After 105K views, You Tube blocked and removed Vol 5 of this series. I’ve addressed the flagged issue and am uploading again (in two parts this time). *PLEASE NOTE: This version does NOT differ significantly from the original one, published in February 2019. Apologies for any inconvenience.

breathless, just to echo a comment I made on this series some time ago, I'm absolutely astounded about the depth of your research and incredibly hard work you must have invested in bringing together what are often pretty disparate and in some cases relatively unknown strands of the Lennon-McCartney story, or is that legend? It had taken me some time to get to this final part so I was unaware until now about You Tube's problems with some bits of this final part (I can almost guess what those problems were but won't say more). Again, I can only say this is easily the most in-depth, emotional and downright intense take I have ever seen on the remarkable Lennon-McCartney story. Given their role as the cornerstone of the Beatles, it's now wonder Beatles music remains so durable to this day. Again, congratulations on what can only be described as a masterpiece.

The Beatles are already legendary then . John's death made them immortal. I am part of the second wave, or second generation of Beatlemania in the 80's. Before he was killed, I only know a few facts about them. His death sparked my attention and interest, along with millions of others that time. We bridged the 60's to the 80's and carried through the computer age where Steve Jobs further extended their legacies when he offered them thru i-tunes. Now the Beatles will live on throughout the next generations. Beatles forever.

Having been a lifelong fan of The Beatles I've really enjoyed seeing events from Paul's perspective. As a therapist it seems fairly plausible that John likely had borderline personality disorder (BPD) caused by his childhood trauma.
It makes complete sense that John would have felt betrayal/rejection by Paul - simply for Paul transitioning through adulthood and finding new partners.
For someone with this attachment disorder, a perceived 'abandonment' like this would cause the psyche to split (from deep love to obsessive ruminating hate), triggering painful unhealed childhood wounds.
BPD sufferers often find themselves with either caring empaths or narcissistic partners, the latter providing a kind of intense love (toxic codependency) plugging the gaping hole in them created by absent parents. This person will become their saviour and put on a pedestal.
I see how desperately mentally unwell, struggling with substance dependancy and vulnerable John was and it breaks my heart to know he was open to exploitation and emotional manipulation by Yoko. He just needed to be loved.
It is certain John and Paul felt a deep powerful love and connection for one another, paradoxically, John's angry reaction at their separation was the duality measurement of his adoration. Paul would have been everything to John.
I'm devastated to learn Paul seemed genuinely puzzled at what he'd 'done' to hurt him and carried this weight with him all his life (seemingly questioning John and himself). It's really quite simple, Paul grew up and John's system of stability came crashing down. Cue Yoko the rebound replacement. Whilst I don't question the depths of John and Yoko's feelings for each other (particularly in the early days) it was an unhealthy connection created out of loss (Paul) infatuation, drug abuse, codependency, need, obsession, control, power and ownership.
Amazing series, well put together, really great work. Thank you so much. 💖

BPD or paranoia mixed with narcissism. So many of John’s critical comments seem rooted in jealousy which in turn seems to stem from his insecurities It’s sad that John never seemed to get the psychological help he really needed.

Your sensitivity and love for your subject matter is evident throughout all 5 parts. The reverb on the music in the background was an inspired choice. It gives the material a historical depth and feels like you're taking the viewer into new, hallowed territory.
The salient thesis of your series is love. Perhaps the love that dare not speak its name. And there may be some redundancy for some. But for a life long Beatles fan like myself, it was a savory binge viewing experience.
Your research is impressive and is what makes this series so good. The personal anecdotes you included really give the thesis significance. Never mind what Paul or John had to say to a reporter. What did they say to the people around them? And what did the people around them see and hear? The comments from Harry Nilsson about John confiding his feelings for Paul felt real and extremely personal. A mutual friend seeing John wearing an 'I Love Paul' button.
These personal anecdotes give the material a depth because there's so many of them.
There were many things I didn't know. I knew that they had to of been close. And I suppose on a deep level because of my own inner conflict with myself and the world I understand John's side better. The hurt one.
Love was the fuel that moved them forward. And their love for each other made its way into their music.
I got misty eyed and shed a tear several times. Sometimes from sadness and other times out of love and emotion. I was trying to think of what it was that I appreciate so much about this series and one thing came to mind - it's tragic. Its heartbreaking. Thank you so much for your hard work. You created something worthy of being seen. It honors its subject matter and is as every bit as good as the best books that have ever been written about the Beatles. A+

