Grew up with The Beatles. They were / are huge influences on my life.
I still cannot think of any band that produced so much excellence over such a short period of time.
They " officially " started in 1963 and they were done by 1969 .
    Six years.
An astounding amount of work .
The concerts , the movies and , of course , The music.
    Total brilliance.

Unbelievable only 6 yrs!!! From meet the Beatles to Abbey Road. It’s like going from a go cart to a Bentley. In the movie “let it be” not one of them were yet in their 30s!!! 😮

But they were together for much longer - at least 5 years ground work went into the band prior to them “ breaking” in 1963 . You can’t ignore those 5 years , you have to add them onto the 63-70 . That’s 15 years , not 6 !

I'm 57 and I've absolutely LOVED the Beatles since I first heard them when I was 11...
I think that the "Abbey Road" album explained the differences between John and Paul's songwriting style. Paul wrote those beautiful ballads on side #2...and John's songs provided a raw... political...and bluesy sound for the album...and their entire career.
When John and Paul first met each other...the stars in the Universe were perfectly ALIGNED!!!

    • @richardmortimer8147

Actually, I think those perceptions of John and Paul don't always hold. Some of John's best songs are his ballads - In My Life, Hey, you gotta hide your love away, etc! That is when he is at his best. Paul, is often best with a harder 'rock' style, such as you find on Abbey Road, Back in the USSR, etc. Listen to his voice in 'Oh, darling!

How curious that this documentary has the same title as John's song as recorded by The Beatles and released two days ago. I might not have watched it if it were titled differently, as I thought at the beginning that it would end with the story of how the cassette tape that had, "For Paul" written on it came to be finally completed in 2023. That said, I'm very glad that I watched it. In my life I love them all.

While I have no talent and had little skill in music these guys allowed me and friends to have an amazing time doing garage band stuff in the late 60's. God Bless the Beatles.

100% agreed. I'm only about 1/4 through the doc, and although it's gotten me very invested, I did realize quite early on that the audio mixing is terrible.
Having said that, it's certainly already taught an old Beatlemaniac a few new tricks, which is honestly what's kept me going. I'd think any time an old Beatles fan is able to learn something new, they'll likely weather any storm in anticipation of the next new morsel. :)
Anyhow, for as much smack as I've talked (25% of the way through and taking a short pause), this documentary has been otherwise terrific.

Too bad that the music overpowered some of the commentary but as it went on, it really is a great documentary. I wonder just how much John's comment that caused all the Beatle hatred and albums burning, played a part in his wanting to get out, even more than being with Yoko. That was a HUGE upset that his comments caused the entire group. That energy doesn't just leave and can linger causing unconscious painful associations.
I feel for Paul having to take such actions against his friends on top of the breakup. That's a lot of emotional trauma to deal with so no wonder he went into a depression and hibernated in Scotland. Can't blame him one bit. That's devastating stuff to deal with emotionally. Glad he was able to recoup and go forward. He's got such massive talent!!!

He played Bass on Carly Simon's smash hit, "You're So Vain" and also John & Yoko's "Plastc Ono Band" LP. 1966-69 he played Bass for Manfred Mann & The Earth Band and later, many other greats. He was especially close friends with George Harrison, since their Hamburg days, and he played Bass on many of George's earliest solo recordings. He's currently a record producer, graphic artist & designer living in his native Germany.

Is there some reason why George is virtually ignored in this? I mean, all I here is one mention of his name. Ringo fares little better: he's brought up at the time he joins The Beatles, and is never heard of again. Both their contributions are almost completely ignored.
And why is this titled, "Now And Then"? It has nothing whatsoever to do with the "new" song. A clickbait title, perhaps?

Because Yoko is retired with Al'shammer, Olivia Harrison is giving all her George money to NWO world government, Democrat candidates and anti Trumpism, and Ringo is just being Ringo and playing the part he was cast in - Paul is the official story now, and to be honest, Paul is getting better at telling it.- Until the story suddenly changes as it oft does - Pauls what we got left .

Do you not remember all the unfair persecution Paul suffered because of John’s drug fuelled attacks on him, thru the media.
Then the music media continued to attack Paul for the next decade through the media.
It was during this time that Paul was rescuing the Beatles business affairs.
All the Beatles are families are at least twice as wealthy as they would have been without Pauls creativity and business savvy. Don’t you think he has the right to be acknowledged for his massive contribution to their success and wealth.

Why do people get upset with Paul for being alive and talking about his life or letting others speak about him and say he’s great? Should he be quiet and never talk about the Beatles again? And this is how misinformation starts and possibly spreads. At 15:06 Julia Baird states the John and Paul meeting was in 1956. In fact, the year they met at the fete is 1957. Even a few seconds after she speaks that wrong date a flyer is shown with the correct year as 1957. I suppose folks will claim this is a minor thing but I''m merely pointing out that mistakes like this occur constantly as it's up to each person to search for the truth and ascertain what is a fact and what is a fiction.

