I’m way older than you folks, but I still remember and (cringe) kind of like this look from the “oughts.” It. . . works for me. It’s accessible. It can flatter many body types. Basic? Yup. I can live with that. ETA: And I think the gender-adaptability of the look is also a plus. You can feminize (peasant blouse, cami) or masculinize (henley, flannel) as you wish. That’s got to be a plus as society increasingly recognizes that gender identity is a continuum. ETA AGAIN: Yes, the style is largely showcased on skinny white women. This is hardly unusual, but definitely problematic.

I think it has a lot to do with seasons as well. It's difficult to think of Paris Hilton 2000s-esque style ideas in the dead of Autumn. I think when next summer comes we'll see style go back in reverse

I agree. There's nothing wrong with being simple and down to earth. I feel that this will help other girls who can't afford name brand clothes all the time. These outfits are perfect to wear to school and normal everyday outings.
Most of my wardrobe is like that too, I will rock my skater skirts, I actually have an Elena outfit everytime I wear it, with my figure heads are rolling.
I agree with this trend being actually "thinness" being trendy rather than actual clothoes. Having lived through it, I remember that the "allure" of these outfits was mostly the fact that the girl was so attractive, her body actually MADE these borigng, bland outfits look cool and attractive. I reacall it as a kind of "she's attractive but doesn't know/doesn't care" trope.
Yea, I think it’s called “hanger appeal”-how a piece of clothing look on the hanger vs on the body. For example, a bikini looks bad on a hanger but looks good on the “right” body
This trend is so weird to me... this is the first trend that I’ve actually participated in in its original form. I’m used to nostalgia being out of my range but now it’s in my lifetime
The upside to fashion like this, is that it’s super easy to thrift. It’s cheap and good for the environment so I really can’t be mad about teens wearing the clothes that I wore as a teen.
@Moon B I mean, you can just spend your money on clothes you want and not care if they go out of trend in a month. If the neon skirts make you happy then get them and keep wearing them even after they’re out of fashion, if you don’t like them then save your money for clothing you do like. And if the clothing you like is more simple and basic then go with that
i agree, most of these items i had kept since I was in elementary when it was too big for me and now im in college wearing them so its kinda nice to see the style. it is both underrated and overrated at the same time but it helps the environment since its stuff you can find at a thrift better.

I’m actually a bit younger (19), but it is weird to me too because while I didn’t really wear these clothes cause I was too young; every older girl I looked up to did so I have lots of nostalgia for them too.
Basically "Main Girl Character" has become a fashion style, which makes sense with more people, as far as the internet, talking about media archetypes in the real. Like "dress like the main character" or "I feel like the funny side character that's secretly hurting" or "this season of [whatever] has so many plot twists"

As a person who lived thru this era I like seeing this trend. I’m also a woc and have never been thin and I wore the camisoles, the layering, the chucks, the kohl’s hoodies, all of it. I would definitely agree that the silhouette definitely caters to thinner bodies but it’s not unflattering to curvier ones either. The style is basic and easily accessible. And lots of the tops actually help to create a “flattering” shape to what most would consider to be problem areas depending on how you decide to style it. I know this won’t last but the trend kind of reminded me just how much I love moody autumnal styles. But I’m not a teenager anymore so I take from the trend what I actually like and incorporate it into my wardrobe and I’ll keep it moving until I tire of it. I just wish these teens were given the tools to feel confident in that so they can build their style on a more solid foundation. I would probably cry every month because the trends move so fast now I can’t keep up 🥲
I agree with everything that you said! I'm on the curvier side too and I feel like this can definitely look good on me or on other curvy women. Idk why people say it wouldn't look good on us. Imo, the current trends (oversized everything, baggy jeans etc.) look WAY WORSE on curvy people, especially on us short and curvy folks.
Right? I wore this style as a very thin gal as a teen except having a butt and I wear a lot of these elements now as a mom with an extra 20lbs on me. The only thing I cannot rock anymore is low rise jeans. 😂

I may not have inherited the beautiful olive skin or gorgeous thick hair that my mother and sister both got from the Sicilian side of our family; but, I did get the thick, wide hips/thighs and big butt. I've noticed this fashion wasn't just present in teen media. lately I've been rewatching the earlier seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and when the women aren't in scrubs, they're wearing bootcut jeans and Henley tops. They often layer those tops under their scrubs with the buttons peaking out over the neckline. I think it's interesting that the style was also present in shows with a mainly adult audience.
I hate how these micro trends make me rethink the items I thought I hated and never wanted to see again. A few months ago when I would see old pictures of fashion from 2008 I would say “ew why did we ever like that,” but seeing people on tiktok wearing it again makes me kind of nostalgic and more open to it. I must be super impressionable.
We were always this impressionable I thought eww flare pants till lately when i saw it in a shop. Trends are weird. Find your own timeless style and think before you buy is all we can do. We as humans always will try and fit in with the rest so if the rest likes something you will too in time

As someone who watched and was obsessed with Twilight when I was a teenager, it's actually hilarious to see it become a thing again already. Especially in regard to the fashion, I used to try to look like Bella and Elena, because I felt like it was cute without trying too hard. But seeing this style now, it's actually really basic and boring lol, but I can understand why teenagers would gravitate towards it now since it's really accessible and easy to dress like them
Yeah, I could see the appeal for (thin, white) teens. It's an easy style to pull off. Like it would be hard to get this look wrong. And that kinda matters when you're young, not going too far, not looking like you're trying too hard.
It may be ‘basic’ for you, but for some teens it’s not : You can see a lot of y2k style, boys and girls wearing baggy jeans and Jordan’s, oversize jackets and shirts… everywhere On the opposite of the spectrum, you can see old money and classic style which sometimes tends to be very strict Wearing tight clothes (but not crop tops) and even feminine clothes aren’t that fashionable anymore But elena Gilbert and Bella Swan’s fashion styles is affordable yet comfy and it makes your body looking amazing without being too revealing At least, that’s the appeal for me and my opinion At the same time, you can add some ‘romantic’ or ‘academic’ style and accessories with it

