I used to own Bullmastiffs. I was walking down the side of our mountain dirt rd with two of them and my chihauhua after a hike. All off leash. I saw a hawk following us so I picked up my chi. When I got home I got a call from my neighbor up the mountain who saw THREE coyotes stalking us in his sight (rifle) ready to shoot if they attacked us. Stay strapped and safe. Know your surroundings. And NO I wouldnt let my dogs go after them if I could stop it. Coyotes works in teams. Theyre VERY clever..

I have so much interaction with coyotes where I currently live you wouldn't believe it. I never really had to (dogs had to start it basically) when I was upstate rural, but now I'm exactly on the edge of the suburb/farm divide and they are legion. First month in our house my Giant Schnauzer jacked a pack up in my back yard when I let him out at night, he was 100% the bad guy lol. I ran after and got there but all I could do was listen while this huge dog fight happened all around me, blind as a bat because there was no moon. The dog won hard, which was followed by years of only having to hear them at the neighbors. Unfortunately he passed, and I'm left with a pack of female poodles, which meant that they coyotes started coming closer again, even sounding off on me and my dogs in our own yard, until I got really involved. A male standard poodle is MUCH more likely in my experience to chase down, fight and kill coyotes than a big guardian breed btw, the issue here is purely gender and pee-mail related.
I'm not going to live scared because of possible dog fights, we have weekly black bear visits too and screw those guys btw, so I just go in with the dogs. There's literally nothing in the woods that wants any of that smoke. There is no stalking and no lurking about once the animals see that the 200lb gorilla is running right at them...that's what the dog barks mean. The Coyotes are back to avoiding our yard, and my garbage goes outside whenever I feel like it, while my neighbors do morning-of and have constant bear visitors anyway. Literally carrying air horns outside twice a week to put bags in cans. Have some damn species pride people.
