    I like the package openings. "Open the box with the flaps? Nah, cut it apart. Open the bag at the zipper? Nah, break it!" Exactly how I do it. I enjoy watching the channel and seeing the forgings. Keep it up.

    Mom used to make a jelly roll cake. It was made out of sponge cake with raspberry jam between the layers. She'd soak it in rum and frost it with chocolate. She'd decorate it so it looked like a wooden log. Sometimes she'd make little mushrooms out of frosting..This has nothing to do with your video- which reminded me of Mom.

      My Mom used to do the same thing, I wonder if it's a regional thing or just a Mom thing. Moms are fun and forging is fun so I guess they have that in common. Anyway thanks for watching take care.

      I remember now- it was a Julia Child recipe. Your Mom and my Mom must have seen it on TV

      We call those Yule Logs. They're very common in the Rural Midwest, especially predominantly German areas. Every family has their own version. Sometimes you forgo the chocolate and use brandy in the icing and set them on fire. There are all sorts of fillings from raisins simmered until soft with brown sugar, to coconut, to brown sugar and black walnuts, etc... You do the chocolate icing to make it look like you've found a log, or the flaming icing to make it look like it's in your hearth. It is traditional for eating between December 22nd-31st which is the Holiday of Yule or Jul. It is one of those old winter Solstice traditions that goes back a long way, like eating ham and decorating with evergreens. Making log-like cakes is at least as old as the 1300s CE, and is considered a symbol of good luck for the new year to follow... Just like the Yule Log in the fireplace that has to burn for 9 days without going out in order to have good luck afterwards.

    Not sure I've ever seen a solid iron core in a jelly roll before, but it creates an incredibly interesting pattern. That crystalline pattern is fantastic. And the bow in your form is going to make for amazing flow in the final product. Kudos to you sir. Imperfection is perfection.

    Hi Tim, this is a general comment, not only about this particular video. I'm a knife enthusiast from Istanbul, Turkey. Not a knife maker. Being 50 and living in the heart of a city with a population of 15 mil. I have neither the place (space) nor the means to start forging. But I curb my enthusiasm with your videos. I do believe that you're doing a great job. Both in what you're doing and how you relate it to your subscribers. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work! Kind regards...

    I just wanted to say, thank you so much for sharing your art with the world, and yes, what you are doing is nothing short of art. For years and years I've pounded on horse shoes with my father whom spent 60 years of his life as a farrier as a side job for extra money. He has had me by his side since I cant remember when and it's all I knew of blacksmithing. Forged in Fire inspired me to greater things but it was artists and masters like yourself and Alec Steele and J. Neilson that I picked up finer points from on everything that had not a thing in this world to do with horseshoeing. I have to give props to my father though, Ronald "Whitie" Barg, for giving me a solid foundation in the basics as nothing stands without a good strong foundation. But I thanks you sir for all you've done to share what you know. I've never had the kind of cash it takes to buy a descent press/hammer but just got done watching your bit on making a press from a wood splitter and you've given me hope that by next year I'll have me a a sick power hammer by summer next year(such projects I save for the doldrums of winter out in the barn). Again, my thanks! :)

    I just knew amazing things were in the works when you built the press, and you didn't disappoint! I have most of the bits together that I need to get started on mine, now I just need to find the time.... I don't know how you find the time!

      @BIGDOGFORGE  7 років тому

      Hello Mike, I had to show off the hammer man it's one of the coolest designs I've seen so far, I think you'll be very happy with the press but when it comes to the finish work you're going to need your power hammer so don't put it on the back burner too long.
      Man sometimes I Sound like my father, sorry about that. Thanks for all the kind words Mike, good luck with the build on the press if there's any questions I can answer please don't hesitate to ask I'm more than happy to help. Thanks again take care and be safe

    • @MikeGIronCreek
      @MikeGIronCreek 7 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words Tim! From a fabrication standpoint I think the press will be quicker to finish, so I'm focusing on the press first.... The back burner isn't too far back on the hammer though, I see the need for both machines! Btw, I scored my hydraulic reservoir and a quarter sheet of 3/8 plate from Floyd's yesterday for 50 cents a pound! Happy forging and be safe out there in the shop!

