12:30 I have ALWAYS believed what this young woman said! They weren't knocking or tearing down Christianity, but just pointing out what was actually going on in pop culture.
It’s actually very easy to tell exactly in what context John said those words, even with just the quote by itself. “We’re more popular than Jesus now”. Not better than, or bigger than, or any of the other phrases that American newspapers attached to it, simply more popular. More teens (and folks in general) were crazy about the Beatles than about Jesus. It was a simple fact statement. Unfortunately, I live in the Bible Belt, and I know that any comparison to Jesus that isn’t 100% flattering will draw instant fire and brimstone from the fundamentalist crowd.

That is not the only disparaging thing that Lennon said about The Lord Jesus Christ. I have the quote but it is in a book that is at my townhouse. Next time I go to town I’m getting the book so I can comment with an actual quote. I never liked the Beatles after that. My goodness the hubris,,,, John Lennon was creepy especially toward the end. There was darkness around him and in the end that darkness won and he lost.
What John meant was rock ‘n’ roll being so popular that it seemed like it was more popular with teens than Christianity. Whether that be Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Hell Bobby Darin, Gene Vincent, Fabian.
I think John Lennon cared very much about the backlash over his comment. I would imagine it pissed the other members of the group off as well

Here's a big fan of the four lads, and I didn't cry, I said to myself, this is a spectacular death for John, John couldn't go quietly, he is a big personality and this proves it, only important people die like that, like Kennedy. My favorite conspiracy theory is about the FBI, I didn't pay too much attention then, but with the things happening since 2016 and mostly 2020, I can't discard anything. Reminds me of Princess Diana also. But why? After years of John behaving well? Who knows what he was doing. Anyway, now John belongs to the history of the world. John will never be forgotten.
Oh he cared, he cared a LOT. He was very annoyed with the public, the fans, disappointed, and embarrassed at having brought such negative focus to The Beatles. He stopped touring, and I think that's what sent him into a depression that lasted pretty much the rest of his life.
I mean he wasn’t wrong when he said it, even many of the girls seemed to pick up on it, teens were crazier for the Beatles than they were for Jesus, it was a simple fact statement. Well...jokes aside, I can only say that John has always been my favorite Beatle and I wish he was still here with us, making more amazing music and commentary on current issues. I can only imagine the things he’d have to say about today’s world. Love you John, thank you for everything :)

The whole Jesus controversy was in the South. The reason being is that the Southern Heirarchy in the US at the time hated the Beatles because back 1964 they refused to play to segregated audiences and effectively ended segregation for rock shows in the South.

Cool rockumentary! I take exception to George Galloway's opinion of America in the 60s as a "backwater", backward, reactionary place. So many who don't live in America nevertheless think of themselves as experts on it. America of the 60s was MANY things, good, bad and indifferent. A lot had to do with geography. There WERE "backward" places. There were also liberal, forward-thinking places too. More often than not, since 1900, America has been the world leader. Other nations follow America, if not politically, then culturally. Even out of Galloway's backwater American South came blues, jazz, and rock and roll. The Beatles (and John Lennon) were motivated, musically, by such culturally "backward" (his word) artists as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. In fact, without America, I opine that The Beatles would not exist. What they were built upon wouldn't have existed, therefore, neither could THEY exist. So, he can take his bullshit opinions on America somewhere else. As for John Lennon, amazing voice, amazing songwriter, funny, heart in the right place, with just a few flaws (to prove he was human). He was a gift to mankind the world over. His death STILL reverberates. The pain is not as sharp and immediate as it once was, but no one has replaced him, that's for sure.

The world needs to remember John Lennon's words of love and peace. He gave us hope that, one day, there would be no more wars or killing. When he was murdered, it was the world's most tragic event in history as far as I am concerned. His teachings should never be forgotten. John sang the words of Jesus, and the warmongers didn't like that. Unfortunately, they won and are now preaching their hate and violence. It is that violence that took away our hope of the vision of unity among people. Look at the world now and what we have become! Oh God, I would give anything to see John's vision come to fruition. I think he meant more popular given the silly culture at the time which viewed they could do no wrong. He later wrote the merry go round song which put things in better perspective.

In my opinion, with humility and due reverence to our Lord Jesus Christ, John Lennon made his worse mistake of saying whether "that either he is more or bigger than Christianity or Lord Jesus Christ. The sad story of his life and that of Paul McCartney together with George Harrisson and Ringo Starr deserve - - - again, in my opinion - - - the understanding and blessing of God. That is why they were given the rare musical gifts to combine and to succeed. Unfortunately, John Lennon abused himself that certainly - - - in my mind - - - displeased God Who could have saved him from evil minds roaming all over the earth.

And even if he DID say "more popular", that can be taken differently. It can have multiple usages. Love vs "believing IN" (??) vs liking their music vs WHATEVER!!! In the 60s my dad was in his 20s and he hated the Beatles , my grandpa just laughed at them and thought they were the silliest act he had ever seen .
I was in elementary school at the time and to me , the Beatles were not going to take the place of the Everly Brothers , Elvis Presley and Connie Francis , and they never did .
The Beatles were only popular for about 7 years as the Everlys , Elvis and Connie outlasted them .

I think the larger issue was not what John Lennon said about the Beatles' popularity compared to Jesus, but rather his statement that Christianity would "vanish and shrink" and saying he "needn't argue about that. I'm right and will be proven right." This seems to have more of an anti- Christian tone to it and probably prompted a lot of the reaction...
