Just watching this video again for no reason at all. I never subscribed to the idea that it was about his relationship with Torts, he said it wasn’t, Torts said it wasn’t, there was reporting. But after watching that Jets-Knights series, I’ve finally changed my mind. It was absolutely the relationship with Torts. He doesn’t like it when anyone pushes him, he doesn’t like playing defense, and when he gets called out he sulks. Bones couldn’t do anything with him either. Just such a shame.
Umm? Dubois asked for a trade before he signed the contract. He signed it at a cheap price for a faster and easier trade. Why people don't understand that? 😅
He's only hurting himself. Does he really think that a contending team is gonna want to trade for a guy to pay him 5 million a year and if things don't work out exactly how he wants he's just going to stop playing? I've seen that in basketball and baseball.....but never in hockey
It won't hurt him at all. Ryan Johansen did almost the same thing and quit trying and it got him traded to Nashville, luckily for us, we got Seth Jones in return.
Don't ever call John Tortorella sane on the internet, because the internet is forever. Just because he wasn't egregiously wrong this time, does not mean this comment will age well. Speaking as a NYR fan who used to like Torts.
Benched him the whole game is overreacted. That was a planned action from Torto before even the game started. It's obvisious Torto said something like "If you are not doing enough, I will bench you. I said it in front of the media. I will do it. Dare me now." And Dubois was "Challenge accepted".
@@orestes0883 id like torts in ottawa. He's a good coach problem is hos coaching style has a shelf life and only works for so long before the team stops responding. Harden up get pisses off at the coach and prove him wrong, get tough, and fight. A guy like domi, scott stevens etc would throw guys like him around in practice. His teammates need to get mad at him and either snub him or fight him during practice like they use to.
Hey Steve, just wanted to say thanks for your take here. I’ve seen a lot of stuff just blasting Torts without taking much into consideration (for example not knowing why Dubois wants out and just guessing) but this was a very fair and balanced take. Big thanks from a CBJ fan.
PLD has responsibility - to his coaches, his teammates, and himself - to give a damn while he is on the ice wearing that sweater. He needs to be putting in effort on every shift. He said, in multiple interviews, that while he is here, he will be putting forth effort to help the team win. Last night was not that.
And until that TB game, i was under the impression he was giving his best efforts, then he got benched vs Detroit, and now im guessing he's being petty.
@@SleepyScylla I get the guy being frustrated (obviously I can't speak to the what or why of anything), but...hes currently paid by CBJ. He gets benched in one game? He's not the only player to have that happen. Sure, to him, he's probably justified in being mad about it, but even for him, not caring doesn't make sense. If he asked for a trade- what impression does his behavior give the other teams if things get tough? I'm just saying, perfect scenario, he gets traded and can actually be happy playing somewhere, but his actions aren't exactly selling much.
@@rae.elaine92 my thoughts exactly. If you're wanting a trade you put all your effort into upping your game to show prospective teams what they'd be getting in value. They're gonna see you coasting and short-shifting cos you don't care then you won't get any interested parties. Also if they see this as your response to being benched, regardless of the reason behind it, you'll be seen as a potential off-ice problem the teams don't want.
First of all, this isn't over one horrible shift, it's been building since the season started. His effort just hasn't been there, and after the crap he pulled last night, he's luck Torts didn't shoot him out of the cannon. Secondly, if he's going to play like that, he's better off not even being on the ice. He's a liability. Give his spot to someone who's going to put in the effort and, I don't know, actually be effective.
When you teach/coach with old school approach and attitude only the strongest individuals will thrive and understand the ultimate goal behind all the "pushing" they had to take. Which nowadays cant/wont happen in most jobs including professional sports sadly.
I’m a CBJ fan Dubois used to be my favorite player. I just don’t understand why he wouldn’t show a little bit of effort? The better he plays now, the quicker he’ll get traded. Jarmo is a good GM for a small market team like us, he isn’t going to give PLD away for nothing. At this point his trade value is already as low as its ever been, why not send him down to the minors?
There's a clip of an old Miami Dolphins game where they're running a play, trick play thing, and their quarterback at the time was a man named Jay Cutler. They start the play and he doesn't move and doesn't look like he cares at all. Just stands there. Only similar one I can think of for baseball is an older one. Years ago the Tampa Bay Rays were playing the Baltimore Orioles. Their center fielder was one of the Upton brothers (I believe BJ Upton) and the Orioles Adam Jones hit the ball into center. BJ Upton decided to go for a leisurely jog after the ball instead of hustling after the ball and ended up giving Adam Jones and inside the park homerun.
From what I have heard, that was Cutler's job on the play. As a QB split at WR during a trick play going away from him, the only reasonable way he can hurt this play is if he gets injured. As a result, if what I heard then is accurate, Cutler was told to just stand there. Yes, it looked ridiculous. However, it makes logical sense.
as a Canadiens fan, I agree. The season is still young tho but I like how they play. I would't risk to trade the futur of the franchise like a 1st round pick or a Suzuki/KK for a guy who doesn't honor his contract because he's upset. I mean look at Duchene. His last moments with the Avs, he at least showed up every game, every week and still playing good and trying to win. That's not what I see with Dubois and that's what worries me the most.
Tortorella wanted to humiliate his top player in front of the whole world. That's on him. When he did the same thing last year, Dubois scored a hat trick the game after and notice how Tortorella got all the credit from that. I wouldn't want to give credit to that jerk again if I were Dubois. Well done, Dubois. Come to Montreal.
Speaking as a Lightning fan, I’m glad he decided to hot dog it out there, but he’s hurting his trade value by showing that if he doesn’t get what he wants, he’s going to give minimal effort
PLD is a joke What insult to the Columbus blue jackets to sign a 10 M contract then ask for a trade. Then ask, I want to go to a big market team (insulting the whole fan base of Columbus Blue Jackets in the process) and then not caring if he plays... he shouldn’t get paid if he doesn’t want to play... how bout that ?
Dubois has ruined his trade value, humiliated the organization, been absolutely selfish at the expense of his teammates, served as a distraction no matter what the team says, hung everyone out to dry to have his passive aggressive tantrum, acted completely unprofessional and unbecoming of an NHL player, tarnished his own reputation, and within a matter of two weeks completely turned an entire fan base unequivocally against him. Also Tortorella needs to take a chill pill sometimes.
Steve just to correct you on one thing, apparently PLD requested a trade sometime during the negotiations, before he signed the contract. He only signed it to make it easier for Jarmo to trade him
2:54 - My mind jumps to the fall of 2004 when Vince Carter wanted the Raptors to trade him, during a game against Seattle he (allegedly) went over to the SuperSonics bench during a late-game timeout and _told them what play his Raptors were running._ That's not just no effort, that's straight up sabotaging your own team so they'll trade you.

