beautiful, great job as always.
Wow, that’s beautiful. Great job.
I never would have thought of that. My son is an artist and musician. He also teaches art at a local elementary school.Love that guy and you remind me of him.Impressive bowl Rod. Thanks.
Stunning ... just shows what can be achieved.. thanks for sharing
I am in love with this bowl! Gorgeous!
That is amazing especially where you got the wood. Turning firewood into art.
We have a saying around here to describe a master crafter/artist: 'Give him/her a handful of ashes and he/she will turn it into gold'.
Well, that's exactly what's happening here! Thank you for sharing!
Wow, you have to love people that can turn something of nearly no value into a piece of art. Nice work Rod..
That is very nice. I am just starting to get into turning bowls and such. I have been making powder horns for a good many years now ready to learn something new.
Thank you! The powder horns sound interesting
Oh my goodness! STUNNING! ❤
Absolutely gorgeous Rod take care my friend and god bless

Absolutely beautiful! I always love the shimmer of the grain when turning on the stand. That oak piece made a perfect base. Great job Ron!
Outstanding and very beautiful God Bless
Thank you very much and the same to you!
Beautiful as always. This is one of my favorite pieces.
Rod you never cease to amaze me awesome work love the chatoyant in the wood
Thank you so much 😀
Very cool firewood bowl!!!
Reminds me of the scrapwood challenge... :)
Thanks for sharing. I turned my first segmented bowl the other day lol. Full View and Like always
Like the bowl...I was thinking about getting some firewood for the same purpose...thanks for the confidence.
Looks great! Would it be possible to get a bit more detail on your home made segment length chart?
Thank you! I made it with a compass, protractor, and ruler. I have one made up for a few different segment counts, they're a great quick reference tool. The circumference lines are spaced at 1/2 inches apart, but the segment length can be measured at any point for the desired overlap. I laminated them with packing tape, and they've lasted for many years.
Beautiful bowl from firewood, literally. Thanks for sharing.
New subscriber here.. Thanks for the excellent video! You've given me some ideas!
Once again, I absolutely love how you think! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it doesn't have to be the most beautiful expensive pieces of wood that hold that beauty. Very pretty bowl!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
You are so talented. Absolutely love watching you work. It's mesmerizing.
I think it’s beautiful!!! and to show you my appreciation I was watching all commercials to end))))
Improvise, adapt and overcome, beautiful bowl, Semper Fi Brother.
Very beautiful Rod, I wasn't expecting that different colours, but it looks pretty amazing!
Pure simple silent
Exotic
Simple peaceful bowl
That's good
WOW!!! Out of a bundle of fire wood?!?! Amazing, shimmering bowl sir! Thank you for making this video.
Firewood... it's not just for camping anymore. Looks great. Semper Fi, Rod!
Fantastic.
Great work.
Absolutely delightful.
Beautiful bowl, Top! You never know what you'll find in firewood.
Rod, Awesome lookin bowl, firewood to a Gorgeous looking bowl, great content as always, thanks for sharing your video.!.!.!.
You’re amazing. I think what you make is always beautiful. Things I would proudly display at my house.
Beautiful Bowl. Amazing where you can find some lumber to create with.
Bloody beautiful, mate. Gorgeous chatoyance in the wood and lovely form in the bowl shape. Well done! Cheers.
@RHumphrey I tried looking for David Menderski and couldn't find anything. Do you have a link for his UA-cam channel? Thanks.
Like it no. Absolutely freaking LOVE it. The shimmer mesmerizes me. You should cut the kindling that has cool features up and put in resin for another bowl. 💜💜💜💜💜
That's really beautiful. You'd never believe it was a bundle of firewood. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Rod,
Beautiful bowl, love your segment work!
Thanks for sharing, stay safe and God Bless!
/Lars
First time watching and loved the idea and the clear simplicity of your instructions. Look forward to watching more. Thank you 😊
Beautiful workmanship Rod. I've been gone for quite a while and miss seeing your creativeness. This bowl is beautiful. It reminds how GOD makes everything beautiful in HIS time.
Hopefully this will be my new future, inspired by you, awesome work that you do will be cherished, thankyou for the inspiration, stay safe, stay turning,
Amazing. Attach to a 2x4 to run though table saw for odd shapes. Works pretty good
Very nice. Always fun to take something unlikely, apply some creativity, and make beauty!
That bowl is just beautiful and the concept of just a bunch of firewood reminds me of camping.
It's amazing, I haven't turned a bowl yet. But I will soon, maybe in about a month. But for now I'll just keep watching when I can.
patricia here--- ohhhh turned out nice!!!! oooooooooh hows bout a bark bowl??maybe a segmented bowl? alternate wood and its bark in reson??? hmmmmm
Well done, Ron! The chatoyancy is fantastic. And, well done making the value of that firewood so much higher.
Its beautiful!! I rarely comment, but I enjoy your channel so much. And thank you for serving.
Great job / Thanks for sharing. What are your thoughts about moisture content. I have 20 cord of wood to turn and mostly only turn segmented bowls. Thanks again.
i like doing segmented work but my favorite now is a board to a bowl, thanks,BM,aka, woodbutcher
Beautiful! Just as I have come to expect from you! Where do you get your signature medallions?
Great looking bowl!! I'll never look at firewood the same way. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful turn Rod.....the grains and contrast show up really nice considering you rescued it from it being firewood! Curious though....is that stock oak and how dry was it? Nice investment in thought, design, and execution. Best wishes and good health my friend.
Wow! A small batch of firewood in a net with a label. That's a shocker. Hope they don't charge for a hologram and unique certificate for it :) We're buying firewood in trucks here in Russia. Is retail wood trading so strictly regulated in the US that it's reasonable to purchase firewood in such small packaged batches with supposedly enormous value-added?
Great project Rod I still struggle with the math for lengths of the segments How'd you make your chart?
Beautiful bowl brother!!
I have bought a bundle of Mesquite, and used it in projects also.
Mr Humphrey, besides your incredible turning talent, you have such a beautiful and calm voice. You should make a channel only reading some stories for kids. I´m sure they´re gonna love.
Cheers from BR.
Wow great work Rod, that's great advice I'll be sure to remember. Thank you
Very beautiful bowl. Who would have imagined that those pieces of firewood had such a brilliant shine hiding inside. Great projects sent in by subscribers. Take care. God bless.
Great bowl, Rod. The chatoyance is really nice, too. You said that the wood was nothing special. That was true until you finished with it. Now it's something very special. Stay safe and healthy.
Bill
Firewoodart i'ld say, well made!! Thanks for sharing.
Turned out beautiful. How many objects could you get from a single bundle? I’ve thought about that source for snowmen or other small end grain turnings.
Mike
Now you done it. That firewood salesman is going to start labeling those bundles as segmented wood bowl kits and jack the price up. Nice job. Beautiful bowl as always.