Why would they say that Paul was the main innovating force in the Beatles, not John? The band as a whole, including George Martin and studio technicians, were highly innovative. Saying that John wasn't is just plainly wrong. Just as wrong to discount Paul's creativity. The table doesn't stand on only one of its four legs.

THIS IS AN UPDATED AND CORRECTED COMMENT : I have always thought that each Beatle was a distinctive 1/4 of the group, hence here why fans always had their personal favorite Beatle, mine was George . Even thought Lennon was the creator or founder of The Beatles , and that he decided to take a chance on him, Harrison was actually Paul's best friend at the time. and liked what he heard. Harrison was to become a far better musician than Lennon ever was, he learned to play over 20 instruments on his own, more than Lennon ever did, he was the one that made the sitar fashionable . He was the quiet genius , he was the one that save " And I love her ", originally, they had made a drum version , which was actually not bad at all, but Harrison came up with the guitar lead opener, which he doubled back to back at the end, that's when he earned Lennon's respect, and he stop looking down on him. No one can even imagine the Beatles as only 3, that would be like a car with 3 wheels, as George Harrison once said about Ringo. And this was while the real McCartney was alive. When you put together that when the real McCartney died, he left about 500 songs already written between him and John, + that Campbell did know how to play the guitar and the bass, actually has done an excellent job in replacing McCartney, ( actually, Campbell did messed up big time, when they did the All you need is love show, he came out playing the bass with his right hand, everyone knew that the real McCartney was left handed, even then he got away with it ) + and the fact that the whole thing was The late Queen’s idea, she was afraid that millions of teenage girls world wide would commit suicide, when it became known that Paul had died, is the reason the law will never go after Campbell. But those who would know the truth, the real McCartney’s family, Jane Asher and his second wife Heather Mills, you would have to watch George Harrison's " Last will and testament " to understand why I say this. If you look at the type of music Campbell has produced on his own, compare to the music done by The Beatles, is almost child’s play, it doesn’t have consistency, if you were to compare “ Girl “ or “ I’ve just seen a face “ to Campbell’s “mama miss America” or “ Uncle Albert”, oh pleeeease, give me a brake. As big a Beatle's fan that I was ( it's getting real old to be honest ), this last song as well as " Free as a bird " would had been better if they never appeared in public, you can tell that the creativity and imagination of the Beatles had gone dry, say for example if you were to compare these 2 songs to " The word " or " Your going to loose that girl " or " While my guitar gently weeps"., which is an anthem for guitar playing and listeners lovers. I grew up with The Beatle's music, they gave me happiness and strength on sad and lonely days , Is when they disbanded that's when I became an Elvis fans in 1969. I strongly recommend , if you get a chance to watch watch.how/movie/paul-mccartney-really-is-dead-the-last-testament-of-george-harrison/32337?Google&Search&t_source=64&gclid=Cj0KCQjwtJKqBhCaARIsAN_yS_kyPFWObwPJQc9FXMBYxU68N-vKVo1f0EABMi6aks66vDdUpJE-GgwaAjB6EALw_wcB , that you do it, it will bring you out of many doubts.
The fact that he wasn't the real McCartney, was one reason they broke up, not as much the Yoko thing , yes, that didn't helped at all to the situation , that was like throwing gasoline into the fire, but the fire was already there. McCartney ( Campbell ) intended to control The Beatles , bringing in his brother in-law ( Atty. John L. Eastman ) and Allen Klein to be the group's managers, when this didn't go down well, it was in his best interest that they broke up. When they did the Beatle's Anthology cd series, you could tell that Harrison was kinda distant from Campbell. When the real McCartney died, an ultra secret contest to find someone who looked like McCartney started in California , the judge was none other than the late Dick Clark . So Campbell sore of hit the lottery here . Ringo, what can I say about Ringo? He is a good drummer , but the late Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones was far better, if you compare Ringo's finest drumming, as in " Rain " which he himself has stated was his best, to Charlie's " Paint it black ", there's simply no comparison. Plus, somewhere in 2000, Ringo gave a news conference stating that he didn't want to hear from his fans and would not be answering any fans letter anymore, he is an ungrateful person, this is where I like and I think that Elvis was a far superior entertainer , he never forgot how to be grateful to his fans, they were the ones that made him.
After The Beatles disbanded ,I bought all the George Harrison , john Lennon music . When Harrison tour the states, I went to see him, Lennon hardly did any touring at all . I just never liked Campbell's musical style, it's for kindergarten kids , I did buy about 4 Ringo albums, but when he did that news conference, I threw them away. As I mentioned, being a Beatle's fan has gotten pretty old by now for me. Thanks for reading my comment.