As someone who's in high school and wished they were born in the early 2000s i am so ready for this, and it's ok if you found it cringey back them lmao your more grown up and there r so man fashion sources nowdays which you can use to help w styling this in a more chic and edgy way.
I think this trend will be big for some teens and potentially college age people but, I don't see it permeating past that demographic into the mainstream fashion circuit. That being said I saw this trend alot about 2 weeks ago and its sadly already being slowly fazed out in my feed into more "old money", "subversive styles", and "archive fashion". Tiktok has become an echo chamber of micro trends and over consumption. Every month or two a trend is all over my fyp and just as quickly it gets critiqued and then it's on to the next. I think at this rate one could make a heafty timeline of every micro trend this year and how each one plays onto the next and what it says about youth culture of today.
I love this channel but I really hope these deep dives into obscure aesthetics on tiktok isnt treated as if every fad that springs up in that app is a universal TREND. Because its not. Tiktok only shows a miniscule sample size of what its algorithm wants to show you and sometimes it acts as an echo chamber making you think that a certain thing is prevailent if you see it so often enough. And I wish that in future videos you would also discuss a "trend" or fad's impact OUTSIDE of tiktok in the larger ecosystem of the internet and media to see if a certain aesthetic really has made a "comeback".

Although i enjoy these types of videos bc of the internet analysis aspect about them, the word trend is perhaps indeed not applicable but could influence our perception to make things seem (a lot) bigger than they are! I also think discussion of impact outside of tiktok/internet is a great tip! In general with like commentary channels and internet analysis types of videos also outside of this channel, although no one is obviously obligated to include that angle, i think it would add a lot of value to everyones experience on the internet to also be aware of the bigger picture like that. On basically all niche corners on the internet you can really lose yourself in how important all of the issues there seem, when mostly, they really arent.
Totally agree. I definitely like these videos too, but it seems like fashion commentators nowadays are overly concerned with what’s going on on tiktok. Just like tumblr wasn’t the entire fashion world back in the day, tiktok is only a small part. Plus, trends on tiktok are essentially just cosplay anyway and not how the people necessarily dress in everyday life when they go out. For more accurate fashion takes we should see what people are wearing in trendy neighborhoods in big cities like NYC and LA for example

Having lived through this era myself (I was a hardcore twihard and a vampire diaries fan) I actually find this quite endearing. It 's like your little sister watching your old favorite movies and going through your old clothes it's sweet.
I have to admit this one's a bit of a struggle for me... I found this "style" excessively boring even back when it was happening originally so there being nostalgia for it is hard for me to comprehend... jeans and a t-shirt is always kind of a staple look and I get the silhouettes returning to the early-ish 2000s, but it's kind of baffling to me to call it a "-core" or to have people putting on a long sleeve Henley and bootcut jeans and putting it on TikTok as a fashion moment. Obviously it's just never been my taste and that's subjective so it's great that people are having fun with it, it's just the first returning trend that I haven't really been able to get the appeal of.
Me too. I love Nina Dobrev in Vampire Diaries but always thought her clothes are so so boring. Nothing inspiring in this style for me. I wouldn't even call it a style. Jeans and a henley, I wore this once when I thought I have to fit in... I felt invisible and sluggish. And often I'm very basic myself, but more elegant basic not this lame blue jeans stuff every person in the countryside wears. Your mom wears it, your teacher, even the friggin cashier lol
If you see what passes as "Basic" on the Forever 21 site these days, you can better understand where these kids are coming from. EVERYTHING is a crop top now. It's very hard to find a normal everyday blouse with no graphics on it. So "2000s Basic attire" is vintage to them.
This is literally the aesthetic of caracteres that have low self steam, no confidence and most of the times the clothes were used to point their lack of fashion sense. It’s so weird to see the comeback

as someone who lived through this era of fashion, this revival is reminding me of the aspects i liked about it. like henley shirts and layering short sleeves over long. i won’t hop on this twilightcore trend completely and buy a whole new wardrobe, but i might look out for some of these pieces i forgot i liked at thrift in the future!

As someone who grew up in middle/HS during the OG era, having any sort of curves or boobs was horrific when paired with this style. Like, the color palette can stay, but the cuts, shapes of it all are deeply embedded in my soul. Nothing was "flattering" and thinness was the required accessory to make this look conventionally fashionable.
wdym boot cut are super flattering for bigger tights! It balance it out without hiding them. Also can we stop demonizing thin girls for liking clothes that flatter their body shape (ex form fitting tops). Thinness is not an accessory, it's just a body type people can have ✌️

Many of us from the 2000s have escaped it with body issues, body dysmorphia oder ED. There was no acceptance of diverse bodies. That is the critique not that thin women exist. It is about how they were celebrated simply for existing in their bodies while anyone slightly heavier than Misha Barton was demonized

It's very exclusionary and it's questionable as to if we are celebrating the fashion/style or the body itself. If a thin woman and a plus-size woman were to where the exact same twilight-core outfit would both of them be considered fashionable by society's standards?
Find what you like that you feel good in and wear it, adding things from trends if you genuinely like the thing/if it fits your vibe if you have a set one, rather than aspiring for your whole look to always be current. It’s advice I was given that always seems pretty solid.

