My wife tried to watch these shows with me but quickly lost interest because she didn't know their back stories. She noticed that the common theme for all of them was lazy writing and made it rely on new viewers to do the research; catering to a small demographic. She felt the shows weren't interesting enough to do further research.

Lazy writing is a huge issue. Maybe they aren't paying their writers enough or giving them enough time. But Ashoka was terribly written. Their motives made no sense, the unfleshed out side 'bad guys' made no sense, they shuffled the main plot around a few times and there was ABSOLUTELY NO STAKES. How come Sabine never got in trouble? How come Ezra didn't question further? How did they basically end up in the same spot as they started? Clone Wars and Rebels are masterpieces in comparison. Sorry to steal your comment to rant but yikes it was so disappointing.

I hear nothing but good stuff about Loki and loved it myself. You don't need any homework to watch it, the whole plot is a 'prep' for the next movies but the true focus of the story is the characters and their place in the system, how they respond to it, the relationships between them etc. Disney probably didn't expect it to do well at all, just be a bit of a 'milk this popular character' project as a vehicle to explain the upcoming Kang story. But we got so much more, and you don't even need to know who Loki is. In fact apart from Loki and Kang, every other character in that show is brand new to us. And there's a lot of characters, and I cared about all of them. To me, if disney don't at least give us a TVA show to continue those characters that'll be the last scrap of evidence I need that they're ruining things on purpose.

Not just Disney, but many times now the stories that are being told are trying to set up the next story, without wrapping up their own story. I loved Moon Knight, because it was a self contained story. The first two season of The Mandalorian were great as its own corner of the universe, and then it got super messy. because it wanted to be interconnected.
Studio Ghibli creates great standalone stories. I can pick and choose what movie I want to watch and when I want to watch it. They aren't all tied together, and I can enjoy each one for what they are.

I agree with you that the content hasn’t been focused enough on the characters. I’d also add that it hasn’t focused enough on the world of the story. Instead, as you said, they’ve focused on the plot of the phase/saga, and that’s no replacement for character development or world building.
We all know about character development, so I’ll throw in some of my examples of what I think of when it comes to world building examples: Andor & Rogue One, Lord of The Rings, The Sandman, and Dune. I think all of those, while they have character narratives, do an amazing job of making me feel like I’m in the world with them, instead of getting me to slot into one of the characters in the story.
    I’m bad with words.
Edit: Definitely think a good movie has balance as you said. Eternals as a series would have been a better choice. Anyone know if there’s gonna be more stuff like The Sandman?

This might be a hot take, but I'd argue that closing the Galactic Starcruiser is an example of that. Putting aside some of the criticisms regarding where in the timeline it is set (which I admittedly at first was not thrilled with) and the way they mismarketed it as a 'hotel' - it was one of the coolest things I've ever done and a really creative, innovative and unique experience that really was a rare type of experience when it comes to story immersion, improv and the attention to detail was insane (all 4 of us had totally unique experiences). We took our kids and I was skeptical, but the day we 'disembarked' we were already talking about how we could make another trip happen in a few years and what story paths we might pick, and then they announced it was closing. I really, really wish they could have let it recover from some of the initial covid/economy related slowness and allowed word of mouth to catch up, and maybe retooled some aspects to also allow for some smaller package options that were more accessible. It's kind of a hard sell at first for people who aren't really accustomed to stuff like role playing and LARPing, but that is really the niche they should have marketed to.

  • @FalconFXICCY

I remembered going into "Infinity War" and "Endgame" and having every death hit me like a ton of bricks. I cared about every one of the characters in the 2 movies. But that's because the franchise took 11 years and some 20+ movies to get me to that point: to care what happens to them. To recreate that for a new lineup is a tall task. And to do it within the span of only 3-4 years and with a string of TV series is daunting, especially when the plot is central to the shows while the characters take a back seat. It's rare to have a show do a proper character study, like with Shang Chi or Loki. But it shows that when you have writers and directors that focus on establishing the characters first, later on when you bring the plot into it, moviegoers will actually care about the films they're seeing because of their investment in the stories behind who those heroes and villains are. The MCU can still do it right. Retooling their lineup and slowing down are good steps in righting that direction.