Just scratch him and put in Gerbe or someone who wants to be there. As a player, I would be pissed that my teammate is acting like this, so they may be shutting him out as well. Scratch him, make him see as little NHL ice as possible
He signed that contract because he had no other options. He was an RFA without arbitration rights. He could have held out for an offer sheet I guess, but with a flat cap, who had money to give him? Plus, with the kind of deal he wanted, it would have taken at minimum 2 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd, possibly 4 #1s, on top of paying him ~$10M per. At that point, it's probably cheaper to trade for him. Also, side note, has anyone actually voluntarily stayed in Columbus ever? Carter: traded, Nash: traded, Saad: traded, Panarin: walks, Duchene: walks, Bobrovsky: walks, and now Dubios demands a trade. As for everyone siting Albert Haynesworth, he didn't stop trying until after he got the HUGE contract he wanted.
This must have aged well. Going to make another trashing my Winnipeg Jets for their trade to get him in exchange for unsniping Laine? lol (who I think will do much better under Torts, but not as good as he could, due to Columbus having terrible centres)
He signed the contract, for a decent price for what he has been in his career so far, to up his trade value, to get out of Columbus. Problem is, hes been "simulating to next game" ever since.

This game single handedly cost the Blue Jackets a first round pick in whatever trade is coming soon
Yep, If I'm a GM looking to get him, I'm sending low ball offers and waiting for this situation to implode
I wouldn’t go that far, it’s only one game. But ya if this continues for a few more games I think you’re right
In 5 games he's had 7 SOG and scored once. That's a couple games of not trying already. Meanwhile, if we look at other youngsters apparently wanting a trade, Patrik Laine played one game before injury and scored an assist and two goals, including the OT winner.
If I'm a GM, absolutely i'm lowballing on PLD. This sort of play kills his trade value, and also puts a lot of risk into the deal for anyone picking him up.
If i'm Columbus... idk. I think healthy scratch for a week, then get him back on the ice and tell him that until he picks up his effort again, i'm not even considering a trade.
Or maybe I tell him to go see a therapist. Idk, but the effort level looks almost like someone who's severely depressed.
@@reaganharder1480 If im CBJ im not gonna trade him now. Only when his man child of a brain realizes its for his own good to do his job his getting paid from to raise his stock in other teams eyes. If he doesnt just bench him until half a year from his contract expiry date and then trade. Surely they wont accept any lowballing trades from playoff teams. Only a rebuilder who is willing to pay at least 1/3 of his value before the contract expires will be the destination for sure.
@@barsk1 the problem with that is that now you have $5M a year going to a guy who's not even playing. According to capfriendly, they've got roughly $1.8M of cap space, which would mean that PLD would have to be replaced by someone who costs 1.8M or less. That's 3rd liner sort of money. I get the sentiment of forcing him to stay until he shows up, but in terms of building a winning team i kinda doubt that's the best move.
I'm pretty sure if I was Torts, you kick Dubois out of the locker room. Just healthy scratch him and say "Just stay at home until we figure something out". He just doesn't want to be there, and you can let his lack of effort infect the rest of the team.
Yes we need this
I would agree, but you also have to keep him playing. No team wants a guy that has been sitting and not game ready. Pld is not helping his stock tho with the lack luster play.
I totally agree with you! i would send him home and just scratch him for the whole season and trade him next draft/offseason when teams have more cap
@Jay Sandhu torts has been Columbus’s best coach, leading to several consecutive playoff spots and their first playoff round victory this is on the players, not him
@Jay Sandhu torts is probably fired after this season, but pld is not being a leader or a good teammate. Both have to leave the organization. But torts is an amazing coach. Players both hate and love him, but hes able to squeeze what ever he can out of his team.
Albert Haynesworth for a guy that the team that signed him almost immediately regretted it.
Huge NFL Junkie here, Alber Haynesworth didn't give lack of effort like that. The only time I've seen that in the NFL is the Pro Bowl.

