As a flames fan, this is probably the best outcome we could've had for Markstrom. He's been on a rough steady decline and made it clear he wanted out of Calgary, and we now have 2 first round picks in 2024, 2025 & 2026, as well as a ton of 2nd & 3rd round. Not to mention, we have Vladar & Wolf who are both still developing, and alongside a ton of futures, it looks really good overall. Not a full blown rebuild as much as it is a retool, but we have so many young talented players that have the potential to become superstars in the future, and a couple veterans to help guide them (and hopefully provide on the scoresheet next season). My biggest worry is that those veterans will seek exits if the next season or two go poorly. Losing potentially Mangiapane, Coleman & Andersson would effectively put us into the position of the devils when they had their amazing season, where the team is full of younger players and hoping for a miraculous season leading to playoffs.
@@BillyBoi911 Durzi was traded to the Yotes for a 2nd rounder. That said, yes the PLD trade was terrible asset management, but getting rid of him and freeing up cap space (and a roster spot) is a solid move for LA, and I'm happy it was done.
Alcoholism rates just spiked in Washington with this radioactive news of PLD moving to town. The upside is how much beer sales will increase over the next decade to help stomach the games. All breweries must target the hurting people of Washington with commercials selling images of happy drunks. Cheers, mates! 🍻
ngl all this tells me is people dont know what the Caps specialties w/ player development are (older projects like Strome/Connelly), don't understand how little Kuemper did for us compared to a player who MIGHT turn it around and become a 1c (and he'll have as much TOI and as little pressure as he wants). Also very clearly they don't understand why Wilson is signed to that contract, nor the like.....extremely obvious plan Washington is doing?
"oh but you have him for seven years its so blah blah womp womp" oh no we'll have two heavy contracts during the post ovi rebuild? when we're going to suck?? oh no.
Wilson is the next captain of the Capitals, that is why he has that contract, he will be there to guide younger players through the rebuilding phase. Same reason Scott Laughton is still a Flyer.

Not sure i agree with all the Washington hate for this trade. They get rid of the smoldering remains of darcy kemper (also on a garbage contract) and acquire a young talented top 6 forward for basically nothing from a trade value perspective. Hes definitely a pain in the ass but if he gets his shit in line he could greatly help this team who made the playoffs with a terrible scoring offense last year. Washington also is gonna have a ton of money coming off the books in the next 2 years with oshie and Backstrom retiring so they can handle PDLs bad deal rather easily
waiving Goody sucks but necessary. he is the kind of guy you need to win a cup because he and guys like him might not get you to the playoffs, but guys like him are what win you playoffs. if Mika had his mentality, he would be the elite 1C we all want him to be. he was an absolute trooper for us and i appreciate all his efforts and i hope he has a good next chapter, he deserves it.
kings fan here. After thinking we were going to be stuck with PLD for 8 years....man im relieved....I really dont know if Kuemper is the answer to our goal tending issues but at least PLD isnt our problem anymore
I think a Caps rebuild was unavoidable at this point, and they can afford PLD’s contract because they have nothing to lose. They have nothing in their system and they need NHL caliber players. PLD is going to fill a spot while they draft and develop their players.
Imo it sorta makes sense. Wsh isn't gonna tank w/Ovie. So do u just settle for a bad but not awful team or take a swing. If he sucks nothing changes. If he plays like he can then they have a low-end 1C to play W/Ovien & attempt to get back in the playoffs.
I can't believe one down season on a shit team is enough for people to completely write off Dubois. Sure, he hasn't quite lived up to the superstar hype, but he's still put up decent numbers for a 25 year old scoring 0.66 PPG up to this point. The Caps dumped an expired goalie who's obviously been in decline the past couple of seasons and for 3 million more they get a young 3rd overall pick who has the potential to be a 70-80 point player on the right team. With the salary cap going up next season too, this won't hurt the Caps as much as it would've in previous seasons, so as far as I'm concerned, they 100% won this trade.
As a Pens fan, this is great- not only do we not have to worry about getting him, but now the Craps have yet another defensive liability- beautiful! XD
I think this is more about giving Kuemper a chance to be a starter somewhere rather than a backup here, he's too good to be a backup, we (caps) just didn't have a good group in front of him. Caps are overdue for a rebuild but they can't do that until Ovi retires, whether he breaks the record or not. This is a team that's throwing everything at that record and nothing else.
I don`t know what the Caps smoke, but that must be good shit. They pay Ovi, Dubois and Wilson almost 25m - and the first 2 play no D. Kuemper was on a bad contract, but 3 years at 5m is something else as 8,5m for 7 years.