The MCU's been a thing for over 15 years and while it's not shy about patting itself on the back for its successes it's made no effort to evolve with its core fanbase. It's great to go over the possibilities of why Disney isn't doing well, and there are certainly many reasons including those described here. But for me it's just been straight up about bad writing across the board. Almost consistently bad. Shows like Andor and Loki are the exceptions that prove the rule. For the most part, the FX departments do very well, as do the various casts, but oftentimes the writing is insultingly dumb and getting worse, while at the same time Disney wants more money for their service.

Things are so saturated that to watch one thing, you have to commit to not watching everything else, which raises the bar. I don't think it's good enough anymore to just be like "it's the new X product". Ok? And? I've got stuff to do, and you're expecting me to pay to sit for three hours to maybe like something?
It's hard to feel like I need to hurry to watch something when they've already announced 10 more movies and shows over the next 5 years.

I was hoping that Wish would have a good turnout, but ... well I for one didn't see it, I guess, because it looks like it was made for Gen Z, like it is concentrating more on checking boxes than telling a story. I want them to go back to telling fairy tales and stories about mythology.
Actually, yeah, I think those stories worked so well because they're ones we're all familiar with on some level and know what to expect, but also they're strong enough to have lasted centuries. Like, I'd love to see a Disney movie about Theseus exploring the labyrinth and fighting the Minotaur, or maybe a film adaptation of Clever Hans, or Hansel & Gretel.

I have no problem with some white male superhero becoming a black girl, but man if you don't wanna make us hate this new character you need to give them depth, personality something that drives them forward. I really loved whole racial background in Falcon and the winter soldier, It was very meaningfull for main characters, and what I think was most important it wasn't written just to be there at cost of the quality of whole show, IT MADE IT BETTER.Gave us connection to Falcon and showed us what are his problems as Black superhero literally named after a country which is mainly white.Just write good characters and plot, you can't make everyone satisfied, there will always be someone who's gonna say show is bad in some way or another. If there's real world problem in the show make it meaningfull for character but why make it WHOLE character. Every movie/ Disney Plus show that was made during covid sucked because of limitations of the lockdown.
That started people turning from Disney Plus and the theater, for the most part .
    It will take time.
I wouldn't worry so much about Disney, I think they have enough money to get by

Covid wasn't really the main problem the main problem is the bad writing in the stories of these movies and shows

What you said should have made disney+ super lucrative.
Now that people can go back to the parks they are in droves, plus the price to get in is way higher so they ahoukd be making a ton of money. Parks like Universal are killing it. Other movie companies are doing well. By the way it now costs upwards of $150 + $30 park to get into a disney park now so they should be making a lot of money.
This company is hemorrhaging money on all sides fir the same reasons and it has nothing to do with a pandemic.

I thought the biggest mistake with Ahsoka was having Sabine able to use the Force. They took a very well made character and turned her into a Mary Sue.
They didn't need her to be a padawan to explain why Ahsoka would want her along. Her skills in demolitions, engineering, and gunfighting in as a Mandalorian seemed to be enough.

Wish was suppose to be a Disney 100 anniversary hallmark? If thats the case, it should have had 2D animation to celebrate its history or have a mix if 2D and 3D. Disney has forsaken its past.

Been thinking about this for a while but basically Disney are like Manchester United. Both have lost/alienated their fanbases, no longer leaders of their industries and have allowed leaks to hamper their businesses. Shocking to witness really.

