I just went to check that. That's a very interesting observation. Then maybe unlike Hyrule, the Terminians might just not have a religion around it and its more an ancient one from the old days of Ikana? A very interesting theory to look at. Love comments like these.
a lot of common theories from what I recall is the triforce was the symbol of ancient enemies to ikana and that is why the triforce is there as a symbol being mocked (ties with the Tower of Babel to usurp the gods and the light arrows thus turning the world upside down as punishment) though nothing in interviews really covers that from what I recall though the explanation is fitting
To corroborate the south and eastern clock towns being one at some points, in the final game (I'm on Wii vc) on the map in south clock town, it still has the white dot for a door at the shooting gallery, despite it usually just showing doors for the current area
The Great Bay archery range is probably copy pasted from ocarina. The non rendered npc is definitely the Gerudo who tends the archery range. Since her model is probably tied to the Ocarina Assets, it probly wasn't implemented completely. But they kept her code to make an archery mini game there. Or it is tied to the Gerudo as a whole.

i kinda want to make a mod for MM that makes it go for the original idea of it taking place over a real world week. one of my concepts: in the base game Gorman goes the the mayor's office on day one, so it only makes sense that he arrived on day -1 late at night after closing of the office. went to the stock pot inn and started his stay. so him and his troupe come in on what would be day 3. and while staying on topic of the stock pot in you will have to wait for day 4 (day 1) to have "your" reservation booked. also the bombers will run a newspaper
Thank you for all this insight, this was a very well done video. The information you know on OoT and MM is beyond astounding. (subscribed) Immediately a fan
7 days cycle could've solved most people issues with the game, many hated the time limit that kill the Zelda famous freedom of exploration, 7 Days is really what should've been.
The timing of this is actually pretty good, considering I just started another playthrough of Majora's Mask the other day. The goal is to get 100% in as few cycles as possible (my current record is 6). I even mentioned to my mom about the one year development cycle and the originally planned seven days. The bumper was always my favorite beta element for this game, really wish it was included.
@@youraverageyoutubeuser6608 This is more of a general overview of things, considering I'm two cycles in already and my plans shuffle around with every run, but here's what I have so far. For cycle 1, in addition to the usual required things, there's a couple of things that you can do normally- namely, the Deku Playground HP and grinding for the Adult's Wallet. Starting this run, I'm also using the ability to go out of ECT as a Deku (by moonwalking) to be able to get the Bat Tree HP and the Woodfall Map sooner as well as speed up said grinding. Now if only the butterflies could spawn in cycle 1 so I could find the Peahat hole... Cycle 2 had me gather up some things in and around Clock Town before starting on the Woodfall area. Thanks to the Inverted Song of Time, I was able to get the Sonata of Awakening before Night 1. After a pit stop back at Clock Town for more gathering, including getting the Big Bomb Bag, I did the Woodfall Temple and the Swamp Spider House. It's around the start of Night 2 when I went off to Snowhead to go though that whole area. It was already Day 3 by the time I finished Snowhead Temple, so I made sure to get the Bunny Hood as well as a few miscellaneous Heart Pieces. It's at this point that I implemented another sequence break, the Goron Jump, which allows you to go over the fences you normally need Epona to go over using the Goron Mask and Bombs. Thus, I was able to get the Zora Mask, the Owl Statues of Great Bay, and the Stone Mask earlier than intended, which will really speed things up for cycle 3. I could've even gotten the Hookshot, but I was getting worn out since I was doing both cycles back-to-back. (Next time around, I'm only doing one cycle per session.) Since I'm going for the Gilded Sword in cycle 3, I'll be without a sword most of that cycle. Turns out there's a lot you can do without a sword. In my case, I'll be doing all the sidequests involving Romani and Cremia, the first round of the Anju-Kafei Romance, getting the New Wave Bossa Nova, and a bunch of minigames in the meantime. After all of that, there's one last sequence break I'll want to do- it involves climbing Ikana Canyon without the Ice Arrows. Cycle 4 begins with the Oceanside Spider House, then beating Goht a third time so I can start collecting frogs, then getting the Song of Storms, and then finally doing the Great Bay Temple. After that, it's mostly Ikana stuff to get the Elegy of Emptiness, opening the final Owl Statue and buying the All-Night Mask. Cycle 5 is mainly dedicated to round two of the Anju-Kafei Romance and Storytime with Granny, interspersed with grinding for the Bank HP and any cleanup I still need to do. Cycle 6 is all endgame, with all that should be left at that point is the Stone Tower Temple, the miniboss rematch HP, the Couple's Mask HP and everything to do on (in?) the moon. If all of this sounds crazy, just think- someone out there has somehow figured out how to do everything in four cycles. FOUR!