I wouldn't call thees aesthetics per say, more like fashion challenges. And movie/series closes inspired looks aren't a new thing, I think Chriselle Lim had a Harry Potter inspo video almost 10 y/a. And just like the coconut girl aesthetic that was going on, it's a direct result of 00s nostalgia, a time of blissful ignorance that genZ want to live and genY want to re-live. I think (at least so far) the 2020s fashion will be marked by 00s dream nostalgia with a hint of 70s flare and 60s fun.

Yess cus this are like the most basic outfits, almost everyone has some of these clothes in their closet, is kinda impossible not to tbh. I think these tiktokers forget that a lot of ppl dont try to dress up in certain styles in their daily life or dont care/have the privilege to care about their outfits everyday so these clothes for the most part have NEVER gone away, cus they are basic, comfortable and accesible. I am from a small town in Germany, and most people are not fashionable. thats why, when you go grocery shopping, many times people are dressed like this. Not because of the tiktok trend. Just because they bought their clothes a couple of years ago and still wear them.
When I was in high school I was so into this look and tried to emulate it. However, in high school I was overweight and always hated the way it looked on me. I never understood why I didn’t look like Bella Swan when I wanted to so badly. Then I realized that I didn’t love the clothes, I loved how Kristen Stewart looked (thin, thick pretty hair). I agree with you on how this look caters towards thin women. I just wish i had realized this back when I was younger!

It's honestly (IMO!) not fashionable, not fun, and not even that "unusual". It's whatever you had in your closet. The individual pieces (again, IMO!) range from meh to tacky, and the only way that it looked "cool" was if you were already conventionally attractive. It's kinda funny seeing this as a trend, because this isn't a subculture, or even that representative of the coolest fashion at the time. It's JC Penny's back-to-school selection.

I'm not opposed to this. This "style" definitely looks super comfortable and easy to put together. I do think that young people nowadays look insanely uncomfortable on first glance, so good for them. They'll wear it better than we did back in the day for sure

The thing that strikes me most about this 'aesthetic' is that it epitomises the phrase "is it fashionable, or are they just thin/white?". On a non-white, non-thin body, these clothes would be considered out of date and unfashionable.
Honestly, it looks out of date and unfashionable even on most white skinny bodies. It's just a very difficult style to pull of and it's not really worth it with how basic and boring it looks!
Yes, these are the type of clothes you see on people who care 0 % about fashion. But when skinny young girls wear it it's fashion. It's the same with a trend i say maybe two years ago with thick bulky fleece/outdoorsy sweaters a dad would wear. Young skinny white girls chop off the waist so you can see their skinny body and now it's fashion
yess! i thought it was fairy grunge because they seemed so similar, it’s like they change to alter the seasons. in summer it was the coconut girl / fairy grunge. in spring it was cottagecore, etc.
This is incredibly interesting. For people my age (early 20s), I think a big part of our attachment to these trends is because we remember being preteens and thinking "that's how I'm going to dress when I'm older!" Since the fashion landscape changed when we were finally teenagers, seeing it come back is like a second chance at making our (now nostalgic) dreams come true. I truly don't think enough time has passed to reinvent these looks or make them interesting. It just looks a bit dated still. On the other hand, I can see how this kind of no-frills look could be refreshing to some people too. It's an ultra casual look that isn't influenced by streetwear/athleisure like more recent casual fashion trends.
when twilight came out you were probably 7/8...which was the age of the majority of those who are participating in the trend rn (they were around 4-8 when it came out). An old person would constitute as someone who was a teen when it came out 😂
I really like this aesthetic actually. it’s better for the planet in our world of fast fashion bc of how many of the pieces can just be thrifted. I also like how cozy and non revealing it is. it may seem plain and boring to people who have already went through the twilight era in its prime, but to us who are now just experiencing this… the clothing sorta has a charm to it

Maybe late gen z wouldn't remember Twilight, but the majority of us are old enough to remember the Twilight craze. I was in 4th grade when I watched the first Twilight movie, when my mom rented the DVD from Redbox. I think this is more about us feeling nostalgic for that time.

i feel like the broader trend is honestly just a bunch of young teens wearing anything inspired by media from 2000-2015. like two years ago it was e-girl, last year it was cottagecore, this is just the next trend in the cycle. maybe it's got something to do with increased media consumption during the pandemic or something? in any case i hope it's over by next year so that we can see a bit more creativity and not just recreation. (not saying the clothes aren't cute, i pretty much like all of it, but it's extremely unfocused and consumeristic and just like a teenager trying to figure themselves out)

This definitely has something to do with media consumption during the pandemic. It makes sense that a lot of people have been re-watching movies/tv-shows & intentionally or unintentionally emulating the styles from said movies/tv-shows as a form of escapism the almost 2 years since the world caught on fire.
also re: your vid on shoe trends reflecting the financial state at the time, i’ve noticed that women’s fashion in times of economic booms is more hyper feminine, while it’s more stereotypically masculine in harder times. maybe it’s bc masculine clothing is usually simpler/understated when compared to feminine styles?
This is so true in a lot of cases. Just compare 1950s/early 1960s women's fashion to late 1960 and 1970s fashion. Or mid 2000s McBling fashion versus late 2000s/early 2010s fashion. That rule seemed to change for the 2020s fashion though. 2020 and 2021 have obviously been hard times for many of us, yet I think fashion has become more feminine since 2020, but I think that's due to escapism and also our desire to dress up more any time we go out, since going outside is more rare now (for some of us anyway). Edit: I don't know if this counts, but your rule also applies for the grunge age of the early 90s, since the recession of the late 80s wasn't that long before grunge became trendy, though I think that recession wasn't as impactful as others.

