Hi Sean another good topic👍. Most of the nursery growers here in US use cocopeat and slow release fertilizer on almost all houseplants even succulents🤔 so they dont have to keep watering the plants.(Base on plants I purchased) And they are always on plastic pots, and they do fairly well on warmer months but detrimental on plants during winters. So I find using different soil mix on different species of plants save my collections. (Just common plants🤗)
Yeap the nurseries there seems to grow everything in a massive scale and efficiency is their top priority. Most plants can adapt to the potting mix in which they were propagated into. But they can do even better when given potting mix that resemble closely their natural habitat.
Yayeee. Its actually better to make your own. You can feel the texture and also with experience you can adjust accordingly. Everyones homes and watering style is different 😌
Yayyyyyy! I was so anxious waiting for the last chapter of your potting mix series! You’ve been missed Sean!!! Thanks again for these fantastic lessons 🤩
Gia....again. "this is why we can't have nice things..." 😂 Kidding aside in really appreciate your informative vlogs...just finished watching the watering vid...and I ordered my water meter since I'm always questioning the h2o frequency.
Hi Sean! I was just wondering if you have any tips on storing the potting mix. I usually buy and mix only when I need to repot bec when I do store some, it tends to either dry out or get too soggy.
My plants are now mad at me coz they heard your info on plant soil. They say i give them crappy soil hahahaha! Here i go again watching this like a series. Love your vids
Appreciate your educational video on potting mixes. May I know what is old soil which is sold in my local nursery? Your jungle floor mix includes dried bamboo leaves, I can't find it, what other leaves can I use? Thanks in advance.
Hello, the idea of dried bamboo leaves is to aerate the soil and create a light airy texture. Perlite is a good alternative. Some people even use 50% peat and 50% perlite with great success. 😀
Hi Sean, new subscriber. Love your wonderful information! Is there a substitute for the burnt rice hulls? Can’t find them here is the US. I ordered regular rice hulls but then you remarked they will hold too much water. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Hello, try horticultural charcoal thats ground up really small. 🤓 its the same idea of fast draining carbonized material that cuts down incidents of rot
what ratio did you use for your slow release fertiliser? And will it be harmful for herb because we do use them as food. Thanks a lot and have a great day!
I have never measured ratios before… usually go by feeling 😅 fertilizers are important for herbs, they are quite heavy feeders. Chemicals are harmless for us but it may not contain all the micro nutrients. Compost or animal waste fertilizer remains the best ones for nutrients.
I'm surprised you don't have a succulent potting mix for sansevarias, peperomias or other succulents, it seems like a logical extension of the other 3 you have.
I’ve never measured my mixes, I use my feeling and its different each time. Also you can use perlite amount based on how often you want to water the plant. I use lots of perlite because I water them daily, and it also rains almost daily here. Mature ferns can get very thirsty too
Halo Sean.. I often see from the leaves there is water on the edge of it. Is that mean I over water them? So I need several days to wait until no more water come from the leave then I can water them? Thank you
Its a process called guttation and its normal for plants do shed excess water. And yes often times its a sign of overwatering but often times its normal as well. The only way to know if you have overwatered is if you stick a moisture meter in the soil before watering 😌
Pothos have a lot of roots, general may be better. Unless you plan to grow one vine up a pole or wall to encourage massive leaves, in that case I recommend the aroid potting mix so they can develop strong gripping roots.
I have never measured, and its different each time i mix it 😅 you can adjust based on how often you are willing to water the plant and how much you want it to dry out in between watering.
Garden Compost or in some places stabilized manure will do too. Otherwise you can also go with the synthetic route of just adding slow release fertilizers
After a while you just get a feeling which ones need watering and which one needs to be left alone. I walk around the house with a hose or a pressure spray for 2-3 hours daily.
Hit it with fertilizer with slightly higher phosphorus as it encourages bloom. If its in low light, try to give it a bit more light. Peace lilies flower when they reach maturity (about 1-2 years old maybe) so make sure your plant is old enough 😌
Please tell us you removed the caterpillar from the leaf, I can't be the only one that's worried! On that topic, how do you actually deal with caterpillars of that variety? Are they a frequent houseplant pest?
I have a question (not about the soil) but since I saw your Indoor Ficus Elastica I just want to ask this: Do you have problems with their root? since my Ficus broke the bottom of my plastic pots and the root are thick and I don't know if it's okay to cut the excess root. (Already upgrade the pot to bigger size but it keep happening)
Whoa that must be one happy ficus! Plastic pots are hard to be broken haha. If you want to keep their size small go ahead and cut the roots. And keep them pot bound. But if you want it to get bigger consider upsizing the pot
Sean i just love listening to you talk something therapeutic about it!!!
Thank you 😌
Thanks for this 3rd video on general potting mix...learnt a lot after watching all 3...and a little more confident.
Boston fern lovely plants
Enjoyed seeing your lush pretty healthy plants thank you for sharing

Hi Sean! I was just wondering if you have any tips on storing the potting mix. I usually buy and mix only when I need to repot bec when I do store some, it tends to either dry out or get too soggy.
I use them up so fast that they are fine in storage. I put in plastic containers with a lid 😀

Hi Sean... Which soil that you recommend for growing rosemary / basil / thyme?
Maybe someday can you do a video on growing herbs indoor and outdoor? 🤓
General potting mix. They like airy soil, and watered very frequently if given full sun. They need direct sunlight or full sun to survive
Thank you for the video. Now I know why my spider plants dropped leaves...😝

Thank you for this kind reply. I will try this!
Hey Sean when mixing potting soil do you add potting soil from the bag also?
I dont use soil at all for my mixes.
Ok thank you ☺️
I want to try this mix just for the maidenhair fern.... I adore them..... they hate me!!!
Im trying them in my forest floor mix too to see which one fares better. Ill do a vlog on this species soon as I found the best conditions
Hi Sean, thanks for your videos n sharing.
You mentioned that you do sell your soil mixed. I'm fm Singapore ...how do I order them online?
Hello we cannot shop organic material internationally unfortunately 🥲

Hi 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Please do a video on ferns
How do you manage to check every single plant everyday? whether they need water or not? that's so amazing
I put everything in fast draining potting mix so I can safely water them everyday 😀
@@onlyplants that's so smart .thanks
You can wax the inside of a terracotta pot so that it does not dry out quickly.
I kinda need them to dry out quickly as I am a chronic overwaterer 😅
I'm surprised you don't have a succulent potting mix for sansevarias, peperomias or other succulents, it seems like a logical extension of the other 3 you have.
I do 😀 its in a video titled “moms succulent bowl”
I can find burn rice haul in US. Is hericultural charcoal ok?
Yeppp those work just as well.

How often do you water your basil in general potting mix?
Every morning, they are really really thirsty plants. If its a very sunny and hot day with no cloud cover, twice a day watering is necessary.
Please tell us you removed the caterpillar from the leaf, I can't be the only one that's worried!

I leave them on unless its on an expensive plant. They have as much right to live undisturbed as we do. 😌