The trade is fine for both team LA gets a goalie that they needed and Wash gets PLD a center to replace Backstrom for good (with this acquisition it means hes done for good) instead of paying Kemper to be a backup goalie. Its a VERY good trade for both teams.
Rangers got lucky with Goodrow. If they can move Trouba in a similar trade they could be in serious contention to go and sign someone like Stamkos or Reinhart.
I'm not sure the Sharks claiming Goodrow was the entire move. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few days there's a trade like pick 42 for pick 30 or Kakko for future considerations to "complete the trade."
@@FAKEMD I'm well aware of that. What I'm suggesting is that Goodrow's NTC blocked him from coming to SJ so he was put on waivers (where Sharks have the first right to claim) and there's a handshake deal that in the next few days the Sharks will get something from the Rangers.
I don't know why so many people glance over the fact in trading Markstrom now, the Flames have freed themselves from having to pay a massive 2.5M$ signing Bonus which de facto falls on the Devils when it kicks in this summer. Trading him after that would have equated to retaining 2.5M$, they only retain 1.875 in the end. Well done Mr Conroy. (Plus that Kevin Bahl project, with Calgary's development savoir-faire on the aspects he precisely need to work on, could lead to some pretty good things down the line.)
3:05 I'm looking for the part in the stats that would make anyone think this guy is really as good as everyone talks about. Those are second line numbers on a mid team.
LA can get a solid forward for that 3.25 they have room for without PLD, I was hoping he'd mesh well with the team as an LA fan, but he really felt like Kucherov at the all-star game, except it was playing like that in games that mattered. Especially the series against Edmonton.
As a cap fan I don't hate the trade at all. Caps had no 1st line center since Bäckström and Kuzy are gone. Idk about his work ethics but since Ovi is lazy too maybe they find some kind of weird chemistry. I bet PDL will have +70 point season or he is traded before Xmas. Also what's wrong with Wilson contract? He is the backbone of Caps.
It kind of seemed like Kuemper's eye injury was something he never fully recovered from and was becoming exacerbated last season after initially recovering after it happened. I really hope he bounces back just for his own sake, but I think he's going to regress even further into no-longer-NHL-playable territory.
For LA it just didn't work out with PLD getting out from under that $8.5 mil for the next 7 years is a benefit and if Kuemper doesn't work out a $2.5+ mil buyout over 4 years is way more palatable than whatever it would have been over 14 years
It's a questionable move at best for the Caps. I could see it if they were an up and coming team with plenty of young talent, it might just be what finally inspired PLD and brought the best out of him...but that sure ain't the Caps. I dunno, maybe it's part of the plan to start racking up high draft pick and start the rebuild while Ovi chases his record in the meantime. Doesn't help PLD though, I foresee a buyout or him requesting a trade.
I think it's a good 'bad move' for the Caps. They get a center to aid Ovechkin with Gretzky's record. After that they'll have a guy who doesn't care about winning or losing that much, so a perfect 1st line center for a tanking team. With a realistic timeline for a full rebuild, there won't be more than a couple years left in his contract when the Caps might actually need the cap space. At that point his NTC will apply to only 10 teams and even a buyout wouldn't be particularly bad anymore.
Buyout's bad pretty much no matter when it happens unless the Oilers lose the next game and he's bought out immediately after he's eligible (a few hours later or if it takes 7 games he turns 26 so the buyout jumps from 1/3 to 2/3). No matter which year he's bought out, the 2/3 buyout price in each season (assuming he's bought out prior to that point) is about 2.7M in 24-25 and 25-26, 3.7M in 26-27, 4.7M in 27-28, 28-29, and 29-30, 3.7M in 30-31, and 2M a year for each year remaining on the contract at the time of the buyout (if he's bought out with 1 year left it'd be the ~2M for just the 31-32 season, if there are two years left it'd be for 31-32 and 32-33, etc). The price per season does fluctuate by about 1-200k but the number itself is close enough compared to the total cap.
@@jonmendelson1104 I mean, as far as buyouts go it could still be a lot worse. Saving 4 and 5 million at the expense of having 2 more years of 2M in dead cap won't be that big of a deal, especially with the cap rising to perhaps over 100M in the meantime. Of course there would probably still be better options to available in terms of trades. But even in the worst case scenario that there isn't, the buyout option mitigates some of the risk for those final years if the Caps are in a position to really need some of that cap space to make a push.
