  • It's time for a LIVE Rush reaction: 2112 from December 10, 1976 at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ: Overture, The Temples of Syrinx, Discovery, Presentation, Soliloquy, Grand Finale. To improve the sound quality during post-production, we have mixed in some of the All the World's a Stage performance from the same tour.
This is our first time listening to this song live. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.
    00:00 - Introduction
    01:20 - Overture
05:48 - The Temples of Syrinx
    08:02 - Discovery
    08:55 - Presentation
    12:31 - Soliloquy
    15:03 - Grand Finale

Please give a shout out to Kozmo. That's me. (Yes, I subscribed!) I was part of the restoration team of that historic drumkit once owned and used by Neil Peart, affectionately known as Chromey.

I grew up in NJ. My senior year in high school, November 1986, I saw Metallica here on their first headlining tour, and the 9th show with Jason Newstead. So I was there almost exactly ten years later. Given I was 7 in '76. I was straight out in the balcony. I only went there once, but I liked it.

A former co-worker of mine, told me that she and her brother went to see Uriah Heep. She was still in high school and her brother was in college. The night started with this three man group named Rush. She told me that after their relatively short set, the rest of the night, while still good, was a bit of a let down. After that, they kept an eye open for any rumors of Rush coming to town again.

I had platform shoes and bell bottom pants back then, everyone did in high school. My hair was not as long as theirs, but long enough. I first heard this album in 1976 and was amazed. They’ve been my favorite band since then. I’ve seen them 4 times in Chicago, International Amphitheater 2X, Rosemont Horizon, & United Center. Also Alpine Valley Music Theater. Never disappointed. 🤘❤️ 💔RIP Neil Peart

Great reaction! And like others have said, watch the 1997 live version. Due to time constraints in their early touring days, they never played 2112 in its entirety. Starting in '97 (and until their final tour in 2015), they began playing 3 hour shows, so they were able to finally play the entire 2112 suite for its 20th anniversary.

In December 1976 I walked into my home town record store armed with a record token. I started browsing through Queen albums and then noticed a record in the "R" section. It was a plain blue cover with the picture of a drum set on a plinth on a stage in the centre. As an aspiring drummer, I bought the album without hearing it based solely on that picture. The album was called "All The Worlds A Stage" - the live album that was spawned by this gig and featured 2112 almost exactly as you just watched. From the opening bars of "Bastille Day" I was hooked. A couple of weeks later it was Christmas and armed with another record token I bought "2112". Almost 50 years later and I am still hooked. Viva Rush!

The first time, I had never heard them before but I went to pretty much any concert that came to town. Just an incredible performance. It’s mind blowing to me that these guys can come up with these arrangements and actually remember the 8 billion changes in one song. And performing live just as tight and maybe even better than the studio recording. Zeppelin who influenced Rush quite a bit never sounded like their studio work live. Which was fine that was their thing and what made them magical. But it doesn’t bother me in the least that Rush stuck to their album versions because they were so freaking great at it!… and yeah while it’s great that the 20th anniversary tour allowed them to play the whole thing, sorry there’s just nothing like hearing the original in ‘76. 20 years of singing like that Geddy didn’t sound remotely the same. Can’t blame him. He’s trying his best but there’s nothing like hearing him do it live like he did on the album!… you guys absolutely picked THE live version to watch! IMHO.

They first played 2112 in its entirety on The Test for Echo tour in the mid-90s. It was an experience for sure but the angst of twenty years earlier was missing. They figured the lead singer and guitarist were the ones people would want to see and the few shots they'd give you of drummers was to throw them a bone. They all really rocked this performance! Too bad Alex wasn't able to get a new, tuned guitar to him, perhaps between TOS and Presentation. He kept trying to tune it but it was still messy throughout the rest of the song. That's why they decided to splice-in the "All the World's a Stage" version, here and there, to improve the sound. That's a cool video but the original is hard to watch because of Alex's issues. Neil Peart didn’t like the Limelight, thats why there are many shots of him. Listen to Limelight and you'll understand.

Neil would have as Alex was Russian Orthodox and Geddy was raised with Judiasm

LOL - Alex and Neil were likely raised in Christian houses, Alex more likely to be Catholic, but Geddy is Jewish as his parents were holocaust survivors.

Just come across you two like the reaction to Rush, the music of my youth as I am 70 now, I am English and English prog rock is one of my favourites so I would like to introduce you to Porcupine Tree I always advice anyone interested to listen/watch them live, they are brilliant musicians and the song writing and arrangements are stunning here is the link for Arriving Somewhere Not Here live in Tilberg ua-cam.com/video/W3lsqUqGTzM/v-deo.html

"Show the drummer", amen, most of the 70s live concert video sucks, it's always in the dark, and you usually can't see most of the people on stage.

Where did you find a stereo recording? I've only heard this video in mono.

I spliced in some audio (post-production) from _All the World's a Stage_ to improve the sound in some parts.

They may have been the "headliner" actually. They played with Foghat and Montrose.

    • @itsmedrooms6071

@@MusicforBusyPeople It seemed like they weren’t headlining because Geddy told the crowd that they didn’t have much time, something a headlining act wouldn’t normally say. It’s a great video though, thank you.

@@MusicforBusyPeopleThe billing that I called up on Google showed; Foghat/Rush/Montrose.
So it seems that Rush probably had to yield the stage to Foghat for the last act.

Not the best camera men in '76 or even after that. Being a drummer, I wanted to see Neil. It took a while before they included him in the videos.

Fantastic pick. Rush fans never recommend this song because it’s too heavy for them. They have been emasculated by decades of soft, feminized music, such as Time stand still.

Neil read a lot of Ayan Rand this is a parody of the book Anthem. Note, Anthem records is the company Rush stated.