When I first saw this, I took it with a bigger pinch of salt than I think it deserves. I dismissed some of it as McCartney bias (probably because I have a lot towards him creatively myself) but after thinking it through, this is one of the more neutral and authentic studies into this relationship. Most Beatles authors/"scholars" (ew) heavily and unapologetically favour Lennon, which in itself is harmless, but when they start to ignore or change parts of the story to better justify that preference, then it becomes an issue. I can't thank you enough for providing an underrepresented perspective to so many people, especially when it's evident that this took so much time and effort with no monetary reward to show for it and a heap of other obstacles with UA-cam's copyright system. So John was hurt that Paul did the film score without him, but Paul didn't find out until years later, and Paul's understandably confused; wonders why John never said anything to him and acted like it was fine. But...does anyone else remember that bizarre exchange between John and Paul during the _Let It Be_ sessions? It's in part 2 of this doc. John asks Paul, "Did you dream about me last night?" Paul says he doesn't remember, and John goes on to say that it was such a powerful dream, "we were both there and I was touching you...You must have had it, too." I mean, I don't know if that's sweet, or scary, or just plain nuts! 🤔 He's assuming that he and Paul are on so much on the same wavelength that _they must have had the same dream._ Add to that the comments from the former Quarrymen (about how John and Paul could communicate with just a look), and I start to wonder if John felt like Paul should just *know* what he was feeling at any given time, without ever being told.
32:29 "He thought he had a psychic connection to Paul." Well, I guess I got my answer!

It's all just overwhelmingly sad to me... these two were absolutely twin flames. I think Paul 100% wanted John in his life always but just didn't want to be smothered or have Yoko coming between them either. It was all very complicated!

    • @dantefloressq

Read about borderline personality disorder. I have it and we do often obsess over someone at such length that we think they should be able to read our minds because we have such deep connections. I think he had this disorder.
Also about John not telling Paul he was upset. It probably would've humiliated him to admit he was jealous. Jealousy is something that is seen as an inherently bad and immature reaction to something, especially when it's a man jealous another man isn't spending enough time with him.

A ride that only intensified the admiration that I've always felt about this duo's astounding talent and the bond that I had already developed even furthered being able to better understand their relationship. I'm left wishing that they could have been as open with each other because if they had maybe John would have been were he was meant to be on that fateful day instead of NY when his life of stolen from him, Paul, and the world. Your documentary series has just gone up to a full ten out of ten after I saw you include the words of John's half-sister Julia. I respect her greatly having devoured her own memoir and not only met her but stayed in touch with her a short time after. She has MUCH to say, she says it so well and yet she is acknowledged only fleetingly if at all in any of the Beatles books I've read, let alone anywhere in a documentary!
I like the way you identified her as John's 'sister'....rather than 'half'....she may as well have been! :)

The best thing Yoko did was giving Paul those two tapes of unfinished songs John wrote for Paul. I think it allowed Paul to find his closure and even become cordial with Yoko. I wish John had stayed with May tho. At least they would have gotten a chance to work together again probably but alas.
This was a beautiful and emotional ending of this in-depth documentary, I think every Beatles fan should be grateful for the body of work you created. Here Today still makes me cry every time and Early Days has such a strong nostalgic feeling that it's a perfect choice for last moments.