So, an update: later on in the day after my previous reply, I realized that four cycles is more than just the record. It's also the _minimum_ for 100%. This is because you can't get the All-Night Mask and the Couple's Mask in the same cycle (because of Sakon), nor can you get their resulting Heart Pieces in the same cycle that you get the mask. And obviously, you can't get any masks in cycle 1. Because of this, I ended up moving getting the Couple's Mask up to cycle 3, allowing me to combine my plans for the last two cycles into one. Therefore, five cycles is my new record. While I still haven't looked up the path for 4 cycles, I'm pretty sure I know what would need to be done. If I'm right, it involves rushing to clear the Oceanside Spider House on day 1 of cycle 2.
The "huh, don't tell me that's..." from the guard is likely old code from mido in oot. They use the same blocking code, and mido says that when he sees you have the kokiri sword.
24:20 the barber looks kinda like elvis, thinking about it the happy mask salesman has a mask on his pack with a face also similar to elvises face. In the alk of blue fire, it could be that they decided to repurpose the Blue Fire's Mechanic of Melting Red Ice, to the Warm Spring Water's Mechanic of Melting Normal Ice. It functions relatively the same, minus the whole becoming Spring Water thing.
my head canon for MM is that Termina is an area like or is LO-Rule. I think each golden triforce represents a timeline, and the shadow triangle in the center is Lo-Rule / Termina. Just how Ganon used his connection to the triforce to create the dark realm in aLttP, link used his connection to the triforce to create termina. Maybe this is how new universes are birthed in this reality. Ganon, Link and Zelda create realms using the triforce, just like the original 3 gods created hyrule. Maybe they where not "gods" but just beings from a previous universe that interacted with the triforce, and when they created a "dark version" of their reality, it was the birth of hyrule.
46:40 That fountain looks VERY similar to the one used in Ocarina of Time, in Hyrule Castle, in the section where you sneak in to meet Zelda. Maybe the developers intended to re-use the water spout asset after polishing the texture a little, but eventually discarded the idea?
Man, for some reason I recall the game getting pretty rough reviews when the game came out. Its one of the reasons I didnt bother with the game. I kinda wish I did play it, I still never have to this day.
Link Mask theory, Skull Kid would steal Link's face at the beginning and be able to transform into Link. Skull kid would cause mayhem disguised as Link and Link would have to prove his innocence. This concept would later be reused in Super Mario Sunshine.
Hopefully, this year we will get more Gigaleaks style for old Nintendo games cause I wanna see the beta versions of Paper Mario before the recent games starting from 3DS to now Switch. lol
There are many theories as to who the Link ounterpart is, from Fierce Diety...to even Tingle- [no I'm not joking] but it makes sense when you start thinking about it
The child artwork next to the barber isn't a beta bomber. The bombers are based on the graveyard child in OoT. And the blue haired girl in the milkbar isn't the treasure chest owner, but the bombchu bowling one
Dude I love the idea of a 7 day cycle. I think the current 3 day cycle where we enter Termina right as the moon falling turns into an almost undeniable fact for the residents IS really fun, but imagine starting on day 1 of 7. You look up at the sky and can see the small speck of the moon. Not unusual. You find the astrologist and he talks about how the moon looks odd lately. You play the game as normal. On day 3 you happen to look into the sky. Wait, does the moon have a face? And it is bigger... Residents start talking, you flail around, still a deku scrub in your first cycle. "Maybe the moon is falling," people start to whisper. Then days 5-7 would pretty much play out as usual. I understand how playing 7 days would get boring, though, and ultimately 3 days works a lot better.
