  • I was incredibly scared of Ocarina of Time's graphical problems to translate on Majora but...THAT ALL HAS CHANGED! It's simply phenomenal, and right now the best way to play Majora. Here's why.

The 'save states' are one of my favorite features of the Switch ports for classic games. I mean turning the Switch off while playing and coming back hours later just to unpause where you left off is good in itself but ugh--some games like MMs' QoL is improved with the save state feature

Unironically one of the worst ideas I have heard, these 'complete' remakes are completely different games and in many ways botch the original vision, RE2R for instance as you mention is *nothing* like the actual RE2, that's not even mentioning how devoid of creativity the entire concept of a remake is

Have you seen the mod Project Restoration for MM3D? In my opinion it is the best way to play Majora's Mask hands down, it reimplements everything from the original but keeps the quality of life changes from the 3DS version, and adds a few extra qol additions of its own too! Yes and I played this mod recently and it was my first experience with vanilla Majora since I was a kid (I play the randomizer). MM is intended to be a time management hustle, so idk about that with the 3DS version talking about fidelity. Sure is the best way if you grew up in 2005 and save states and check points are mandatory.

I think the lighting difference is just due to the difference of outputs between the consoles. The N64 used the now ancient composite cables, and the output being as old as it is saturated the picture more then was actually programmed, especially on modern displays. The emulator doesn’t have to register any output, so the lighting is perfectly faithful to what was coded. Really a non issue to me.

I have been playing the N64 version as of late and as these old games are prone to do, my game randomly crashed right after I beat a boss before I had an opportunity to save. Not only did I have to beat the boss over again, but even though I had made sure to save the game right before getting to said boss, I lost all my temple progress too! Because on the N64, if you reset the game without saving, the game does not take you back to your last save, but you instead start back at day 1! ahhhhhhh! All I could think was, man, the people playing the Switch version are SMART! Though I can’t help but wonder for first-time players how much the Switch version takes away from the challenge of the time clock mechanic of the game. MM3D on a new 3DS XL is definitely still the best way to play the game. I know people don't like a lot of the changes but no one who doesn't have fond memories of the original will think they're such a big deal as to forego the improvement in texture and model quality, and QoL improvements.

@UCaCSF30MYsrhYhNJPuEPscQ None of this is objective. In the original Great Bay, you do indeed swim quickly through nothing, a boring case of getting from A to B. In 3D enemies and objects drop magic to incentivise engaging with the environment and thinking about your route. The changes to the bosses put them in line with the rest of the Zelda games by making them, you know, bosses instead of glorified enemies. The Twinmold fight especially introduces a unique mechanic instead of "fight when small, now fight when big".
At least you admit to having a clear bias to the original at least?

I love the fact that you can play these old games through their subscription, makes it worth it, but my only complaints of those retro console apps are that there isn’t wide screen mode, which is a bit fine, but the fact you can’t map controls is a bit annoying. I’m a newer fan to Zelda, and it took me a bit to transfer control muscle memory from BOTW to OOT. None the less, I’ve had fun playing both OOT and MM, and I can’t wait to see what more of the franchise I’ll be able to play

Do note that this version is NOT perfect. Here are some notable issues and differences:
    - Supposedly switch pro controllers do not walk straight (I have not verified this myself, but I've seen both speedrunners and casual players talk about this)
    - The newer style of explosion that Majora's mask uses over ocarina of time does not display correctly.
    - There is notable input delay, which although not as bad as OOT on the launch of the expansion pack, is still pretty noticeable (may cause problems with the postman's timing minigame)
    - The sky texture does not display correctly and may appear to shake
    - The game has a graphical delay that causes a timing discrepancy between controller vibration and visuals on the screen
    - The pictobox takes a substantially longer amount of time to take pictures
    - Certain particle effects do not display, including certain projectiles as well as the deku flower particles that appear when you bury yourself
    - The texture created by sword strikes often displays incorrectly, being a muted white instead of a vibrant flash
    - The flash created when shooting the balloons at Romani ranch does not display correctly, often appearing completely invisible
    - Not a huge deal necessarily but there are many timing and lag discrepancies that make some areas lag less but also make certain speedrunning tricks significantly harder, such as pause buffering
    - Some particle effects display as the wrong color, such as Goht's lightning displaying as white rather than blue (this may be a related problem to the sword strike issue)
    - The flash created by shooting the ghosts at Romani ranch displays significantly brighter, causing other lighting issues to appear across the whole ranch for a couple of frames (including black circles that appear around the ghosts themselves. I believe it also displays for a frame longer than normal but nothing too extreme)
    - The lasers created by the final boss do not display correctly, including both the laser itself and the fire particles it creates (the particles being the same issue as the explosions)
    OVERALL:
Obviously most of these things barely matter. It remains that the best way of playing the game is either on an original N64 or through a 3rd party emulator, but the biggest issues are the same as what they've been across all NSO n64 games (save for the input delay, which is pretty terrible)
The things to keep in mind are that the controller options for NSO aren't very good at the moment, the expansion pack itself is 50 dollars for very few features (at least for now,) and if you wanted to try any speedrunning tricks, many will remain mostly inaccessible or inconsistent due to the other issues. If you are dead set on playing this version, I'd advise picking up either a third party gamecube controller adapter designed for NSO or an official bluetooth N64 controller, unless you REALLY don't notice when controls are off.

      @Kelphelp  2 роки тому +1

Alot of great input here, thanks so much for taking the time to write them out!

In the case of Majora's Mask I bought back in 2000 for a staggering $70 😱, then I bought again for the Wii for 12 bucks and finally $40 for the God awful remake, now they expect me to pay more money for a version which I bought twice before? Fast forward to now, I am 35... sooo still love play video games but somehow N64 desire us all with their Cartridge and not needed to be an disc which made their value worth more. Mclassic upscale to 4k did help alot if playing on 4k tv, worth getting it if want to feel like OG again which its nothing wrong with that if you got the money.

OOT, MM, Starfox64 specifically make my up be up and my down be down, it confuses me so much when I press up and my aiming goes off or when playing SF64 my Arwing does down when I push up my brain just doesn't work like that when so many other games the inversion is an option or something you can change in a controls/ options menu.

Seriously...the biggest complaint about the game is how it looks?? The 64 version looked great for it's time, but is easily the worst version of MM. If the Switch has done nothing different but smooth the graphics some, then it's easily the 2nd wrost version and not worth the $50 sub to play. The best version of MM to play is the 3DS verion. The graphics look amazing and the major problem the 64 version had, you HAD to have a guide in order to be able to do all the sidequests, is fixed with the Bomber's Notebook recording the time sensitive sidequests. So if you stumbled across part of one, you at least had a chance to try and figure it's sequence out without outside help. That is the 1 major issue MM had that made it bad, and the 3DS Remake fixed it. If the Switch is just an upscaled port of the 64, then it's also garbage, go get the 3DS one.