Well that's all the series watched now and it's one of the most comprehensive, happy, sad, enlightening and interesting things I've seen on this subject and certainly thought provoking. Great work Breathless 345 ✌️
The main theme underlying all is the intenseness the relationship, an almost sexuality from John. Talented, aggressive, loving but overall quite sad and insecure...all because of his fractured and tragic childhood.
The other elements show Paul as a decent, honest guy but Yoko is a determined driven and controlling force. The most forthright examples are George's interview on John's behaviour during a visit, looking and sounding like he couldn't say something, reinforced by Julian's personal deep thoughts, and then May Pang's description of Yoko... basically manipulation and control. And Cynthia, have more insight into the real man. Warts n all.
Altogether I have greater respect for Paul, talented, progressive, tolerant, loving, positive, down to earth and honest. Yet he had a kicking throughout the 70s and onwards because of it. Whilst John for all his talent, positive drive was petty, jealous, self destructive and quite sad through the 70s.
I can't help thinking that John just took the wrong path finding Yoko. She was/is very strong and has certainly been successfull in creating the myth of the loving couple, fighting for causes... and more importantly the loving couple with an idyllic life.
However Yoko also took a helluva public beating in the early years...as did Linda for different reasons.
But oh to think of the close what if's... Paul meeting Yoko and passing her to John, Epstein's death, Yoko introducing John to Allen Klein...May Pang and the New Orleans plans.
And the assassination which stopped any chance ...the cards certainly didn't work for Yoko or us there.
Well done Breathless345 but maybe too thick on the homosexuality vibe...maybe ✌️

These are great videos for any true fan. Lots of unseen m, unheard bits. The love these two giants of modern times had for each other becomes so much clearer watching these. I really hope Paul gets to see these. The media always twister it to get a fresh argument going. But John even refers to Paul as his brother in that spoken interview that the media subsequently made to sound negative.
Yoko preyed on Johns insecurity’s and for my money, became a much more negative influence on him, far outweighing any of the early positive aspects she might have inspired in him.
JL had so much planned. Was coming back to England with his new album. Back to his family. Back to Paul. It would have been the best thing ever. He and yoko would have been over and done at some stage. The return home would have made the difference I think.
But all in all these have been excellent. Anyone got an email for Paul’s manager ? Please let him see this stuff.

Something you said here have me a bit more insight. Perhaps John carried their shared pain of losing their mothers for the both of them, while Paul “never had” that pain. I mean, of course, Paul felt pain and heartache, but I think the illustrative abstraction of John carrying that weight (!!!) defines some of the magic of their partnership.

Whenever Paul had pain, which he did, considerably, he fought it with music, working and his family, particularly Linda and the children. John wasn’t able to fight it strongly enough. I’d guess that Paul having lost his mother but having a loving and caring dad who played piano, made a huge, difference. John had lived with neither of his parents nor his half siblings and that wasn’t his choice. Paul had a good brother - Mike.
John clearly felt rejected by his parents and that feeling plus a need to react and be dominant, continued. He couldn’t dominate Paul, particularly as time passed. I think that John felt rejected by Paul’s progress musically, so he left the group. Paul hadn’t actually done anything, to deliberately hurt John. I don’t think that John ever really recovered from doing that but that he couldn’t face again, what he perceived as rejection.

Paul did go through his own share of tragedy in his life (his Mum dying when he was 14 for starters!). But he prefers to avoid discussing these painful emotions and feelings and instead he pours them into his music. Wether he does this conciously or not, only he knows. Some "Beatle historians" like Lewisohn are clearly biased against Paul and they either 1. dedicate very little time (or none at all) to Paul and his mother Mary passing away (and the impact of her death on him and his family) or 2. paint Paul as a cartoonish villain figure in the band's lore... Someone way different from what we can see in this documentary.

Having watched the whole thing now, I am also impressed with how you managed to convey something that many ordinary-thinking people will take too literally....(you know what I'm talking about).....and also convey it with balance and openness rather than conviction or, perish the thought, sensationalism.
My gut feeling, having read so many different Beatle volumes, is that John would've tried anything and considered anything just to find out that little bit more about existence and indeed himself. This is a man who, as a boy, told his best friend Pete Shotton that he'd tried to masturbate as many times as possible in one day just to see what would happen to his poor John Thomas!
He was the one who would set a building ablaze purely to watch what happened. He was the one to leap in a helicopter last minute to be alone with Maharishi. His curiosity went several steps further than most of us. That said, despite the talk and the frank revelations, there were too many hours, too many occasions, too many beds shared by John and Paul without them ever 'going there'. That doesn't make the subject any less interesting though.
All in all though, this is about love. If people don't see it for what it is and choose to see it as something else then what can you do?