I disagree with you that Termina has no concept of Hyrule, there are several lore elements that suggest in terminas past the people knew about and eventually rejected the goddesses of Hyrule, eventually going so far as to try and build a tower to the Heavens (stone tower) in defiance of the goddesses in loyalty to Majora, I think it's more likely that it was closed due to either Holy intervention OR Willful isolation by the Terminians in rejection of Hyrule's religion. Plus let's not forget that occording to OoT shadow temple Hyrule :Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred, Perhaps Termina became disillusioned towards the goddesses of Hyrule and decided to seal themselves off to avoid becoming casualties of a much stronger force, I mean, look at the guards, I doubt 4 guards and 1 captain could defend Termina from an assult from Hyrule, anyway that was my half-thought out drunken ramble about...wait what was my point again?
Hey, just wanted to say that I loved this video. But also, as a nerdy mexican, I will be that 🤓 person and tell: - Those pointy buildings in concept arts are more like arabic and/or oriental in general, most of prehispanic buildings are also pretty cubical, especially in places like Perú. And maybe that desingn is the reason why it was chosen, it was probably easier to model.
There's a ROM Hack called Masked Quest that includes some of the unused stuff here, Like Skullkid wearing the Human Link Mask, the Moon segment cutscenes, Red Tektites and the giant green bouncy things. It's pretty awful though, don't play it.
Fun fact: The gerudo symbol was actually replaced in the N64 version of OoT. It was shortly after release day while they were still printing cartidges. It was not changed specifically for the gamecube release
I know a few youtubers have mentioned what I said. I just booted my copy of OoT N64 thinking I would be able to prove it. but no. I have the crescent and star....
@@zackonark2658 yeah it's widely thought that, but simply isn't true haha. I just remember it from when the GameCube came out that it was a noticable change
You have the notebook in game. Other than possibly needing a real notebook, having to remember things for 7 days shouldn't be difficult with muscle memory.
The only area I had wished you had covered was the use of the Deku form of the Elegy of Emptiness. Good video though but that was one area I wished you had addressed.
Huh, you neglected to mention the Zora crest seen on the floor in the beta Spider House map’s entrance, though it could simply have been a placeholder while they came up with the final design.
I'm much of an optimist and say all the extra features were good. I am actually more a fan of the snow islands being higher up. And the fact the poison swamp doesn't have its mountain update to be a green one with flowing water is actually surprising: you'd expect areas like that to of visually changed the most, it must of just slipped under the allotted time limit to not be included.
In that concept art of the town full of mask-wearing people. the one in the center with the droopy nose and the leaves around the bottom edge looks a lot like the Four Giants. I'm pretty sure that's all that mask was supposed to be. I don't think any of the other masks are directly connected to any of the masks in the final game. The Fierce Deity mask came about because while working on the game, one of the leads decided "Just becoming an adult doesn't seem very interesting or fun." _Talk about relatable._
I wish there was a version of this game where are the moons position starts on the 2nd day of the 7-Day cycle making it 6 days. What could have been done was in the words of the Great American Myles Standish cut it in half and double it. Instead of 6 days make it three and have the moon fall twice as fast. I wonder how the fans would have reacted to that. Because as it stands in the original version the moon falls at a glacial pace of which matpat of game theory show does being problematic.
I would prefer a 7 day cycle. You wouldn't even have to change the NPC or event schedules that much, and could just spread them out to be able to do everything in a single cycle, except for stuff like the Postman's Hat/Madam Bottle where you have to choose.
Nobody mentions the unused Deku Stick/Nut capacities. ¦( There are four of each. 10, 20, 30 and 40. They're indeed savable after playing song of time. Obviously a leftover, but definitely the most underrated.