Personally, I feel like the style looks better on girls with a very specific body type? Like skinny arms and a non-flat chest? These would look awful on me and I actually think I'm on the thinner side, but I don't have that body type.
Same, the tiktoks in the video make it quite clear that skinny arms, thigh gaps and small busts are a requirement of participation. I think it's also taken for granted that tall/-er people usually also fit that type of clothing better with their long legs and torsos. Short people just look stumpy and awkward in the henleys and camisoles (speaking from experience). Not to even mention the horror of searching for any kind of pants that actually fit your body.
I believe that everything could look good on everyone with the right shapes and fabrics but in this case the shape is awkward and the fabrics are cheap , so I completely agree . I am mid sized and you won't find me near this clothes

As a POC I have a very different take. Most black girls didn’t dress like that because we didn’t WANT TO. We had very different styles and media influences. Honestly if you were black and dressed that way you’d likely get made fun of and called unfashionable by other black people lol

personally, i find this fashion trend is comfortable, cheap and accessible for me. plus, i'm someone who loves to wear dark, natural color palette. some of the pieces like bootcut jeans, leather jacket, boots, converse, and v-necks are quite basic clothing pieces that can be worn anytime.
So as a POC millennial, I have worn all of these in college and I do agree with you, most of the clothes mentioned were designed with a thinner body in mind. Henleys and button downs would not work with me without a cami underneath. Forget low rise jeans. Honestly, it’s the most basic “aesthetic” I’ve seen lately.
I know I graduated high school over ten years ago but it still makes me feel really wigged out to see fashion trends from when I was in high school coming back like this.
I HATED being a pre/teen in this era fashionwise! As a plus sized kid it was torture not being comfortable or looking good in any of the clothing that was sold for youths.
I think that it was pure uncomfortable for literaly everybody. I was a skinny teenager around this area - a little bit younger, more pure 2010s - and clothes were really unconfortable. The materials were weird - god, those jeans were impossible - and clothes were poorly made, even worse than now.
I had my puberty during this era and skinny low waist jeans were in and I couldn't wear it due to me not being skinny at all. But I own some of them coz you had to buy them at some point by the time you get to high school and college. And college is where high waist came back for me but expensive at the time until I got one as a gift from my brother (I chose it online actually lol)
henley shirts, jeans and sneakers are always an aesthetic... never got rid of them ;) i love this trend because i literally couldn't imagine a better style when i was a teenager lol
As someone who was in high school when this trend was at its peak: this really only felt wearable if you were small. I’m midsize, I always have been and i feel like not seeing how midsize/curvy people would style these looks made it hard to be comfortable with how the pieces looked on my body type. I saw this trend damage mine and many of my peers’ self esteem to extremely unhealthy extents. This was also around the time Tumblr had large pro-ED communities, I think the trend definitely contributed to pushing young people to those dark corners of the online “beauty community” (not throwing shade, but that’s how people including myself at the time saw it as because that was the beauty standard - the volume of blogs/users/people was so large it was kind of recognised as a community. In hindsight, cult would be a more accurate noun.)
I was about to comment it! Seeing how tiktok is more fashion inclusive towards people with larger sizes I'm betting on a new aesthetic, more feminine and early 2000 or 2010, as contercouture. Probably emphasizing curves.
I was also just thinking about this, because Twillight and TVD were my favourite thungs back when I was a tween and I felt extremely fat when wanting to wear the fashion of the time, because I have never really been really skinny, rather normal or normal skinny (idk if that’s a thing) and I also have a pretty wide rib cage and hips which is not very easy to style when it comes to retail clothing (retail clothing is really more suuted to body types like Nina Dobrev’s with her small ribcage and very thin disposition).

The style is very literally straight and flat, if your tummy hangs over mid-rise jeans (which of course it would, especially with the tight skinny jeans that were also a massive trend during this time!) these shirts always defined it. Like, I’m not gonna be salty at gals who look amazing in this style but I know it only looks good because it was literally tailored to fit narrow frames with flat stomachs. Ngl, I used to absolutely hate women who looked like this but now I know it’s not the women I hated, it’s the standards and at the time my body that I hated. Glad I’m in a place now where I can fully appreciate other women’s appearances without feeling like what they have is what I lack! On that note: my body is gorgeous, I will literally say that out loud every damn day to make up for the amount of bullying and shaming I mentally put myself through in my teen years! 💖 Side note: I know I’m using heavily gendered language but it also applies to other genders 🥰
I'm 24 and lived through my Twilight phase and the 2010's. I was always curvy and I can say with confidence this those clothes of that time were centered for skinny or thin people. The Body Positivity Movement didn't gain traction until late 2015/Early 2016 (my freshman year of college). Before then, I didn't see women my body type in media. And when we were, we were the brunt of a joke, heavily criticized, or on weight-loss ads. The movement gained traction due to social media and attempts to destigmatize mental health because ED's and self-harm were one of the highest percentages of teen mental health crises at that time. I remember how it affected me and girls who were plus-size and curvy. We always felt out of the loop not being able to participate in fashion trends at the time and being bullied and harassed because of our weight. As a result, our only options of clothing were the "old lady section" of department stores leaving us feeling frumpy, boring, and defeated. So yes, I agree with you when you said "was it really fashionable, or was it just the skinny people wearing it". Because the 2000's and 2010's as a whole was not meant to include diversity in sizes, genders, or race. But with the changes in social media and the body positivity movement, we can see diversity being included (and even setting) fashion trends. And the fact we are able to call out brands, designers, makeup companies (etc) for their lack of diversity for sizes and colors is a huge step in the right direction.
Thinking back to the early 2000s when we had a recession, it's interesting to see this style pop up again. When I wore it, it wasn't really considered cool but I think it should be appreciated.
This exact aesthetic includes almost exclusiveluy: a white tank top under a v neck short sleeve or long sleeve shirt, light/medium wash blue jeans and M A Y B E a flannel.
I don't know why "looking cheap" or "simple" style needs to be a bad thing? Also it is really modest which we don't usually see in a fashion trend. I agree with the skinny fashion part tho. I am a big boobs girl so having strapless clothes or backless shirts even crop tops are nearly impossible for me. When I wear something baggy I look triple my size. I never could've followed a fashion style because of this and my financial status, also where I live is modest. This trend fits my problems so well that I am happy this aesthetic not looked bad. I don't care if it is a trend or not, it just being and accepted aesthetic makes me happy and comfy.
Agreed, i think people should dress for what looks good on their body regardless of what's "in". I too like being modest, but i actually grew up in the PNW and am used to needing layers, boots, and jackets so thats what feels best for me 🤷♀️
Yeah I agree, I think for sure these costumes became trends because pretty girls on TV were wearing them, BUT I really appreciate the simplicity and normal-ness of it! People are 100% entitled to dress however they want, but the fashion trends of today are really inaccessible for people who might not want to show so much skin. Again, NO JUDGEMENT, do your thing, but just personally it's nice to see "boring" clothes being popular. Especially on TV, I feel like it ads to the story a lot, it adds to the vibe of a dark cozy town.
I don't have big tatas, but my hips are pretty big compared to my waist and I'm generally speaking very curvacious/round and I look triple my size too, when I wear baggy clothes (and I am at a healthy BMI). On top of that, I'm also short lol. So I can't wear super baggy jeans or anything super oversized and it's honestly frustrating to see people making fun of skinny jeans etc., when these are the jeans that flatter me the most. It's like people who aren't tall and slim/narrow are being made fun of no matter what aesthetic. I want justice for short and curvy women lmao