    • @ag358

It's funny, paul who is alive has said many times there were no sexual encounters or advances by either men. When at the height of beatlemania they spent a lot of time in hotels and shared beds. Nothing sexual , they just couldn't go outside without losing the shirts. But people, being sensationalists, have to put lies out there to make money. Two men can be spiritually close and not be gay.

@@ag358 Does it ruin it for you if they physically made love? We don't know either way and I think you are right. I think it is an unrequited heat/flirtation that Paul is maybe playing into and maybe not but John is definitely reading a lot into it, for sure. John might just be more honest about it and Paul is in denial, further repressed. It seems possible though that we DON'T KNOW the full story. We only found out two years ago or something about Paul's anecdote about them all masturbating together, in a joking way. He's also indicated there's stories he won't make public -- his Irish stiff-upper-lip politeness thing -- until after Yoko or him has passed. There is definitely more to the story from his side, and these videos are good -- and still not entirely comprehensive because it also requires listening to all of the songs with the understanding that John and Paul were ALWAYS passing notes to each other through their lyrics. We're only aware of the obvious ones. It's definitely possible they still have secrets. And if it turns out the Beatles story is much queerer than it's been usually portrayed, it is kind of beautiful... and it also just makes John's early songs make SO MUCH MORE SENSE if it's understood that ALL of his songs are about Paul in some way, or a reaction to him, lyrically or musically. All of John's early stuff is love songs -- the infatuation with Paul. Oddly, he doesn't write love songs as much after he pairs up with Yoko -- whereas Paul is the opposite. He seems like he's in a lot of emotional distress, lyrically, during the Beatles... and then with Wings, he's clearly living his best life. It's definitely interesting and exciting how it adds this extra layer -- and it's so funny how obvious it is if they were lovers, that the only reason it wasn't seen is just because America/West is so repressed that it just doesn't occur to us, unelsss it's very explicitly stated. I remember kids arguing about Queen not being gay, that it was a chess reference or something. With the Lennon/McCartney songs the best way to understand it is to assume each song is being directed to at least 3 different people -- Hey Jude is to Julian, John, and the fictional Jude, to say nothing on how it's also a larger political/social statement and personal ethos.

Thank you for this series. I'm always struck by the sophistication and shesr common sense shown by all of the group in dealing with the superficial fluff and stupidity of entertainment industry interviews. It's almost as if they were the down to earth ones amidst the madness that surrounded them in the Beatle days. As a musician, I found it hard to engage with the Beatles at first, because wherever you turned they were being shoved down your throat by those who stood to gain from the publicity generated. I came to love them as song-writers and arrangers in their recordings after they had split up, and was able to work backwards from Abbey Road on down. I was never a fan of them as a band, because they had ceased to be a band by the time they rose to prominence, and was never interested in who was the "quiet one" or whatever... that was for young girls who weren't actually interested in music. It took me a while to appreciate John's songwriting at first, but I soon saw his material as torturously produced as an artistic labour of love, and never as "shsken out of his sleeve" as was the case with the more prolific and fluent MacCartney, and I feel his songs were more deliberate and solid. Paul's talent and prodigious output is almost too blinding to see clearly, but was always fluid and beautiful. What a wonderful pair that we were lucky to find working together in a way raely seen nowadays, improving and balancing each other out such that their achievements, along with Georges made music that was mire than the sum total of all the parts.

But it’s hard to put the finishing touches on something that was never formally ended, ie., their friendship. So that timeless quality does indeed shine through, but maybe the point was made too many times. Ok great so they loved one another, and maybe John more in a way that Paul was uncomfortable with. I had that “childhood friend” experience where I truly felt that love and which in the end wasn’t reciprocated. It broke my heart and I held that torch for many, many years, but finally hey, you know what, I set down that torch and moved on. John never got that chance to truly move on due to his untimely end. So, summing up, John and Paul’s relationship was perhaps the greatest Unfinished Symphony of the 20th century. Amen.