Y’know, I find it to be so bizarre that Miyamoto always wants to do these side projects using recycled assets. > Ura Zelda was going to be Ocarina of Time 1.5 > Super Mario Galaxy 2 was originally going to be SMG 1.5 > Link’s Crossbow training was forced into being a side project rather than letting it be the Twilight Princess sequel the devs wanted It makes me wonder if Miyamoto worked as an artist, then worked in game design, then finally became more of a business staff member that focused more on generating profit than letting creativity flow freely. It’s obviously far cheaper and safer to recycle old assets, mix in something new, and release a remix of an existing title than to build a new entry into a series like Majora’s Mask was. I’m so glad Aonuma was able to complete MM, because he stood on the side of the art of the medium while Miyamoto was more of a corporatist bean counter focused largely on the company’s bottom line than the life of the Zelda series itself.
What I still don't understand about Ura Zelda is that if it was just Master Quest, wouldn't they have been able to finish it within a year? Also, why would they need the N64DD when they could have loaded it onto an expansion pack cartridge that could change OoT when it's loaded?

a lot of common theories from what I recall is the triforce was the symbol of ancient enemies to ikana and that is why the triforce is there as a symbol being mocked (ties with the Tower of Babel to usurp the gods and the light arrows thus turning the world upside down as punishment) though nothing in interviews really covers that from what I recall though the explanation is fitting
Holy shit balls just 22 seconds in and already seeing the exact magazine page I saw as a 12 year old back in either late 99 or early 2000 with early screenshot images and still called zelda Gaiden , remember standing at the back of my local store by the mags in awe and my imagination ran wild with excitement
I just wish we could have seen the 7 day cycle and had Ganondorf and Shiek at the fishing holes. Didn't even happen on MM3D
I still am curious how that Shiek and Ganondorf models in the fishing hole in MM3d was so supposed to work? Terminian verisions of them??
@@TheObsessiveGamer Seems to be the case. Impa too was one of the included fishing characters.
I mean seeing a terminian counterpart to Ganondorf being a fisher man would be interesting.
@@ghoulchan7525 Just imagine Young Link seeing that the person who was the king of evil from Hyrule is now a simple fisherman in Termina, that would make one hell of a scene.
7 days would have made me more likely to play it! The 3 day limit stresses me out way too much
Maybe the moon falling asleep is why it started crashing, if Skull Kid made it fall asleep and that's why it started getting ready to crash into Termina?
What... the fuck... HOW DO YOU NOT HAVE MORE SUBS BY NOW!?!? Your channel has some of the most amazing cut content videos I've seen! I'm honestly shocked that your not even more popular, your content is really good! I am excited to see the day when you hit 1 million subs! You'll make it there, I believe in you! We all believe in you!
Because it sucks
i kinda want to make a mod for MM that makes it go for the original idea of it taking place over a real world week.
one of my concepts: in the base game Gorman goes the the mayor's office on day one, so it only makes sense that he arrived on day -1 late at night after closing of the office. went to the stock pot inn and started his stay. so him and his troupe come in on what would be day 3. and while staying on topic of the stock pot in you will have to wait for day 4 (day 1) to have "your" reservation booked.
also the bombers will run a newspaper
I never get tired of seeing videos on my favorite Zelda games! 🥰
Glad I can make that a reality :D
Thank you for all this insight, this was a very well done video. The information you know on OoT and MM is beyond astounding. (subscribed) Immediately a fan
7 days cycle could've solved most people issues with the game, many hated the time limit that kill the Zelda famous freedom of exploration, 7 Days is really what should've been.
but it definitely would have dragged
The timing of this is actually pretty good, considering I just started another playthrough of Majora's Mask the other day. The goal is to get 100% in as few cycles as possible (my current record is 6). I even mentioned to my mom about the one year development cycle and the originally planned seven days. The bumper was always my favorite beta element for this game, really wish it was included.
Ooh 6 cycles is already pretty good. Hope you enjoy! 100% is always fun with this game.