The movies/shows both came out while I was in 8th and 9th grade, 2008 and 2009. I was reading both series at that point. There were already platforms where people would put together mood boards of the fashion and then when the twilight movie came out there was a lot of clothes and merchandise associated with it. Also, literally one of the first lines in the voice over is the commentator saying, “In today’s episode we’ll be studying the FAIRLY NEW AESTHETIC…” Jesus Christ, y’all just want to argue for no reason as if I personally came for you and your mother. I actually like this “trend”, it’s purchasing simple tops that are one color. people will always wear simple color clothes on many occasions then compared to the house of sunny dress where it’s bold and bright. Also these pieces are simple and I can make a look from this straight from my clothes or purchasing a $2 shirt at the thrift store. And of course many teens now, I included, are being obsessed abt twilight because we’re old enough to be in her shoes and understand and make it relatable. I think you should dress however you want😊

I’m way older than you folks, but I still remember and (cringe) kind of like this look from the “oughts.” It. . . works for me. It’s accessible. It can flatter many body types. Basic? Yup. I can live with that. ETA: And I think the gender-adaptability of the look is also a plus. You can feminize (peasant blouse, cami) or masculinize (henley, flannel) as you wish. That’s got to be a plus as society increasingly recognizes that gender identity is a continuum. ETA AGAIN: Yes, the style is largely showcased on skinny white women. This is hardly unusual, but definitely problematic.

I agree with this trend being actually "thinness" being trendy rather than actual clothoes. Having lived through it, I remember that the "allure" of these outfits was mostly the fact that the girl was so attractive, her body actually MADE these borigng, bland outfits look cool and attractive. I reacall it as a kind of "she's attractive but doesn't know/doesn't care" trope.
Yea, I think it’s called “hanger appeal”-how a piece of clothing look on the hanger vs on the body. For example, a bikini looks bad on a hanger but looks good on the “right” body

The upside to fashion like this, is that it’s super easy to thrift. It’s cheap and good for the environment so I really can’t be mad about teens wearing the clothes that I wore as a teen.

If the neon skirts make you happy then get them and keep wearing them even after they’re out of fashion, if you don’t like them then save your money for clothing you do like. i agree, most of these items i had kept since I was in elementary when it was too big for me and now im in college wearing them so its kinda nice to see the style. it is both underrated and overrated at the same time but it helps the environment since its stuff you can find at a thrift better.

As a person who lived thru this era I like seeing this trend. I’m also a woc and have never been thin and I wore the camisoles, the layering, the chucks, the kohl’s hoodies, all of it. I would definitely agree that the silhouette definitely caters to thinner bodies but it’s not unflattering to curvier ones either. The style is basic and easily accessible. And lots of the tops actually help to create a “flattering” shape to what most would consider to be problem areas depending on how you decide to style it. I know this won’t last but the trend kind of reminded me just how much I love moody autumnal styles. But I’m not a teenager anymore so I take from the trend what I actually like and incorporate it into my wardrobe and I’ll keep it moving until I tire of it. I just wish these teens were given the tools to feel confident in that so they can build their style on a more solid foundation. I would probably cry every month because the trends move so fast now I can’t keep up 🥲

I've noticed this fashion wasn't just present in teen media. lately I've been rewatching the earlier seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and when the women aren't in scrubs, they're wearing bootcut jeans and Henley tops. They often layer those tops under their scrubs with the buttons peaking out over the neckline. I think it's interesting that the style was also present in shows with a mainly adult audience.
I noticed that about Desperate Housewives too! especially Susan Mayer, I feel like the bootcut/Henley/cami combo is her uniform.

I think this trend will be big for some teens and potentially college age people but, I don't see it permeating past that demographic into the mainstream fashion circuit. That being said I saw this trend alot about 2 weeks ago and its sadly already being slowly fazed out in my feed into more "old money", "subversive styles", and "archive fashion". Tiktok has become an echo chamber of micro trends and over consumption. Every month or two a trend is all over my fyp and just as quickly it gets critiqued and then it's on to the next. I think at this rate one could make a heafty timeline of every micro trend this year and how each one plays onto the next and what it says about youth culture of today.