He wouldn’t let go until he found acid, to be honest. John was always looking for someone, some thing to worship. Always craving the “mommy replacement” or the “father figure”. McCartney could never be a “mommy replacement” but John almost held him as a “father figure”, which I’m sure was difficult for Paul in so many ways. But Paul had the patience of a saint. If you don't have plans for your next project, i would like to propose one idea to ya.... It would be great to have such an insight look like the one you did for the Lennopn/McCartney relationship, but now regarding the history and origin of Free as a bird, Real Love and Now and then. SPECIALLY focusing if possible on what John thought about those songs. I've never heard him mention them on any interview or conversation. I wonder... did he recorded those demos and just kept them locked because he detested those songs? It could be, because it seems he never considered them for Double fantasy or Milk and Honey... or did he? Did he mentioned them at any moment during the Double fantasy recording sessions? Did he showed them to the producer, Jack Douglas? Was there any real indication that John considered Now and Then for Paul?
I WOULD LOVE to see your video about that topic.
Thanks again and have a great 2024!

Just brilliant - this is such a magical, fascinating, compelling study. The archive video research alone must have taken an age to compile but it is the editing that wins the prize. Should be released on DVD! Dives much, much deeper than the official Anthology ever did.

This is a well done, but at times overreacting documentary about the relationship between Lennon and McCartney. It was well researched and fact based putting together many sourced interviews. It is an interesting study of John and Paul's partnership and goes much deeper into it than any other documentary I have seen up to date. In the vein of the 'Anthology' series, it is compiled completely of direct quotes mostly from the two and of those closest to them. I do feel that it is trying to push a particular narrative at times, but it never fully draws any conclusions.
The main objective of the series is to explore the deep and emotional relationship between the two. It was implied that there was a deep love between the two (which I don't think could be denied) that may have had sexual undertones and implications, especially from Lennon's perspective. It was an interesting watch if not a bit unsettling and heartbreaking at times. It is a fully sourced exploration of the relationship as a sort of, if not outright, love affair. I found it worth the watch.
I would recommend watching the series in it's entirety. It is a really thorough look at the dynamics of the personal and working relationship of the two. I'm happy that someone finally took the time to do it, though my only complaint is that they didn't need to try to push the narrative quite as much. There was already enough there for certain conclusions to be drawn. Also, it may have served better to follow a more chronological order, although I think the time jumps were well thought out. They help to support and move the story along with emotional weight.
I view this documentary as a mostly accurate depiction of the Lennon McCartney relationship and it's attempts to answer a lot of troubling questions. I always wondered why there was so much hurt, anger, competitiveness, and obsessive behaviors, especially where John was concerned. As the Beatles themselves have said, it was very much like a marriage. I think of it more so as a marriage between Paul and John, with George and Ringo like the children. When you put things in those contexts it really does make a lot of sense.
John would be the first to admit that he was a 'Jelous Guy', and it was likely that, combined with the fierce competitiveness that drove a deep wedge between him, Paul, and possibly many other people in his life. As anyone would acknowledge, personal relationships and emotions are very complicated and multilayered. I think this is especially true when considering those who are highly sensitive, creative and intelligent. Add drugs, alcohol, free love, fame, success and fortune in the mix and you really do create one crazy stew!
One interesting topic it brought to my attention was the indication that Paul, working on 'The Family Way' soundtrack with George Martin, was the first time Paul McCartney worked on music, and was credited for, with someone other than John Lennon. It was suggested by Yoko to Paul that (even though Paul was thoughtful enough to ask and was given the OK by John, being that John at the time was in Spain filming 'How I Won the War') this may have been the first rift in the professional relationship of the two. It was said that John could be very sensitive and easily hurt but would not express his true feelings in theese type of circumstances.
Paul had already collaborated with George Martin on the scores for Yesterday and Eleanor Rigby. Although John may or may not have been trobled by that, he would (or could) have had some imput on them, felt part of their creative process, or at least be partially credited for them. In this instance he may have felt left out and was insulted for not being asked to collaborate or be given some credit for the project. This may have been the point that he really began to feel threatened by the working relationship between Paul and George Martin. Perhaps he felt that this was proof of George Martin's supposed favor of Paul's abilities over his own (and / or vice versa) and saw Paul, only too willingly, take advantage of that in his absence.
It has been said by anyone who closely knew him, that Lennon could be unreasonably sensitive at times. It seems obvious that from this point forward the collaboration between the two started to become less and the competition more prominent.
I find it interesting too, in the context of 'The Family Way' as a sort of push / pull of the circumstance surrounding the group at that particular point in The Beatles career.
All four seemed to be at a cross road, spending less time together and getting involved in their own personal projects.
Paul living the bachelor life, getting involved in the avant-garde art and counter culture of the period, while John was feeling the escalating tension between his family, career and personal desires coming to a head. This may have been an attempt by George Martin to keep Paul grounded. He may have used this time to sway him in a particular direction with themes of love, commitment and traditional family values.
It has been documented that prior to the making of 'Sgt. Pepper's' George Martin was pushing for an album of similar themes regarding their experiences growing up in suburban Liverpool. Perhaps George was worried about them (maybe Paul in particular) straying to far off course from theese humble and sobering ideals. Meanwhile, John was in the process of following Paul's lead into a less traditional way of life, desperate for a way to break free from the constraints of suburban life and fatherhood. It's somewhat ironic that once John began to feel liberated, Paul was happily and confidently moving in the other direction as the 'traditional' family man. It is easy to see how John may have felt left hanging and let down by Paul.
Add in the feelings of abandonment and betrayal that John would frequently be plaged by; the belief that George favored and put more thought into Paul's compositions; Paul beginning to work more closely with George on his compositions; the feeling that his own compositions were not getting as equal thought or consideration from the two; this was the beginnings of a perfect storm beginning to brew within the band.
As we now know, it was only a matter of time before the passing of Brian Epstien, the debacle of Apple and it's lack of true leadership and management, the collapse of the 'Get Back project and numerous other factors, all contributed to the eventual break up and bitter fued between the Lennon McCartney partnership. I think it can be clearly seen that Paul's insistence of Lee Eastman and rejection of Allen Kline as manager, would be viewed by John's as yet another instance of Paul attempting to get more favor and attention than himself.
The miracle of it all is that we not only got amazing music but also a fascinating story from all of that turmoil. I'm sure they will be the basis of endless discussion for generations to come!
The Paul McCartney interview about the music for 'The Family Way' was in the most recent and the most interesting of additions to the six part series, which I believe may be concluded now. 'The Family Way' is discussed in vol 5 part 2 at 11:30