@@romaliop I was mostly just clarifying that a buyout in the last few years has minimal change on the cost beyond the shorter duration. Aside from that, if they can find a team to take him 50% retained that'd be better. 50% retention would just be a flat 4.25M until the contract ends without the lingering 2M per season tacked on after it expires.
If you think 31 c before humidity is bad, don’t go to Georgia. I live in northern US, and it frequently gets over 32 c with 80-90% humidity in the summer
The Rangers do have to pay something for getting rid of goodrow the waiver claim was the only way to get goodrow to sjs. A bigger more favourable trade for SJS is coming from New York
DK is toast. The Caps were on the hook for 5.2m for a backup goalie. They have 3 goalie prospects, they won't miss DK. PLD is a HUGE risk. If you subtract DK, PLD is a net increase of 3.3m for 3 years. Still not worth last years version. The back half of this contract is scary. The Caps have Stromme & Milano that were scrap heap pickups. I guess their going for a triple.
Yea the PLD trade sucks ass but so did PLD and kings now have a little bit more cap space so they upgrade from a pile of shit to just a couple of turds

I like the move by the caps.. they need centers bad
We're celebrating in the streets here in LA lmao
Celebrating with your GM who lost Valardi, Durzi, Iafallo for nothing
@@BillyBoi911surprisingly, the pure joy of shedding PL outweighs the disappointment of what we gave up to acquire him…for now.
As a flames fan I like the trade. Markstrom is definitely very good but so is vladar, and we need to build up more of dustin wolf as well because once he's accustomed to the nhl he's gonna be alslmost as good as kipper
Im so fucking hyped on the kid. Trade makes sense to me, frees up 6mil in cap space, solid picks and a depth D who could really d well. Rebuild, retool, whatever were in it.
As long as we pick right in the draft and play our cards right with goaltending and defense. Honestly we could be a legit threat next year
Agreed, and the young defenseman should do well, since it seems Calgary's does well developing d-men.
@@DJFVH22 We have 15 picks in the first three rounds for the next three years. 6 in the first. Gonna be a minute til they develop
Probably right, but I'm hoping
For the Americans on here, the 31 degrees outside temps he mentioned is 87 degrees to us Americans
Dude it was 95 up here in Buff before the humidity, I was dying. It’s been in the 90s all week
@@BrotherFinn882 Then you better not move to OKC then. The humidity here in the summer is far worse!!!!! It's like the seventh level of hell during the summer at times.
Yeah that sounded funny.
that's not hot at all lol
i was 110 in Las Vegas last week, how the hell do we have a Ice hockey team haha
As an LA fan, I was initially excited about getting Dubois, but after some time... less so. It seems he's waiting to get engaged. Wish him the best on the Caps, but honestly glad for the trade. Not so thrilled that The Kings went back to the Chevorlet logo though!
Washington also is gonna have a ton of money coming off the books in the next 2 years with oshie and Backstrom retiring so they can handle PDLs bad deal rather easily
when you were saying it was 31 degrees (which is 87 in f) it was 37 in chicago lmao
waiving Goody sucks but necessary. he is the kind of guy you need to win a cup because he and guys like him might not get you to the playoffs, but guys like him are what win you playoffs. if Mika had his mentality, he would be the elite 1C we all want him to be. he was an absolute trooper for us and i appreciate all his efforts and i hope he has a good next chapter, he deserves it.
kings fan here.
Dubois will be the 1C and help Ovi break the goals record. WSH needs a rebuild regardless so little risk to them.
Who in their right mind takes that PLD player or contract?
Looks like Adam Sandler
I have a feeling we are going to witness some head scratching trades from this point forward until next October
As a Pens fan, this is great- not only do we not have to worry about getting him, but now the Craps have yet another defensive liability- beautiful! XD
They're thinking, "Well at least he'll help Ovechkin break the record"
Ovi and Carlson expire in 2 years. This cap hit won't be a problem.
@@XaviRonaldo0 Every long term contract that's 3+M too high will eventually become a problem. 7 years is way too long to be stuck with PLD and Wilson.
Not to mention Mcdavid has more postseason points than Dubois regular season.
Maybe since he knows that this is 100% his last chance Dubois will step up? (I'm grasping for anything rn)
A 15 team no trade clause is pretty insane
The trade is fine for both team LA gets a goalie that they needed and Wash gets PLD a center to replace Backstrom for good (with this acquisition it means hes done for good) instead of paying Kemper to be a backup goalie. Its a VERY good trade for both teams.