    • @BIGDOGFORGE
      @BIGDOGFORGE  7 років тому +1

      Hello Ryan, I agree it does look kind of funky and I will be using it in a mosaic design, but it was really just a test to see how it would come out so that I could do the next one with a mosaic peace in the center which should make a much better looking pattern, hopefully. Thanks for all the kind words I do appreciate it. Take care.

    That was EPIC!!! I figured that if you did the wrought iron center, you would've been a lot smaller! Definitely a great choice to go bigger with the wrought, will definitely be a great look with the flower Damascus!!! It's going to make a beautiful piece of mosaic, can't wait to see it all come together! It's really cool seeing your artistic skills at work with building all of the different patterns that really no one has seen before.
    Watching Floyd go to work on that billet is amazing, I can watch that over and over lol... it's definitely something that has increased the amount of different types of Damascus you will be able to create!!! I'm sure sometime down the road you'll be making the "W's" mosaic Damascus!
    One Damascus pattern that you could possibly have some fun with is the "Wolf's tooth" pattern, could see a Big Dog pattern :)
    Thank you for making this, you know how much we've talked about this! The turnout is simply amazing workmanship and definitely the best jelly roll Damascus video on UA-cam! I did send you another jelly roll video that I found that an ABS knife maker made. You made making the roll without big gaps look so easy, the other videos all had some trouble with it.
    Can't wait to see what you have in store for us next video!!!
    Thanks again for another great video, another one I'll be watching multiple times! It's a great informative and inspiring video, really wish I could try making a Damascus knife! Thankfully, I get to watch your craftsmanship and you never disappoint!
    Take care my friend

    • @BIGDOGFORGE
      @BIGDOGFORGE  7 років тому +1

      Hello Phillip it's good to hear from you my friend I hope things are going well, I have some of the "W" pattern Damascus in the queue waiting to be put together which will probably be sooner than later, and you are correct a wolf's tooth pattern would look awesome.
      Floyd is definitely making this a lot easier and has opened up many new doors I'm really glad I got him put together.
      If you ever get to the point where you feel that you want to create a Damascus knife I would be more than happy to supply you with a billet of Damascus to create it from as a gift for all you've done for Big Dog Forge. Thank you for everything my friend I hope you're feeling well, take care and be safe.

    You will find you have to fill your angle iron squaring dies or you will have to continuously replace them. I find that rebar works well for that purpose. The inner core is an interesting idea, but perhaps a little large on this first time. You are a good source for all of us out here. Thanks.

    That Wrought Iron is the jam in your Jelly Roll. Like others I was thinking a cool center piece like that could be twisted Damascus core wrapped with the carbon and 15N20 nickel layers. Or maybe some Cable Damascus as the center piece...
    Or possibly cutting a slit in the round (wrought iron? or not) core, drifting it open to a Pac Man cross section, and insert the scarfed end of your billet :sandwiched into the Pac Man mouth to start the roll. Could you make a round recess die for your press to squeeze the "mouth" shut for a good forge weld? Like for making X size round stock?
    Just spitballing ideas since you seem to be rather adventurous. Rock on.

    Hey Tim, Yet another brilliant video full of info. Another cool pattern id like to see made is the wolf tooth. Very sweet pattern it is. The other is I think rose pattern were the Damascus billet is drilled part way threw than brought back to true if that makes since. When you mentioned twisted jellyroll I was hoping to see you twist a bar of Damascus. Then flatten it back out and finish it with a jellyroll. Hmm wonder what that would look like. Cant wait to see that touch mark you are going to be getting from Glen. Gonna be pretty sweet ya know. Fyi your power hammer my produce better if you design a better head instead of the RR track due to the fact that track is meant to act as a spring . Making it possible for the track to flex rather than break. Although that short of a piece may not have a lot of spring to it but it could be enough to disrupt its purpose. Either way just BSing fantastic job as always. Congrats on the roll she will be great no matter what you decide to do with her.... As always thanks for sharing looking forward to when you are able to get my package together, no hurry when you get a chance.. Sincerely, Martin Moldovan at M/S Blacksmithing and Blades.