Well said. Recently I heard the isolated track of strings and horns for I Am The Walrus for the first time. It is so fantastically creative, intricate, bizarre, innovative, powerful, and appropriate that I instantly thought, of course, George Martin was completely in love with John, albeit in a very proper hereto English way, but of course! It was John Lennon for heavens sake and who wouldn’t want to do their god damn best to please, support, impress such an incredible charismatic person given the opportunity? That piece of music to me anyway permanently puts to rest the who’s the 5th Beatle nonsense. I hope eventually it will gain the recognition it deserves as a great musical work in its own right. And I hope in a shared private moment George Martin got to hear John Lennon say “bloody hell, that’s pure fucking genius”.

While your text is well thought out with timelines and percieved rifts, i disagree with the sexual overtones. Two men or two women can be extremely close without the relationship being sexual or any sexual suggestion.

@@ag358 But it's John who repeatedly brings up the subject [with Yoko adding her bit]. So as in such a discussion, that the research for this video created, it can't be ignored, as possibly, a reason for some of John's confused emotions and reactions. We will never really know - but it all adds up to us being privileged enough to witness one of the most intriguing creative partnerships of all time

@@allymayful you can take words, sentences out of context from Lennon's millions of hours of video or Paul's and make them into whatever you want. The two were close friends, competitive artists, and was in the most dynamic group ever, so emotions were all over the place for all of them. Paul has ,for the record said john was not gay, nor was he. But here we have an edited film of words taken from many different interviews to make a narrative which just wasn't true.