Really curious about your route for this. 6 cycles seems extremely fast especially considering how long the Great Bay, Ikana, and wedding quests are.
(Next time around, I'm only doing one cycle per session.)
Since I'm going for the Gilded Sword in cycle 3, I'll be without a sword most of that cycle.
This was such a cool and informative video and it was wonderful to watch the beta assets in depth. Thank you!
Perhaps at they just wanted a way to tribute elvis and couldn't fit in the charachter so they just made him a mask. (Or maybe the salesman played the song of healing lol.)
I think the masks in the concept art are meant to be abstract depictions of the giants
That is one possibility as well
New subscriber! I’ve been going through your backlog. Love the content. I’ve listened to so much cut content stuff but I’m still learning new things from these! Great job!
Yay! more cut content videos 😸 I love watching these, keep up the good work 😊
Thank you! Got plenty more planned
@@TheObsessiveGamer Nice!
"Mask of Mujula" It sounds peculiarly folkloric but not very commercial to sell
46:40
That fountain looks VERY similar to the one used in Ocarina of Time, in Hyrule Castle, in the section where you sneak in to meet Zelda.
Well it's marmite you either love it or hate it and I'm the former
Don't know what reviews you were looking at but all I saw was 9/10 and 96% review ratings for MM in 2000
Glad to see another one of these just!
One thing I think you forgot to mention at 3:34 is that the skybox is from ocarina of Time
Guess so, but it is quite a small detail
Link Mask theory,
Skull Kid would steal Link's face at the beginning and be able to transform into Link. Skull kid would cause mayhem disguised as Link and Link would have to prove his innocence. This concept would later be reused in Super Mario Sunshine.
Hopefully, this year we will get more Gigaleaks style for old Nintendo games cause I wanna see the beta versions of Paper Mario before the recent games starting from 3DS to now Switch. lol
I never thought of the counterpart for link in termina, kafei wouldve been an awesome character model for a counterpart
There are many theories as to who the Link ounterpart is, from Fierce Diety...to even Tingle- [no I'm not joking] but it makes sense when you start thinking about it
kafei IS the counterpart
The child artwork next to the barber isn't a beta bomber. The bombers are based on the graveyard child in OoT.
And the blue haired girl in the milkbar isn't the treasure chest owner, but the bombchu bowling one
Awesome vid man! Learned lots today about my favorite game's development
If you haven't already seen it, the TCRF page for Majora's Mask is an absolute goldmine
Also, they did bring back the fishing mini game in the 3DS remake so someone at Nintendo must of listened because we finally got it. :)
I’d love a remake where they finish all 7 days
Imagine the gerudo guards kicking out fierce deity link. He is so large compared to them. And I can only picture how they would kick him out
Dude I love the idea of a 7 day cycle.
I would have loved to see more of Zelda in Majora's Mask.
Skull kid wearing a Link mask would have been really cool story. Shout out to shadow Link
I like ya, you're funny.
Hey, just wanted to say that I loved this video. But also, as a nerdy mexican, I will be that 🤓 person and tell:
- Those pointy buildings in concept arts are more like arabic and/or oriental in general, most of prehispanic buildings are also pretty cubical, especially in places like Perú. And maybe that desingn is the reason why it was chosen, it was probably easier to model.
The moon looks a lot like the album cover of Momo Sampler by Patricio Rey, which, coincidentally, came out in the same year. Look it up.
At 58:56 I would almost expect the woodcutters wife's deformity to have been... intentional.
Its Majora's Mask after all.
The Link counterpart to me looks like a Termina counterpart to Saria, but it's hard to tell without any color
Now that you mention it, none of the kokori have counterparts, unless you count the bomberkids.
There's a ROM Hack called Masked Quest that includes some of the unused stuff here, Like Skullkid wearing the Human Link Mask, the Moon segment cutscenes, Red Tektites and the giant green bouncy things.
It's pretty awful though, don't play it.