      Hello Shan, I agree I think a wolf tooth pattern is in the plan, as far as the twisted Damascus rolled into a jellyroll I think that sounds like an awesome idea, I'm actually going to use all of this Damascus as a multi bar mosaic and I've been contemplating the last bar to use I think this might be it, that's absolute genius thank you for the suggestion I really like it. I did hear back from the Glen about that touch mark he thinks some of the detail may be too fine and I may have to redesign slightly but that shouldn't be a big deal, I'll be at the junkyard this weekend and if they have something suitable I'll pick it up to replace the hammers on the power hammer, I've known for awhile now that those webs if are absorbing quite a bit of the energy from the hammer and it's about time I did something about it so thanks for lighting that fire its now on the junkyard list of things to buy.
      Thanks again for watching take care my friend.

    Holy Moly Tim - really impressive - your press is such a beast helping to accelerate the whole process - if you could only one tool either your press or your power hammer - which one would you choose? Seems like the press is faster and more versatile with all the dies.

    • @BIGDOGFORGE
      @BIGDOGFORGE  7 років тому

      Hello Rick. Actually I do love the press it makes things very quick and easy the problem with it is things come out a little rough, some of that could be because I'm getting used to it but I've heard others say the same thing, on the other hand scrappy the power hammer refines things quite well so honestly if I had to choose between one or the other I would probably choose the power hammer, it's a little slower and takes more heats to get to where you want to go but it finishes the work piece off much better. But please don't make me choose because now I'm spoiled, Floyd gets their fast and scrappy finishes it off easily. Man this is starting to sound like some weird rock band.
      It's good to hear from you Rick it won't be long now. Take care my friend and be safe.

    Tim you need to find a small refrigerator about 3 ft. tall it dose not need to work.
    Wire it so you have a 100 W bulb on all the time, it will keep the temp at about 140 deg. F.
    You may need a bigger bulb but it will drive out the moisture out of the flux and keep them dry.

    BTW, if the wrought iron is highly carbon based (some of them have even 5% carbon in them which is really much) and is hard to weld together with a less carbon(ated?) steel. The electrodes used to "weld" wrought iron pieces together are actually made of nickel (about 98% or so) and when applied, works as a higher level of brazing the two brittle pieces together with the nickel sort of aquatically flowing into and between the pieces. Meaning no welding is actually done, it's just glue. In a sense.

    awesome video Tim! do you have any of that bandsaw blade left that you were sending out? if you do, id be interested in getting some. all this pattern welding is getting me excited haha! i think ive got a couple more sessions left with my forge, i used it the other day to straighten a piece of metal out for a customer, and i noticed that i didnt have the A/F ratio right... ive probably been burning wrong all this time haha! i was able to get pretty good heat out of my forge. im hunting for a giant piece of round pipe for another forge im going to build. ill also be running a burner like the one you built like Alec's :) cheers Tim!

    The hammer on your anvil at 11:24 is quite reminiscent of a Brian Brazeal style hammer. Did you make it yourself? It looks amazing and I am trying to gain inspiration into forging my first hammer. I have most of the top tools built but now comes the hard part. Just stumbled onto your channel and love your content. Greetings from Canada!

    Nice job, man you are really on a Damascus 'roll'! (See what I did there? 😎). Adding the wrought iron core (jelly filling) was a neat touch. I'm pretty excited to see how you'll incorporate that with the flower pattern billet. FWIW, I personally think the distorted corners look pretty cool, I think they would only really become a problem if you were trying to making a very specific pattern, such as a multi billet Turkish twist etc. Something like this however you could easily find a solution to by asking on blade forums or the like. I know you have a bunch of Damascus already and are pretty backed up with projects, but sometime in a future project, I'd love to see you forge a 'firestorm' billet, which is basically a twisted 'W's', that when ground into deep enough gives a really neat pattern, known as 'firestorm'. It can even can look really cool with a fairly 'loose' or lazy twist.
    I gotta say that I really respect how interactive you are with all your subs, especially when it comes to taking subscriber requests as your projects, man I would honestly be completely overwhelmed trying to keep up with all this, plus tongs plus your day job etc lol. But I can tell that you really enjoy it, so I must say it is really cool to be a part of it all 🙂. As Always I hope you're doing good brother. Take care and I'll chat with ya soon. (Sorry for being late to comment btw)

