Gossip Girl singlehandedly saved me from so many horrible 2010's trends that I would have regretted now. I do not regret my Blair Waldorf phase and can STILL wear pieces I bought as a 12-year-old and I'm 26 now. I bought a gorgeous houndstooth blazer in like 7th grade that I STILL love. In the 2010s I was pretty young (18 now) since I didn't have much choice over my clothes I was not saved. Did a closet clear out in the first lockdown and have thrown out basically everything from the 2010s. I've never been happier, better investments from now on.
A video that I would LOVE to see from you, is a brief overview of each major/currently relevant fashion house: Gucci, YSL, Chanel, Armani, Louis Vuitton, etc. What is their history and general aesthetic? What does it mean to you when a character wears them?
Clever and Chic has done videos on some of those fashion houses. She’s also done Blair, Serena and Jenny style breakdowns based on their character development.
Ahh the tights trend was my favorite. I visited nyc around the time this show had started and I saw sooo many girls walking around the city with cute tights! I also remember buying a leopard print silky bubble skirt at a discount shop in Nyc lol. I still have it! So iconic.
Omg same I visited NYC in 2008 for the first time and I bought my first pair of tights and they’re just my favourite trend to come out of GG I still wear them to this day. I just love how they make legs look
I dressed like Serena and Jenny’s(season 2 - till her final season) love child. I have no regrets. I went to a private school and the one time I couldn’t find my sweater which was part of the uniform , I just grabbed a cardigan that had skulls on it(because at the time it was the only sweater I had) and while I got chewed out for violating the dress code, I like that I was able to take a risk with clothes and not be afraid to stand out without even thinking. The only regret I have is not having a picture from that day😜

Inmo Serena always looked like someone else dressed her and she didn’t really care about it. It often felt like her outfits wore her and not the other way around. Blair’s outfits always perfectly matched her mood and symbolized what she was going through in that specific moment.
10/10 my favorite video to date. As a younger millennial watching this show, I remember all of these fashion trends being pushed by the characters like they were historic events 😆 when Jenny came back as “dark Jenny” it was such a great look for visual contrast, but the consistency of Serena and Blair’s styling throughout the show was so amazing to watch. Love it 🥰
tights might be my favorite here, they are timeless and there are so many different types to experiment with!! id love to see you do buffy's style evolution throughout buffy the vampire slayer
I never realized how much blair's fadhion influenced me til all of the gossip girl videos cropped up. To this day i still have a massive collection of colourful tights and headbands and i find myself wear simplified versions of her looks, or at least similar silhouettes
same here! i still adore headbands and i just know blair is the entire reason for that and i hate that it's not as common to wear headbands nowadays lmfao
I think it a similar video about Skins would be great, although I don't think it really influenced the fashion choices of teenagers but throughout the seasons you can notice the shift from 2000s to the 2010s fashion :) But thank you very much for this video, I never watched gossip girl but it still was interesting :)
My best friend in highschool obsessively recreated Effie's outfits. She even made some pieces herself like the distressed clothes. And you know that one famous outfit with the blue mini dress and the fishnets and the many long necklaces. My friend wore that to school all of the time
wow this is actually blowing my mind... i never watched this show but grew up reading magazines like seventeen and teen vogues religiously. always wondered where this specific tacky-bright-vintage-preppy aesthetic of my childhood came from, and why it took me so long to break away and find my personal style. makes so much sense now!
i never watched gossip girl but i definitely participated in most of these trends. i still have a red wool peacoat from like 2010 that would probably fit perfectly on one of the background characters in gossip girl, maybe a "poor" character since the coat was reasonably priced lol. i also wore a lot of tights/socks and ballet flats. i tried to do a peter pan collared shirt (a la zoella) for a little while but i realized i don't like necklines that high. this was kind of the same time as taylor swifts red era so i was also very much inspired by her style at that time
This sounds odd but I'd love a glee style analysis. I feel like all of their styles changed so much particularly Rachel and it's the perfect example of the transition from the 2000's to the 2010's.