@@barsk1 that would be really stupid
Well now it’s Winnipeg’s job to do that
i think it's a damn shame that he's doing this, because us columbus fans really really like the guy. he's kept the jackets just one winger away from being a very good team. but i think that it's clear that 1) he doesn't like Torts, which is pretty understandable, and 2) thinks he's being undervalued bc Bjorkstrand got signed for 5y 27.4 mil recently. he probably feels slighted, and is perhaps trying to slight the team by getting out asap and for lower values assets. it's frustrating to be in the metro for so long and to have come close to finishing out cinderella playoff runs, and i'm sure he thinks he can do better. just leaves the team, which has already weathered enough freakin storms, a bit stranded
Guy signs a 10M DOLLAR DEAL AND THEN WANTS TO BE TRADED.

@Fuh Q lol, ok

Someone should fight him in practice.
Was wondering if Torts was nuts benching him so early. After seeing how DuBois played, Torts is perfectly sane. Wow!
Don't ever call John Tortorella sane on the internet, because the internet is forever. Just because he wasn't egregiously wrong this time, does not mean this comment will age well. Speaking as a NYR fan who used to like Torts.
@@orestes0883 Yeah, he was pretty crazy when he was with the Rangers but great entertainment :D
I'm sure it was entertaining for all Devils' fans, for us not so much.
I'd also like to point out pld acts like the typical person from his generation dont want to work, entitled, cant handle someone who speaks their mind, needs a quiet room to cry in.
Dubois should be loaned to the KHL by the Jackets just to teach this kid some humility
That’s still a great league he’d probably do great over there but it would never happen
Even Carter at least played before he was traded

My friend, I know you dislike Boston Hockey but Boston Basketball, Kyrie gave no love to the Celtics when we gave up at the end of the season

At least Matt Duchene played instead of pulling a DuBois when he wanted out of the Avs.

He's a hardass, but he seems to be a fair coach. If you show up and actually try, he'll give you a chance.
When you teach/coach with old school approach and attitude only the strongest individuals will thrive and understand the ultimate goal behind all the "pushing" they had to take. Which nowadays cant/wont happen in most jobs including professional sports sadly.
@Shawn Berthelette i honestly appreciate you writing all that but im also glad that im from finland not the us
I’m a CBJ fan Dubois used to be my favorite player.
It probably couldn't go to the minors due his contact...now he can skate for a big city of the size of Toledo LoL
3:15 Jack Rodwell, Sunderland FC. The guy spent years on a divison 1 contract, pretending to be injured, while his team got relegated twice....
his stick was on the ice for 4 seconds that whole shift
As a mtl fan... i am not happy about how Dubois is handeling himself... would certainly not strip my team to acquire him!
Well said.
as a Canadiens fan, I agree.
I agree. With that attitude, he's barely worth a 1st
Would make a very good fit with JDrouin, no? Seems like similar personalities...
At least like when JD was in Tampa, lol!
At this rate he’ll be traded as a cap dump to New Jersey
That could potientally be great for Cbj if Zacha is involved in trade with a expiring contract like Gusev
Lol.. Yeah no. We don't need him in New Jersey; we're perfectly fine as we are. Our only issue is trying to dump PK Subban's ass.

Neil O’Donnell Super Bowl 30 is some piss poor effort
He didn't bring his Refs that was in the 2002 Browns wildcard game

What insult to the Columbus blue jackets to sign a 10 M contract then ask for a trade. Then ask, I want to go to a big market team (insulting the whole fan base of Columbus Blue Jackets in the process) and then not caring if he plays... he shouldn’t get paid if he doesn’t want to play... how bout that ?
He wanted a big city market.. now he skates for a city the size of Toledo LoL
He only signed it to make it easier for Jarmo to trade him
Best thing that ever happened to Columbus!!!!!!!!!!
He wanted a big city market...now he play for a city about the same size as Circleville,Oh