25:29 I think the mask in the front, and the masks on the clock tower with the stairway, are supposed to represent or resemble the 4 giants.
dude I love this video, I've watched it all the way thru like 5x at least! LOVE IT and your other vids👍 keep that shit up !
I finally catch one of your videos live instead of the day after 😊
Haha, victory!
Fun fact: The gerudo symbol was actually replaced in the N64 version of OoT. It was shortly after release day while they were still printing cartidges. It was not changed specifically for the gamecube release
Actually it wasn't. Version 1.2 of the N64 cart still have the moon and star. It was the GameCube version that did it first
I know a few youtubers have mentioned what I said.
6:42 is that Stone Temple Tower in the distance?
The only area I had wished you had covered was the use of the Deku form of the Elegy of Emptiness. Good video though but that was one area I wished you had addressed.
I think at 56 minutes and 5 seconds the soldier may have been referring to a mask that Link was wearing, like the Keaton mask or something.
Huh, you neglected to mention the Zora crest seen on the floor in the beta Spider House map’s entrance, though it could simply have been a placeholder while they came up with the final design.
Quite sure the barber didn't become the mail man, seeing as that model was already used for the running man in OoT.
I'm amazed they never did Majora's Mask 2 and used their original ideas like the full week and using the internal clock.
At the same time I do wonder how they would make it work since this only could work cause the world was ending?
@51:13 Funnily, it also looks like the Pokemon Tree from Sword and Shield
Your videos are great. You're the modern Beta 64.
Haha thanks! I do think my content still does differ in that I do try to also include history with it, but glad you enjoy it all!
@@TheObsessiveGamer Yeah, I always look forward to your uploads.
The masks in the concept art from Granny's story is the giant's mask.
Well, they did a damn good job. Majora's mask is a masterpiece.
Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 lost content. As well as lost content videos from various fighting games
Actually, Clock Town and Ikana’s architecture is more similar to West African architecture than Meso-American
Great job!
My favorite retro zelda game
One of mine as well and glad to deliver it on it
I'm not sure what's more depressing.
That the end of the world would be on a saturday or that the start of the end of the world would be on a monday.
I would prefer a 7 day cycle.
You wouldn't even have to change the NPC or event schedules that much, and could just spread them out to be able to do everything in a single cycle, except for stuff like the Postman's Hat/Madam Bottle where you have to choose.
And the Great Fairy training. Clearly superior.
I wonder why the 3D remake didn't include any of this cut content. Seems like a wasted opportunity.
31:10 it would've made more sense to have a worm in a swamp temple and a giant sword warrior in a dungeon where you become giant
Love your videos! Can't wait to watch this one 💗
Thank you! Hope you enjoy it!
Ngl I'm kinda sad they cut the great fairy scenes, those were cute.
47:00 isn't that big fence used in the Oceanside Spider House?
I really love these so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Finally, a competent youtuber calling Majora's Mask 3D a remaster instead of a remake. So many people don't understand the difference.
More like remakester
It IS a remake. Not every remake needs to be FF7 in order to qualify.
Nobody mentions the unused Deku Stick/Nut capacities. ¦(
There are four of each.
10, 20, 30 and 40.
They're indeed savable after playing song of time.
Obviously a leftover, but definitely the most underrated.
All of these would be awesome for rom hacking/mods
love these vids!
Thanks!
25:00 those mask are just carneval mask's, since thats what it all leads up to
Y’know, I find it to be so bizarre that Miyamoto always wants to do these side projects using recycled assets.
> Ura Zelda was going to be Ocarina of Time 1.5
> Super Mario Galaxy 2 was originally going to be SMG 1.5
> Link’s Crossbow training was forced into being a side project rather than letting it be the Twilight Princess sequel the devs wanted
It makes me wonder if Miyamoto worked as an artist, then worked in game design, then finally became more of a business staff member that focused more on generating profit than letting creativity flow freely.
Fantastic video
Thanks!
Damn imagine them letting the N64 life cycle end and they took the time to make this a release title for the GameCube.