I love this channel but I really hope these deep dives into obscure aesthetics on tiktok isnt treated as if every fad that springs up in that app is a universal TREND. Because its not. Tiktok only shows a miniscule sample size of what its algorithm wants to show you and sometimes it acts as an echo chamber making you think that a certain thing is prevailent if you see it so often enough.
And I wish that in future videos you would also discuss a "trend" or fad's impact OUTSIDE of tiktok in the larger ecosystem of the internet and media to see if a certain aesthetic really has made a "comeback".

In general with like commentary channels and internet analysis types of videos also outside of this channel, although no one is obviously obligated to include that angle, i think it would add a lot of value to everyones experience on the internet to also be aware of the bigger picture like that. On basically all niche corners on the internet you can really lose yourself in how important all of the issues there seem, when mostly, they really arent.

Totally agree. I definitely like these videos too, but it seems like fashion commentators nowadays are overly concerned with what’s going on on tiktok. Just like tumblr wasn’t the entire fashion world back in the day, tiktok is only a small part. Plus, trends on tiktok are essentially just cosplay anyway and not how the people necessarily dress in everyday life when they go out. For more accurate fashion takes we should see what people are wearing in trendy neighborhoods in big cities like NYC and LA for example

Having lived through this era myself (I was a hardcore twihard and a vampire diaries fan) I actually find this quite endearing. It 's like your little sister watching your old favorite movies and going through your old clothes it's sweet.
I have to admit this one's a bit of a struggle for me... I found this "style" excessively boring even back when it was happening originally so there being nostalgia for it is hard for me to comprehend... jeans and a t-shirt is always kind of a staple look and I get the silhouettes returning to the early-ish 2000s, but it's kind of baffling to me to call it a "-core" or to have people putting on a long sleeve Henley and bootcut jeans and putting it on TikTok as a fashion moment. Obviously it's just never been my taste and that's subjective so it's great that people are having fun with it, it's just the first returning trend that I haven't really been able to get the appeal of.

Me too. I love Nina Dobrev in Vampire Diaries but always thought her clothes are so so boring. Nothing inspiring in this style for me. I wouldn't even call it a style. Jeans and a henley, I wore this once when I thought I have to fit in... I felt invisible and sluggish. And often I'm very basic myself, but more elegant basic not this lame blue jeans stuff every person in the countryside wears. Your mom wears it, your teacher, even the friggin cashier lol

If you see what passes as "Basic" on the Forever 21 site these days, you can better understand where these kids are coming from. EVERYTHING is a crop top now. It's very hard to find a normal everyday blouse with no graphics on it. So "2000s Basic attire" is vintage to them.

As someone who grew up in middle/HS during the OG era, having any sort of curves or boobs was horrific when paired with this style. Like, the color palette can stay, but the cuts, shapes of it all are deeply embedded in my soul. Nothing was "flattering" and thinness was the required accessory to make this look conventionally

I wouldn't call thees aesthetics per say, more like fashion challenges. And movie/series closes inspired looks aren't a new thing, I think Chriselle Lim had a Harry Potter inspo video almost 10 y/a. And just like the coconut girl aesthetic that was going on, it's a direct result of 00s nostalgia, a time of blissful ignorance that genZ want to live and genY want to re-live. Yess cus this are like the most basic outfits, almost everyone has some of these clothes in their closet, is kinda impossible not to tbh. I think these tiktokers forget that a lot of ppl dont try to dress up in certain styles in their daily life or dont care/have the privilege to care about their outfits everyday so these clothes for the most part have NEVER gone away, cus they are basic, comfortable and accesible. Ppl on that app just live in their own gen Z bubble thinking everyone is following the new aesthetics so they think "bringing back" these clothes is unique or smth.
I am from a small town in Germany, and most people are not fashionable. thats why, when you go grocery shopping, many times people are dressed like this. Not because of the tiktok trend. Just because they bought their clothes a couple of years ago and still wear them.
When I was in high school I was so into this look and tried to emulate it. However, in high school I was overweight and always hated the way it looked on me. I never understood why I didn’t look like Bella Swan when I wanted to so badly. Then I realized that I didn’t love the clothes, I loved how Kristen Stewart looked (thin, thick pretty hair). "Is it fashionable, or is it just thinness being exalted?" As someone who grew up when this was popular and wore it to school while being plus-size, I can speak to the truth of it. It's honestly (IMO!) not fashionable, not fun, and not even that "unusual". It's whatever you had in your closet. The individual pieces (again, IMO!) range from meh to tacky, and the only way that it looked "cool" was if you were already conventionally attractive. It's kinda funny seeing this as a trend, because this isn't a subculture, or even that representative of the coolest fashion at the time. It's JC Penny's back-to-school selection.

The thing that strikes me most about this 'aesthetic' is that it epitomises the phrase "is it fashionable, or are they just thin/white?". On a non-white, non-thin body, these clothes would be considered out of date and unfashionable.

Yes, these are the type of clothes you see on people who care 0 % about fashion. But when skinny young girls wear it it's fashion. This is incredibly interesting. For people my age (early 20s), I think a big part of our attachment to these trends is because we remember being preteens and thinking "that's how I'm going to dress when I'm older!" Since the fashion landscape changed when we were finally teenagers, seeing it come back is like a second chance at making our (now nostalgic) dreams come true. I truly don't think enough time has passed to reinvent these looks or make them interesting. It just looks a bit dated still. On the other hand, I can see how this kind of no-frills look could be refreshing to some people too. It's an ultra casual look that isn't influenced by streetwear/athleisure like more recent casual fashion trends.

