Dan’s family was never supposed to be a “poor family.” Rufus was a pretty successful art gallery owner, not to mention a successful band member, even if it may or may not have been a one hit wonder and now mostly forgotten. He sends two kids to private school. Even considering the possibility of scholarship, it obviously shows that Dan is middle class or even upper middle class. They are just frugal (relatively) because they know their bank account is not bottomless.

Vanessa’s was irrelevant on Gossip Girl. I watched the show again a few months ago and realized that if she wasn’t in it it would still be the same show.
No it wouldn't because Vanessa was the one who got Dan's book famous in the first place and that book being published changed Dan's life.

Honestly, this show was super popular when I was in middle school but I didn't watch it until college and it frustrated me because I kept thinking "all these problems would be solved if you were just freaking honest with each other!!"
I feel the same. And the way they always went through each others belongings? That's so wrong! For me the role show was a critic on how rich people literally have everything, and they're so bored all they do is create drama haha

Dude try to volunteer on a kibbutz in Israel with a a small group of Mexicans from age 18-19. I swear if there was a way for me to upload the photo of the bottles the went through in the first month you would die of alcohol poisoning just from look at it. And it was mainly vodka bottles
Elena Ryan okay so twenty Jewish Mexican kids in Israel where vodka is Hella cheap. I kid you not, each of them went and bought at the very least five bottles a day. I remember they arrived at 1pm get to 4pm and they are sloshed. We still found about 180 more bottles than the original set of 400 they gathered in the cooking area
Because their parents are emotionally, and often physically, absent from their lives and don't care what they do as long as they don't publicly embarrass them. In the books, they did a looooot of drugs too, especially Nate.
How are they still all fit and sexy too?
Watching Gossip Girl in your twenties makes you see how Dan was right about all of them. Serena and Nate bounced from relationship to relationship including with married men/women and minors. They dropped out of college. The only pairing that had character growth was Blair and Chuck, and even Dan who saw right through them but still ended up marrying Serena at the end which was a total fail on the shows part. Nate and Serena should of ended up together since they are so much alike, and Dan with Vanessa.
nate and serena were both players which bothered me cause i liked them so much but their choice in partners was so whack like nate dated a 16yr old brat and a 40 yr old as well and serena had an affair with a politician and she didnt even realize how messed it was cause he was taken. i really wished the show showed them mature up and they end up together

She always played victim and never took responsibility for all the terrible things she did. Dans chapter was 100% correct and it still pains me that they ended up together

Blair & Chuck weren’t innocent by any means, but they did have the best character development and felt the most real to me. Serena was super shallow and never seemed to change at all throughout the show. Vanessa & Jenny are a WHOLE other story.🙄🙄

I rewatched Gossip Girl in my late twenties and realized that everybody’s it girl Serena was indeed a shallow socialite Dan portrayed her in his book. I mean, affair with a politician at 20, not attending college and not even working just living by? The worst was when se tried to defend herself against these accusations and I remember my teen self feeling sorry for her. I am amazed how I loved this character and she annoys me now just because my mindset matured. I guess we do grow up. Still an iconic show though and I still love it and my high school years wouldn’t have been complete without those headbands

THANK YOU. it was alwayssss about serena. she was always the victim and never had to truly take responsibility for anything. also one of the most selfish characters. plus she literally got every single thing handed to her and expects everyone to cater to her. she’s the worst character in my opinion. at least blair worked to earn her queen b status, got good grades, did extra curriculars, put effort into her relationships, etc. if she wanted something she would make a plan and work for it. and when blair was a bitch she always got humiliated or had to pay for her actions in some way. but serena always got off scot free. she just shows up and is given the world. it got old pretty fast.