Jenny definitely had my favorite style (specifically season 3-6) because it was actually Taylor Momsen's style and influenced by her music (which was the reason she left the show.) I may heavily dislike Jenny, but her style is iconic
The amount of trends I've unconsciously picked up from this show.. the ballet flats, the silks scarves, the love of metallics. It's definitely shaped MY sense of style

It is always so nice to see all the best looks of this show, displayed here in an analysis. I personnaly LOVED Blair's outfits because it was so unique and perfectly gathered. And as a fan of the 60s style, I could spot her inspiration of the era in EVERY outfit, there was always a little detail. Also I think Chuck had also the best male style, on an original point of view, the matching was perfect with Blair as he had that preppy chic and colorful dandy look. This show will ALWAYS be iconic for its fashion.
can we talk about how euphoria literally set off an entire generations love of fashion! it’s like our gossip girl in a way...obviously the content is completely different but we didn’t get to experience the impact of gossip girl in real time bc we were in elementary school, but now we were able to experience a crazy fashion impact from euphoria:)
I didn’t watch this show as it came out but I was in that age demographic and it’s cool to see what trends I loved then and how they must have been initially brought up in this show.
I have this specific memory of the moment I realized tv had not always been hugely fashion-conscious. I never got to watch Tru Calling when it first aired, but then at some point it became available on a streaming service. The main character wore mostly spaghetti-strap tanks and henleys, so it wasn’t super easy to tell if her clothes were expensive, but at some point her sidekick came in and I was like “good grief, that’s polyester from the mall…” Like, it was the kind of top available at my price point, with a contrast waistband that didn’t even go all the way around. It made all the sense in the world that these characters wouldn’t have a lot to spend on clothes, but at this point I had gotten so used to tv ALWAYS being about fashion on some level, regardless of what the characters could realistically afford.
as a psychology major who loves fashion & sociology, i live for your videos. i kinda study with them in a way! thank you for the effort u put in. u deserve more subs!!
This show's influence was truly insane. I remember not watching it ever, and not liking headbands; I also remember going to the store to get velvet ribbon to DIY Blair's specific headpiece, and wearing it for weeks. The fashion was literally so good you were bound to want something from them
I didn't watch gossip girl back then, didn't exactly know what it was exactly until around 2012 and actually watching it the costume design is so impressive
The thing about classy style is that if you do it right, you'll always stand out. That's why Blair stands out more than Serena, who followed the trends.
I never saw the show, but I did wear a school uniform in the early 2010s, so the tights and headbands were huge for me for sure because they were ways that I could style my school uniform without breaking the dress code.
Love that you focused on the evolution of its fashion from late 2000s to early 2010s and its impact beyond! Its so interesting to see that evolution within the show itself
I think the usage of these unrealistic clothes was what elevated the show to a real "high society" show. The characters wore a lot of clothes that we as "normal people" couldn't even imagine wearing, because it was a display of wealth, really. Like, the fact that they wore full-blown gawns every other episode and that they were always carrying handbags and not backpacks, it was impossible to not be starstruck by them all. It was so out of our reality that it added to the reasons why people wanted to keep watching the show. It made them more believable as old money rich, because the characters, especially Blair and Chuck, kept the old money vibe by wearing this preppy style all the time. Blair and Chuck were all about protecting tradition and carrying the family legacy, so they wanted people to see them as rich, serious, classic, powerful. Serena was more free-spirited in her way of dressing, boho chic as you said, and I believe it's because her mother was all about the family name and keeping an image of the perfect family, and this made Serena wants to go against her family and her own "world" (reason why she dates Dan), so it makes sense that she would wear more modern clothes, a mix between old money and new money, preppy but sort of relatable, light, trying to show the world that she was her own person and not just a Van der Woodsen. I would say her style is easier to copy and to use in the day to day life. Nate also has a preppy but relatable style, in the sense that it's easier to copy his looks because they are more basic than Chuck's, for example.
Watching this now, I'm realizing how much Serena's style influenced my own in the 2000's. Now my style is a mix of Serena's and Jenny's, a bit of boho, a bit of rock
As a girl studying fashion design at the time Gossip Girl was running, it had a huge influence on me. I owned a boatload of headbands in every color and style imaginable. Blair was definitely my fashion icon at the time. Then as time passed by, I really began to embrace the edgy look and I gained inspiration from Jenny Humphrey who influenced my love for leather jackets.
