    As a Kings fan, I’m really not sure what the plan was when signing PLD. Vilardi is a better power forward than Dubois is and it clearly showed this season on the Jets. I know they were expecting a breakout season with Dubois but 8.5m x 8 for a player with a career high of 63pts is crazy to me. That’s not even factoring in a high depth player and good penalty killer like Iafallo and a pick on the side for the cherry on top. What a joke of a signing

      You're welcome. He has more value in WPG, but Vilardi was always injured and wasn't an important piece to our winning seasons, Idc for Iafallo bc we got Moore, he plays the same game. Kupari was just trash. So that's okay, I never understood the "who won the trade" debate when both teams performed statistically the same. The only bad thing I seem to find is his contract.

    Kings fan here - jumping on the Dallas bandwagon for the rest of the playoffs. For Dubois though, in terms of realistic ways to handle the situation, my vote would be to move him to wing and play him on the first line. It's tough because he hasn't really earned that role (so what kind of message are you sending to your team - especially the young players).. But if you're going to pay a guy like a 1st line player you may as well deploy him like a 1st line player and try to get as much as you can out of him. Personally, I'd move Byfield back to center and up to the top line to create a 1st line of PLD - Byfield - Kempe. I legitimately think those 3 could form a formidable top line especially as Byfield steps into his prime.

    • @thebigpicture2032
      @thebigpicture2032 4 місяці тому

      That may work but would take buy in from LA’s actual top players but it may make the locker room situation worse. If the locker room and his personality/character are the issue though, maybe a top line showcasing for a trade would be a solution. Maybe Montreal still wants him as they like acquiring French Canadian players ever since they failed to draft Denis Savard first overall in 1980.

I'd hardly consider that a 'punishment' - even if he has PLD on his left wing. But I agree, it isn't exactly perfect/ideal... At this point it's just about trying to get as much as physically possible out of PLD - playing with Byfield and Kempe should do that.

Shameful...what a puke, everybody is trying so hard, and you have this distraction in the room. 1-He needs a performance coach.(Armia in Montreal had success with one) 2-They need to trade him for another gross under achiever, but the problem is that no wants his arrogance and privilege in the locker room or on the ice. 3-Could they transfer his contract to a European Team. 4-They could sue him for breach of contract. One of the things trending, in the Pittsburgh area, is for the Pens to trade Tristan Jarry to the Kings, because of how well Ned played this season, and the prospect of Joel Blomqvist winning a spot on the NHL club, next season.
    It would make sense, for both teams, because it would give LA a damn solid goaltender who needs to play behind a solid defense, for a little while, to regain his confidence. He finished the season tied for the lead in Shutouts, but had some really rough games, mostly due to Pens' defensive breakdowns.

    Kings fan of 31 years here (since I was 5 years old)... we definitely got ourselves in a pickle with this contact... no ifs ands or buts....
    But! I think there are ways PLD can be good. We need to redefine his roll for the team. He's not a top playmaker, he's not a 2 way player (terrible on defense), and he's not a good center (terrible on the dot).
    My suggestion would be to put him on wing with Danault and Moore. Danault and Moore are both great 2 way players. PLD is a pretty big dude, have him take on the roll of a Tkachuk or a Marchand. Lots of hitting, messing with the other team, and goal scoring. Don't rely on him to become a Kopi replacement... he will never be that player.
    We have to assume that he won't want his legacy to be "the guy who stole the bag and played like trash for 8 years"... if you give him room to develop in the right role, I think he can contribute to the team.
    Here's to hoping though... cause the trade still infuriates me to this day.

    I heard Elliot Friedman discuss on #32T one of the challenges of PLD's buyout is that he turns 26 this june. That takes his buyout from 1/3 to 2/3 as per Cap Friendly!!! LAK will have to hold the bag on this one.

    I wasn't a fan of the trade. We gave up too much for a guy with his reputation. Then he has a pooper of a season, and was MIA in the playoffs. He gets this next season to sell us. I'm hoping we hire a coach that develops the offensive talent on this team. The Kings are way too deep with offensive talent, including PLD. I also wouldn't be surprised if the front office got a cleaning. But I think they also get one more year. If PLD lays another egg and the head coach hire stinks. The front office, all of them, including Luc, are gone.