She is the worst, remember when she tried to make Lola her own "cousin" the new it girl, Lola didn't really want that, and Lola saw the opportunities were not that bad after all and then Serena got jealous she lied about Lola and she never apologized. She even got mad at Lola after she tried to expose her as GG even though Lola kept her secret. Everything Dan said about her was true, she literally tried to call the other guy just after reading what Dan said about her dying for men's attention. Every minutes she is with a new guy, I'm not slut shaming her because it wasn't like Chuck who was sleeping around, she fell in love way too easily. Her character was the worst, she ended the show how she started it and maybe even a little bit worse.

he was upper middle class. he's the son of a retired rock star. he lives in a brooklyn loft instead of a manhattan hotel penthouse. they don't really go out of their way to portray him as "poor" in terms of him not having any money. he's "poor" bc he doesn't have the capital means to lead the same opulent lifestyle as his school peers who are billionaires in comparison. rufus humphrey is probably a millionaire in the show. far more than what the average american has. a million dollars is not a lot of money when it gets down to living in nyc, sending your children to school for the rich elite, and be able to partially finance ivy league educations (there must've been a reason why yale refused to pay for dan's education). it's kinda like the whole great gastby old money v new money fiasco. gatsby, as rich as he was, didn't have enough capital to be "in" with the rest of the elite bc he wasn't the same money they were.

Yeah, this guy basically covered it. Since turning 23 and being well into my adulthood I realized how little I liked Serena. Sure she was sweet, but she irrationally played the victim despite ruining every stepping stone her mother set for her. She betrayed Blair twice. Homewrecked a marriage. Also "fell" in love with every single guy that waved hello to her. She's super easy and every thing I'm glad not to follow by. I also really didn't like Jenny either, she's pretty much a younger version of Serena only her actions and personality were more bold. I can't believe the writers didn't have Serena and Nathaniel get married, they're each other's mirror as they both sleep around.

To be fair, Dan isn't supposed to be real world poor. He's just poor compared to the other characters. I mean, at one point (in the books) Blair's mother buys each of her children their own island just because. That's the level of wealth we're talking about here.

At first, she had a younger brother, I think, then her mother got remarried and she got a new stepbrother, Aaron who was like a hippie and who she (or Serena, I can't remember) had a fling with. Her mother later had a baby with her stepfather which is when she bought the private islands.
Victoria Smith there are actually 12 books, plus a spin-off series called the It Girl which follows Jenny's misadventures at boarding school after she's publicly humiliated in NYC. Later there was a second spin-off series set in New York with new characters, the Carlyles after the original group of kids graduated college but that second spin-off was terrible because it was ghostwritten by a different person who felt the need to moralize the characters' actions and show that they were empty and shallow. Duh, I already know that - it doesn't mean I don't want to enjoy the insanity of their lifestyles. Gossip Girl is a fantasy and there's nothing wrong with the occasional brain candy.

Morality, upper east siders? I heavily disagree. They all lived for the drama in their lives, were treated and wanted to be treated like they were SUPERIOR to economically less privileged kids. They all did awful a lot of things, and got away with it, like sleeping with married people, sa’ing people with zero SERIOUS consequences like, really, a punch is not enough; bullying, sabotaging people’s future, marrying someone you don’t love and making them sacrifice and compromise a lot for themselves…list goes on. He, who was treated like a nobody, was at the end of the day, married to his crush, a powerful writer in the upper east side, preferably even more useful than her wife, and literally connected to powerful people. He was the actual holy GG and got away with it. The most impressive character in the show, admit it or not.

Darota was the most underrated character. I mean she was so funny and her comments when blair would want to her about an arguement she has had.
I watched the show at 15 and then recently again at 20, the way I see it now is so different. I used to look up to Blair and think she was amazing but really her character development was really slow and she ruined her life multiple times by scheming so much when she let it go. I used to hate Jenny towards the end but now I feel for her, I can see the things that sucked her in and the mistakes she made were real, that scene after she sleeps with chuck and she’s crying always really gets to me. Not a single character faced the repercussions of their mistakes like Jenny.
Blair didn’t even have character development she was still a bully when the show ended 🤣🤣

3 inconsistencies I'm now seeing in the pilot episode vs. the rest of the show:
1. Nate and Chuck taking the bus to school.
2. A different actress playing Blair's mother.
3. Jenny acting surprised that Dan even reads Gossip Girl, when the finale reveals that she knew that he himself was GG the whole time.

