Tim, I really love watching you make your Damascus projects here. I really had my doubts about that huge chain there. But you sure did pull it off just the same. Well done sir!!!

Nice. I tried to forge weld some forklift chain and was having similar issues. I haven't tried again because my coal forge doesn't seem to get large billets hot enough. I am told my fire pot isn't deep enough. When I finish my 2 burner forge may be Ill try again. Thank you for the video.

I agree about reusing used equipment. You pay too much of a premium to get "new" equipment. Most home use of equipment is so light it can be 20+ years old and still be fit for purpose.

I have found my new favorite UA-cam channel, thank you for all the great info you put into them. I dont know if this has been mentioned before, but you have to be careful when cleaning metal with brake clean with chlorine it can cause a lot of health issues if it vaporizes. Not sure if that's only when arc welding or if it's just heating in general.

I really like the way you present and explain the process of your forging damascus. I like the end result also. Great ideas. But I read an article in an American Iron magazine cautioning against using Brake Cleaner of any kind and then heating the metal you cleaned. Whether by welding, forging, cutting, grinding, etc. because the intense heating creates a poison gas that when inhaled has a similar effect as some nerve gases have. I don't know by experience, (and don't want to), but I figure better safe than sorry. I hope you might change to some kind of non toxic type of method of pre cleaning your steel as nerve damage may impair forging abities somewhat. But don't want anyone to suffer damage from dangerous materials. Keep up the good forging. JAD

I think it's safe to say you turned that situation into some fine lemonade 😉. Nice to see that good and solid billet at the end, and with some interesting patterning going on as well. I have to ask though, where did you get that huge magnet with the two handles for flattening on the grinder? Looks like it's pretty comfortable to use, at least compared to my little Harbor Freight welding magnet with an eyebolt for a handle lol. This was fun to watch as always, thanks for sharing and take care brother. :)