      I think Blake needs to be gone yesterday, for this trade and signing alone. With PLD’s track record, see how he does in his first season with your team on his existing deal before handing out a long term, cap-busting contract

    Look, as someone who watched all 5 games of this series from start to finish, Dubois was HEAVILY shadowed by Ryan McLeod and Sam Carrick/Derek Ryan. They did a good job minimizing his impact in the games, to the point where yeah, he did look invisible at points. I remember that he was brought it to give LA a chance to win the matchup vs McDavid and Draisil as those guys would be matched up with one of Kopitar/Danault.

    There are those who think that Pierre Luc Dubois is the worst contract in the entire NHL. They must have forgotten that Jonathan Huberdeau has a 8 year contract with the Flames for $10,500,000/yr that lasts until 2031, and he only gets ~10 more points in the regular season than Pierre Luc Dubois.

After all, it can't be easy to try and adjust to a new environment, new teammates, and a new system, ALL while being under the spotlight for a huge contract and supposed toxicity. That kind of pressure has got to be insane.

    Since a lot of people are demanding for him to be bought out, capfriendly shows that if a buyout were to happen, the Kings would be dealing with a fluctuating dead cap hit until the end of the 2037-38 season. As bad as Dubois has been for LA, I would think the team would try to find a way to make him work on the wing to help alleviate their center logjam rather than to deal with a cap penalty for that long. Trading him to a bottom feeder where he would actually be a top 6 center is almost automatically out of the question because of his no movement clause.

    • @_Angry_Potato_
      @_Angry_Potato_ 4 місяці тому

      I think the buyout talk is because he’s turning 26 soon. A buyout for a player 26 or over is 2/3 their salary, but for 25 and younger it’s only 1/3. So if you think a buyout is inevitable, now is the time to do it.
      I agree though, it’s way too long term. Even with the cap going up, it’s still 14 years.

      Imagine no Dubois, add Iafallo and Villardi, plus a possible decent trade deadline acquisition considering the $$ saved, take away those 3 (2, if Dubois isn’t there for the “hold”) game deciding non calls and this series is worst case scenario 3-2 Edmonton (LA still prob loses) or best case scenario 3-2 LA (LA actually has a slight chance at round 2) And the future suddenly looks much brighter…

    Pay a guy top 6 money then play him in the bottom 6, yea doesn't make sense. Good players shine with good line mates, good minutes, PP time. They get touches on the puck, their confidence starts rolling, they get in a groove. It's not this guys fault. Plus first years of big contracts are hard mentally, once that dust settles he'll do better.

    The trade itself was an obvious fleece from the get go and the Kings really have just panicked I think, dumping assets to get PLD and then lavishing a crazy contract on him. WHy are they panicking? Because they look down the prospect pool and there is little if anything that is likely to be better than PLD in the next few years. this is a team that is going to struggle for offense and so really they better be praying PLD turns it around. COming out of their rebuild it already looks like a bust and while they might continue to make the playoffs, they will be mired in irrelevance as the core ages.

      funny enough, although humilitiating it's actually not that bad financially. he's 25 at the moment which has his buyout at 1/3 of the value (which is about $16M over 14 years, although the cap hit is higher), but if you do it after he turns 26 the cost becomes 2/3.) I really don't think they buy him out either but it's still something to think about...

    This isn't a charity. If you can buy him out at a 1/3rd contract penalty then you buy him out. You got hosed on a trade and you got hosed on a contract. You have a chance to correct your mistake and pay less dearly than you could be. Take your medicine and move on. If he gets picked up and does well then good for him. WPG isn't out of the doghouse here. I think they went in the wrong direction with this trade. WPG definitely should have went full rebuild and garnered draft picks for PLD. The Schieffele contract and hellbyuck contract are also terrible. Don't believe me? just look what happened against colorado in the playoffs and you have zero room to add and get better capwise.

    Didn't the Kings also have to make cap space by getting rid of Durzi and Petersen (Walker was also included a sweetener)? To make PLD's contract work they had to give up Durzi, Petersen, Walker, Iafallo, and Vilardi. They were better off keeping all those players and just looking for an upgrade in goal. At the very least trade Petersen/Walker to free up cap space for a good goalie.