I still feel like Blair is the only character I love, even after rewatching for like the 20th time and I feel like most of that is due to Leighton's acting. Sure, she was super bitchy and mean, but most of that was due to how she was treated in comparison to Serena. Like, the perfect example to this is how Blair literally worked extremely hard academically, but still got waitlisted for Yale, while Serena just got a shoo-in for being her flighty, paparazzi friendly self. Blair was always seen as second best even if she worked extremely hard to get the Queen B position she has. In the books she was literally a caricature of the "perfect, UES Queen", and while the show still kept some of that aspect for her character, I guess they felt fleshing it out more for a television show would have been better (even though I think it's due to the time the show was made as well, like tv teen dramas didn't really have a lot of "umph" in them (lowkey some of them still don't), I feel like a literal satire, like the books intended, would be better achieved now)

She was really hardworking and very passionate about her professional life which was the main reason why I liked her. Whereas Serena was just a hot mess, she was all over the place, didn’t knew Shit but still somehow got into the best college, like what?😂 Moreover she was more shady than blair and backstabbing too.

Literally Blair is the only realistic and genuine character. She went through her dad leaving,her best friend cheating with her boyfriend, an eating disorder, constantly being second best, not getting into her dream college, her mum remarrying and loads of drama with chuck yet she still remained the same person

@isa: ´HAD’ a good heart. Honestly i have been rewatching the show and Serena is losing it really in the last seasons. All I could think of was 'Girl why are you lying to everyone, always hurting others, always thinking about yourself?' Also Serena had maybe this sad situation with her father, but that is nothing compared to what Blair endured. Blair had this constan t pressure of her mother's succesful career, her parents got divorced because her father was gay, and her father ends up with one of her mother's models? And he goes away to live in France? Serena never knew her father, so i can understand the daddy issues, but that is about all that i can understand from her behaviour. She does not have such a good heart in the end. At least not a better heart than Blair (who obviously also i a very childish bitch sometimes)

I think Gossip girl is one of the the best TV dramas ever. It's just really well written. Even though each character has a gimmick (Dan is the poor boy underdog, Blair is the bitchy fashionista, Jenny is the edgy outsider who really wants to be an insider, chuck is the player, Nate is the nice rich boy, and Serena is where all the secrets and or twists come from), their interactions and chemistry are all really well written and the whole show has this air of fantasy and "this could never be reality". The high schoolers sitting at a bar drinking martinis is what always did it in for me. It's so incredibly captivating and extra and over the top. God I miss this show, it's time to rewatch it
If this show was made today, Gossip Girl would be a serial killer. And everyone else would pretend to be her so they can kill people and blame Gossip Girl.. Also Serena Vanderwoodsen would have become a vampiress after her trip to Transelnetticut. Blair's a witch doctor obviously.

also every girl in the freaking school has like completely different uniform
in the books they said that the older girls use the same uniform for a long time so it got shorter when they aged, and the school changed the uniform a little later or something like that (years since I read it)
I think it’s interesting how Gossip Girl introduces Dan to her readers the same way the writers/camera introduces him to the viewing audience. The audience is also a reader of gossip girl!

I was interested in hearing a guys perspective on this because I’ve always thought the same thing! My boyfriend said Blair has a prettier face but is too upitty and prissy and that’s a turn off, while Serena has that down to earth cool girl vibe and overall looks sexy. Like she has the whole package. Even if her face isn’t technically as pretty. At the end of the day she’s still a tanned, tall, blonde, thin hot girl and lower maintenance than Blair. So overall more attractive to guys.
But I agree. I always thought Blair was the better looking one (I think most girls agree), and despite being scheming and insecure was always a loyal friend to Serena while Serena would just desert her and galavant off with some new guy in a second if she got the chance. Plus Blair worked harder for things while Serena got handouts essentially.
There was a lot about Serena’s personality in the later seasons I didn’t like either. She went from being a humble soul who just wanted to live a normal life to a girl who knew exactly where her high profile name and good looks could get her and made no effort to retain any humility. In a way New York made her toxic, as it did to most people in the series.
I think the entire show highlighted how much of a dog fight that high society elitist world can be and how it can corrupt the wholesomeness in you.