      @BIGDOGFORGE  7 років тому +1

      Hello Paul, thank you so much for all the kind words I do appreciate it, I really like the idea of this firestorm that you talk about it sounds fairly simple and very interesting I've been looking for a way to incorporate a regular Damascus billet along the edge of my mosaic pattern I'm working on I'm wondering do you think the fire storm pattern would work that way? Anyway I have to say that the interaction with the viewers is half the fun for me and it's you guys than make it all worthwhile, so thanks for being their man, and by the way you're never late brother you're right on time. Thanks again take care of yourself my friend and I'll talk to you soon.

    • @lsubslimed
      @lsubslimed 7 років тому

      It would definitely work as an edge billet. In fact, I just recently say a bladesmith make a blade using a multi-bar billet made up of 6-8 bars of firestorm pattern twisted in alternating directions.
      You would also be able to get a pretty tight twist at size billet too (edge billet sized). The pattern in this type, or any type of twisted pattern for that matter, always shows up best when you get closer to the middle of the billet by grinding into it. If you do a quick google image search you can get an idea of various ways it can look, with more or less W's, less or tighter twist etc.
      I you haven't already, I think doing a small amount of research on how to form basic W's would be really beneficial. There are two general ways to make them, the first being to simply squash the billet down on it's edge and cutting and re-stacking, the second (faster) method is to forge the billet square, the using your squaring dies on the press, re-square the billet so the flats become new corners (basically making it a square diamond), then squeezing the billet flat on it's diamond/corners. It have to be flattened on the correct corners, otherwise instead of squishing the layers down more to create this effect: (((( )))) it will end up re-straightening the layers. It actually forms a 'ccc' instead of a (((, but my keyboard doesn't have mirrored c's.. This i so much easier to draw on paper than to try and explain in a comment lol.
      Anyway, I hope this makes a little bit of sense! Again, a quick search on google should show various links to forums discussing how to make W's and all the different neat patterns you can create using the W's as a base pattern. Take care and I'll chat with later :)

    Ok I have a question.
    But first an explantion.
    At the time of me watching this vid I've already seen the 1000 damascus challenge. I know that you found the pattern on the edge if the billet more interesting then the flat side with the thousand layers & I enjoyed watching everything
    Soo my question is. If you forge another billet with a more interesting edge then the flat side. Could you flattern out the billet on the boaring side a bit more & roll that up into a jelly roll ?

    • @BIGDOGFORGE

    17:45... To prevent the corners from squishing out, couldn't you run it through an in between size? That way you aren't trying to move as much metal each time.
    Or maybe just not go down as far at first. You would still get the pinch but it would be smaller.
    I'm sure there is a reason these are bad ideas. Just curious if you have tried this and why it doesn't work.

  • @tropifiori

    • @BIGDOGFORGE
      @BIGDOGFORGE  7 років тому

      Hello Frank, sometimes it's a bit of a guessing game but in this case because of the wrought iron in the center I'll have to work it at the top end of the heat range just below welding temperature otherwise I can split or damage the wrought iron because wrought iron is best work just below welding temperature, I also use a little flux on the rest of the billet as I'm forging it to keep the higher carbon steel from scaling up or burning. Any way thanks for tuning in take care.

    • @BIGDOGFORGE
      @BIGDOGFORGE  7 років тому

      Hello Bill. Actually that is part of the reason, because wrought iron is self flexing I had a better chance of making it work and it was really just a test to see how it would work and to prepare myself to put another piece of mosaic Damascus in the center of another jelly roll as part of a multilayer design. You might say it was a practice run. but I will be using it in a mosaic Damascus billet. Thanks for watching take care.

    I'm kinda curious... What would it look like if you took that bar and rolled it against the pattern? Presumably once you stretched it back out, the steels would've mixed pretty funky like... Or, you'd have just buried most of the pattern under a single layer. Not sure.
