My older plants are in terracotta, because 20 years ago it was more cheap. The younger or with less than 15 years are in big or medium plastic or cement pots. I don't see any difference, but once I've tried to move an older to a plastic pot and she was not doing well, so I had to take her back to the terracotta pot. I don't buy too much, cause I don't have money lol So I rescue plants from lots of different places, - ppl don't care much about plants, they just put them off to garbages and streets - so, I take them and bring home and make sure that they will get their best, as long as I can. Ty for the information, buddy. (=
Yeah it definitely has made a huge difference to me using them indoors especially for growing Calatheas and Stromanthes. Can't remember the last time I had a root rot problem.
I prefer terracotta pots any day; they look so much more pleasing in my opinion, and worth the hassle of extra watering and cost. I don't agree it is 'ridiculous' to put a terracotta pot inside a cachet pot. I use a lot of plain terracotta pots for planting in and sometimes place them inside a cachet pot for a change, or decoration, or to protect the surface the pot stands on. Terracotta feels a natural extension to the soil the plant is in and I prefer managing my plants in them. A great video, thank you.
I repotted my snake plants and have watered the ones in terra cotta 2-3 times a week and never need to water the ones in plastic. Now I know why thanks! I knew I liked terra cotta for a reason!
What a great video! Much better than TV! Everything you say about your amazing plants and pots is interesting. Here in UK we are being encouraged to re-use any garden plastic instead of sending it to landfill. A big move to recyle the plastic too. However most recycling plants cannot recognise black plastic so that goes to landfill for ever. The industry is using different colours so the pots are recognised and can be recyled. Also they are using different material for the pots e.g. bamboo, already recycled plastic and coir products. These will obviously break down after a few years but are much better for the planet! I love your collection of pots! Good frostproof terracotta is very expensive here in England so I have to put my empty ones in the shed or garage for the winter. Outside ones with plants in can be bubbled wrapped or similar. One last thing - to make sure the inner pot doesn't touch the bottom of its cachepot, I stand it on plastic milk bottle tops. Saves it standing in water.
Actually, it is not surprising that you have reached 30K. Your videos are very well done and very helpful. Many UA-cam video makers talk so much about themselves but you talk as a teacher.
I do favour terracotta pots....saves me from drowning my plants. I noticed after you mentioned it that both my Alocasias are still in their plastic nursery pots, and doing well over winter. So ill make sure I keep them in the plastic in the future repots. Love watching ur videos!
My goodness... Your plant collection is awesome. So much information gathered. Even though this video is 3 years old, it's still relevant in 2024. Hugs from Malaysia 🌿💚
OMG I loved the cheat sheet at 11:40 on which plants specifically enjoy Terra Cotta vs Plastic pots. That was super duper helpful for me thank you for such an amazing, extensive video explaining things so well! Great work on this video!
I been itching to go pot shopping since last week, but I still need to recover from this virus. I💗 love, love, love terracotta pots🤗. This video makes me heal faster😂. Stay Safe Everyone😷
holy moly shawn!!! I am constantly amazed by your passion for plants and I am glad to see you sharing your tips online. In terms of buying plant pots in a sustainable way, reuse of the pots you currently have is the best option, and buying from local artists/sellers is good to reduce unnecessary shipping costs. By buying nice pots you really like, you'll make them last longer, and that includes plastic pots, even though they're not great for the planet. If a plastic pot breaks, be sure to recycle it; if a terracotta pot breaks, use the shards as drainage or use them at the bottom of pots to stop soil from washing out when you repot. Super great work, as always!!! Best wishes.
I love this discussion and I have noticed my house plant experience has improved based on my knowledge of which pot I use with which plant. When I was a "beginner" I learned through trial and error with over watering and how fast a plant will dry out depending on the pot they are in. I experienced a lot of root rot because of this (ugh). Because of this I think it is best for beginners to use terra cotta especially if they are "helicopter plant parent" like me! Thank you Sean this video was great!
We have the same problem here in New Zealand. Terracotta pots are hard to find. Its to do with shipping and covid. I hope things are sorted out soon as I've had to stop buying plants. I guess thats a good thing too. Love your variety, especially the pots with faces.
15:27 I am also in a warm humid environment, and when I buy new plants, I usually need to downsize the pot, swap the peat moss for an airy mix, and swap the plastic pot for teracotta. Otherwise they stay wet for weeks to months (when kept indoors in medium light).
@@onlyplants They may have done it to make a profit (4 inch plant in a 6 inch pot is more expensive). But with an unusually cloudy summer (Aussie east coast), they might have just expected higher light levels and bigger plantlings. I'm grateful that we have nice plants at the shops, and that people like you are sharing your knowledge and educating us in a fun way :)
I just discovered you and have spent a lovely long afternoon enjoying your comedy, your expertise, and mostly your awesome passion for plants. I grow Hoyas orchids and alocasias in Canada, it is a challenge as the indoor heating is hard on my babies, but I never stop growing. I love just absolutely love your cache and terracotta pots. Keep your videos coming, your are such a bright star, rock star!
Your terracotta pot collection is amazing. More pots = more plants. Glad to know that you acquired a few pots from Thailand. Chatuchak has a lot of varieties.
Wow all the information. I am so happy I listened cause I've lost my succulents now I know why. I just thought the pots are just for looks. Thanks you are awesome! 🤗
Great videos as always... The excess salts flowing through a terracotta pot and drying on the outside of it is a good thing instead of building up in the soil of a plastic pot. Also, having to water more frequently is good because you're supplying more oxygen to the roots. Cuts down on anaerobic activity in the bottom of the pot.
Your plant collection is amazing! I live in a semi-arid climate so terracotta is reserved for my succulent collection and plastic or ceramic for everything else. Thanks for the great advice and sharing of your knowledge.
It looks like your home is a pot store! I enjoyed watching this video . Thank for making my mind clear of the difference between plastic and clay pots, and the plants that thrive them best.
I love terracota pots too but when I use them indoors they tend to get some white furry stuff (mold?..) which I don’t like, so what I do is put plastic pots inside terracota pots - this way I get the look but not the mess. Great video as always Sean! I too wondered how you could spend 45 minutes talking about pots but as always you kept it interesting from start to end 🤩
Finally! I didn't even know that a 45 minutes pot video was necessary, but thank goodness! Would you make a full sun hanging/trailing plants? I've been searching for some videos and it's a struggle. Congrats on the 30k subscribers!
Loved the video. So many terracotta pots with cute designs . We only have the standard shape here. Your sheep pot was the most cutest of all. As usual enjoyed all the commentary on screen . Thank you .
I clean terracotta pots with scrubber and vinegar. For calathia my potting mix differ, use soil, compost and more cocopeat so I do not water daily. I also find plastic pots more helpful for repotting as they can be squeezed on sides and lightweight. After seeing your videos I do mist my calathias every morning and they❤️ it.
I usually put the plastic nursery pots inside decorative pots, either terracotta or ceramic, so they're easier to take out to water. Can't wait for Spring in the UK.