1) Humphrey’s aren’t poor, they owned a fricking art gallery. They are just not as rich as the rest of the characters.
2) Nate and Chuck probably wrote a bus so that they wouldn’t get caught after parting (though I have no idea why they never do that again)
3) to everyone who’s concerned about em parting since the early teenage: we have like a bunch of family friends (as in families being friends with families) who are wealthy like our family (which is really not THAT wealthy, just a little more than the statistic middle) and for us drinking from the age of 13-14 is totally fine, as long as we are not totally wasted and not doing it on the side, just while being with that circle of people
4) all of this guys probably have fake ID’s, in the SAT’s episode Chuck got those for himself and Serena faster than you can say “gossip girl”
5) they party cause that’s their idea of fun, they grew up on their parents always inviting someone to dinners and all the fancy stuff

It would've been better if the show looked a bit more like the wolf among us/fables, if they really showed how going from a fairy tale wolrd to our world destroyed some of those characters life.
Because for the most part it just look inconvenient. Not really the kind of thing a curse/revenge plot is supposed to be. And Regina is like rather nice with the people she cursed. I'd expect her to be a lot meaner than what she is in the show.

You can't go that far for a result that weak. i dont know why people hated jenny as the seasons went on. i hated her at first because she as such a suck up to Blair and would hide her own individuality so she could be like them but as they went on she became her own person and my favorite character she just decided to fuck everyone elses opinion and become herself thats more than what everyone else did. She was the only one in the entire show to just be herslef and follow her dreams and personly i feel like Blair also made her into a bad person because Blair has always been afraid and jealous of jenny.

also blairs voice changed so much from season 1 to 6! like in the final seasons its so nasally and girly and almost baby, and in the first season its low and sexy and almost... normal... so weird to see blair grow into her character .. Serena stayed constant throughout the whole thing...

Serena didn’t change at all! She stayed the same. Bounced from relationship to relationship and still ended up with Dan at the end though he wrote all those terrible things about her (which were true) and was GG. So unrealistic. She should of ended up with Nate in the end and Dan with Vanessa.

Hannah Beynon I honestly think Supernatural was a lot better during it's earlier seasons. The show got weird after season 4 because this was around the time the original writer died. the show could have easily ended if you shave off the last few seconds of the season 5 finale because that's where the original writer wanted the show to end (it was supposed to be a 5 season show and it really shows). but that's just my opinion. I'm not saying you should stop liking it. if you like it then continue to love it :)

A few things about gossip girl
1. The show tries to frame Rufus as the perfect father but time and time again he proves himself to be full of double standards, especially when it comes to the virginity issue w Dan vs Jenny.
2. Why are these people ALWAYS going through each other’s crap? It’s like “oh, here’s a sealed letter in my beloved partner’s bag, lemme just take that and read it unbeknownst to them because I want a reason to be mad”.
3. Nobody ever questions these huge groups of minors drinking in public bars and hotels... I get that they’re rich and can get away with drinking, but if a bartender gets caught serving alcohol to minors they’re screwed, so the only drinking these kids would reasonably be doing is from their parents’ stashes.
4. Wow the first season hair was truly awful
5. I understand that buying your way into an Ivy League isn’t unheard of, but there’s no way with the dialogues that the writers wrote for these characters that any of them would even have a chance at an ivy on their own merits. They’re just not super intelligent people. Even their SAT scores were only like 90th percentile. Sorry, but there’s just no way, even money can’t get you that far.