I just started watching gossip girl a week ago and I’m already on season 4 and honestly so mad I put off watching this show cause this show is amazing a little messy but amazing and the fashions are just top tier
Serena’s knee high boots and plaid skirts and ties lived in my head rent-free for years! When I moved out at 18, one of the first articles of clothing I sourced were neck ties. Now that I’m a bit older, my style is a bit more like Blair’s, so the ties get paired with collared shirts instead of over a tshirt, but the show has still had a lasting influence on me.
Blair's fashion is incredibly underrated for sure, but I always personally gravitated towards a combination of Serena + late season Jenny's styles. Like, Taylor's outfit in the centre at 14:39 is a dream outfit of mine. I love short skirts + high boots. Then again, I also just idolise Blake and Taylor in general 😂
I watched the show and read recaps religiously, and remember New York Magazine coining the term “cleavage rhombus” for Serena’s many cutout-detail dresses lol
Jenny in her goth days was and still is a style inspiration. I also really loved Serena’s gowns and fall boots. With the new gossip girl I am loving Audrey Hope’s closet and Luna La
I didn't go to a private school, but I went to a charter school with a very strictly enforced uniform (no colored hair ties, only solid black/white shoes with no big logos, only solid black jackets, etc). Girls always used purses, coats, tailoring, socks, etc to establish hierarchy. As well as hair styles and jewelry. I loved how gossip girl portrayed this, even though their uniform was muchhh less strict than mine, i liked how they used items like headbands and purses to show the cliques
Yes, I remember being obsessed with GG growing up but I hadn't realised that the way I dressed was THIS STRONGLY influenced by it until I watched this video! Head bands, tights, ballet flats, body-con dresses, even capes and hats in freaking India, I wore it all and wore it most of the time. TBH I don't connect with gen-z fashion at all and found myself losing the drive to be fashion-forward. But it felt exhilarated rewatching these outfits on-screen just now and I'm going to learn to imbibe the femine and over-dressed style of GG with modern times. I love it! Thank you so much

I think it’s so interesting that entire brands come in and out of trend. Now I can’t imagine Chanel falling out of grace and being a “grandma bag”. In that case, grandmothers are just high fashion lol
I think both, Chanel and Dior have a very strong marketing department. They know how to keep in “fashion” by sending products to celebrities or influencers. Even when it had its low, I think Chanel, or Dior could never get a low low like Kenzo, Valentino, etc.
@@AlvaroIbacacheS Chanel also has Jenny from BP and Dior has Jisoo from BP as their respective ambassadors. I doubt they'll be going anywhere anytime soon.
@@AlvaroIbacacheS Yeah, though keep in mind in that 2007-2012 era, influencers were not a thing yet until probably the tail end of the series' run, so there wasn't that vehicle to market these brands to younger audiences. I don't recall any girl around my age at the time even having Chanel (it was all Dooney & Boorke or Coach). Today though, it's not uncommon to see late-teen or twenty-somethings having Chanel.
IDC if Chanel will be out of style and will be seen as a grandma bag. I love Chanel. It's one of my favorite designers. Even without the help of influencers I would still like Chanel. My favorite designer is Ellie Saab but Chanel is also one of my favorites.
@@HannahDecember For me Chanel is the epitome of true elegance which makes them so timeless. Not what matter what era/decade it is, No.5 Chanel is always the most coveted perfume and the renowned 'cc' studs are death-worthy, you cannot pair an outfit wrong with those earrings! They actually auctioned off a lot of the clothes as the show was airing. I managed to buy (or, my parents did for me) a Gwen Stefani scarf worn by a character in the first episode (and was the actual garment worn in the show).

@@gabrielleporter553 yeahhhh I couldn't remember 2000's fashion as cute or elegant just Disney Channel crazy looks I remember I used to think they were terrible even back then.
lmao disney channel outfits at the time were very cringy and trying to hard on.a low budget. gg was so iconic for fashion. still is in my opinion. I adore most of the looks in the show and still aspire for serena's and jenny's wardrobes
I owe this dumb show my life!
