    I love the lick. It sounds like you are starting on the upbeat with the metronome at 160. Am I wrong? Can you explain the function of F natural in the key of G in this context? Thanks again!

    • @aaronjaxonguitar
      @aaronjaxonguitar  9 місяців тому +6

      So, that lick starts right on the downbeat. I may have been rushing it a bit but the note come in on the downbeat. The F note give this lick a classic bluegrass major/minor blues scale feel which is what we do a lot of in this style. A song may be in G major but a lot of these lead lines contain ideas from major/minor blues scales as well as major scale and mixolydian modes. That’s beyond the scope of this video but I hope I’ve answered your question

  • @MrEjowens21
    @MrEjowens21 6 місяців тому +1

    Nice Exercise. With the metronome going, how do i determine how many beets per minute I am playing the lick? Is it one note per click?

    • @aaronjaxonguitar

      Hey thank you! These licks are best played as 16th notes so 4 beats per click

    Aaron... This is a BRILLIANT technique for helping people increase up/down picking speed!!! I've been a finger picker for so many years; before that a bass player; before that a guitar "strummer". But one day, I was introduced to Tony Rice. WOW! So I've been trying to add this technique to compliment my finger picking. But I feel like a retarded ostrich, just starting out. So I've been viewing several videos, and tonight I saw yours. But something told me that THIS is a genuinely good technique to work on. Well... I better get started!! God Bless you... Best regards, Dennis

    Aaron, Do you do online lessons? I've heard enough of you to realize you are an amazing performer. But sometimes, the most amazing artists and performers are not very good teachers... But in my opinion, I see you as a very good teacher.... I used to take lessons from a Tony McManus, a wonderful performer and teacher, and a master of technique in DADGAD. I consider him a dear friend and mentor, but I had to stop lessons about 6 months ago, for a number of reasons. I came across Tony Rice videos about a few weeks ago, and was HOOKED !! I am wondering if you only do "face to face" lessons, or do you give video lessons? I know they can be challenging due to time zone differences and audio setup issues.... Let me know if possible...

    You played it 3 times through in the Breaking Point Tempo section. Is it syncopated? Asking because those three examples weren't very in time if they weren't syncopated (slowed playback down to 50% to be sure). I'm very envious of how cleanly you play, but you mentioned playing it in time and that doesn't appear to be the case at 160. Would love to hear you play it at 130-140.

    • @aaronjaxonguitar
      @aaronjaxonguitar  3 місяці тому +1

      No it isn’t syncopated. Yes, I got ahead of the metronome at 160 so my timing wasn’t perfect by any means. I’m just trying to show people how I would practice it. Part of that includes recording yourself and listening back to hear where you are slowing down/speeding up. In my case, I just decided to do it with close to 20k views on it 😂😂. Again though, if anything I was getting ahead of the metronome at 160 so I needed to slow down. But overall, I thought it was pretty solid and I’m very self critical so I’ll go with my own judgment on this

    On wich count do you start playing this lick?

    • @aaronjaxonguitar
      @aaronjaxonguitar  5 місяців тому

      Right on the downbeat. Beat 1. I may have been rushing it in a few places as I have a tendency to play very “on top of the beat” but all these licks and their variations start right on the down beat

    so i been pickin near as long as you been breathing, but that don't mean i'm any good. my ? is, if i'm gonna work on a lick for a year or, more to the point, 3K reps, why wouldn't i pick one that actually sounds good?! not to be a dik, but the one u teach here just plays like a chromatic/scale run up to the last meas. which has some, shall we say, 'borrowed' appeal. otherwise, your disciplined approach using metronome is, imo, spot on, well thought out and well explained. just trying to offer some balanced insights from experience cuz that's about all us old-timers got left to offer! i like new-grass less every time i hear it-the sound of showing off. there's a balance; thoughtful, consonant fills versus 'look at what i can do', or playin so fast you can't even hear the BS. music is not a sport, imo. serve the song.