I really like this aesthetic actually. it’s better for the planet in our world of fast fashion bc of how many of the pieces can just be thrifted. I also like how cozy and non revealing it is. it may seem plain and boring to people who have already went through the twilight era in its prime, but to us who are now just experiencing this… the clothing sorta has a charm to it

i feel like the broader trend is honestly just a bunch of young teens wearing anything inspired by media from 2000-2015. like two years ago it was e-girl, last year it was cottagecore, this is just the next trend in the cycle. maybe it's got something to do with increased media consumption during the pandemic or something? in any case i hope it's over by next year so that we can see a bit more creativity and not just recreation. (not saying the clothes aren't cute, i pretty much like all of it, but it's extremely unfocused and consumeristic and just like a teenager trying to figure themselves out)

@emmaswiftie13 100% this!! just buy timeless pieces that you like and can style in many different ways. the amount of aesthetics being created is really strange to me because I know personally that there's not one single aesthetic that I love everything about and it's far more enjoyable to be inspired by different parts of different aesthetics and combine them to influence your own style rather than limiting yourself so much to one style. it's also so unsustainable how some people will adopt whatever new aesthetic suddenly becomes trendy and buys a whole new wardrobe, usually of fast fashion, to fit into that aesthetic only for it to change again not long after ://///
This definitely has something to do with media consumption during the pandemic. It makes sense that a lot of people have been re-watching movies/tv-shows & intentionally or unintentionally emulating the styles from said movies/tv-shows as a form of escapism the almost 2 years since the world caught on fire.
also re: your vid on shoe trends reflecting the financial state at the time, i’ve noticed that women’s fashion in times of economic booms is more hyper feminine, while it’s more stereotypically masculine in harder times. maybe it’s bc masculine clothing is usually simpler/understated when compared to feminine styles?

Maybe- that's an interesting idea. My take is that the demonization of femininity gets stronger in harder economic times.
This is so true in a lot of cases. Just compare 1950s/early 1960s women's fashion to late 1960 and 1970s fashion. Or mid 2000s McBling fashion versus late 2000s/early 2010s fashion.
That rule seemed to change for the 2020s fashion though. 2020 and 2021 have obviously been hard times for many of us, yet I think fashion has become more feminine since 2020, but I think that's due to escapism and also our desire to dress up more any time we go out, since going outside is more rare now (for some of us anyway).
Edit: I don't know if this counts, but your rule also applies for the grunge age of the early 90s, since the recession of the late 80s wasn't that long before grunge became trendy, though I think that recession wasn't as impactful as others.

Personally, I feel like the style looks better on girls with a very specific body type? Like skinny arms and a non-flat chest? These would look awful on me and I actually think I'm on the thinner side, but I don't have that body type.
Same, the tiktoks in the video make it quite clear that skinny arms, thigh gaps and small busts are a requirement of participation. I think it's also taken for granted that tall/-er people usually also fit that type of clothing better with their long legs and torsos. Short people just look stumpy and awkward in the henleys and camisoles (speaking from experience). Not to even mention the horror of searching for any kind of pants that actually fit your body.
I believe that everything could look good on everyone with the right shapes and fabrics but in this case the shape is awkward and the fabrics are cheap , so I completely agree . I am mid sized and you won't find me near this clothes

As a POC I have a very different take. Most black girls didn’t dress like that because we didn’t WANT TO. We had very different styles and media influences. Honestly if you were black and dressed that way you’d likely get made fun of and called unfashionable by other black people lol
@@bryanna_renaee but that’s really sad that other black people would make fun of you for not dressing like other black people…that’s one of the big reasons I distance myself from the black community….it’s so uncomfortable that they could make fun of me for wearing something I like, like I’m not even one of them. There are black girls that like this but nobody sees them because their hidden based off of how their community acts, what trends their community follows, and they are scared they will be mocked.

But it is common to follow trends and use examples of people that looks like you and I see a multitude of black people using black y2k inspo and whites using white y2k inspo so I think that’s what it is.
The fact that people are calling this a trend and aesthetic is an absolutely hilarious concept to me. Having lived it, I know that these clothes were not supposed to be that trendy. The whole point is that the character was just ordinary. Imagine having bland 2009 as your style 😂

personally, i find this fashion trend is comfortable, cheap and accessible for me. plus, i'm someone who loves to wear dark, natural color palette. some of the pieces like bootcut jeans, leather jacket, boots, converse, and v-necks are quite basic clothing pieces that can be worn anytime.

So as a POC millennial, I have worn all of these in college and I do agree with you, most of the clothes mentioned were designed with a thinner body in mind. Henleys and button downs would not work with me without a cami underneath. Forget low rise jeans.

I HATED being a pre/teen in this era fashionwise! As a plus sized kid it was torture not being comfortable or looking good in any of the clothing that was sold for youths.
Same for me with crop tops maxi dresses or bodycon dresses🤣
I think that it was pure uncomfortable for literaly everybody. I was a skinny teenager around this area - a little bit younger, more pure 2010s - and clothes were really unconfortable. The materials were weird - god, those jeans were impossible - and clothes were poorly made, even worse than now.
I had my puberty during this era and skinny low waist jeans were in and I couldn't wear it due to me not being skinny at all. But I own some of them coz you had to buy them at some point by the time you get to high school and college. And college is where high waist came back for me but expensive at the time until I got one as a gift from my brother (I chose it online actually lol)
henley shirts, jeans and sneakers are always an aesthetic... never got rid of them ;) i love this trend because i literally couldn't imagine a better style when i was a teenager lol
As someone who was in high school when this trend was at its peak: this really only felt wearable if you were small. I’m midsize, I always have been and i feel like not seeing how midsize/curvy people would style these looks made it hard to be comfortable with how the pieces looked on my body type. I saw this trend damage mine and many of my peers’ self esteem to extremely unhealthy extents. This was also around the time Tumblr had large pro-ED communities, I think the trend definitely contributed to pushing young people to those dark corners of the online “beauty community” (not throwing shade, but that’s how people including myself at the time saw it as because that was the beauty standard - the volume of blogs/users/people was so large it was kind of recognised as a community. In hindsight, cult would be a more accurate noun.)
I was about to comment it! Seeing how tiktok is more fashion inclusive towards people with larger sizes I'm betting on a new aesthetic, more feminine and early 2000 or 2010, as contercouture. Probably emphasizing curves.

