Thanks for the video Peggy. What a lovely bowl. I started my 5th bowl and decided to use Purple Heart. I was glad to hear it is indeed a dense wood. You do make it look easy, it’s not. And also I get to dig a screw out to tomorrow too.

Purple heart is absolutely beautiful, one of my favourite wood to work with. Putting it in sunlight with some heat will just make the purple even more vibrant as well. It browns when worked.

I have never heard of this wood and I’m amazed how beautiful it is!! You did a great job of showing the true beauty in this piece. I truly appreciate your dedication to this work; dictating each move you made helped me understand what was happening. I’m not a woodturner yet I love to view this craft! Great job! Thank you!!

Purple heart is a tough wood to work with, but the color of the wood makes it very special. If you heat it with a torch or hot air gun it will get that deep purple look. I have turned it and I also like using it as a contrasting wood with maple in making dovetail boxes. I always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing Peggy.

It brilliant to be back with you again Peggy this is a very beautiful bowl, just a comment on what you were saying about purple heart being a little brown, Gord Rock said on one of his videos that if you set the purple heart in sunshine for a week or so before turning it the sun really brings the purple back out again. I love the grain and colours in the bowl thanks for sharing 👍👍👍

That is beautiful Peggy, and you are right Purple Heart can be a challenge to turn. I would much rather turn that than Bloodwood though. My husband glued up a Bloodwood and Ambrosia Maple blank for me. It killed my tools but man did it turn out pretty. Have to put it back on the lathe though I'm not happy with it. Couldn't get the depth inside I wanted. Need to get myself some carbide tools for that rock hard wood. My gouges took a beating. Happy Mothers Day!

Nice wood turning, Peggy. Suggestion: Drill holes for your face plate screws before installing them. This will help eliminate broken screws; particularly on hard dense woods. Use a little bees wax or paraffin on the screws before putting them in. This will help them go in easier.

Beautiful bowl!! Love the color. On most hardwoods, I pre drill a hole(smaller than the screw your using) and sometimes I put wax on the screws. Easy going in and easy coming out.

When I broke a screw off in a blank, I used a plug cutter to cut around the broken screw, then snapped the plug /w screw out. Great job on turning your sweater into a custom purple heart turning apron. Put the bowl in the sun for a while, it will turn very purple. Thanks for sharing.

Nice turn, especially with all the broken bits to contend with. I have a motorcycling shirt called FREEZE OUT which i wore while turning one cold day and wood chips are now married to that shirt. I figure if i ever get back into resin i will encase it in resin and turn it, lol. Good to see your back up and running.

That’s a very nice bowl. 👍 I can’t say that I like turning Purpleheart heart very much, but when I do turn it, no matter what I make, it sales fast. I just turned a cigar ashtray last week and sold it the day after I finished it. I did buy carbide tools to turn Purpleheart because, it took forever to turn my first piece.
There are two things that will cause Purpleheart to turn purple, heat and UV light. I normally just expose the piece to sun light for a couple of hours for a couple of days to get it to turn purple, then I apply the finish.
Oh, if you put a small piece of Purpleheart in a jar with some denatured alcohol, the alcohol will turn purple after a few days.

Some of us live by for the videos you post. To miss a week with the excuse of: “I had some home improvement projects to work on.” You know the old saying: “Excuses are like buttholes, everyone has one!” I love purple heart. Don’t know what it is but it’s beautiful! If you can expose a half inch of the broken screw trying using a cordless or corded reversible drill motor, tighten the chuck as tight as possible, reverse the drill and back the broken screw out. The other thing is use a pneumatic die grinder or a DREMEL tool to remove the material around the broken screw. Might save you from having to extract a broken drill on top of all the other broken stuff in your piece.

Hi Peggy,, When I turned purple heart and before finish, I take a torch and go over the entire surface, and that will turn the wood a deeper purple in color and it makes a big difference. Ron, Chief USCG RET

A technique I use to remove a broken screw is to use a parting tool and turn a grove on both sides of the screw. I then break off the wood around the screw and like you I then use vise-grips to remove the screw. I broke two screws in the last piece of Purple Heart I turned. Great piece, very pretty.

Miss Peggy, Purple heart is very beautiful to make things with. What i found was the cost is high for these blanks and boards when I turn them in the lathe all those shavings go to the floor put a pain in my chest. I decided to invest in a bowl saver to not waist such a beautiful wood.