I still dress like Blair Waldorf today! Lol :)
In the 2010s I was pretty young (18 now) since I didn't have much choice over my clothes I was not saved. Did a closet clear out in the first lockdown and have thrown out basically everything from the 2010s. I've never been happier, better investments from now on.
Jenny Humphrey turning edgy was what made me start learning to sew! I wanted to dress just like her when I was 14 lol
Are you into fashion?
could you do something on the old money aesthetic? i think it would be really interesting to see your perspective on it!
Oh yes!! That's a good one

Blair had such a cool, camp style at sometimes especially the outfits with colored tights or polka dots. She was such an icon
So iconic.
I had so many different kinds of tights then! I had a pair for every occasion.
The only regret I have is not having a picture from that day😜
Me too honestly. Although I didnt go to private school.
yess.. 2000s only remind me of disney stars' awful looks but GG totally changed my mind. I'm in love with blair waldorf's looks and seems like it needs a lot of effort lol
I don´t know if Pretty little Liars had such a big impact on fashion but I would LOVE for you to make this kind of video on it. I absolutely adore the way you analyse the fashion and characters in every single video of yours!

Say what you want about the Gossip Girl fashion. But it was definitely influential. I'm not an American and even I wanted to dress up like Blair.
Inmo Serena always looked like someone else dressed her and she didn’t really care about it. It often felt like her outfits wore her and not the other way around. Blair’s outfits always perfectly matched her mood and symbolized what she was going through in that specific moment.
I WAS *OBSESSED* WITH THIS SHOW
10/10 my favorite video to date. Love it 🥰
tights might be my favorite here, they are timeless and there are so many different types to experiment with!! id love to see you do buffy's style evolution throughout buffy the vampire slayer
i'm still obsessed with jenny's rocker aesthetic, she and blair influenced my style so much growing up 😩
I never realized how much blair's fadhion influenced me til all of the gossip girl videos cropped up. To this day i still have a massive collection of colourful tights and headbands and i find myself wear simplified versions of her looks, or at least similar silhouettes
Same :) I still love the preppy look
same here! i still adore headbands and i just know blair is the entire reason for that and i hate that it's not as common to wear headbands nowadays lmfao
I think it a similar video about Skins would be great, although I don't think it really influenced the fashion choices of teenagers but throughout the seasons you can notice the shift from 2000s to the 2010s fashion :)
But thank you very much for this video, I never watched gossip girl but it still was interesting :)
My best friend in highschool obsessively recreated Effie's outfits. She even made some pieces herself like the distressed clothes. And you know that one famous outfit with the blue mini dress and the fishnets and the many long necklaces. My friend wore that to school all of the time
The channel Clever and Chic has a video about the evolution of Effie's style from Skins. You might find it interesting!
@@kellygreengables3936 i have watched it and found it very interesting, and I wish they could make a video about for example Katie
I honestly love capes, ballet flats and t-strap heels.
wow this is actually blowing my mind... i never watched this show but grew up reading magazines like seventeen and teen vogues religiously. always wondered where this specific tacky-bright-vintage-preppy aesthetic of my childhood came from, and why it took me so long to break away and find my personal style. makes so much sense now!
i never watched gossip girl but i definitely participated in most of these trends. i still have a red wool peacoat from like 2010 that would probably fit perfectly on one of the background characters in gossip girl, maybe a "poor" character since the coat was reasonably priced lol. i also wore a lot of tights/socks and ballet flats. i tried to do a peter pan collared shirt (a la zoella) for a little while but i realized i don't like necklines that high. this was kind of the same time as taylor swifts red era so i was also very much inspired by her style at that time
It's been years and I'm still struggling to combine Blair Waldorf and Fran Fine fashion🥺🤧
It's definitely shaped MY sense of style
i will always remember watching gossip girl for the first time when it was airing and seeing blair's red gown and visibly gasping. it was the first-ever fashion moment that i remember being so amazed by
Blair💕💕
taking the seven universal styles:
Blair: elegant, romantic, creative
Serena: seductress, natural, romantic
Chuck: traditional, elegant, creative
I loooove Blair's style👏🌸🌸🌸
idk that I would say blair's style is that romanic. maybe preppy would be a better word?