I was also just thinking about this, because Twillight and TVD were my favourite thungs back when I was a tween and I felt extremely fat when wanting to wear the fashion of the time, because I have never really been really skinny, rather normal or normal skinny (idk if that’s a thing) and I also have a pretty wide rib cage and hips which is not very easy to style when it comes to retail clothing (retail clothing is really more suuted to body types like Nina Dobrev’s with her small ribcage and very thin disposition).

The style is very literally straight and flat, if your tummy hangs over mid-rise jeans (which of course it would, especially with the tight skinny jeans that were also a massive trend during this time!) these shirts always defined it. Like, I’m not gonna be salty at gals who look amazing in this style but I know it only looks good because it was literally tailored to fit narrow frames with flat stomachs. Ngl, I used to absolutely hate women who looked like this but now I know it’s not the women I hated, it’s the standards and at the time my body that I hated. Glad I’m in a place now where I can fully appreciate other women’s appearances without feeling like what they have is what I lack! On that note: my body is gorgeous, I will literally say that out loud every damn day to make up for the amount of bullying and shaming I mentally put myself through in my teen years! 💖

I'm 24 and lived through my Twilight phase and the 2010's. I was always curvy and I can say with confidence this those clothes of that time were centered for skinny or thin people. The Body Positivity Movement didn't gain traction until late 2015/Early 2016 (my freshman year of college). Before then, I didn't see women my body type in media. And when we were, we were the brunt of a joke, heavily criticized, or on weight-loss ads. The movement gained traction due to social media and attempts to destigmatize mental health because ED's and self-harm were one of the highest percentages of teen mental health crises at that time.
I remember how it affected me and girls who were plus-size and curvy. We always felt out of the loop not being able to participate in fashion trends at the time and being bullied and harassed because of our weight. As a result, our only options of clothing were the "old lady section" of department stores leaving us feeling frumpy, boring, and defeated. So yes, I agree with you when you said "was it really fashionable, or was it just the skinny people wearing it". Because the 2000's and 2010's as a whole was not meant to include diversity in sizes, genders, or race. But with the changes in social media and the body positivity movement, we can see diversity being included (and even setting) fashion trends. And the fact we are able to call out brands, designers, makeup companies (etc) for their lack of diversity for sizes and colors is a huge step in the right direction.
Thinking back to the early 2000s when we had a recession, it's interesting to see this style pop up again. When I wore it, it wasn't really considered cool but I think it should be appreciated.

I don't know why "looking cheap" or "simple" style needs to be a bad thing? Also it is really modest which we don't usually see in a fashion trend. I agree with the skinny fashion part tho. I am a big boobs girl so having strapless clothes or backless shirts even crop tops are nearly impossible for me. When I wear something baggy I look triple my size. I never could've followed a fashion style because of this and my financial status, also where I live is modest. This trend fits my problems so well that I am happy this aesthetic not looked bad. I don't care if it is a trend or not, it just being and accepted aesthetic makes me happy and comfy.

Yeah I agree, I think for sure these costumes became trends because pretty girls on TV were wearing them, BUT I really appreciate the simplicity and normal-ness of it! People are 100% entitled to dress however they want, but the fashion trends of today are really inaccessible for people who might not want to show so much skin. Again, NO JUDGEMENT, do your thing, but just personally it's nice to see "boring" clothes being popular. Especially on TV, I feel like it ads to the story a lot, it adds to the vibe of a dark cozy town.
I don't have big tatas, but my hips are pretty big compared to my waist and I'm generally speaking very curvacious/round and I look triple my size too, when I wear baggy clothes (and I am at a healthy BMI). On top of that, I'm also short lol. So I can't wear super baggy jeans or anything super oversized and it's honestly frustrating to see people making fun of skinny jeans etc., when these are the jeans that flatter me the most. It's like people who aren't tall and slim/narrow are being made fun of no matter what aesthetic. I want justice for short and curvy women lmao

The movies/shows both came out while I was in 8th and 9th grade, 2008 and 2009. I was reading both series at that point. There were already platforms where people would put together mood boards of the fashion and then when the twilight movie came out there was a lot of clothes and merchandise associated with it.
Also, literally one of the first lines in the voice over is the commentator saying, “In today’s episode we’ll be studying the FAIRLY NEW AESTHETIC…” Jesus Christ, y’all just want to argue for no reason as if I personally came for you and your mother. I lived through the rise and fall of all of this in real time, and now I’m observing it again as an adult. excuse me if I’m one year off in my comment that has literally nothing to do with you.

I actually like this “trend”, it’s purchasing simple tops that are one color. people will always wear simple color clothes on many occasions then compared to the house of sunny dress where it’s bold and bright. Also these pieces are simple and I can make a look from this straight from my clothes or purchasing a $2 shirt at the thrift store. And of course many teens now, I included, are being obsessed abt twilight because we’re old enough to be in her shoes and understand and make it relatable. I think you should dress however you want😊

Because lots of plus sized people are discouraged from wearing layers and fitting clothes. Plus, low rise jeans are considered trashy on a plus sized person, but fashionable on skinnier people.