31C… you in Ontario? That’s what we had as well in SW
as a kings fan, I could not be more happy about this news
There was some spec that Gibson was possibly going to LA and Im happy that's a no go now
Rangers got lucky with Goodrow. If they can move Trouba in a similar trade they could be in serious contention to go and sign someone like Stamkos or Reinhart.
dont think it will happen sadly
@@EckHockey Drury is gonna be aggressive I think. He knows the core has 1-3 years left to contend.
I'm not sure the Sharks claiming Goodrow was the entire move. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few days there's a trade like pick 42 for pick 30 or Kakko for future considerations to "complete the trade."
@@jonmendelson1104 it was not a trade, SJ just claimed him
@@FAKEMD I'm well aware of that. What I'm suggesting is that Goodrow's NTC blocked him from coming to SJ so he was put on waivers (where Sharks have the first right to claim) and there's a handshake deal that in the next few days the Sharks will get something from the Rangers.
Goodrow comin back home to SJS. Can't say I saw that one coming.
Here in Edmonton, we have frost warnings...
31 only? Went up to almost 35 before humidex in Quebec City last week.
3:05 I'm looking for the part in the stats that would make anyone think this guy is really as good as everyone talks about. Those are second line numbers on a mid team.
Hey Washington, while you're at it with bad deals, do you guys want Darnell Nurse too?
Seth Jones incoming...?
LA can get a solid forward for that 3.25 they have room for without PLD, I was hoping he'd mesh well with the team as an LA fan, but he really felt like Kucherov at the all-star game, except it was playing like that in games that mattered. Especially the series against Edmonton.
Hello, Eck! Love your content
Rob Blake just became GM of the year. What were the caps thinking?
31 degrees going into July? Holy shit that must be some northern canada shit. It was like 90 here today in northern US
Celsius bro, the not-dumb unit for temperature
Your ignorance is showing. 🤦🏻
Every other country besides the USA measures temperature in Celsius. 🤣
The fear of Ovi might get him to play up to his potential
It kind of seemed like Kuemper's eye injury was something he never fully recovered from and was becoming exacerbated last season after initially recovering after it happened. I really hope he bounces back just for his own sake, but I think he's going to regress even further into no-longer-NHL-playable territory.
For LA it just didn't work out with PLD getting out from under that $8.5 mil for the next 7 years is a benefit and if Kuemper doesn't work out a $2.5+ mil buyout over 4 years is way more palatable than whatever it would have been over 14 years
I just watched a triple bill of Victorian crime & P.L.D was the lethal poison in all 3, man the toxicity levels was incredible!!!
I’m kind of afraid of what that ownership-vetoed trade was that originally would have sent Markstrom to NJ.
That PLD trade just seems like the weirdest trade
So LA basically traded all those players to Winnipeg to get Darcy Kemper, as an oilers fan, love it
SJS should be weaponizing cap space. Getting picks for cap space etc. They can't be as meh about cap space as this vid implies.
Ayyyy my home state team, and 2nd fav team actualy got a good goalie and actualy have a chance to win the cup!!
Why you gotta do elite sniper Tom Wilson like that.
31 degrees??? Where do you live, Antarctica??
Yea the PLD trade sucks ass but so did PLD and kings now have a little bit more cap space so they upgrade from a pile of shit to just a couple of turds
And the turds may not even actually be turds. But the shit is definitely shit.
31 degrees sounds cold as fuck lol
Eco yesterday in Nova Scotia it was like the third hottest place for a little bit
How anyone would want PLD is beyond me.
those are some big moves
In my opinion it was good for the caps to get pld so they could give ovi some talent to play with for the record
I hope Wash picking up PLD was just a setup for another trade, maybe they'll send him to MTL.
For me LA won by a landslide. Solid number 1 that has already won a cup! LA are getting closer to being contenders! I could also be wrong, but thats my view on the matter!
so san jose takes a guy they know doesn't want to be there?
A guy on a bad contract that would be a buyout. Somehow i have a feeling they did the Rangers a favor there and will get paid back somehow.
Grier is “relationship building.”
PLD doesn’t show up for most games, trade way better than buyout. Can’t believe that’s all they got for Markstrom.
Pld is the nhl's version of "i can fix her"
How does Maclellan have a job after the Mantha trade let alone this one.
Also, from Nova Scotia, we were at 45°
Caps might buy him out. I heard the money was the same to buy him out or What’s owed to Kuemper.
The cap hit is low to buy him out.
Kings just made a mistake with PLD and now got rid of it...for WPG this PLD trade saga was good.