@@alexdalton4535 yes, preppy is a sub-style that joins traditional/elegant and romantic. But she is risky too choosing different colour combinations and shapes, this is a creative feature 🌸🌸
@@tralaritralarajiju2652 hmm I actually view preppy as a slightly more masculine style actually!
@@alexdalton4535 great!👌

i’m obsessed with blair’s more simple preppy outfits. her and jenny had my favorite outfits on the show but jenny had the best overall style to me.
I hate when people call leggings “tights” lol they are definitely 2 different things, thank you for not confusing them
I would have thought the big confusion would be between tights, pantyhose and stockings. Most seem to use those terms interchangeably.

I remember I was obsessed with this show during my first and second year of college. I was not into fashion a lot, but I realy liked Blair's style and I embraced that side of me. That, along with my then bff, helped me to find my style, something I was too self aware to do so. I still keep my love for headbands even today hahahaha
oh my god... ballet flats are finally back! rewatching this after a year and i never could've predicted that
It is always so nice to see all the best looks of this show, displayed here in an analysis.
I wore a ton of headbands and still have a soft spot for them. And absolutely tons of tights on colors and prints.
You just randomly made me remember about the twin legally blondes. I looove that show the styling, their matching things and the accents!!
The fashion was literally so good you were bound to want something from them
I cant wait for you to talk the reboot omg
So… does this mean we’re getting a fashion analysis on each character of GG? 🤞🏼
I didn't watch gossip girl back then, didn't exactly know what it was exactly until around 2012 and actually watching it the costume design is so impressive
The fact that so many of these fashion trends are coming back is so cool
That Emily in Paris clip is *chefs kiss*
Blair's style was always my favorite iconic and timeless. She inspired my bright colored peacoat moments in high school
The thing about classy style is that if you do it right, you'll always stand out. That's why Blair stands out more than Serena, who followed the trends.
I love 2000s (and early 2010s) fashion, so fun!
I never saw the show, but I did wear a school uniform in the early 2010s, so the tights and headbands were huge for me for sure because they were ways that I could style my school uniform without breaking the dress code.
I personally like tights (though not in bright colors) and elevated boho chic. Flattering and comfy.
i can’t wait for those 6 inch stiletto pumps they always wore to come back in style bc those were a MOMENT
To this day, idk how the hell they walked in those pumps.
Love that you focused on the evolution of its fashion from late 2000s to early 2010s and its impact beyond! Its so interesting to see that evolution within the show itself
happily going back into my headband collection for this one
I’m so obsessed with this channel
I was obsessed with Serena’s sense of style particularly her night at the opera dress.
Notice how most of the trends were part of Blair’s character’s wardrobe
ICONIC
Omg this is the video I’ve been waiting for. I loved the style back then on GG. Even the interiors of their homes inspire many a Sim Build lol
im now realizing how much of an impact this had on my style even though i never watched the show
I LOVED the capes They were my favorite thing from Blair’s wardrobe
Love love your videos it got me really interested in fashion!
Same!! Its so entertaining and educational :D
Jenny’s dark skirt with contrast pink underlayer lives in my head rent free even to this day
I just started watching gossip girl a week ago and I’m already on season 4 and honestly so mad I put off watching this show cause this show is amazing a little messy but amazing and the fashions are just top tier
A video on that 70s show costume design would be amazing !!!
i still describe my style as "goth blair waldorf." her impact!
Then again, I also just idolise Blake and Taylor in general 😂
def adding the cape to my wardrobe this winter
I watched the show and read recaps religiously, and remember New York Magazine coining the term “cleavage rhombus” for Serena’s many cutout-detail dresses lol
I started watching around the time that season 3 came out and I was OBSESSED (and still am) with Blair and her style. Plus I loved all the storylines!
Blair's style is my favourite. It's the perfect combination of preppy and feminine
Jenny in her goth days was and still is a style inspiration. I also really loved Serena’s gowns and fall boots. With the new gossip girl I am loving Audrey Hope’s closet and Luna La
love ur vids so much !!
I liked Georgina’s style. I felt like hers was a mix between Blair’s and Serena’s with edgy color pallets