The slow decline of bad scriptwriters that began showing up in the 90s has finally reached its apex. Gone are the talented, creative people who gave us great movies and television, cast aside by greedy corporate run studios interested only in the bottom line. They were replaced by cheap, generic graduates of screenwriters schools who offer nothing more than memorized formulas.
I don't ever see it getting any better, certainly not with the big corporate studios. Perhaps the independent filmmakers and writers will usher in a renaissance of entertainment for consumers to explore, but don't hold your breath.
Personally I think this is as good as it's going to get. Thank heaven for DVDs and digital libraries, at least the oldies are still there to show us how great entertainment should be.

I agree with a lot of your points, but from a writing point it isn't that it's character focused and more that the stories themselves aren't well rounded. plenty of stories are plot/setting oriented and engaging still, like most of lovecraft's stuff and asimov's work, which don't necessarily have strong characters, but archetypes we project further detail onto. so much of the draw of star wars in the first place is all the other worlds and stories that could be taking place in the universe too. it's true we notice when a character isn't flawed, but not because we can't project onto them, but because it just doesn't feel right/complete (which is where a lot of the beef with mary sues comes from). stories are so often escapist and we engage with them as we want to be, not as we are. we like those characters because they accomplish what we hope to, not because we have similar flaws.
aladdin, for example, it's not that he's poor and chooses to lie to jasmine about him being a prince because he wants a chance at this life, which makes people largely uncomfortable or they ignore, it's that in spite of that, he does good things. he's still brave, he still tries hard to make jasmine happy, and he still chooses to turn his back on further gain and free the genie: all things we hope to be in that situation. as many people as say "I'd wish for infinite wishes" say "and I'd free the genie with my last wish too."
the quality in general has gone down and it results in moments like what we're seeing. when the producers are too focused on making money, they tell safe stories, meaning ones that have more nostalgia bait than character work or actual plot. a lot of what you're saying is character work that hasn't been done are also a plot issues and even with shoddy characters, could have been solved with actual plot continuity.
we like to say stories are plot driven or character driver with a good one being both, but it's a simplistic view of what drives a narrative. stories are engines and some are driven entirely by the situation they're inspired by, whether that's how it will play out or how the people thrown in it will react, and that ends up looking like plot or character, but will never feel right if that's how you approach telling one. ahsoka appears to be plot driven, but it's so full of plot holes most of its character moments hit harder that all the plot, and wish was banking on its loveable, adorkable character, but she isn't fleshed out enough to work, so most of its plot beats prove more interesting and make you wish they were followed instead.

I used to go see every Disney movie, Star wars, marvel etc.
    I skipped wish
    I skipped marvels
    I skipped turning red
    I skipped strange world
It used to be "you HAVE to see this" because you knew it was going to be awesome. Disney used to never disappoint.
Now they're hit or miss, so I'll wait until it's been out, ask friends who saw it what they thought. Then maybe I'll go.
My buddy loved the marvels but I was still like "meh".

I wonder how other film properties are doing in comparison to Disney. It costs way too much to go to theaters as costs for fundamental things (like food) are through the roof. Some stores are selling gallons of milk for $7. Ridiculous! Going to the movies can easily become $20-$30 if people purchase food and/or drink. It’s not worth it when one can wait and stream at home.

We know the sky is falling. I want to see a video about how Disney was in trouble the decade or more before The Little Mermaid came out and how they got out of it not only to survive but thrive. A video like that ends on a hopeful note and is different from the millions of the Disney is dead videos. None of these brands are dead or dying bc they've been here before and they'll figure out the new landscape and be here long after. No studio is on some box office run. I think people are consuming content different and choosing when to go out in a way the old models can't predict. I bet some of the people writing this stuff wrote stuff we loved in the past. Same for the directors and other creatives. I think they'll adjust just like they did in times before.

Just a billion dollars down. So what comes next? What fills the void of post-super hero movies? Will Disney lead on this, I doubt it...What will become of Star Wars when the viewership withers away to a handful of devotees who throw themselves at anything with the Star Wars label on it? Will it nearly go out of business like it nearly did in the 1970s.? Can it come up with ANYTHING creative without worrying about losing millions of dollars? I don't think you have the answers and they certainly don't.
